I've had Luella's Southern Kitchen on my list for a while, and my friend and I finally made it in. They did not disappoint. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It gives you a family dining room vibe.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They were out of pancakes, but we tried the Nashville Hot Chicken and Waffles, strawberry cream French toast, biscuits and gravy, beignets, and a brisket egg pie. The chicken was cooked to perfection, and everything tasted fresh and made to order. The biscuits and gravy had a lot going on flavor wise, and I did not try them with the pimento cheese, but everything else was a hit. The only area for improvement I noticed was during table cleaning. Staff were spraying cleaning chemicals near customers' food, and food was brought to the table immediately after handling the cleaning products. A little more attention to food safety practices would go a long way. Overall, the food was delicious, service was friendly, and I would definitely come back, especially to try those pancakes next time.
I was very excited to try this place and while it wasn't a bad experience, I don't think I'll be back any time soon. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The way their restaurant is set up is unique. You have to wait to be seated, but you have to go up to their register to order.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Not terrible, but it is like half of the experience of going to a sit down restaurant. We ordered our food but it took over an hour to come out. My mom got the chicken and waffles, and I have to say, their chicken is AMAZING. Best thing on their menu hands down. Unfortunately, they ran out of it for my other friend to order. I got the pancakes and bacon. I didn't care for the pancakes, truthfully, but my sister-in-law really liked them! All comes down to personal taste. I think their food is great but service definitely left something to be desired. Takes a while to even get water. Overall, with a few tweaks, I think this place could be great because the foundation is there.
This is a place where you order in front and sit down and wait to get your food. I felt a little rushed to make a choice due to other customers and decided on the breakfast sandwich. My brother got the shrimp and grits. I will say it felt like the service was a bit slow and we waited a bit for our food and even our drinks. Some people around us ordered the chicken and waffles which looked so good, it kind of overpowered what I was actually eating. It wasn't until I got home and ate my leftovers that I realized the breakfast sandwich was delicious. The egg was fluffy and the jam was yummy! My brother also enjoyed his food. We shared a side of Mac and cheese which I also thought was good. I would definitely return to try other things.
They close at 2pm, and we came around 12:45 on a Saturday. The host said it would be a 45 minute wait, but it only ended up being about a 15 minute wait. You order at the counter with the host, pick a table, and then they bring your food to you. We ordered the Nashville hot chicken and waffles, biscuits with jam, mac and cheese, bacon, and hash brown. I loved everything. The biscuits were so soft, the hashbrown was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, the mac and cheese was delicious, and the fried chicken was perfectly spiced and crispy. I was starting to get full but wanted to keep eating because it was so good. A minor complaint is that they forgot to give us silverware before bringing us our food. It also seemed like the servers weren't really paying attention to when the food was ready at the counter to bring to the tables, and at one point the kitchen staff even yelled at a server for not paying attention. It seemed like they were prioritizing cleaning up the restaurant before closing, even though people were still waiting on their food.
[[HIGHLIGHT]]This place is small and quaint with so much charm.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I absolutely loved walking in and hearing old-school music playing on a record player -- it felt like my daddy's music and instantly gave me a wave of nostalgia.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The service was great. Our waiter was friendly, attentive, and more than happy to answer any questions we had about the menu. And the food? EVERYTHING we ordered was amazing. The pancakes were fluffy with just the right amount of crisp around the edges. The chicken and waffles were perfectly crunchy and packed with flavor. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Such a cozy spot with great vibes and even better food.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I'll definitely be back!

