I stopped by here for a weekday lunch with my brother. We had to ring the bell in the front to get the attention of any of the workers, who seemed rather surprised that there were customers. The waiter seated us inside and while we ate our lunch, not a single customer ate in the restaurant. There were 2 other customers that sat outside, but that's all the customers that came for lunch. We were brought some fresh bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, which tasted pretty good. I went with the lunch special chicken parmigiana and my brother ordered the spinach ravioli (8 pieces). Each item was $19. The chicken parmigiana was ok taste wise and and not very tender. The tomato based sauce it came with was flavorless. It also came with a disappointing over cooked penne pasta dish that had a very plain marinara sauce. The entrees are way over priced here, and the food that I tried was mediocre at best. Great place to have some authentic Italian foods. This place is very comfortable, with decent sitting. Luckily, it wasn't too busy when I visited. The service is good and attentive. I'd suggest making a reservation if you're coming in on a Friday or Saturday night, especially if you're trying to catch a movie next door afterwards. It gets pretty packed, and when the weather is on the cooler side, it tends to be where everyone wants to be. They do have a spacious patio where they have live entertainment on certain nights of the week - a huge win when the weather is warmer. For food, I went with the Carne pizza that was loaded with beef ragu, pepperoni and sausage. It was freaking huge and even with my hefty appetite, could only muster less than half into my belly. All their pies are on the larger side, so best to share and maybe get an appetizer/salad to start so you don't overdo it. Jaime's spaghetti was pretty tasty as well, so I'm excited to try their other pasta dishes on a future visit. We opted for dessert and went with the strawberry tiramisu. I'm not a huge dessert fan, but this was damn good. The strawberries were fresh (and a ton of them) and the lady fingers underneath were perfectly rich and moist. One of my most favorite Italian restaurants around -- I've come here to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, valentine's day, promotions, Mother's day...you name it. This intimate Italian restaurant located towards the AMC theater at the district, so plan to park towards the back of the theater for easy access. Also be sure to sign up for their emails as they always have some sort of promotion going off ($10 off, 15% off, etc.) From my experience it's never too busy on the weekdays but weekends can get packed, so be sure to make a reservation to be safe. They serve complimentary bread and sometimes they'll serve a delicious polenta pre-meal and a little pastry with your bill. I only ever order one dish here: Vodka penne. But substituted with spaghetti noodles. There's no need to add meat here as it just takes away from the meal. I've brought plenty of people here over the years and they all agree this is the best item on their menu. The only reason for the 4 stars is because my most recent visit (6/11) was the first time I was disappointed in my vodka penne pasta. The sauce sadly was not up to par and was tasteless. The food here is great. My friend and I came without knowing it was OC Restaurant week with the prix fix courses, so we opted for one of those and ordered separately as well. For the prix fix, we got the antipasto all'italiana (their version of a charcuterie plate), tortellacci ripieni di short rib, and a blueberry dessert. For the separate pasta, we got the spagetti alle vongole. All the dishes were fantastic and paired well with all types of alcohol. Oh, and they ended up giving us two blueberry desserts, which were the perfect amount of sweet and tart. The service was also phenomenal and they never approached us even once to hint that the restaurant was closing soon. We looked around and noticed it was getting empty so we checked the close time and realized the staff were pretty much waiting for us to finish. I remember going here a couple years ago and loving it. I had been asking my bf to go here again and we did on a Sunday afternoon. I called to make reservation around 4ish but upon arrival they didn't have my name down but it was not busy so were sat down immediately. Racist server. I went in today on a Saturday afternoon and the restaurant was empty. My party and I were sat at the table by the window that was the only one hit by the sun. I asked if we could sit at a booth, since the restaurant was empty, I was told it was reserved, which I was ok with. Once I received the food, I received I was given the wrong food order despite the gentleman repeating my order back to me. They fixed it. I was still ok with the service. However, after I received my check and paid, a non person of color couple walked in and asked if they were open. They were then prompted to sit on the booth. At that moment I realized that because I am a person of color I was not able to sit on the booth. When I arrived, it turns out I miscounted so there wasn't enough room to add more tables or chairs. The hostess was really nice about it and offered us to sit outside. I wanted to get the Bolognese but asked to switch out the rigatoni pasta for another pasta. He suggested angel hair or spaghetti so I opted for the angel hair. The prices are rather high, but the portions are