Oh how Clayton's has fallen! I used to come here all the time but now they just raise prices while adding more filler ingredients. If you get a cali burrito it will just be fries. If you get a breakfast burrito it will just be cheese. I got a bacon breakfast burrito that was half cheese and I think they full on just didn't put bacon in it. We went to Clayton's Mexican Takeout in Coronado, and it was great! The food is delicious and tastes like an authentic San Diego taco shop. I ordered the carne asada quesadilla, and it was so good. I've grew up on island and have frequented mto for a long time. In the last year Coronado has added 2 spots on Orange (to my knowledge) and they're both just awful. Crack taco slop over next to the blue bridge Mecca and the private equity taco shop on 9th. I'm not sure which spot is more upsetting as they both have awful quality and bs prices. Clayton's might not be the best Mexican food in the world, but they're fast, reasonably priced relative to portions of and competitors, they've been holding it down forever, and every now and then I get a California that catches me off guard being a little better than normal and makes my day. Don't go to crack taco slop or the private equity taco shop where all the middle schoolers hang out. read more

The $5 breakfast burrito was simple and perfect but what put it over the top and made it a five-star experience was their two hot sauces. One was smokey and red, the other was creamy and green. Don't get me wrong, I love Clayton's and it's a easy go to on the island or when I'm craving a nice burrito, but as of late (last few months) our (always) as-is order has differed from orders past. For example, the chipotle chicken burrito use to have a creamy chipotle sauce and sour cream on it, and probably the past 3 orders have not contained it, leaving the chicken a little dry. Was hoping it was a random flute, but now it seems like a pattern. Just hoping to bring this to the MOD's attention so they can either update the menu to reflect the changes to the ingredients, or maybe a menu refresher for the team is needed. Thanks! read more

I can see if you don't like spicy and the salsa wasn't added it might be a little dry but the two house made salsa given with the order were incredible and rich with flavor Cash register wasn't accepting cards when we got there but luckily we had just enough cash to cover breakfast and a tip. read more

We ordered 9 breakfast burritos from here the morning after my sisters wedding, and it was the perfect breakfast! They were delicious, LOVED that they come with beans for those of us who don't like meat in our breakfast burritos. We were able to call in the take-out order, and pick up/pay at the time we gave them for pickup. worked really well. Only thing I will say is if you do this, get the name of whos helping you on the phone, becuase there was some confusion as to where to pick up, got sent from the cafe to the pick up window, to the mexican takeout only to be sent back to the takeout window where the order was already waiting. I ordered the Cali burrito with guac and lettuce. The service was quick and friendly. As I sit here and write this, I'm having a small existential crisis. The burrito itself is so large, I initially thought I should use it for bicep curls rather than eating it for brunch. More than any other burrito I've had on my many decades on this planet, every. single. bite I took was incredible. The flavors were perfectly balanced, the fries were just the right size, the green sauce was perfectly complimentary, and the guac was creamy and delicious. More importantly, the overall distribution of all of these elements throughout the burrito is what elevates it to a work of art, such that I feel legitimately guilty eating it. The crisis I face now is three-fold, I still have like 25% of this monster left. I SHOULD stop eating it, I'm full. Second, like I said earlier, every bite is so immensely enjoyable that I don't know if I am ABLE to stop. And finally, there's a voice in the back of my head that keeps saying, "Dude. I think this may have ruined all other burritos for you." Frankly, that thought is terrifying. But if I'm being honest, if that winds up being the case? Worth it. read more

Normally a HUGE fan of Clayton's to the point that my wife and I ate there weekly, but we just experienced such a surprising, disappointing visit. The cashier was rude and seemed to want to get rid of us as soon as they could. My sister-in-law order carne asada soft tacos for $10.23 and only received 25¢ back. Not a big deal, but still felt odd that they deliberately only handed her a quarter after telling her that her change was 77¢. She also asked for limes and didn't receive any even though they told her they'd give her some. My wife and I's California Burrito has pineapples in it for no reason and didn't have all the way melted cheese (just cold shredded cheese). Typically such a professional, delicious experience but this really turned us off and hope that management addresses this. Oh 'em gee this place is amazing! I preferred it when it was a hidden gem, but the food is just as amazing. It's just a LOT busier now. I had the Veggie Burrito but I subbed black beans for refried beans and ground beef for the rice. Sorry, but that's how I like it!! So good. Perfect and didn't fall apart even though it also had lettuce, cheese, & sour cream. Next time I will not let my husband make me eat it in the car. I need to sit down and enjoy this beast of a burrito. The service is fast and efficient. This is a hidden gem of Coronado. I can no longer come to the crown island without stopping for a burrito. My absolute favorite is the Coronado burrito while the California burrito has my husband's heart. The burritos are the perfect amount of massive wrapped in the tastiest, softest tortillas I've ever had in my life made by Santa Fe Tortillas (you can find the same tortillas at Sprout's in East Lake! DELICIOUS.) Their burritos come with hot sauce and the green one is my go-to. Burritos range from about $8-14 but for the size, taste, amount of filling - they don't skimp on the meat and guac - it's worth it. I'm a penny pincher and I promise you these burritos are worth the dimes. In the last few years they added a soda fountain where you can mix flavors. They also have a fridge of fun quirky glass bottle sodas as well as cans. read more