The food came out quickly but fresh! I was blown away at the size and taste of the pancakes I would order again and again! The Mac was made to perfection, the bacon was caramelized and the hashbrowns were different, I think they were deep fried? Everything was a 10/10!!
Excited to try Luella's! About time since they've been in the neighborhood. Crab-stuffed shrimp and grits are fine, a little gritty but what do I expect lol. The collared greens have some meat on it so it's not vegetarian in case people are curious. The beignets were different than what I expected them to be: larger, more doughy, seems that there is cornmeal in it and maybe coconut? Not sure. All of them are still delicious. Compostible box packaging except for the collared greens. Prices in Yelp are outdated.
This is my first time trying southern food and 10/10 experience!!!! This place was packed when we came so the food came out a bit slow, and I felt so bad for the workers... they kept checking in on us and apologizing for the long wait time. The wait time was so worth it! My favorite was the biscuit and gravy and I will be thinking about it for a while
One last meal at Luella's before they move locations! You can never go wrong with their buttermilk fried chicken, which includes half a full chicken and collard greens. I always treat myself to a skillet cornbread and it is totally worth the wait! Quick and easy to order. You can find seating when it's not peak hours, but still very busy until the end.
So this was my first time trying Luella southern kitchen and I must say I enjoyed my experience. A friend and I decided to meet up for lunch after work and I ordered the chicken and waffles with mac & cheese and she got shrimp and grits with collard greens. I will say I wasn't the biggest fan of the waffle. I prefer a lighter waffle, and this one was a bit dense. The chicken was pretty tasty. It was very crispy which I don't mind. And well flavored. The mac & cheese was also pretty good but as a southerner (Alabama born) my standards are a little bit higher for mac & cheese. But I wasn't disappointed in the experience. My friend said her shrimp and grits were really tasty and they were very plentiful with the portion of seafood included. The grits were extremely creamy and very flavorful and it gave her a New Orleans vibe. She also really enjoyed her collard greens. Overall, the service was really good. You do have to order immediately upon entering and then finding a seat, but our staff was really pleasant and have beautiful smiles. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I loved the oldies that were playing on the record player. I thought that just gave it a beautiful vibe and nice environment.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I would definitely recommend having a nice Saturday or Sunday brunch here.
This menu is simple! The space is simple! The FOOD is unforgettable! The FOOD is outstanding! It's packed with flavor! It's fresh and more than enough! I had plenty of leftovers! We tried the shrimp & grits, that shrimp was juicy and tasty! The chicken and waffles, delicious and packed with flavor! The French Toast was raspberry and amazing, soft and fluffy with crispy edges. Service, you order up front, then go find a seat and wait for your food to be served. Owner came out and spoke with a few guest, including us, he was nice and friendly. Other staff were attentive and friendly as well. We will be back! It's small and was packed quickly after opening.
Wow this place SLAPS. The best recovery brunch of my life, the chicken and waffles (both Nashville and original flavors) are crispy, moist and delicious. Really nicely paired with the waffles. Good beignets but not my fave in the city (a lil more dense than my preference). Pretty good cream cheese grits (but I think I'm a cheddar girl). Amazing service, they made room for us so we didn't have to wait 1 hour. Perfect New Years Day brunch to kick off the year. Visited the new location on Kedzie today. Parking was easy and though the restaurant was a bit crowded finding seats was easy. I ordered at the front and took a seat to wait for my food. After about 30 minutes I got my chicken, French toast , mac& cheese and for dessert beignets. The chicken was fried perfectly, the French toast was thick and the gingerbread topping added a nice sweetness and crunch, my mac and cheese was good and the beignets were delightful!. It took a little time to get the food but when it arrived it was really good.

This is a super cute hidden gem with a tasty selection of southern cooking. The ambiance was nice. It felt very cozy and I loved the artwork and set up of the restaurant overall. The staff was super friendly and attentive to customers The food was delicious and I only wished I'd ordered more. I went close to closing and as I got my food another table had cornbread come out and I was jealous. I'd definitely recommend the sweet potatoes and fried chicken. Wow. A time was had. This was so so so soooooo good!! We arrived around 5/6 pm on a Friday and tables were almost all full. We both ordered the fried chicken, one with yams and the other with collard greens and a side of mac and cheese. We also got a cornbread to share. It does take a while for the food to come but it was so worth it. The fried church was perfectly crispy and the portions were huge. I tried the yams which were yummy! Mac and cheese was okay the cornbread was just chefs kiss!!! Will definitely return. read more