big. I really liked my Bolognese because it wasn't super salty. There was a good amount of meat in the sauce too. I feel like the angel hair pasta was too delicate for the heavy meat sauce, but that's alright. I still really enjoyed it!! Since I've lived in San Diego for 6 years, I had the luxury of eating at Little Italy at the palm of my hands. Since moving back to OC, I've been on the search for the same level of quality in Italian food that I had in SD. Well, I guess I have to look no further! The entire experience was spectacular, starting from the service, to the food, and to the live music. Here's what we ordered: Crostini della Tradizione: toast topped with mozzarella, proscuitto, and butter sage. This was by far my favorite of the night. The toast was crisp, the cheese was smooth, and the proscuitto was savory and delicate. The perfect bite! Risotto Al Tartufo Nero: creamy risotto with truffle sauce and shaved black truffle. Flavorful, decadent, and classy. Tortellini Di Pollo: I was able to substitute the alfredo sauce with pesto. Amazing! Each tortellini was a nice size and shape. Chicken added a meaty taste. Since we were celebrating our 5th year anniversary, the restaurant surprised us with a complimentary panna cotta. Loved it! Not too sweet and great way to end the meal. Wasn't worth the one hour wait. We sat down ordering a bottle of wine in hopes of having a wonderful dining experience, and within the first 10-15 sitting there he said " okay can I get those main entrees in? " and repeating it multiple times before even bringing us our wine. The glasses were straight from the dishwasher and hot to the touch. The server seemed rushed and aloof, he offered bread, oil and vinegar and it never arrived until we had to ask a food runner ( who was awesome) as he was bringing our main entrees already. But ok fine they ran out of the cab and brought the prisoner red blend...which we all know is an entry point for this line. BUT the worse of it, they charged me the CAB price for the red blend, its a blend and a $40 dollar cheaper bottle....wow. Very disappointed with the pricing ethics. You know when you find an Italian place with an Italian name, you have that hopefulness that makes you think, "Please be authentic and not pathetic." Luna Rossa is surprisingly decent despite its location in south OC inside a giant shopping plaza. The feeling is cramped but I think that's intentional since they're trying to mimic the European atmosphere of "We're not as fat as you Americans are." Service has always been very friendly as well as the management which has always been present rather than passive. Hostesses though have been consistently contemptuous and I'd rather just seat myself thanks. Menu is selective but not limiting, though you won't find a novel like you would at Cheesecake Factory. *wretch* Calamari is nice and light with good seasoning in the batter. Risotto is flavorful a bit undercooked. Seafood pasta had more than tolerable levels of sand in the shellfish. Spaghetti and marinara had good depth and tasted like a warm hug, the way simple food should be. Meatballs were large (haha) and beefy (haha) but still tender (ok enough). A few other dishes I've tried but don't remember were all mostly good. I'd say the greatest think about Luna Rossa is the service and the fact that the management is very active in its participation with the floor and tables. That's always good to see. Would I come here as a regular? Probably not, but I'd be happy to default to this place for meetings and staff dinners. Note on Parking: Parking is easy if you know how to avoid the madness. Luna Rossa is located more towards the back near the movie theater. The main entrance from Barranca is horrid, so go down to Tustin Parkway then turn right then right again when you see the Petco. The atmosphere of the restaurant was nice however I could tell they were going for high end but missed the mark a bit. The menus had the pages in sheet protectors and their to go bag looked like a bag you would get from a chinese take out. My husband and I went for our anniversary and I made a reservation, however when we arrived they couldn't find our reservation and made it a bit uncomfortable at first, like we may not be able to be seated, which was a bit confusing to me considering out of the entire restaurant only about 2 tables were occupied. They apologized about it but thought that was really weird They claim to make real pasta but my lasagna was hard at the bottom, so idk if they have fresh pasta and then freeze it. But I didn't enjoy the lasagna at all the sauce tasted like tomato soup. The Margarita pizza was very delicious and would order that again. This is a updated review for Luna rossa for September 8, 2018. I will give you the pros and cons for this review. It has been 5 years since my family and I have gone back to this restaurant and my rating still has not changed it remains 3 stars. Let's start with the cons: starting with the appetizer meal. We ordered calamari now I love calamari and their calamari was horrible not seasoned at all the taste was bland. Now the next con the dessert we ordered tiramisu. I should have gotten strawberry only because I ordered the coffee flavored on and it was not that good I ordered strawberry sauce on the side and they charged $1.00. So that was the cons folks. Now for the pros the only thing good was my spaghetti carbonara I gave some to my aunt since she was not enjoying her meal. Another pro we got a 10 percent discount off our bill when you check in on yelp. And that is all for the pros. We might not be coming back to this place since we found something better sorry Luna rossa. read more

