No for ongoing system maintenance (1 to 2 stars.) *** DETAIL We have had an excellent experience (5 stars) with the owner, Marlon Pujol, for system design and installation. He is an expert on ductwork, zones and energy efficiency. Maintenance is another story entirely. Sadly, I'd rate maintenance service at MP Energy 2 stars at best and 1 star on other occasions. The technicians are adequate for straightforward problems, but may misdiagnose more complex issues, as they did in the case of our system. After 3 winter weeks during which our heating has recycled on and off without a fix, we've given up on MP Energy. We're now in the process of consulting other companies, and it appears that MP Energy may have misdiagnosed our problem. In general, we've found that the MP Energy maintenance are like a mediocre computer help desk: they fix the simplest issue and leave. If that's the sum of the problem, all well and good. But if there's something more going on, repeat visits (and fees) will be required. Getting it right the first time is not MP Energy's strength when it comes to maintenance. read more

MP Energy Services in Silver Spring, MD saved the day for us. Here we are in the midst of a tropical heat wave (upper 90s/high humidity) when the AC compressor quit. We subscribe to the Washington Consumer Checkbook publication and they are listed with check-marks for Quality and Price. They certainly lived up to the top review given them. We called at 7:45a and they had the compressor up and running at 10:15a. A great relief, especially because it was a VERY busy time for them in this weather. Caveat: (Would be remiss if this wasn't noted.) Received invoice and labor cost was reasonable, BUT, the one part installed had a 1,000% markup. $150 for a $15 item. But the total bill was just $45 more than anticipated and the response was excellent. read more

You, like me.. who is older and has been living in a DC townhouse for 5+ years now, said... you know what... these dang places have no central air... and on top of that hmm gee... go figure summer sure is hot as hell!!! I think I need to do something about this... Now I am older than you... nope probably not that cool anymore (like I care).. but probably filled with more wisdom than yourself... let me tell you something about what you need to do to get rid of those ugly inefficient window units in your rowhouse. Call Marlon. Now seriously I am cool and was probably even more cool back in younger days, but I got it down so listen up... MP Energy seems to specialise in retrofitting old DC rowhouses with really good HVAC systems. This was a big project of course, and like anything you have to do other things to your house first.. you mr. cool hipster, throw insulation in your attic and redo your windows, cause if you own a middle row house like me chances are.... yup... you gonna have to do it... Never mind that f'd up wiring done by some uncle from the 40s who said, dang if I am gonna do this myself code or no code! Oh boy look at what you bought now huh?? But you know you love it!! We called several HVAC places about putting units in and it was just like many other reviewers here... all over the map. What was worse were some of the things they said they had to do and couldn't do such as... Smash a giant hole in my bedroom ceiling to get the unit in the attic... another who said we had to run giant ducts through the house that would be visible and of course ugly as all get out... what??? I'll say pass!!! Marlon said... nope... none of that... After looking over our house and choosing his carrier system he said my staff (who compromise of REALLY SMALL GUYS WHO CAN CRAWL INTO JUST ABOUT ANYTHING) can do this this this, and you won't even see anything.. And guess what... they did it.. I don't have ugly ducts, I have a cool house, I got a cool system, and you couldn't even tell I have central air. If you own and old townhouse in DC that was built probably in the 20-30 maybe even in the 40s, this is the only person you should deal with. I was quite impressed, with that said I'll actually remove one star for the following reasons but I will not say these are major deal breakers. a) sometimes the staff would show up late for work to start causing me to stay home until I could leave for work b) getting your calls returned was sometimes hard, however following up though even on the same day you could get a hold of Lori who was always pleasant and encouraging and would then get back to you. That said for the situation I am in there is nobody else I would even deal with, but you know what go out and get some other quotes it will prove it themselves. My heat wasn't working right in Fall 2016, so t had them come out based on a recommendation by someone on my neighborhood listerv. The technician spent a few minutes to find out that there were leaves blocking a pipe (?) that takes in outside air for the unit. He told me to buy something (I'm not sure what or where to get it) that would keep the