I was disappointed with the only visit to this location last week. The restaurant was surprisingly busy on a Monday after 8pm. I had ordered from the vegetarian menu in previous visits to other locations and knew what I wanted even though I wasn't offered the menu. Ordering the spinach artichoke enchiladas, I was surprised that the refried beans tasted of lard. I wouldn't be surprised if the rice was made with chicken stock. When I confirmed this with the waitress, she advised I should have asked for black beans instead since the refried were default. Why should non-vegetarian dishes accompany vegetarian dishes by default? This is a matter of service training if that is the case. The wait staff needs to confirm if the often unsuspecting person is vegetarian since a lot of people do not eat meat for religious reasons. This was not an issue at the Upper Kirby location. Friend and I sat at the bar last night. There was a good, mixed crowd and solid ambiance. There are TVs to watch sports and the bartenders make great margaritas. I did want a flight as they offered but they said last night they couldn't do it because they were out of one flavor. This food was so good! They have huge portions so I'd recommend sharing unless you've got a big stomach. The only drawback is that since we were outside there were some flies. Also make sure that you don't leave any valuables in plane sight in your car when you park there!! We catered and had delivered chicken, beef, and shrimp fajitas to the nearby event space upstairs at The Coffee House at West End (801 Shepherd Dr.). I ordered Togo and waited 45 minutes. Not only did the incompetent staff provide little to no help, the Manager on duty was completely unprofessional. He stood way too close to me and made me uncomfortable. I had to go inside 3 different times and each time they told me they were "working" on my order. My order was 2 salads, tortilla soup, and poblano nachos. After waiting 45 minutes the manager finally told me that he could give me a free queso.... that was completely insulting so I just left. The staff proceeded to chase me outside and give me the chips they had forgot to put in my bag. That's the only reason they received any stars. Upon getting home (I live 2 minutes away) I realized that the food was not only cold but also wrong. Does this look like poblano nachos? Came here to visit with old HS friends. They were visiting from out of town and I wanted them to have a good Houston food experience. They were impressed with the service and food quality here. Our waiter provided good recommendations on the waffles and pancakes for brunch. Personally I got the barbacoa omelette which was nicely seasoned and the perfect amount. Our waiter was attentive of our water and coffee level the entire time. I'll be back for brunch again to finally try their waffles! read more

To say the service was horrible would be a step up. Lets try NO SERVICE while sitting at the bar for an hour. I arrived 8:35, 8:40pm on a Saturday and sat at the bar. My server, Ariana, asked me what I thought was a strange question - "will you be dining with us tonight?" After getting my answer she took my drink order and brought it. Another gentleman brought the complimentary beans, chips and salsa. That was the last of anything said to me for the next 15 minutes. The place was not busy. There were lots of empty seats, so I couldn't have gotten lost in the shuffle. I was the single black guy sitting right in front of at least 3 people who were getting stuff from all around where I sat. They even stopped to talk right in front of me. They were so close I could stick my hand out and tap them on the shoulder. All the while I still have a menu sitting in front of me. Everything about me stood out. Therefore it could only mean I was getting ignored. That's infuriating. After about 15 minutes Ariana in passing asked was everything okay. I was sitting there with an empty glass, no beans and less than half the salsa. I was hungry. I just got off work and rerouted my freeway route home to stop there. Originally I was going to get dinner and something for my lunch the follow day. That was like having 2 people order. A few minutes after Ariana came by, Joseli came to ask the same question. I told her I wanted my check. At that point I was pissed. She gave it to me at 8:55 it took her until 9:22 to, come back for the payment maybe 3 steps away, I wrote a review to the company and called, by phone, for the manager while all this was going on. The manager never came to the phone and the company hasn't responded and it is now Thursday. I did talk to a manager the following day, Johnny, who promised to send something via email. That hasn't happened. Overall, I am soured to Lupe Tortilla will head back to the competitions. A coworker recommended Lupe Tortilla. With friends like that who needs enemies. read more

