My friend raved about their fried chicken and pasta. So I ordered it too. We were miles and miles away when we got to her house and she couldn't believe they only gave us one small chicken wing each. She said they usually top the pasta with two pieces of fried chicken. That one little wing was delicious though but I don't think it was worth the money paid especially with the extra unexplained charges. So I was left with a feeling like I'd been tricked or scammed. Whenever I want a fix for fried chicken, either a. I'll make it myself or b. Go to Church's (because its cheap). But my friend was in town and we decided to try something that we heard was hot on SoCo. It's not everyday that you rave about the white meat chicken but man Lucy's does it perfectly, if in fact in my opinion, even better than the dark meat. The chicken is well seasoned, extremely burstingly juicy, not greasy and crisp. The breading is phenomenal, not too much crunch but definitely not limp either and not too much where you wonder if there is any chicken under there; in fact the pieces are large and satisfying. The basket ($9) comes with 4 pieces, a breast split in half, a wing, a drumstick and a thigh, plenty enough for two (or one fried chicken enthusiast!). Sides are abundantly flavorful too. My friend got the potato salad, which has some crab boil seasoning spiked in for a different flair, but very Austinish if you think about it. I got a side of the cayenne potato chips, a huge basket of clearly house made thin sliced potato chips, fried to a perfect crunch and bursting with a rich earthy flavor. The cayenne cuts across the earthy flavor with just a hint of spice to round out the chip flavor. Outdoor shade seating, indoor seating too. Parking is a bit hard to find, but we came early so we lucked out. Would definitely come back, maybe next time grabbing a few more buddies and getting the bucket. read more

You know its been so long I can't remember if my grandma nicknamed by me Gran Gran made me fried chicken. I'm sure it happened as I remodeled her house and spent hours cleaning up grease stains behind the stove. I guess the most memorable dish she made was SOS. Basically ground beef with gravy made in the same pan for some drippings deluxe over toast with the kick of Lawry's seasoning. I did find some comparison in the sides thanks to my other grandma on the other side of the family. The creole okra, sweet potatoes spiked with Mexico Coke, and the Texas Caviar with marinated onions were great representations of home style sides. The cornbread basket also had good flavors pairing mild cornbread with sweet cream butter, jalapeno, and sliced scallion. Honesty, I've had better fried chicken. My mom who accompanied (and paid) on this adventure had the four piece basket. Temperature wise it wasn't piping hot like it came out of the fryer seconds ago; possibly ten minutes before. My Pearl beer menu denoted grilled chicken with gravy was good; but also missed the mark as a high end entree. The pickled jalapeno on the fried basket was house made heaven. I picked a Thirsty Planet Hefeweizen while mom contemplated why her pinot was served cold. We finished the meal with the sweet tea pie to arrive a a four star rating adding that service was friendly and attentive. The bartender who was close to our location was even concerned about our overall dining experience. Sides were uuuhmazing, chicken was good but not memorable. My chicken was dry and skin was tough and no not crispy. It was like aged skin like if it was sitting out of the heat for an 3 hours and then microwaved. They probably don't have a microwave but it tasted like it so please prove me wrong the next time I come. Also, all my sides were cold and no gravy for the mash potatoes that I did not even order. Solid first meal in Austin. Great texas atmosphere featuring Texas cuisine. The deep fried deviled eggs were great, covered in an extra crispy, hot chicken like batter. The contrast between the texture of the hard boiled egg and crunchy batter was awesome and the dish had a nice heat to it. The Layla's oyster were nice and smoky, though the bacon was just flung on top, the Parmesan was non existent and the tequila butter added nothing to the dish. The worst fried catfish I've ever had, no exaggeration. The breading was burnt, the filet was leaking oil, and it tasted of old grease. Okay, so I'm not a meat-eater, but I'm a fan of Lucy's because of their live music events. Every year at SXSW, Lucy's hosts four days' worth of half-hour music sets in their covered patio area. It gets pretty crowded and spread out, like a tent revival, and they do a brisk business in beer and chicken. So what did I eat there, you might