leaves from getting into the outdoor pipe. I don't even know where outside this thing is, but it is under my (very low) deck. I cannot physically crawl under my deck. He didn't have the part. He charged me $95 just to come out and left without fixing anything. I guess I was too stupid to insist he do something right then or measure it for size of thinga-majig or write down the name of it and where to get the part. Good customer service would have been to do all that or even mail me the part (I would gladly pay for it.) A few days ago my A/C quit. I thought it might be the same thing. I asked if they had any kind of discount because they had already come out for something similar a few months ago. No they don't. She also said they don't usually carry those parts on the truck. They had to come out and diagnose my A/C (for another hundred bucks?!). She said she could get a technician to call me first thing in the morning at 8:00 am. i said ok. No one EVER called me back. We hired MP Energy Services to install central air in our new 1925 bungalow. As you may know (but I didn't really), installing ductwork in old houses that don't have any is a big task! Marlon was the first person we had out to give us an estimate. He and his team specialize in AC systems for old houses. He had a very clear understanding of the challenges of fitting ductwork into our tiny bungalow, and a clear, non-invasive plan to make it work. He also told us that other companies would give us significantly higher quotes, because they weren't familiar with this kind of job and wanted to hedge their bets. I didn't believe him, but he was totally right. MP's quote was several thousand dollars less than any of the other guys we had out. The other companies also had all kinds of crazy schemes involving moving doorways, cutting apart walls, converting closets (of which we have basically none) into AC stuff.... it sounded like such a mess, and they clearly weren't very comfortable working in the oddly sized spaces available in our house. I can't think of the last time the company I liked the best, with the best reviews, ALSO had the best price, but that's what we got with MP. MP did our install last week, and it went great, exactly according to plan. How do they manage to fit systems in spaces the other companies said were impossible? It turns out every morning our crew built custom-sized ductwork in their shop to fit the spaces in our house. New system is up and running, I love it, and I still have all my closets/doorways/walls. When we bought our house in NW DC we asked 4 contractors to quote putting in an AC system (the house was relying on window units). Marlon impressed us by his expertise. He recommended putting 2 systems to control 2 floors each (finished basement/main floor + second floor/finished attic) to offer flexibility and allow him to use walls and ceilings/floors to run pipes in a non-invasive way (it made sense: if you need to run pipes through 3 floors you need bigger pipes). We chose his solution because he seemed very comfortable with the solution he was recommending, he seemed technically top-notch and he quoted competitively. 4 months later we're still very satisfied with his system and his after-sales service is on par with the rest. Marlon and his crew did a great job retrofit-installing central AC in our 1912 DC rowhouse. Marlon was a pleasure to deal with, straightforward and honest. It was amazing how well they cleaned up after themselves after each day of work - you could almost not even tell they were working. Update: After working out the initial problems in our 1st year of owning the system we haven't had any issues since. All but one of the problems was due to a difficult install. We replaced both our furnace and air conditioner in our house in November 2010. We got estimates from a number of highly recommended companies who sent out their salesmen. The range of models, sizing and pricing was dizzzying. The more estimates we got , the more confused we became. Marlon was the only person who actually understood the technical specs of the systems he recommended. Additionally, his pricing was surprisingly low. The installation was superb; exactly when expected. The furnace has been great; so quiet it's hard to believe it's running. We finally had to turn on the AC. Again--we're delighted. Last Friday my A/C condenser decided it was time to get grumpy and quite doing its job during this 80+ degree weather. I dug into my paperwork and found the original installer of the equipment, M P Energy Services, and found that some of the parts were still under warranty from years ago. I had a friend of mine call them up and chat about it*, and they had no problems working with me through my friend as a proxy. I received a follow-up email to boot, checking with me about my communication preferences, which was fantastic (thanks Jennifer!). David came out this morning, diagnosed the problem in under five minutes, swapped out the bad part (the