Came here to get a quick bite and ordered 5 rolled tacos and left an $1.70 tip. The total was almost $10 and I got some really low quality rolled tacos. Lucys Taco Shop is located on C Street in Downtown San Diego, serving the community tacos, burritos, and classic Mexican dishes. I came through on a weekday right before the lunch rush and was able to order right away. They have your typical Mexican dishes such as burritos and enchiladas, and they also serve breakfast as well. Inside is brightly painted orange and yellow and has beautiful Hispanic decor to set the ambiance. I went ahead and ordered the California burrito and decided to dine in. Right after I ordered the lunch rush, I came in from all the businesses around but mainly from the San Diego Court that is directly in front of it. My California burrito was ready in no time and was presented nicely cut in half and ready to be eaten with red salsa to complement it. The burrito came with Carne asada, French fries, and cheese. The meat was seasoned well, but there was no snap back when chewing it. While eating it, the meat seemed extremely soft and mushy. The French fries balanced everything out and paired perfectly with meat. The cheese was extremely melted, which had a nice cheese pull when eating it. The tortilla was hot and toasty and grilled to the right degree, but I felt it was a little dry, and it needed a more lard to flour ratio. Overall, it was a solid good spot for a quick lunch that tasted good and easy on the wallet. Food - Fine. Service - Fine. Ambiance - Fine (typical taco shop). Price - OMG! We have been Lucy's customers for years. Lucy's has been steadily raising prices since COVID. I consider rolled tacos a light single-item snack. Days past, rolled tacos came with cheese and guacamole with no "upcharge." They are usually on menus in numbers of 3, 5, or 6 as a single item. We wanted a light lunch with just water to drink. On this occasion, we had two orders of 5 rolled tacos with guacamole. Keep in mind, the average markup for restaurants is 280% to 320% or roughly three times the cost of the food. That sounds high, but restaurants have a higher overhead that grocery stores. But Lucy's charges double this! Rolled Tacos - Each order was $7.99 ($1.60 per taco). Guacamole was an additional $2.00 for each order...a total of $19.98. You can add another $3.00 for a 15% tip. Guacamole - Walmart sells avocados for 96¢ each; Lucy's likely pays much less by ordering in larger quantities. Lucy's guacamole is clearly a mix of other ingredients, and is a bit watery, leaving me with the impression it is being "cut" to save on using avocados. I estimate Lucy's used 1/4 of an avocado on each order. Assuming they used 1/2 an avocado, that is about 48¢ at Walmart prices, or a 733% markup. Lucy's received an additional 60¢ tips from me on this "upcharge." Bottled Water: Lucy's gets their bottled water from Costco. Assuming they pay what I do, they paid 29¢ for each bottle, which includes the CRV. They mark this up 590% to $2.00 each, not including the additional 15% tip (30¢). Total Cost, including a 15% tip: $29.72! See a copy of the (redacted) receipt, attached. Had we gone to In-N-Out, the cost of a FULL MEAL would have been under $20. I would have had unlimited access to soda or water and I would not have felt obliged to leave a tip (In-N-Out does not have tip jars or include tip options on credit or debit card payment screens), yet their service and food are both great and consistent (e.g. no "...Carne Asada burrito was dry and full of unchewable gristly pieces." see review of February 6th). To the Restaurant: I seriously doubt your overhead justifies such prices or markups. Though inflation has hit us all, any increase in price to the business for food cost are covered by the normal 280% to 320% markup - ANY markup of 590% to 733% or more is taking advantage of your customer base. Unfortunately, you have lost me; but other customers have gained my voice against you when discussing places to eat. I suggest a rapid review and change. You will likely find a decrease in prices is well covered by the increase volume (see the lines around the block at any In-N-Out as an example). COVID is over, lower your prices!!!!! read more

Came here to grab a quick lunch. The location isn't the best, but close enough to the city hall so that you feel safe. I think most people grab n go here. Menu options have plenty of things! Allen ordered a CA burrito and it as the size of his forearm. HUGE! Only for $11.98 too! Worth it. No guac inside, but tons of meat and fries. The red hot sauce they give really has a nice kick to it. I ordered a carne asada torta for $12.50. I really enjoyed it! A lot of meat, melted cheese, refried beans. Slight bit of salsa. Where do I begin. I had been told this place wasn't the greatest, but I was hungry and figured I'd find out for myself. Prices on the menu shocked me a little as they are a bit high. The meat is honestly odd to me. A mushy consistency that i just can't get behind. Also seriously lacking flavor. Chips look and taste as if they came from a bag instead of being made in house. I've eaten at most of the restaurants within the few blocks radius of where I work. Based on the yelp reviews, I've actually have been hesitant to try Lucy's. The reviews seemed to project that it was highly overpriced, mediocre at best Mexican food. The store front is close to the Bail Bonds on West C Street and the train tracks.. and the place mostly seems empty during the week. This week, however, I was desperate enough to give it a try. Needed something quick and easy to eat.. so I called in my order for a California burrito. They were curt but polite on the phone. They only take the order.. no name.. number.. etc. Nor do they tell you how long it will be before your order is ready. I can't help but notice the nearly 43% price increase between the two menus posted in the photos ($5.29 in 2009 vs. $7.50 in 2015).. I guess that's the going rate for 2015. The lady at the counter was stern.. polite enough.. and efficient. Shouted back my phone order through the window and it was ready to go. $8.10 including tax. She threw in a few hot sauces and off I went. Noticed there were a few patrons dining in. Burrito wasn't as small as some prior reviewers claimed to be. It's a good 9 inches long.. and regular sized in width. Standard tortilla.. french fries weren't as crispy as another reviewer hailed them to be.. the meat was well-seasoned.. more on the peppery and saucy side.. and it was only cheese and pico de gallo. Pretty plain for a California burrito.. but also pretty standard. i ate two halves (so from the middle).. and there was a bit of grease at the ends.. but nothing too crazy. The hot sauce has a kick.. and it's not too bad. Overall, it's not bad.. it's not great. Everything in downtown is expensive.. so it does what it needs to do for a quick mexican food lunch. It's definitely not a go-to location for Mexican food; nor a place I would rave about or refer to other yelpers. But if you're in the area.. not wanting a sandwich, and Chipotle has yet another E. (I work nearby) Today 11/20/19 I ordered the Pollo Asada fries and the fries were literally brown with grease and soggy but I didn't notice until I got all the way back to my job so I ate them an hour later I was throwing up and had diarrhea and my body started weakening, i had chills & stomach pain! San Diego is supposedly known for their amazing taco shops and Lucy's is one of the better and more consistent ones I have ever experienced. It's a little difficult to find but keep your eyes peeled for the taco shop flag planted on the sidewalk. Or just follow all the suit and ties rushing to stand in line during lunch time. You'll notice the neighboring sandwich shop next door remains barren no matter the line at Lucy's. Almost everything on the menu is solid; hard shell tacos, burritos and rolled tacos being the best. This is a no fuss no mess type of place. Place your order and grab a seat. The are usually very quick even when there is a lunch crowd. They just updated their seating to allow for bench seating along with additional chairs outside. Call it 2.5. It's ok. There are only 1500 better Mexican dives in San Diego. The portions are extra large and greasy but the food is just average. If you visit, make sure to head west on C Street to check out all the bailbonds storefronts along the way.