Only negatives on this place is the odd parking lot and two dudes at the corner of the bar that shoved their stools out and no one could get through. (oblivious, and if annoying for passing once, can't imagine how annoying for the staff). I truly appreciated the sign at the front explaining that even if you saw an open table, because of the pandemic they might not have the staff to seat you immediately. Our server was super nice and personable. Great Tex Mex and I may embarrass myself the next time I go there. A kid at the table next to me got the chicken fingers and they looked amazing!! Salsa was nice and spicy, wish the chips had a little more salt. In addition to salsa, beans came out with pork, I'm from Chicago so this was new...I am not upset about it. I got the the Juan and all was YUMM! I am a weirdo and wished there was a little more lettuce and tomato, plus a side of sour cream. I really enjoyed my dinner here the other day. It was my first time trying this place as I usually go to papasitos. But I was actually impressed with their menu as they had a separate menu for vegetarians. Almost all Mexican restaurants do not offer such convenience. Ordering for two people easily gets you to $50, excluding appetizers and alcohol. Inflation has hit urban Tex mex harder than you could imagine, and Lupe is jacking up prices seemingly every quarter... This review has nothing to do with their food but what really upset me when it comes to card data privacy that the company is making their employees do. After me and my wife paid for our bill and received my card. We noticed that they wrote down my Card CVV number down on the bill. We ask the waiter about it and they said the company is trying to prevent future card fraud by writing down the customer's CVV on the bill and store it for later if an investigation is needed for card fraud. This practice is not ok because the restaurant and employees are liable if that information is stolen or leaked and not the company itself. So be aware if you eat here and tell the person that's serving you not to put down your card CVV number. read more

My fiancé and I come to this restaurant at least twice a month. It's been a go to spot for us forever now. We're even Lupe rewards members. We are usually patient and understanding customers but tonight's disappointing experience is worth mentioning. We checked in online as usual and got there a few minutes before getting a text message that our table was ready. We were shortly sat at the back area tables. We waited about 10 minutes before finally getting acknowledged by Doyle (our server). He took our drink orders and advised chips and salsa were coming out shortly. We did not have chips and salsa in place until almost 15 minutes after we were sat (mind you this usually comes out within 1-2 minutes of you being sat). We finally got our drinks 10 minutes after they were ordered and received our queso shortly after ordering (different server brought out the queso). We placed our usual order (1 LB Beef Fajitas) and now waited. Food came out at an adequate amount of time (about 10-15mins or so after ordering). When the food came out, we asked Doyle for limes and sour cream and advised he'll be right back. He never came back with what we requested and did not even check on how our food was anytime after. We proceeded in finishing our food (which was delicious) while we waited on our requested condiments that Doyle clearly forgot about. He came back finally about 10 mins later when we were wrapping up asking if everything was fine. We replied that aside the limes and sour cream you forgot to bring us, the food was great. Can we get the check now... Usually, we are also approached by a manager towards the end of our meal asking how our meal and experience was. Coincidentally, we were not approached this evening. We were ready to let management know our experience was unfortunate to say the least despite being regular customers. Overall, our experience this evening was not what we are used to at Lupe Tortilla on Sheperd Dr. We hope management takes these issues into account and be mindful of your customers. Please advise to Doyle to have a sense of urgency and let management on duty know to not be selective and approach all customers. Food was great, but our experience was terrible tonight. read more

First time dining at this location. Our host stand interaction was a bit awkward, we asked for a table for 3 and there was a long moment of silence before she responded at all. She said it would be a short wait so we went to go have a drink at the bar while we waited. This is where our experience was a little disappointing. The bartender asked us if we were dining or just waiting on a table, we replied just waiting on a table and he said that if guests wanted to sit there we would have to give them our seats?? Not sure if this is their policy or not but seemed very unnecessary. Not bad, but you really need to bring the goods when you're charging $14 for a couple of chicken soft tacos (served enchilada-style, and come to think of it, I'm not sure what actually qualifies these as tacos). This came close, but there was simply way too much cheese (despite my asking them to go light). Chips were good, and served with a tasty salsa and a cup of pinto beans (the latter being an unusual and welcome touch). Service was a little odd. I was referred to as "man" and "brother" a couple times too many. This is a go to spot for me when I'm craving Tex-Mex. Their beef fajitas are hands down my favorite in Houston. On this last visit, I switched it up and got the green enchiladas which were good, but the tortilla tasted a bit stale. Queso was pretty watery. I had a watermelon mint margarita and it was very fresh, not too sweet! A few downsides - parking is always limited, there are often long waits, and service is very hit or miss. Although our server was very kind, he did not check in often. My water glass was never refilled and I spent most of the meal without any. Once we were all finished eating, it took quite awhile to get boxes and the check. Hoping for a better experience next time! read more