capacitor had blown, and he had a replacement in the van), and went ahead and checked the coolant pressure and temperatures just to be sure that was the only thing that borked. He let me know what he was doing every step of the way, was courteous, and quite thorough. Before leaving he explained about the new warranties on the part and his labor, and said to have no qualms about calling him back if everything wasn't A-OK. Obviously, I'm quite pleased with the work, costs were right as expected, and I'd have no doubts calling David back for additional HVAC help. The poorest on site service of any company providing any service EVER! Installation was not done to specifications and 1/2 duct work had to be replaced. HVAC coil fails in 18 mos. doing the warranty work has a new huge coil sitting on our front porch for ten days! Then ONE GUY shows up to install what turns out to be a damaged coil! When I called office and spoke with Lindsay (the ONLY GOOD THING about MP Energy to speak with owner he won't answer call and we have to wait another ten days with coil on front porch to have it removed. In subsequent phone calls he is belligerent and rude stating all coils are damaged "like that" and lies to me stating three had been delivered to his shop in last six weeks all looking the same. I called a buddy at IN distribution for Carrier and he confirmed NO coils had been shipped to MP! I then called CroppMetcalf- they came to house the next day confirmed bad coil and were back in TWO days!! During the speedy installation we THEN DISCOVERED MP ENERGY WAS NOT ONLY RUDE BUT SHADY AS WELL! They had failed to fill out any paperwork AND had wired our HVAC unit the WRONG WAY! This led to a complete inspection of the total installation. A short list of substandard work follows - failure to tape seals properly - failure to place vents balanced within the home -when installing ductwork in a crawl space (almost 1/2 the house) they removed insulation for the floor AND DID NOT PUT IT BACK JUST THREW IT AWAY!! Now I know why kitchen, dinning and living rooms are like an icebox every morning! We will now have to spend over $1000 to fix - months into ownership the humidifier for our unit failed. MP replace under warranty (we still had to pay labor) we were told "eh this happens " the new unit was not installed to spec and further was put up with most of the silicon caulking used to seal unit to the duct and WAS NOT replaced!! - saddle valve was used for the water supply to humidifier! Specs state "NEVER" use a saddle valve!! *The humidifier still is not working *Horrible and damaging technical abilities Failure to complete required paperwork *Very bad on site service *Owner lies to clients Refuses to honor contract! A wonderful, local service provider that I'm happy to recommend. Jose came to do some maintenance work on the central air conditioning unit in my apartment this morning. The service was quick, affordable, and friendly. I waited too many years to have this done. For under $200, helped me avoid the nightmare that would have resulted if he didn't clear out the catch that was almost completely clogged with dirt. This saved me lots of money and the improved efficiency of my unit will reduce my electric bill every month! read more

I talked with 3 other contractors in regards to HVAC duct work, and none of them compare to M.P. Energy Services. As first-time home owners, we were afraid of being taken advantage of since we have no experience with these types of issues. Marlon took extra time and care in educating us about our house. MP Energy Services did an amazing job. We needed a new heating and air conditioning system. I wanted a zoned system and several other companies said it could not be done. They mostly gave us quotes to replace the current system. Marlon from M.P. looked at our house and said with a little new ductwork in our laundry room and a few new vents we could have a four-zone system in our two-story townhouse. The work was not cheap and we could not get a comparable estimate, so we have no idea if we overpaid. The workers were meticulous in the work and the cleanup. It turned out to be a very tricky job and required great skill. My only concern is that nobody came out to review the work, explain the system, and do the paperwork for the rebate until I called and threatened a bad review. Then Marlon came out, reviewed the work, and found three things that needed to be fixed. I still don't know if he would have done this had I not called and complained. If you want to do something other than replace the current system, you need someone like Marlon and MP Energy. read more

