I saw a video clip of Lucy's and saw that they have good tortillas so I tried this place out to order tacos to go. I ordered a chorizo and egg, carne guisada and a country sausage . Chorizo and egg= 1/5. It was burnt so I threw most of it out. Country sausage = 2/5. Too many onions ruined the taco Carne guisada =3/5. Not the best but not the worst either. Tortillas didn't seem fresh enough and seemed like they were a day old because they crumbled a bit when rolling them. I'm more partial to El Rafas on Hildebrand or The Original Taco House on Fredericksburg. The service was good. They had a lot of Coca Cola memorabilia by the cashier's table. read more

Great prices, great portions, great flavor! Was super packed on a Sunday morning. I got 3 tacos because I didn't know how big they were. Had to take one home because they were huge! Very tasty. The red sauce and green were very spicy! So good. Tortillas were homemade. Coffee was good, even the decaf. My husband said his barbacoa and guisada were the best tacos he's had so far in the San Antonio area. Even though it was a bit of a wait to get our food we will definitely be back soon. read more

Old school Mexicano cafe where they don't even make pretense to want to speak English. That's ok gabachos, bolillos,and all the pinche pochos, they understand it! Like many other comments, Lucy's exterior does not have the ambiance the cafe has inside. In a older strip center. Once inside it is clean & does NOT smell like (fabuloso) staff are organized and the servers very attentive and happy looking, they keep you in coffee. The food was excellent. I had breakfast , juevos rancheros with corn tortillas ( homemade) with a little char on them outstanding ,refried beans and papas and bacon. The salsa was fantastic while orange in color (habanero??) hot but not too hot with great flavor. One more item was the side taco barbacoa on corn of cource , it was a 10 all meat but not a roast. Don't let the façade fool you. Two large dining areas and the food is served hot and it's quite delicious. The first time I had the chilaquiles which comes with a side of refried beans and potatoes. It was a generous serving but managed to finish it off and the homemade flour tortillas were just as good. I had to go back and try their pozole which didn't disappoint! Plenty of hominy and lots of tender pieces of pork. It comes with a side of condiments typically served with pozole; cabbage, onions, cilantro and limes and two crispy tostadas. This place is what I call a hole-in-wall type of place. I am spoiled by the freshness of the food at Lucy's. These flour tortillas are among the best San Antonio has to offer. Everything including the tortillas have always been super fresh. Even the tortillas are freshly made in the afternoon. This is something other local spots will not do. My Huevos Rancheros are always delicious . I tried their puffy tacos and I recommend that plate highly. I waited a little extra time so for this plate because again, everything I have ever had over the few years I have gone is always fresh. The prices are extremely reasonable so try a few different things. A friend of mine told me that the pork chops were delicious so I will try that next. read more

Came here based on other reviews and it has become my favorite Mexican Restaurant, which says a lot about a restaurant that's located in a city that has Mexican food at every corner (or so it seems). Don't be fooled by the strip center location and coca-cola decor. Lucy's is a gem of fabulous flavors and authentic taste-just like grandma used to make. Bean and cheese with bacon has become my favorite breakfast taco, carne guisada is tasty and full flavored, tortillas...OMG, the tortillas are THE BEST and made not only from scratch but with the same love that came from grandma's kitchen. Gustavo Arellan wrote an excellent book called, Taco USA; "How the Taco Conquered the United States". His assertion was that the taco would become as popular as American Apple Pie, as prominent a fixture as the hot dog. He is partially correct. And whether you enjoy a fancy ten dollar one from Mi Tierra or a dollar one from Eddie's Taco house our love for them is all the same. For my taste I choose the latter, the cheaper one, but nonetheless with big flavor from restaurants like Lucy's Cafe. Lucy's sits in the middle of a Quinceanera store and a salon. It is small and unassuming. This is the taco palace for working men and professionals who want their food to go. You can go in an order, but there are very few tables. The tables have plastic coverings to prevent the wear and tear of the patrons that go in there to eat. It is not fancy beyond any means. No waiting to have a hostess seat you. And other than a few plates, odds and ends there is really nothing much to what they sell. However... The food here is pretty darn good and cheap. They have bean and cheese, carne guisada, papas con huevos, the list goes on and on of what items they have. The food is always warm. The tortillas are fresh and quite tasty. I always find myself tearing into them, pulling them apart with my hands. Herds go in the mornings to score some for themselves. The late to work take a box packed with their goodies as a peace offering to coworkers and bosses. In addition the service is good. The servers are helpful and try their best to get you your food quickly. The only issue I have with this place is that in the mornings, when it gets slammed with customers there is no parking. When this place opens it can get packed with patrons. My suggestion to you is to place your order by phone and then go pick it up. It is a lot easier this way. Lucy's Cafe is no frills Tex-Mex Food. Good tacos at really good prices. If you want ambiance go to the Eddies' Taco House in Thousand Oaks. If you just want tacos "dirty deeds done cheap" then go to Lucy's. Went to Lucy's Cafe for lunch on a Sunday. I decided to take my order to-go, and was greeted promptly by a waitress. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros plate that came with beans, bacon, eggs over easy, potatoes, and tortillas. I added on an iced tea, since drinks are sold separately. The tea came in a large styrofoam cup with lemon, but it had a watered down taste to it. No worries, the food was good, even to-go. When I got home, the tortillas were still piping hot and delicious! Fluffy and decadent, I had to stop myself from eating more (the calories!). The beans tasted great, and the eggs were fresh. The potatoes could of used a little more seasoning, but all in all, it was a good b-fast/lunch meal. The interior was inviting and welcoming. You can tell the owner is a Coca-Cola fanatic, as to all of the collectables on the wall, red booth seats, and salt & pepper in coke containers. The restaurant is small with about 10 or so seats. This would be a great place to check out if you are in the West Avenue area wanting tacos, or a Tex-Mex plate. The booths remind me of a classic diner with a distinct twist.