The Lincoln Square neighborhood is fortunate to have Chef Darnell Reed's gem of a restaurant Luella's Southern Kitchen ( named after his great grandmother). Open for Brunch and Dinner, as a native Southerner myself, I am not sure if I could think of a restaurant that better place in Chicago that represents all the amazing regional cuisine. From Chicken and Waffles, to my personal favorite Shrimp and Grits, I warn you that this is not the place to go if you're dieting , LOL. I've been coming to this restaurant for a long time, and the food almost never disappoints. This place is definitely consistent, which I appreciate. That said, on my latest visit, there were a couple of things that could use a little attention. The crab cake was tasty, but I felt it could use a little more of a kick. The cream-based sauce that came with it didn't really do it for me--I ended up using the sauce from the shrimp and grits instead, and that combo worked much better in my opinion.The collard greens were a miss this time. They were too watery and really lacked seasoning. I would've loved a thicker roux or just more flavor overall.Everything else on the plate was solid. I'll also note that service here is pretty much pay-first and then be served, which is fine, but the wait can be a bit long since there are only two people working in the kitchen. Just something to keep in mind if you're in a rush.The owner seems very hands-on--he's usually around keeping an eye on things, which I actually respect. Shows that he cares about what's going out to customers. Still one of my go-to spots, and I'll definitely be back. Just hoping for a little more flavor next time around. read more

The foods is good but very expensive and a rather limited when ordering online. I don't eat pork but I wanted the chicken and it comes with greens which are cooked with pork. In my greens were what appeared to me to be a pork penis but my sister said it's probably a pork tail. read more
I heard all great things about Luella's and decided to order recommended items from their menu for lunch today. Parking: Street parking was challenging, however I did find parking 1 block away. The place is fairly small and the place was crowded. Energy in the place was happy and bright. There was a line in front of the register. Tables were for small parties; there was even a table for one (1) at the front window (I will eat at a table for one next time, if needed) Diners looked happy and all the food on the tables looked amazing! Food: I ordered the Nashville Hot Chicken with Waffles and the Mac & Cheese. Chicken was perfectly fried, just the right amout of crispiness. I got Nashville hot sauce on the side. Maple syrup comes with waffle. Mac & Cheese was Cheesy and delicious, I saved some Mac & Cheese for later. Thank you, Luella's and friendly staff for a delicious experience! Located in Lincoln Square, this intimate Southern style restaurant was packed with customers. Luckily I was able to have take out and ordered their beignets. I was satisfied with their freshly baked pastries. I would come back again and try their brunch menu. read more

I rarely give a 5 star rating, but I honestly don't have anything negative to say about my experience. My server was friendly and attentive, every single item I tried off them menu was tasty and delicious, and you can just tell that all the food was made with love. I also loved the menu options, it's rare that food taste as good as it looks, but it was all bomb. I also love the detail of having a vinyl record playing while enjoying my meal. I would definitely recommend this place if you are looking for some good ol soul food. *Get the cream cheese grits as a side and thank me later. read more

Loved this place! Came here for an event with the tasting collective and I cant wait to come back! I was able to meet the owner and hear his story which made it 100x better. It's a small place, nothing fancy, where you order at the counter. Service was fast! My favorite was this fried chicken with grits and sweet corn. This tastes like thanksgiving. Every bite was so flavorful. I also had the cherry ice cream desert. This was a bit too sweet for me, I was only able to take a few bites. Everything was delicious. You can tell a lot of love goes into each meal! Cant wait to come back and try more! read more

The wait staff makes a huge difference. I was extremely excited to try out Luella's Southern Kitchen after seeing the quality photos posted online of the chicken. Also, knowing it was in an area where I have had some stellar food in the past, I was intrigued to try it. The first thing I will note is there isn't a host or waiter, but someone did come to greet us and give us instructions on how to order, which you do through a QR code, or you could order at the counter, and someone will bring the food to you. The interior was excellent, with home-feeling colors of green and brown, like my mothers kitchen. Substantial wooden tables I will say some of the tables need to be balanced. Even though it wasn't as crowded, it was loud and hard to talk. I think it just has to do with the way sound travels in space. Ok, let's get to the food. Everything varies depending on your taste buds. I got the classic chicken and waffles but asked a staff person to put the chicken off to the side so I could taste the quality of both the waffle and chicken. The chicken was breaded to perfection but needed a bit more seasoning. The same could be said for the waffle. Which was good, but I wasn't a fan of the dough, but again this is just my taste--the eggs were good and fluffy. My friend for the Salmon croquettes, which looked amazing, and she said it was ok. She also got the greens which we both shared. I thought they were the highlight, but she thought they were okay. I washed it all down with a cup of coffee with cream and got a side of honey. Overall, the experience at Luella's was ok. I most definitely want to give this place another try. There were a few items on the menu I wanted to try again. The food quality was excellent, but the taste needs some improvement and may work well for the demographic in the area. This is hands down one of the best brunches I've had in my life. The Mac and cheese is so garlicky and creamy. Just the right around of cheese. I could eat this all day. 10/10. The chicken and waffles Nashville hot were also fantastic. That Nashville hot sauce pairs so well with the butteriness of the waffle and the sweetness of the syrup. Previously the best chicken and waffles for me had been from Hash House a Go Go but I think this now has the #1 spot for me. It is a TON of food. You can easily share. I had to take leftovers because you get 3 whole pieces of chicken. I think 2 wings and a breast. This will be a must a stop for me everytime I'm in Chicago. Just a heads up the place is small so I wouldn't recommend walking in unless you have time to wait. I believe our wait was over an hour. If possible make a reservation in advanced but regardless it is worth the wait. read more