As a venue to celebrate a gf's birthday, we made rezzies in advance which scored us a nice and comfy booth perfect for our party. Our Italian server, Stefano, was personable and proved to be knowledgeable of the menu as he explained it to us in his wonderful accent. As that may be music to my ears, the live band playing was also well received as it provided the evening's background to all the chatter and laughter between my friends and I. Complimentary house bread started us off to quiet down our hunger. The duo of olive oil and balsamic vinegar for dipping is always a winner in my book so not a bad start at all. Their FRIED CALAMARI ($14) however, tasted pedestrian with its light batter that could use more seasoning. The rings and tentacles could also be sliced smaller. I wasn't a big fan of their SPAGHETTI CARBONARA either as it left a bitter aftertaste in my mouth. Perhaps some peas and more sauce? Enough complaining. On the plus side, I speak for everyone in our group when I say the TORTELLACCI ($26) was fantastic. It's pasta pockets filled with delicious wine braised beef short ribs that's uber tender, and then generously covered with Alfredo sauce - emanating a luxurious aroma that black truffle shavings can do. The moment it was set down on the table, right away I knew I picked well. SPAGHETTI alle VONGOLE ($24) was the 2nd best thing I ate that night. Not only was the pasta al dente, their version of white wine and garlic sauce with bits of parsley was solid - not to mention the abundance of clams and its subtle flavor that heightened the dish bite after bite. As far as dessert goes, PANNA COTTA was on the house for the birthday girl while an order of STRAWBERRY TIRAMISU ($8.95) was shared by all. The latter was worth a try but I prefer the original espresso flavor and would stick to that next time. I've also had better panna cotta elsewhere. That said, it's quite a mixed bag when it comes down to all the dishes that night but considering the service, the full bar, live entertainment, and overall experience, I certainly wouldn't mind making Luna Rossa my go-to for a nearby Italian fix. What a great restaurant! Luna Rossa gets Five Stars in my book! Yelper pals Kelley U and Cathy S. met here for lunch to celebrate Kelley's birthday! We all were super excited to eat here, as Kelley and Cathy constantly rave about the clam spaghetti. First, let me start off this review by giving Mr. Server Patrick a HIGH FIVE! He was one of the best and funniest servers that I've had in a long time! He made everyone feel like family and welcomed us like old friends! He anticipated our every need and gave top notch service! Management - please give Patrick a huge raise! He deserves it! For appetizers, we ordered two: The first was the cesar salad. The salad was super tasty and it had fresh sliced parmasean cheese on it. I loved the fact that it tasted a bit heavy on the anchovy side. My only minor complaint was that the romaine lettuce that they used was browning and discolored. Grade: B- The mussels was our second appetizers. Can you say YUM!? Super tender and delicious mussels served in a red sauce (wine infused). Served with two toastinis. I could have eatn the entire order by myself, but I didn't want to be an oinker. Delicious and well prepared. Highly recommended. Grade: A. For my main meal, I ordered the clam with angel hair pasta. It was an absolute visually stunning dish. Angel hair pasta tossed with white wine, tons of garlic, and tons of garlic. The dish was topped with 15+ baby clams in the shell. Visually stunning. But, I have to be honest, I wasn't impressed with the dish. The dish was very / overly garlicy (I LOVE garlic) and had little depth. It tasted like garlic-white-wine sauce to me. Despite putting fresh grated parmasean, I couldn't get myself to like the dish. The portions are very small and I was hungry, so I ate it all. I'm just glad that my other two table mates enjoyed their dishes. Grade: B- For dessert, we each ordered our own and split it. Kelley ordered the Strawberry "something" dessert (sorry, I forgot the name). It was delicious. It was like a white pudding / custard cup topped with a strawberry sauce. AMAZING! Grade: A! Perhaps I came on an off day or I ordered the wrong thing but I didn't have the same 4-5 star experience all my other fellow Yelpers have had. Polenta -- Who doesn't love free things? I enjoyed the porridge it was like I was eating sweet mashed potatoes. Enjoy it with their complimentary bread basket. My friend started dipping the bread into the polenta. Calamari -- It's really hard to do wrong with calamari. A simple dish consisting of lightly fried calamari. The portion was a slight disappointment but dip it in their sauce and all will be forgotten. Penne alla Vodka (w/ Chicken) -- Extremely oily at the bottom to the point where I barfed in my mouth a little. I was extremely displeased with the amount of chicken I got. Afterall, if I have to pay extra to add it on, I expect to have a pretty decent amount. It was as if they mashed up a cup of chicken and sprinkled it over the pasta. THE MOOD: I am pretty sure I have passed by this restaurant so many times when going to the AMC theaters here, but never really paid much attention to the place. It