This location is by far the best one. Love the atmosphere, food was perfect. We had Chicken and Steak Fajitas with bacon wrapped quail and it was incredible. We went about noon on a Tuesday. The place had a good amount of people but not so much that there weren't servers standing around. We got the queso to share. Since it comes in a big bowl, I tried to hail someone for a bowl to split it up since it was 5 of us around one of the large high tables. The guys near the kitchen appeared to be observing the status of the dining area but since I waved my arm for quite a while in their line of sight, they must be looking somewhere else. After talking to a waitress near the hostess desk and then our server, the bowl still never appeared. The food itself was pretty good. I decided to try the Pablo "Patron" plate. The ancho sauce on the enchiladas was yummy. The braised beef enchilada and the cheese enchilada were soft. The tamale was really delicious and soft. I liked the flavor of the masa. The ground beef taco was good. The guacamole salad was smooth guacamole on shredded iceberg lettuce. The Mexican rice was seasoned well. The refried beans were pretty good. Well, I gave this place a chance before posting but I guess they don't care about Customer Relations. A couple of weeks ago, I ordered via app a TOGO order from the Shepherd/Heights location, which was enchiladas and a margarita. I paid through the app and it was charged to my credit card. By the time I got home, the restaurant was closed and I noticed I did not get the margarita. I called the restaurant but was only able to leave a message with phone number and info. I requested that someone call me back to see how they would handle it. Credit back to my card, etc. I ALSO contacted their local Corporate offices by email. Same response. ZERO. I sent 2nd message to corporate saying I would post on Yelp if I didn't get a response. It's now been almost 3 weeks and NOTHING. I gave all receipt info on both messages of requesting a refund for the margarita and the $5 tip. NOTHING. Not ONE message or call. Every time I've ordered from this location, I've had issues with TOGO orders. I checked my card account and there still is no credit. NOT looking for FREE food. I just wanted the margarita and tip credited. I've worked in restaurants before and understand mixups. The server just handed me the bag, continued talking to other staff and didn't even check to see if it was all there. I've ordered from other locations several times and never had issues. Wait Staff (2/5): The waiter was super slow in everything. We started as a group of 3 then grew to 5. All the tables were not full, but took forever to get water, beer, chips and salsa or to put the food order in. He wasn't very attentive and kept forgetting what we ordered and the drinks came super slow. Drinks (3/5): We only ordered beer, but took forever to get them, we started ordering them way before we finish to get them on time for the next round. The prices were average for other beers, if your ordered Modelo or Dos Equis they were cheaper. Food (5/5): The food was really good, I ordered the Pepper Chicken, and my brother ordered the Poblano Chicken, they bot came with rice and beans. The chicken was perfectly tendered and cut very easily and melted in with grilled peppers and cheese. Black beans were really good as well compared to most other places. Check (4/5): The check took forever to come out because our waiter was super slow and we were beginning to run late for a show. Its average prices for Mexican dinner spot, range of $9-$15. Overall I would return to this place, and try different items on the menu with a smaller group for sure, since the waiter could not handle a table of 5, Cant blame the restaurant too much when the food was good but the service was horrible. read more

We came in here for brunch and the hostesses didn't even acknowledge us. There were several tables open in the bar and when we asked to sit there, the hostess told us that we couldn't sit there because there were no servers in that section. Not even 3 minutes later, the same hostess sat a couple in the exact table we asked to sit at. I walked to the host stand to see what was going on and the other hostess (with an attitude) told me that they were too understaffed, which is why they couldn't seat us. We watched a few other parties walk in and be completely ignored as well. Meanwhile, there were servers walking around and loitering by the host stand, not even working.