I cannot believe it to took me so long to go here!!! Quite literally the best chicken and waffles that I've ever had, EVER. You order up front and then get a table but if you come on the weekend after noon, expect to wait since it's pretty small! Completely worth the wait. I've never had dinner but I'm biased and just keep wanting to go back for brunch! The shrimp and grits look small but they're SO filling. The beignets are good too! I came here by myself so the portions were a bit big so I recommend coming with someone so you can try more things and share. The restaurant feels very authentic and the service was great as well. For southern comfort food standards, this just ain't it!! My portion of 'buttermilk' chicken was on the greasy side and significantly smaller than the portions of nearly everyone else around me.. no fair! The chicken itself was nicely moist and tender at least. Did not taste any seasoning, however, other than salt (not even a little pepper)! The little bottle of honey on the side was nothing special and a bit too viscous. And the accompanying collard greens didn't save it much either. Was swimming in a pool of oil and mixed with what seemed to be shredded duck. Not a fan. The candied yams were so sweet, sweet, sweet.. I thought I'd need an emergency trip to the dentist!!! Why were some of them burnt by the way? And so was the iced tea (which wasn't even supposed to be sweet)! The 'baked brisket mac' tasted very artificially smoky, almost if they had thrown an entire bottle of smoke liquid in there. Also, bread crumbs do not belong on mac whatsoever. I know they do a version without the crumbs, so maybe I would've enjoyed that instead. But from my experience, I swear you're better off ordering some mac from Chick Fil A!! The buttermilk biscuits were decent: warm and fluffy like they should be, not cold and rock hard. While I appreciated the owner's kindness, the overall quality of everything certainly did not justify the $70 spent and wait time of about 30 minutes. Will not be coming back for the brunch. First time order - salmon crab cakes and grits (supposed to also come with carrots and have me green beans instead- no call. Just replaced without confirming). -salmon cakes: they're ok. Completely fell apart so I feel like I actually got to try them it was just eating a spoonful or seasonings. -grit balls (maybe?): hollow!!! I expected a ball full of grits at least but it was most just the fried dough... Also you can tell they cook this with the same dough/breading for beignets. There was a slight chocolate aftertaste. Not what I was with grit balls. Green beans: may at well been freshly picked. I get some people like them crunchy but no. Just no. This isn't Southern at all (I'm from Alabama, I may have an inkling). No silverware. No napkins. Yes, I selected the box in my order to include them. My order was at 740pm and they close at 9... I heard about this place from Yelp and social media so I had to check it out. This place does not accept reservations only for parties smaller than 10. You will have to come in and place your name on a list than wait. There was some issue with our reservation the young lady working at the counter did not write our correct phone number. Fortunately we were able to get seated. They have contactless ordering once you are seated at the table you scan an QR code. It can take over an hour to get your food so don't go on an empty stomach or you will be hangry when you get your food. I walked to the serving counter to inquiry about our order and one of the servers began to apologize. They were literally pulling our chicken out of the grease and plate it in front of me. The server delivered our food and apologized for the delay. The food was delicious . I requested for my order of beginets that they were just dropping in the grease to be bagged. For the inconvenience the server threw in a bag of Luella's popcorn. The only excuse the server had was that their were busy. Although we noticed people who came in after us got their food. Mind you we arrived at 6:30pm and had to wait for a seat but didn't get our food to around 8:30pm. Fyi, this place is BYOB. read more

