I came here for lunch this week (in Martinez for Jury Duty). Was surprised to see a ton (probably 4 dozen) of flies buzzing around the seating area right when I walked in. Somehow the flies stopped short of the food counter. I probably should have turned around, but was pressed for time. I was surprised that I was the only other person there at the height of lunch time. Martinez is a sleepy town, but I expected with all of the court activity the place would be packed. This is my go to place for sandwiches in Martinez... but only if I'm taking it to go. I love love love the roast beef sandwich. I'm salivating even thinking about as I'm writing this. BUT, the deli itself feels dirty. We walked in one time and there was a dying roach to greet us by the door. Did that stop us from getting a delicious sandwich? Disgustingly enough, no! The service is also super slow, so make sure you have time to wait when you go. Also, I feel like it would help with the atmosphere if the workers have some kind of dress code. I am going to round up on this one. They have good sandwiches that re going to need a few napkins, but not as many as Ike's. For those that are onion sensitive, which I am, you are going to need them to go easy or pass on the onion. It is red onion and a little on the string side. I like that they have high quality meats, in this case Boars head. For those that like their candy in the liquid format, soda, there is a wall full of options. The cost is a little high. Martinez is pretty much limited with their selection of food so of course I had to give this a try since I'm always looking for a great sandwich. Sadly, I wasn't blown away by their sandwiches. You can make the sandwiches however way you want or order off their menu, so I did that. I always want to see what they can offer because if I just made my own, I think if would be pretty boring. I forget what I had off their menu, but I can tell you, I wasn't really impressed. I mean, I've gone to some authentic delis where they make your sandwiches with fresh cut meats and good cheese, but for whatever reason, the sandwiches just didn't quite pack the punch for me. Perhaps its their own sauce or lack their of, but I just wasn't impressed. On top of all that, it's not a cheap sandwich either. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I've been to other delis before and it just tastes like their sandwiches are made with love. It makes it easier for them to make your sandwiches when you mark it on their little menu pad, but I think that makes it feel like an assembly line order versus really listening to what you like. He's been going to Napa, Sonoma, Santa Rosa each day with sandwiches.. he looks for and finds people that can't get into shelters because they won't leave their animals or are off the beaten path and are Police or volunteers... he feeds them.. Usually I like to eat a couple times before leaving a review, but no point in reviewing if it'll only be for the AWESOME drinks that they order. Pros: great variety of drinks (super surprised to see maine root drinks), the desserts are delicious (doubt it's made in house), local businesses are the lifesblood of communities, and they have stamp cards! Cons: overpriced for a combo ($10 for a sliced bread sandwich+chips/cold salad+drink), sandwich was pretty meh (who puts thousands island dressing on a sandwich?), there wasn't much feedback about the items being sold (taste inquiry wise), and a lack of chip options. Overall: I would return to try a lot of their drinks (non alcoholic pop), maybe try a "build your own" sandwich is the direction I should've gone to get a full spectrum of their options, but you live and you learn. read more

Really, really slow. Took 20 minutes for 4 high-school-aged employees to make 4 sandwiches. Low-quality ingredients, stingy with produce, avocado comes out of a bottle, and the sandwiches were made wrong because the kids have no clue how to read your order form, nor their own menu, to double-check. Disappointing overall. I will never come back, but he liked the prosciutto sandwich, so he might. Do yourself a favor and go to the REAL and ORIGINAL Luigi's in Concord instead. read more

Ok. Stopped by for a sandwich for myself and ice cream cone for the kiddo. First off decor is dated and they were out of straws and it appears napkins as none of the dispensers in the table had any. We had to get them from the only full dispenser at the counter. However that's not the reason for my 2 stars. I think they're running some sort of low key hustle. It costs $9.99 for a combo meal. That's a sandwich, soda and chips. I also got the ice cream cone for the kid. Yet I looked at my receipt and I was charged $7.99 (sandwich) 1.99 (soda) and $0.79 (chips) and $2.00 (ice cream). They ran it as a to-go order which means I paid little tax. I checked my receipt while I was eating because I never asked for it to be "to-go" and noticed the charges. I brought it to the attention of the manager (not the guy who rang me up). He at first tried to tell me I was wrong and that 7.99 + 1.99 + .79= $9.99. Because I did not fail math, that argument did not work. Then he went and produced another ticket with $9.99 and $2.00 but changed how I was taxed to show me the same subtotal ($13.01). By charging me "to-go" and splitting it up that way, THEY keep more $$$. If I had been charged for my combo meal properly and taxed properly they would have made less than by splitting it up the way they did. Who knows how many ppl they've done this to. It's not a lot, it's 80 cents give or take, but ppl often don't even keep their receipts much less check them. If they skim another 80 cents off each meal deal, and they're literally a sandwich shop selling nothing but meal deals all day long, it's a nice way to make a little extra profit. The order system was unique & the different bottles of root beer & lemonade added a different kind of touch to a deli atmosphere. I ordered the peppered turkey on sourdough roll. It was so good, I went in for the kill and started pulling the turkey off of the sandwich! Yummy! A nice place tucked in the heart of downtown, with a little corner view of the street. Yesterday I took a break in the middle of a mid-trial settlement conference to get some food for me and my client. I went to Luigi's on Main Street in Martinez, ordering the spicy chicken sandwich without bread and a turkey sandwich for my client. This happened about 2pm. By 6pm I was getting back home, happy the case resolved, and my body started to hurt. By about 7pm, it felt like every square millimeter of my skin had its own red hot needle pricking it. When I closed my eyes, I could feel the muscular soreness of my eyeballs inside their sockets. I believe I have a very high tolerance for pain. Nonetheless I would be lying if I said that it wasn't one of the worst experiences I have ever had in my life. A few hours ago my client told me she experienced pretty much the same thing, making the experience officially traceable to Luigi's. Suffice to say we won't be going back there ever again. read more

Luigi himself is the worst part. The sandwiches and ingredients are top notch. The only downside is the proprietor. He's the only one that does the shopping and he does it as he pleases. On dozens of visits over the past year, I couldn't order what I wanted because they're out of ingredients. Sometimes they run out of so much, they can't make any food to serve. I have had to wait an extra 5 minutes for my order on a previous visit because he interrupted his working staff to have a meeting. On my last visit he complained that he would have to go to the bank to get more change when I paid with a $20, then he walked away from the register to leave everyone else in line to rot (not to go to the bank, but to hang with the refrigerator repair man and brag about his charity work). Every disappointment I've suffered when patronizing this place has been due to the namesakes presence. The worst of it is that he seems to have gotten rid of all the females on his staff. The new guys he's got working behind the counter are slow and not quite friendly. Retire and re-hire your female staff you salty coot. read more

Not my jam. Came in and ordered. We (2 of us)did a sandwich combo (10.99 each I think). We did not know that the combo was only a fountain soda and not the bottled ones. I went and grabbed my bottled one instead and the man ( i think the owner) ringing us up was like "oh thats not the right kind, but I will just ring it up differently". Ok- cool. The combo is supposed to come with a side or a chip. We were never given either. BOOOO. Did they exclude it because we wanted bottle soda? Forget? I will never know. This place was a surprise to find, inside is a variety of homemade deli delights including fresh, hot, meats, daily specials, soups and salads.
