Lucy's was different. The chicken wasn't anything spectacular, I've definitely had wayyyy better, but it wasn't terrible. We also ordered oysters, the chicken nachos and a few sides (mac n cheese, potato salad and fries). The fries were my favorite, the seasoning was really good. The Mac n cheese was pretty basic, not much flavor. And my friends said the oysters were decent. Overall, it was ok for needing dinner at the time and wanting to try a new place. One of the places I heard about whose chicken I had to try in Austin, it's not as good as I was hoping/expecting but still a decent contender for great chicken in town. I had been to Gus's before coming here and maybe that set a bad precedent because Gus's chicken was absolutely amazing, super juicy, crispy, and delicious. Lucy's certainly has much more variety in menu choices, with lots more southern dishes, like spaghetti with fried chicken, sandwiches, plates, and more. They also seem to try to use more of the chicken as much as possible, serving everything from chicken livers to gizzards, and feet (iirc), so if you're adventurous and looking to try something exotic try things to your [chicken] hearts content. We got the livers, 3 piece, and an order of fries. Personally, we didn't like the livers; it was mushy, a weird texture, and smelled odd. I'm assuming it's all as it's supposed to be but we've never had livers by themselves, as pate (French ground liver spread). We like pate, don't like them by themselves. It's okay - they took it off the bill for us as apparently it happens often (and they're probably not loosing money if they don't sell it anyway). The chicken itself was decent but some of the pieces weren't as juicy (nor as juicy as Gus's). The fries were fries, nothing special really, but overall reasonably priced, the atmosphere was cool, and the people were really nice, so all around GPTE (Great Place To Eat). read more

Yum! I love Lucy's fried chicken! Tried all the things on our first visit. Favorites included chicken and waffles (the waffle was SO perfectly crispy), the fried pickles, and the chicken tender basket. I especially loved the honey mustard sauce. The Mac and cheese was just ok. Fries were standard and good. Onion rings were beer battered and very rich in flavor which some people love but I find I can only really eat one of them. The chicken is generally good, although it's not unusually for a piece or two in a bucket to be overcooked or without enough skin to keep it from getting tough. The sides are mostly misses. The fried okra is okay but the rest all seem to "smoked" -- which seems to be some funky in a bad way liquid smoke. It seems like everyone knows everyone here, meaning a lot of regulars almost every day. I like that in a restaurant atmosphere, and I was impressed to see how friendly the staff is with all the patrons. I've been to the one in north Austin on Burnet, but I think this one takes the cake in the city. I tried the fried chicken nachos as an appetizer. OMG, this plate was meant to be an entree, or at least shared with one other person. I even heard one person speak of it as "the mountain." It comes with chicken, guacamole, jalapeños, cheese, sour cream, and many amazing flavors! I went through the options of what to get, but I think this is just as good as Papasito's nachos. The pickled jalapeños were my favorite part because it gives it that extra kick. Definitely go try some with friends. They also have many other things like burgers, sandwiches, and other fried chicken plates. Desserts and drinks are also available, including $3 domestics on Tuesdays. Plus once you visit here you'll make friends with pretty much everyone. Parking is limited, so get here early. Outside seating is also available too on a nice day. read more

Lucy's is good food, but nothing to write home about. My boyfriend absolutely loves the chicken tenders and the house hot sauce. Their coleslaw is great, but the sweet potatoes and the half chicken are just fine. Nothing bad about any of the food I've tried here, it's just not amazing or stand out in any way. A couple times when we've gone the site says they're open later than they are, which resulted in us getting rushed out of the table. The drinks are middle of the road; again, nothing amazing. Service has always been solid. We'll be back because my boyfriend loves it, and if you're in the area it's a really good pick, but I won't tell you to go out of your way. read more