was only until I read the reviews that I thought this may be a spot I may want to try out and I was not steered wrong. Andrew D. and I opted for the patio seating since the weather was still nice outside and there was great ambient lighting. A very added plus was that there was a 2 man band that was playing my FAVORITE songs (Al Green - Let's Stay Together, Pharrell's Happy, Somewhere Over the Rainbow). It was just beautiful getting to unwind from our hectic week and enjoying the beautiful music and drinks. My stresses seemed to melt away and I was gently eased into my weekend with the lovely music. THE FOOD: COMPLIMENTS OF THE CHEF: We got a cornmeal dish (compliments from the chef) that came out with the bread. I'm not typically a fan of cornmeal, but was pleasantly surprised to find that it was quite tasty. CALAMARI: The calamari had a great light, crispy coating around the squid. DESSERTS: Just when we thought our meal was through, our waitress brought out shots of alcohol for Andrew D. and I. Not only that, but she brought out two little dessert puffs with powdered sugar sprinkled on top as a sweet treat - Both were complimentary. Don't mind if we do! THE 'TUDE: I loved the service here. [+1] I had a very enjoyable experience at Luna Rossa! I think our waiter made our experience. He was extremely funny and 'picked' on me all through dinner. Well, I normally get picked on during these things but it's all in good fun (: he had asked me if I wanted cheese and I said a liiiittle bit. He lightly sprinkled half a spoonful in the center...very funny..."I want more cheese!" He chuckled and gave me more (: [+1] He was very knowledgable about the food and gave us some recommendations and we agreed to some. I enjoyed the prosciutto and mozzarella appetizer... It was warm, soft, and lightly salted. Good sized too! Mm...perfect for the meal! [+1] I had the capellini con calamari entree which was lightly spiced with LOTS of calamari...it wasn't the bestest dish ever (I think I would prefer a bit more spicy) but it was still yummy and I definitely appreciated the amount of calamari they give you...very generous... I will be trying their clam dishes the next time I come here! [+1] Ok...onto the bestest bestest part of the night...the SPUMONI BOMBA...omg... I couldn't get enough of saying it and eating it...waiter recommended it and it's the best dessert if you love ice cream and pistachio flavored ice cream! It's enveloped in a delectable chocolate shell. It's amazing! I really want to go back to eat more of it... I wanna know where they get it! [-1] Onto bad... I actually do have to dock off a point because the waiter made one mistake during our dinner...we had the yelp check in discount and wanted to use it. I showed the coupon to him on my phone and he took the receipt back to change it...AND my phone... And to me that's a little unforgivable even though he did give me my phone back. It's just that I get paranoid that he's going to forget he has it and forget to return it or he'll drop it or or someone will steal it off the counter or something...@_@;; I was worried the entire time he had my phone even though I tried not to show it.. If it weren't for that I think I would have given them a 5 star. No hard feelings but it was something that stood out a bit much... [+1] Anyways it is located right next to AMC in a shopping plaza! My experience in Luna Rossa has been very nice at least when it comes to the taste of the food. The quantity is huge so I would recommend anyone who plans to order food to just order entree no appetizer unless you plan to take home the left over for next day meal. My husband ordered chicken Parmesan and I ordered penne Ala vodka. Pictures are also attached with the review in case if someone is interested in seeing how it looks. It was delicious. The only problem is that I did not quite like their service. First of all the server gave the breads and olive oil but no side plate. Then I showed the yelp discount and he redeemed it but brought the cheque with the original price. Then I had to remind him to finally get the right amount. read more

Food tasted reheated from the night before, super basic and really not great but somehow they charge $30 for a simple penne pasta. My cocktail was straight syrup on ice and undrinkable, and to top it off our server didn't come by one single time to check on our table. The food runner checked on us more than the server did, and it's not like it was busy- maybe four tables total. As for ambience, the grey plastic fold out tables underneath white sheets were tragic, and the vomit in the ladies room was really the cherry on top. We had dinner there last night with my son and his girls ; The Food was good but the server Stefano was not friendly at all. Maybe he was not having a good day . Who knows Too bad ! Our grandkids felt the same way. Not friendly at all. Three stars not for the food.. I forgot to mention He even slammed the plates. read more

What a nice way to start off my weekend. Carpaccio and an Aperol Spritz. I also had the Filet of Sole. Everything was GREAT! Good portions, great service and great patio. My two friends had a couple of the Pasta dishes and they two loved their choices. Oh! And the mini pane it's was a great ending. read more

Hands down still the best Chicken Marsala we've ever tasted. Excellent service consistent with what we've experienced in the past. Best option for pre/post movie or special occasion. read more