wonder? Well, their salads are much more than mere lettuce, because this is Austin and we have actual vegetarians in residence, and their fried okra is perfection. Desserts look excellent, as well, but don't go so well with beer, and my SXSW rule is that noon is an acceptable hour to order a brew. Your mileage may vary on some of the more creative appetizers, like fried deviled eggs. Burn It Bowls are popular. Parking is scarce when it's busy, like most places downtown, and you'll likely be walking from someplace you found on the street. Make sure to check for no parking/limited parking signs. My wife and I went up to Austin for a few nights to visit our oldest son. The second day, we decided to meet for lunch. We let them choose for us, since we aren't locals. The only rule was that we didn't want to go to any place that was also available to us in San Antonio. They chose Lucy's Fried Chicken. It was a wonderful choice. We ordered some deep fried deviled eggs to start, only because I am a deviled egg mega fan, and it sounded frapping outrageous. We liked them, but they did not have the traditional filling that all our lily-white grandma's use. They were still pretty delicious, but just a tad salty. We ordered a bucket of chicken to share. It came with twelve pieces: three wings, three thighs, three drumsticks, and three breast "pieces". I used quotes there because they clearly cut what most of us call a breast into two pieces. It made it really hard to tell them apart from the thighs. But, don't get the torches... It also made it possible for more than two people to eat a breast. For me personally, that is the last piece in the bucket I would reach for. I prefer thighs, wings, and drumsticks, in that order from favorite to least favorite. (As a child, my mother cut the chicken so that there was a piece called "the back". That is my absolute favorite piece, but you can only get that at home.) The chicken was really good. It was not greasy at all, and the coating on it was super tasty. I preferred the thigh I ate, because it was a lot juicier than the drumstick and wing. Lucy's has an amazing selection of sides. I had the collard greens. Let me tell you, I have never had better. That's right, even my mother's collard greens weren't as good, and Mama made some damned good greens! The others had macaroni and cheese and mashed potatoes. They seemed satisfied with them. I looked at the mashed potatoes and asked my wife if they were really "smashed potatoes". She said they were. In my family there is a difference. Smashed potatoes are boiled potatoes that Mama would smash up a bit and leave a little chunky. Mashed potatoes were mashed to a paste with cream and butter added in. I always preferred the smashed to the mashed. Okay... we got through that. Is everyone still with me? Let's talk dessert. We ordered two. We got a piece of S'mores pie and a piece of Elvis pie (a layer of chocolate topped with peanut butter cheesecake with bananas). The chocolate part of both pies was pretty much the same. It was thick, gooey-chewy, and rich. The marshmallow for the s'more was a huge piece of toasted house made marshmallow. Both pies were topped with expertly crafted fresh whipped cream. I only had one small bite of each of the pies. I made sure that my fork was loaded with all of the components. Both of them were wonderful just on the chocolate part alone. The Elvis pie had an upper layer of the most delicious peanut butter mixture. The menu said it was cheesecake. I didn't get that. It was more like a mixture of heavy cream, powdered sugar, and peanut butter. Who cares? It was awesome. I can't wait to go back to Austin and eat some more of the down home offerings at Lucy's. I mean, they have everything I love on that menu: chicken livers, chicken gizzards, grilled chicken, fried chicken spaghetti, chicken fried steak, calf fries, chili, catfish, oysters, and wedge salads to name a few. I almost always sit at the bar and the service is fantastic! Bloody Mary specials and local beers on draft. You can order fried chicken a la carte and I just get a breast and a side which is perfect for a quick lunch! Oh, and the jukebox!! Love! The patio is great for big groups especially with kids! this place is absolutely fantastic. the atmosphere is classic austin with most seating being picnic tables outside and the walls covered in chalk signatures from previous guests. they have fantastic daily drink deals and the drinks very tasty. we started with the chili cheese tots which was a big serving but absolutely incredible. could easily be shared between 4-5 people as an appetizer. my boyfriend got the chicken sandwich which he was pretty impressed with. i got the chicken and waffles which was incredible. if i was on death row, chicken and waffles would be my final meal and this was the best chicken and waffles i've ever had. the waffle is perfection and the chicken mouthwatering (i did chicken tenders as a substitute) but the star is their honey butter. over all i loved the experience. chelsea was an amazing server and we had a wonderful time! can't wait to come back and bring friends!!! read more

