Hey Lucky's! I love yall but something's have changed that I think yall can improve: First, the prices have REALLY gotten high. Extra special breakfast spot in Oaklawn. A friend and I visited as a spur of the moment idea on a Monday early afternoon. Plenty of tables available and the servers are super nice and attentive. We started with a mimosa carafe and the fried pickles (sweet and sour). I loved the batter on the pickles, it was thick and crunchy perfect contrast to the pickles. I've never had a sweet pickle fried, and I'm glad I tried it, same texture but the sweet really stands out and goes with the dipping sauce well. For brunch I ordered the chicken and waffle with dark meat and a side of gravy. Where I begin, it was all AMAZING! The waffle is perfect, crunchy outside and fluffy inside and it doesn't get soggy. It's served with a cinnamon butter on top( yes, you heard me lol). I really enjoyed the dark meat because it was more juicy and flavorful, which balanced all the sweet from the waffle. I ordered the half order but next time I will definitely get the whole so I can take some home for later. I also had a taste of the banana cognac pancakes. Wow! They are delicious! What more can anyone say about this iconic Oak Lawn diner? I came for lunch today with my mom and I haven't been here in YEARS (despite living pretty close for a good while). The last time I went, I think I was still eating meat (so at least 10 years ago?) and I just never thought about coming back because I didn't remember them having vegan options. Well, let me tell you that I was wrong!! They have several vegan options! I don't think I saw any on the all day breakfast menu but if you're looking for Impossible tacos, enchiladas, or a BLT, you're in luck (plus a few other options). Today I had the BLT and it was tasty! The bacon isn't anything proprietary, if you're vegan you'll know what it is but there's nothing wrong with that. Add some avocado, thick tomato slice and elevated lettuce mix (no iceberg here, honey) and vegan mayo even on some toasted sourdough (or multigrain, your choice) with a side of delicious fries and you're taking away a clean plate from me. Mom had the chicken fried chicken sandwich and loved it - huge piece of chicken, thick slice tomato, etc. She'll have 2 more meals out of that for sure. What I especially love about this place, though, is the vibe. I can just feel the community and love from this place. The staff is kind and special. It just makes me feel happy!! If there were any negative or word of caution, know that their parking is not great and weekends can get very busy. We came here for breakfast and it's the cutest little homey restaurant! Our server James was very attentive. When he realized he brought bacon instead of sausage, he immediately brought out a side in sausage in less than 30 seconds. When I didn't eat much of my salad, he brought out a side of potatoes without me asking! We also didn't even have to ask him to split the check in 4 he just automatically did which was great. The service started out a little slow- probably due to arriving at about 1pm- but got better as tables started to clear from the lunch rush. We ordered the deviled eggs, chicken salad, and three burgers. I was really impressed with the quality of the food- much higher quality than your average diner. You pay a little more than average too but it was worth it for the most part. The chicken salad salad was a disappointment though. Visiting from out of town and we found this place on yelp. I was expecting it to be really good because it was super busy and all I had seen were good reviews but I was a little dissatisfied. There was a short wait and when we got seated we were brought waters. We had our waters replaced 2 times before our server got us bar glasses because there was lettuce in the first one and some black stuff in the 2nd. We ordered the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and cream corn and then the Migas with a pancake. The chicken fried steak was great, the sides were okay. The migas were very soggy and I didn't eat them, but the pancake was very yummy. I think the atmosphere is nice and the servers are kind but I wouldn't personally recommend. Today was the day golf was rained out so off to Lucky's. After seeing the Sleaziest Cheesiest Grilled Cheese presentation on Fox 4 we had to try it. We walked in an was greeted by the gentlemen at the bar , they were busy, we took a table. Marvin was our waiter and he was very nice and prompt with greeting us and taking our orders. We looked at the menu and well we ordered the Grilled Cheese and Whole Chicken and Waffle, fries with the grilled cheese. The food came promptly and we dove in. WOW the grilled cheese held up to its expectations. The chicken and waffles like wise we loved our meals. We had a free slice of Cake for our first visit there from an email my wife had and it was a Chocolate cake!!!!!mmmmmmmmm Wow we had one taste and could not wait to get home to finish it!!! I love diners. I'm from NJ and that's THE place to eat. Super excited this place is in my neighborhood. There's something to be said about customer service, which includes sitting guests quickly even if there's a wait. If it wasn't for the customer service, I wouldn't visit this place again. It's the first restaurant I've ever been to where the worst time to go is when they are busy. This is specific to breakfast/brunch. Lucky's brave employees made it possible for me to eat a tasty breakfast with good portions and company. I particularly liked the well seasoned and flaky/crispy chicken fingers. I also enjoyed the spinach and green beans. Yum. My partner enjoyed the juevos rancheros which Lucky's has put a spin on. And they gave us warm, buttery, complimentary biscuits to eat! Went to Lucky's for breakfast today. It's got a cute diner vibe and friendly service with lots of options on the menu. This was my second visit and it's always packed on the weekends especially for breakfast. Upon arriving we were greeted by a very friendly hostess and only waited about 10 minutes to be seated. However we waited quite a while for our food. About 20 minutes. We both ordered omelettes which were rather small and not much veggies and meat inside with not much cheese added. Also just a handful of breakfast potatoes. The sourdough bread and biscuits were good and fresh and I like how all the menus item ingredients are locally sourced. The service was good along with the overall experience but I'm rating a three because the food is just okay. Nothing to write home about in my opinion. We played the wrong numbers today. The equation is simple and we were simply unLucky. Bad Food + Bad Service = One Star in my book. It was a busyish day in the Oak Lawn diner. Tables were mostly full and the wait staff was hustling...all but our waiter that is. Coffee was brought steaming to the table, but was never warmed, topped off, refilled, anything. I considered asking our waiter to test the temperature with his finger...but he didn't visit us again until he brought the check. He also didn't notice the COMPLETELY UNEATEN Enchiladas & Eggs entree that was 100% inedible. That pan of enchiladas had long outlived their expiration date. They were the Texican embodiment of that "not so fresh" feeling. Potatoes were unseasoned and pinto beans were uninspired. If you are a diner and you can't get even those basics right, there is a problem. We should have been forewarned of the impending enchilada monstrosity with the deviled eggs we ordered as an appetizer. Every restaurant has had an egg starter on their menu for at least three years. It is such an easy home run, but Lucky's struck out. These eggs were overloaded with a vinegary homemade pickle relish that left a bad taste in your mouth even after you scraped the offending cucumbers off. Dousing them in Tabasco...a solution that can solve some of the most egregious errors...did little to save them. And service...we have to come back to the complete and utter lack of attention. In general, we are a pretty low-maintenance pair as restaurant diners, and maybe we give off the "we can take care of ourselves" vibe...which is great in a dark alley at night, but shouldn't be taken to heart when we are waiting for someone to refill our water. Everyone, no matter how seemingly self-sufficient, deserves to be waited on when they are paying to eat out. read more
