The real entrance is a back door that looks pretty uninviting but trust me, you want to enter it. When you are inside you will be met with racks of freshly baked bread ready to go home with you. If no one is around just holler out and someone will be with you promptly. Palermo's is a commercial bakery that you can find in nearby grocery stores but why not go directly to the source and support local. We picked up a sourdough baguette, a sweet baguette, and a few sandwiches rolls. Overall, my favorite was the sourdough baguette. I can't wait to come back here and order more bread to share. *** cash only ***

Get there early or prepare to wait in line--the secret is very much out. And deservedly so. The staff is exceptionally friendly, the setting is wonderful, and somehow the food tastes even better than it looks, which is an accomplishment considering the artistry coming out of the pastry case. Alta occupies part of the historic Cooper-Molera Adobe complex, and its back garden may be one of the loveliest places I've ever eaten breakfast. Passionflowers tumble over walls and trellises, potted plants and mature trees soften the courtyard, and shade sails make it an incredibly pleasant place to linger over coffee and pastry. It feels less like café seating and more like breakfast in a particularly lovely California garden. And then there's the food. I came back two mornings in a row. The first day's quiche was ham and roasted pepper; the second was cheese and mushroom. Both were outstanding. The egg filling had this almost impossibly silky quality, with a beautifully browned top and crisp, buttery crust. I found myself deliberately slowing down because I genuinely wanted to savor every bite. The pistachio-rose swirl was exceptional: delicate, flaky layers with honey, pistachio and rose playing off one another without becoming cloyingly sweet or perfumey. It's the sort of pastry that reminds you what laminated dough is actually supposed to be. The maple-bacon swirl was the only thing that didn't quite reach the same stratospheric level. The flavor was good, but the rendered bacon fat seemed to fuse some of those beautiful layers together during baking. At most bakeries I probably still would have called it very good. Alta had simply set an absurdly high standard for itself. Then a table beside me ordered the smoked-salmon toast, I saw it arrive, and resistance became pointless. Warm, hearty, thick-cut bread topped with crème fraîche, radish, pickled red onion, greens and a genuinely generous amount of smoked salmon. A triumph. Even the pistachio-honey latte was a dream. I can't rave about Alta enough. My only complaint is that I didn't have more mornings in Monterey to work my way through the rest of the menu. It was one of the culinary highlights of the entire trip and is now my benchmark for what an excellent bakery can be. Alta, you have ruined lesser bakeries for me. Five stars. No notes. Except: make more pastries. I have unfinished business.

Donut holes were solid as well, simple, fresh, and satisfying. Overall, everything tasted fresh and high quality. Service was fast, and the baker was super friendly, hooked it up with extra donuts, which made the experience even better. The vibe was welcoming, and it's definitely a spot worth checking out. Lupita's Bakery is hands down the best spot for breakfast burritos! We waited around 10-15 minutes but we didn't mind since we knew it'd be fresh. I got the egg, bacon, cheese, and potato breakfast burrito, and my boyfriend got the Chilaquiles breakfast burrito--both were absolutely amazing! The flavors were spot on, and every bite was so satisfying! The staff was incredibly kind and welcoming--when we asked for recommendations, they took the time to share their personal favorites and best sellers. We ended up trying some sort of Mexican cream cheese swirl based on their suggestion, and wow, it did not disappoint! Perfect with hot coffee. If you're looking for amazing food and friendly service, Lupita's Bakery is the place to go. 10/10 recommend! We'll definitely be coming back. read more

Really enjoyed my torta! They pressed it on a panini grill! I ordered milanesa (breaded pork) and added oaxacan cheese. The chipotle mayo that they add is so good. Would highly recommend. The staff was super friendly and gave me exactly what I ordered. I also enjoyed the tamales and the freshly squeezed orange juice! The bread is also no doubt the best sweet Mexican bread I've had. Super fresh! It comes out hot and fresh every day around 6pm if you get there on time before it runs out! read more

Lupitas Bakery was the only place that would bake a champagne cake at a great price. The champagne cake came out very delicious and nice! It took a week and a half and we were satisfied we would purchase cakes from there again! The cake was amazing, the employees were helpful. Overall 5 stars well deserved! read more