We had high hopes of this being a hidden gem, but we were disappointed in the food. We visited the Cedar Park location on a Tuesday night. We were the only customers there when we arrived around 6:30. During the hour or so that we were there only a couple came in as well. On the food. The catfish tasted dirty and farmed, not a fresh, clean taste of fresh caught catfish. The fish in the fish and chips was a bit mushy. The bone in chicken, which I had the highest hopes for was rather bland. The chicken didn't taste marinated and the breading could use more zing. We happened 2 make reservations at Lucy's Fried Chicken because we were a large party of co-workers. I was not really upset that we were eating under a tent and on a dirt floor actually thought it was kind of cool. The people in Austin say Keep Austin Weird and there was definitely that on this lay there that night. From kids rolling around in the parking lot and in the dirt to angry cops telling you that although you can park here you'll probably get towed anyway. The general rule of thumb is when you have 20 to 30 people coming you assign more than one server to that group and or party and I'm not sure they grasp or understood the concept because we had to wait a really long time for our drinks and they were few and far between when they did come. The fried eggs and by Friday I mean deep fried eggs they were deviled eggs and they were actually pretty good not what you would expect. We also got some Rocky Mountain Oysters which are balls of some sort. Those went over well. We also had a veggie plate that had kale on it and there's just no excuse for anyone to do anything with kale but look at it lol. We ordered 10 buckets of chicken to share with the tables at $25 a bucket. I'm not going to lie, I've had better chicken at KFC. I did not find that the chicken was particularly flavorful as it seemed like the batter was missing something maybe some seasoning salt pepper something. I mean don't get me wrong I still ate it and enjoyed it and it was delicious but it just didn't seem like it was worth $25 a bucket. One thing that I really Justified for putting three stars on the review is the lack of bussing tables as a tables were super narrow and small and plates as you can imagine piled up very quickly and we ended up stacking them and putting them on the dirt floor because there was no where else to put them. Went exploring around Lake Travis from Pflugerville and heard good things about this place...gave it a one due to it being the only star that would let me start this review. Server took 20 minutes from the time we sat down outside to come take our drink order in, we ordered an appetizer and our drinks. Our server brought our drinks and took our food order. NEVER put our appetizer in. Food came out...mine was cold and my husbands wasn't far behind. The sunset was this restaurant's only saving grace. Will give one more try if there is incentive to do so. They have a nice spot just off south Congress with parking, and both indoor and covered outdoor seating, and the service was good. The food, however, is another story. Everything we ate was mediocre: fried chicken, mashed potatoes, tater tots, chicken fried steak, banana pudding, key lime pie. Nothing was special or especially good. The #mashedpotatoes had a kick to it due to the cracked black pepper, the chopped chicken was fried before and then chopped so you get wonderful crunchy nibblets. And that luscious gravy really brought it all in together. The pie was a freaking blast to experience. When you bite in a rush of #sweettea overwhelms you and the aftertaste of like the filling for #pecanpie. AND THE WHIP CREAM WAS SO DENSE AND CLOUDY. My partner and I tried Lucy's after a trip to Nashville - we tried Hattie B's and Gus's while on vacation there and wanted to be able to compare Lucy's to the two Nashville restaurants. I gotta say - I don't know if I like Hattie b's or Gus's more but I can tell you Lucy's definitely comes in last place compared to the two. The service was amazing and the food was definitely delicious I just wouldn't highly recommend it. I plan on going back to try the bone in fried chicken instead of the chicken strips - I will update this review if that changes my mind at all! read more
