It's appearance is deceptive; it's just a tiny, eclectically decorated diner style eatery attached to a bar that gives no hint to the quality of the food. I have one word for you: MACHACA!!!!! Whether it's the Machaca breakfast, the Machaca dinner plate, or a simple Machaca burrito, it is AWESOME!!!! They have items that my family likes to order, like the BLT, Huevos Rancheros, tacos, and hamburgers, but I can't tear myself away from the Machaca! How the hell did I wind up in El Paso? Eh, I'll make the best of it, where's the nearest dive authentic Tex-Mex cantina? Ah! Alli esta! So I walk in the bar section, look for a seat, "Wow, that's a lot of bikers..." This is great for authenticity purposes, but seriously I stick out like a sore thumb here, and frankly if anyone there heard my opening statement from above, they would be perfectly justified in giving me the beat down I deserved. So I head toward the simply furnished breakfast nook, yeah the tables are greasy and the service is poor but this only excites me more. I ask the waitress what she thinks is best, she tells me that they are famous for the machaca burrito but she prefers the tacos antonia. The machaca is essentially everything in a normal burrito plus scrambled eggs. While not necessarily bad, it's the most bland dish I've ever had. The tacos however....hmmmmmmm, I'm liking them. The meat is a little greasy but the fresh cabbage, homemade taco shell (really the best part) and some seasoning sprinkled on the outside of the shell, make this a 4 star meal. So why the 3 stars then? Umm, it just doesn't deserve it, if nothing else, for lack of effort. This is a bar first and foremost. read more

My partner loves their machaca and I rotate what I order there. Honestly, food for me is hit and miss. One day I like the flavor, the next visit I regret that I went (for the rest of the day). But what gets me is the consistent poor service. Yes the waitresses are nice but for all the times I have eaten there I cannot remember once getting my drink refilled without me walking up to register or waving someone down (I have even put the empty glass right on the edge of the table and watch the girl look right at it as she walked by and keep walking. Never a follow up after they drop of the plate either...and yes, we do tip so I know it isn't us plus I have observed other tables that seem to never get refills unless they wave someone down. Again, only reason I go is because my partner loves their machaca but I would never take or recommend the place to someone.... read more

The food at Lucy's is solid, but not great. It is dirt cheap though, which makes the culinary mediocrity easier to accept. What I really want to talk about in this review, however, is King's X, the bar next door. It's a little grimy, a little divey, and really cheap -- my favorite bar in El Paso to knock back a couple of cold Shiners. read more

I had never had Machaca before coming to Lucy's. They served it with this incredibly delicious cheese sauce. (See Norby J's photo downstream)... I've been to other Mexican restaurants since, but have never had another Machaca plate as delicious as this. Or that incredible cheese sauce. Have been a fan of Lucy's for over 20 years for mostly lunch/dinner but they serve a good breakfast. While there are some Mexican food restaurants with a little higher quality, adding the slightly lower cost gives Lucy's a 4-star in a city with plenty of competition. Be forewarned this is not a raised pinky establishment, but there's usually a choice of dining in the restaurant or the adjacent Kings X bar with some of El Paso's more colorful citizens perched on a barstool for your entertainment. Don't worry they are harmless. The sauces can differ in hotness from day to day but this is true of most Mexican food joints in the El Paso/Las Cruces area. Want constant blandness? Stick with Pace picante sauce. Concerts and athletic events can pack Lucy's but haven't had an issue getting a meal. read more

I cannot believe how I was treated today .. made the drive for some menudo and I arrive and I order a bowl of menudo... 45 minutes later I go ask about my food, 20 min later I ask if I should cancel. He says the food is right there coming out next ... 10 min later thinking since it was coming out they'd bring out to me. NOTHING. Been coming here for years, never ever been treated like this. My first Mexican Breakfast! The Manchaca Plate is the best breakfast I have ever eaten. Shredded beef or chicken (I went Beef) seasoned with tomatoes, onion, and egg smothered in a generous serving of Lucy's own Chile Con Queso. Hash browns and salsa are served on the side, along with decried beans. I enjoyed this breakfast twice while in El Paso on business. read more

I came here because my phone gave me the directions to here, instead of Lucys Cafe. Since I was craving a burrito, I asked yelp but I ended up having the worst burrito I've ever had. I assumed their flour tortillas would be freshly made, but they're store bought. They didn't have Deshebrada so they improvised and I was served a brisket burrito with the most bland "colorado." Lucy's is situated in a cramped space off of Mesa between downtown and UTEP. Reminiscent of a 50s bar stool diner, it serves up great Mexican food to a lot of regulars and those that have been let in on the secret. The Machaca plate is excellent and the Juevos Rancheros are really good, too. The price, convenience, atmosphere, taste, and friendly staff all make this a must go to restaurant in El Paso. read more

If ever a place survived off ONE dish, this is it. Lucy's machaca kills it. I have been here a hundred times and don't think I've ever ordered anything else. Come to think of it, I've never seen anyone order anything else. Good reason. Perfectly shredded beef topped with a cheesy chef's special sauce, served with soggy hash browns, refried beans, and a tortilla. Never mind the the gun fight taking place in the King's X parking lot (the bar that shares two interior doors with Lucy's). No innocent bystanders at Lucy's has ever been hit by a stray bullet (yet). read more