The fried catfish was good a the coating a little crispy and thick. The potatoes and collard greens I did not like. The collard greens are canned greens with a whole lot of vinegar. Lucy's is always a good time for brunch. We usually drink way more watermelon margaritas then we intend, but that's part of the fun. It's definitely possible to over order here, so do yourself a favor and take it easy to start, maybe split an item or two with someone. You can always order more food, which may be required after 2 or 7 Juicy Lucys anyway.. Tried this for the first time today! What a great place!! I got an order of tenders and some mashed potatoes. Tenders were a plenty and seasoned JUST RIGHT. I tried honey mustard for dipping which I'm not keen on but wanted to try it. It was amazing! I'm used to McDonald's honey mustard so that's probably why I have always not liked it. Mashed potatoes were pretty good as well, nice and pepper-y, the flavor was very homestyle. I did get these delivered with favor and sometimes that tends to lessen the crunch of freshness of some items. However, there was still a crisp on the tenders! If you're a vegetarian and the rest of your group isn't and they want to eat here, STILL GO! :) I'll start off for my vegetarians/pescatarians - the Mac n cheese is so yummy! I also ordered the fish and chips, not terrible but not the best so I probably wouldn't order it again but the fries are good! They also have a few fries veggie options for appetizers but if you're a vegetarian and go eat at a chicken or steak place, you already know your "entree" will be sides :) Just a heads up, this place uses salt heavily - it was a little too much for me but it's a fried chicken place so you should already expect it. First things first. I love Lucy's. It's my go to so it pains me to write this review. I take my seat and places my arms on a very sticky table. The waiter Comes over and asked me what I would like to drink. I tell him that I haven't been there in a while and I ask for a lemonade. He brings me the lemonade and then asks me what I would like to order; however, he doesn't bring me a menu. So I ordered my normal chicken legs basket, mashed potatoes and mac & cheese. The restaurant is practically empty and I get my food pretty quickly. It continues to go downhill from there. The three chicken legs were severely overcooked and had very little chicken on them. They were a very dark brown and brittle. In addition, both the mashed potatoes and mac & cheese were both lukewarm. Too top it all off, there was a customer at the bar with no mask on engaging in a good 10 minute conversation with the bartender. This experience was in stark contrast to all my other experiences; however, I will not be going back until Austin is vaccinated as a whole. read more

Hadn't been here in 10 years. They've changed the original recipe and now the chicken tastes bland. Even worse they fried the chicken in fish/seafood grease so it tasted fishy. I'm soo disappointed. The employees are very kind and homely. Just the chicken was horrible. Fresh but horrible. Don't know if this is now the usual recipe. This place is not the place. Why did my receipt have a togo charge on it but there were no plastic utensils or napkins or anything provided in the bag when we picked it up?? My friend raved about their fried chicken and pasta. So I ordered it too. We were miles and miles away when we got to her house and she couldn't believe they only gave us one small chicken wing each. She said they usually top the pasta with two pieces of fried chicken. That one little wing was delicious though but I don't think it was worth the money paid especially with the extra unexplained charges. So I was left with a feeling like I'd been tricked or scammed. I read great things about their fried chicken. I actually ordered the special which was a southern hot and spicy fried chicken with honey. It was good but when the spice was caked on there was a texture like eating dirt. So if I avoided the caked on spice it was actually very good sweet and a little spicy. I would've like to try the normal fried chicken but was too full from the three thighs. I also had the dirty rice balls and they were very tasty and filling. The sweet tea went down far to easily. Love the whole vibe of this place! Even though fried chicken is in it's name, I found their fried chicken to be nothing special. For me, the calamari and PIES!! really stand out here. I haven't tried their oysters yet, but it's definitely something that I'm going to come back and try. I like the wide variety of choices that they have - there really is something for everyone. I've been writing this review, texting, and taking work calls for over 20 minutes now and (believe it or not) my chicken tenders area STILL hot and juicy!! They even make their own ranch and honey mustard to dip 'em in. Both sauces are yummy as well, but try the chicken by itself first just to give your mouth the pleasure. My server, Eric, was great! He was very relaxed and extremely respectful. He was even nice enough to watch my belongings when i had to step away. Bottom line: if you're around here you need to give this place a try. I've only ever ordered from Lucy's for pickup but that process is always great. There's a little table inside to pick up your food with your name and you're on your way. The worst fried catfish I've ever had, no exaggeration. The breading was burnt, the filet was leaking oil, and it tasted of old grease. I had to cut a lime, squeeze and drink it to try and cleanse my pallet. Holy moly, if you want catfish go to Catfish Parlor or Texas Roadhouse (seriously), stay away from here. read more

this place is absolutely fantastic. the atmosphere is classic austin with most seating being picnic tables outside and the walls covered in chalk signatures from previous guests. they have fantastic daily drink deals and the drinks very tasty. we started with the chili cheese tots which was a big serving but absolutely incredible. could easily be shared between 4-5 people as an appetizer. my boyfriend got the chicken sandwich which he was pretty impressed with. i got the chicken and waffles which was incredible. if i was on death row, chicken and waffles would be my final meal and this was the best chicken and waffles i've ever had. the waffle is perfection and the chicken mouthwatering (i did chicken tenders as a substitute) but the star is their honey butter. over all i loved the experience. chelsea was an amazing server and we had a wonderful time! can't wait to come back and bring friends!!! read more
