The service was very personal and excellent. This is a family business in the best possible way. The only issue we had was of our own doing. We did not research the restaurant enough before going. It turns out that they serve their very special 12 dish Vegetarian food only on Wednesday and Fridays. That was what we were looking forward to having. Other days the serving are primarily meet (Lamb and Beef) with injera. No realy selection of veggies other than a salad. Went on a Wednesday for lunch with my cousin. It was pretty quiet at about 2:00 in the afternoon. We had a vegetarian platter, lamb awaze, and the beef and collard greens. Washed down with a large Pilsner. Everything was delicious! There was a great variety of veg- some cold, and some warm. All very well seasoned. It was a very colorful and textured platter which I appreciated. The lamb was just spicy enough and the collard greens with beef chunks was amazing / very tender and flavorful. The owners son explained everything and had great recommendations for what to order and how to reheat any leftovers. We came back the next day for an early dinner around 5:00 and brought our husbands who enjoyed it as much as we did! Definitely a keeper of you enjoy great Ethiopian food! read more

I'm in Las Vegas for a couple of days visiting my father in the hospital and really wanted to have some Ethiopian food because it's something I just can't get back home in Bakersfield, California. My father's nurse is from Ethiopia and spoke highly of Luhena so we headed here for a bite to eat. What we got was a culinary experience right up there with some of the best restaurant food I've had EVER, and definitely the best Ethiopian food I've had. The hostess warned us it would take a little bit of time for our food to be cooked because the chef (her mom) cooks the food TO ORDER and it isn't just precooked food sitting there waiting to be served. WHAT? WHAT? I essentially get a home cooked meal? SIGN ME UP. I used to live in the San Francisco Bay Area which has a number of good Ethiopian restaurants. I loved Ethiopian food so much, my ex husband and I ate it almost weekly. Luhena put them all to shame. My brother and I ordered the Kitfo, an Ethiopian style steak tartar and it was absolutely amazing. The flavors were so intense, yet not overwhelming and it was so tender. Best tartar I've ever had. It came with injera bread, French bread and another, somewhat crispy, bread that I've never had before. With some collard greens and cheese on the side it was possible to create the perfect bite in multiple different combinations. But the dish that knocked our socks off was the lamb aware tibs. The sauce was beyond incredible to the point where we soaked the last little bits of it up with the light and spongy injera bread that it came with. I have had a lot of Ethiopian food in the past, but this is the only place that served kitfo with the side of collards, cheese, and a different kind of bread. The restaurant itself is quite small, and the menu is not very big. However, the owner was very friendly and checked on us multiple times. The portion of kitfo was also quite generous. The interior is simple but quaint. Cafe Luhena is great, and their kitfo was very authentic/different, but if you are looking for a larger menu, you might want to try one of the many other Ethiopian restaurants in town. read more

I am so delighted I have found a restaurant with true AUTHENTIC Ethiopian food. This restaurant is family owned and operated by some really nice people who know how to cook. The restaurant itself is small, tidy, very clean, and gives you the sense of being invited to a cozy home. The menu selection is limited, but the entrees served are prepared fresh and are of high quality. I ordered three entrees: kitfo, tibs, and the beef and collard greens. Every dish was delicious! I also ordered the espresso, which was strong and flavorful. I was told by my server the beans were from Ethiopia and roasted daily at the restaurant. We wish we had the chance to experience the food! This place is the worst. We are hardcore foodies and have eaten Ethiopian food in Ethiopia and around the US. After being let down once again by Lucy's inconsistently good food and service, we decided to try a new place. Called Luhena to verify their hours. Manager said they closed at 7 but were closing early because they ran out of food. Weird. It was like 4:00. But okay. We called a week or so later to see if they were open and had food. Yelp said they opened at 12:30 but manager said they opened at 1 and don't come because they ran out of food again. We literally have called for three months and they keep running out of food earlier and earlier. How the ha-yo do you run a restaurant and consistently just run out of food and close three or four hours early?? My family was in the restaurant industry for 25 years and we NEVERRRR closed hours early or ran out of food! Everrrr!!! That's just not good business, guys. So BEWARE. 1. Call before you go (the hours on Yelp and they ones they display are NOT the hours they are open!) 2 Have a backup plan for your meal because they are probably out of food anyway! If it's only 2 of you, one veggie combo should be plenty and would only be $14. The restaurant has more space inside than it appears from the outside. No worries about feeling crowded. There's a tv that probably should have had something other than the news on, but that's a minor quibble. When we came in they were cooking coffee beans and the aroma was strong but satisfying. Good atmosphere. The service was polite and attentive. Talked with the head honcho for a bit and enjoyed his banter. Food! The food sets this place apart. Everything was fresh, homemade, and delicious. They asked us if we liked spicy and we said yes. The food did have a bit more spicy heat than I'd prefer but I still stuffed myself. If spicy heat isn't your thing just let them know. I won't describe all of their delicious food. But the veggie combo came with 7-8 different offerings. Collards, spinach, lentils, beets... a lovely variety. The lamb gave the meal some more spice and delicious savory meat and fat flavor. If you're not vegan, I recommend adding a meat. So good. Solid Ethiopian restaurant with a very small menu (usually a good sign--not a bunch of premade stuff, I figure). Unfortunately the veggie platter, which is my preference to get, is only available on Wednesdays. I settled on the ribs, a lamb dish which I have had at other restaurants. I'd say their version was solid but I wouldn't say it was the best I've had. In general this is how I would describe the experience--as a point of reference I've eaten at a number of Ethiopian restaurants including one of the best in the country (in Atlanta). So I'm not a novice and I have a fairly large base of comparison. One positive: the prices are very reasonable. I paid around $20 tip included for the meal. So thumbs up. read more