The food was soooo good! Really nice portions. The servers were on top of it! Kept checking in periodically and made sure we had everything we need! We went on a Thursday night so it was pretty chill vibe and seats still available. We didn't have to wait long for our food! I got the Shrimp and Andouille Mac&cheese.Wow! It was so creamy and flavorful. The guys ordered two Nashville chicken and waffles and they were amazing! Chicken was juicy and crispy fry, not greasy at all, the waffle so fluffy and that sauce . My friend ordered the chicken and sausage gumbo! It was soooo flavorful ! Everything was so good!! We all split the sweet potato's also a 10/10 Looking forward to coming back! read more

Its very busy during lunch so you might want to go either very early or very late. I left my name at the front however they never called me to let me know that my table was ready, I had to follow up. This is what I'm talking about when I say soul food and southern hospitality! My friend and I arrived a few minutes before they opened and there were already folks gathering around. That's when you know the food is legit! We were warmly greeted by a gentleman (who we think owns the restaurant) and he explained the QR code process -- which I must say, super easy if you're dining with multiple people and don't want to struggle with splitting the bill. We shared the chicken & waffles and gumbo. The chickens and waffles was insane! The chicken was so juicy and tender and the waffles were the perfect sweet/crunchy vehicle. And for the chicken gumbo, spot on! I have had gumbo in NOLA several times and this comes pretty close. Full of rich flavors and the perfect meal on a gloomy chilly day. I've already recommended this place to my friends, and I'll certainly be back to try to biscuits and cornbread! read more

I've been wanting to check this place out for a while! We came around 5:30pm on a Friday. Parking wasn't too bad to find and we were warmly greeted and seated right away. We ordered via the QR code and the food was brought out as it was ready. We ordered the fried green tomatoes to start Biscuits and Jam Brisket Mac and Cheese Regular Mac and cheese Fried Chicken with Greens Fried chicken with Grit and Nashville Sauce in the side Waffle on the side The first thing I need to say the portions are amazing and the Nashville sauce is a must. And I'm glad I got it on the side. It was delish but I didn't need the chicken covered it in. Everything was super flavorful. The grits were very creamy. They have to be using heavy cream or something like that in them. The biscuits were flakey, and the Jam was great. Back to the chicken - it was fried to perfection! Yet we all agreed it was a tad bit too salty. The first piece didn't hit me but starting the second I definitely noticed it. My friend really enjoyed the brisket Mac and cheese. Food was really good and so was the service. The place is pretty small so keep that in mind when going with a large group of people. There isn't a waitress that comes around to the table to take your order, you have to go up front to the counter which wasn't horrible. Yo! Tried this place based on a recommendation from a brother from Nawlins! He recommended shrimp n grits and beignets. We chose to order the shrimp n grits, waffle, and salmon croquettes. First, the place is small, simple, and easy. The floating service team was helpful and attentive, though it wasn't that busy just yet. Contactless ordering and payment was easy as well, but I wasn't confident in making requests that way, but oh well, that's on me. The shrimp n grits were easily the best of the bunch. The shrimp were perfectly seasoned (a lot of places don't bother) as was the gravy. The grits were southern creamy and cheesy... Not soupy. It all came together perfectly. I'm a little particular about terminology lol. Salmon croquette traditionally contains breadcrumbs which give a slightly crispy texture. Wifey had never had one before so I was excited. These were more of a salmon patty, which I often make at home. These were good, with lots of flavor ,peppers and herbs mostly, but not special. Neither of us cared for the mashed potatoe corn concoction, but it was not bad. The waffle had a good flavor, perhaps included a spice like nutmeg. I left a Belgian with a crispy exterior and moist interior sand this didn't quite do that, but I still liked it. Didn't come with butter, so be sure you request on the front end. The last part is we took a 25 minutes taxi to get here. It's in a quaint neighborhood. I wish we had more time to explore the shops and bars. read more

RATING: 8/10 I've been wanting to try Luella's for some time and it did not disappoint! The chicken and waffles came in a HUGE platter, and it was so so tender. But for me, the star of the show was definitely the shrimp and grits--I've never tried grits before but that buttery savory flavor was unreal. Highly recommend this place for good quality southern food! read more

Can someone tell me what's going on with Luella's? I tried to order last Wednesday and they were closed, no one picks up the phone and their voicemail is full. Tried placing an Uber-eats order in advance today and have no idea if we'll get our food!
They are very much open and bustling! Sometimes they close for much needed r and r for the staff and family. Check out their popcorn too!