I have using MP Energy Services since 2012 when they installed a new hot water heater and replaced the coils on my central AC unit. Since then I have been using the company for Spring and Fall inspections of my heat and AC units. This year the technician David came to my house to inspect the AC system on April 14, 2017. Upon checking the outside AC unit he said it was not working. He said one of the fuses was burned out and sent me to a near by Home Depot for a replacement. I got 1 block from the house and he called me on my cell and told me to come back because the compressor was bad. He recommended a replacement of the AC and also the furnace because it was too old (1996). Marlon Pujol, the owner, came the following day and recommended several efficiency options for replacing both the AC unit and the furnace which he said was in good shape for its age. I contacted several heating and AC companies for estimates for the work Marlon recommended. The first company came by and replaced the fuse that was bad. The AC unit started right up and sounded quiet in its operation. They asked me if I wanted to have them evaluate the AC unit and I agreed. The unit was cooling fine and the temperature of the cooling line was perfect. They recommended using the system until it no longer works. I have been using the system in 85 degree temps and the house is perfectly comfortable. I called Marlon and he hypothesized the technician's meter was defective. It's possible. read more

I am not a big review writer but this company and owner (Marlon) was amazing. I had him and his guys install the latest infinity line from Carrier which allows me to control from an app and installs the AC on the roof (no crane required). I also had him swap out my hot water heater and add addition ducts. He had also worked on (2) of my friends houses a block away and both couldn't have been happier with the finished product and service; the man is a genius. I obtained quotes from (3) other companies (Angie's, Michael and Sons & Magnolia) all of which were $8,000+ more than his quote and didn't know what the newest Infinity system was by Carrier..... His warrantee is also above all others. I trusted MP Energy enough to give him the code to my house and let his guys work unsupervised as they please which usually was from 10-6/7pm. So far, this was by far the easiest transaction of my home remodel. I cannot say enough about Marlon, his crew and the office executive assistant Ashley. After so many phone calls to find out what's going on and leaving few messages to the office voicemail and talking to the receptionist he called back with no apology. He gave me his quote over the phone. After few days when I called him back to see if we can negotiate, he never called back after leaving message to his receptionist. Not professional. Well it has been almost one year since MP installed three complete HVAC systems in my house/apartment building. They are performing well. I am posting this to put it out there that MP knows their business inside and out. I am an engineer and was worried about my installation because of the extreme space limitations imposed by the job. 8 years of hell -- MP Energy installed 3 Carrier units at our newly constructed home in 2006 in Potomac and as of last month, April 2014, he nor any of his service people have been able to remotely repair the heating/cooling units. Each winter, the units go down once the temps reach freezing. We averaged multiple service calls each month for each winter since 2006. Units are constantly on auxillary heat costing many extra PEPCO $'s each mo. as well as countless service calls that resulted in MP being paid for guess work and/or band aid remedies - profitable for MP however. Unit/s through April 2014 still showed the message 'system malfunction - call tech' - Each and every winter all winter long. I notified BBB recently and now after years of abuse, I hired an industry expert (who teaches at local union shops in this exact line of work) to view my situation and in less than 2 hours, this pro discovered the discrepancies below: That would equate to 2 hours vs. 8 winters of hell!! On a good note, MP's first contact person, Jennifer, is the only good thing about MP - helpful, understanding and diligent. Once a rational person views the below results from this 2 hr. visit, it was easy to conclude that MP wasted thousands of my dollars since 2006 from 'repeat' service calls that were heavily based on 'guessing' versus really knowing the business and solving a problem - actually simple problems. "I ask the consultant in April to begin where MP left off, that is, the master bedroom with the usual and consistent multiple year history of 'system malfunction - call technician' messages on the monitor. Many discrepancies were found on this unit as well as the other two: - The copper wiring that MP installed in the units are viewed as too small and therefore that 1 1/8" suction line and 1/2" liquid line were more suitable for the length of the run. - The suction line was also intermixed with 7/8" and 1 1/8" copper that was restricting the refrigerant flow. - The refrigerant in the line was also contaminated. It appeared that the wrong type refrigerant was used, or 2 different types were mixed and or an acid issue. - The outdoor sensor and defrost sensor were switched incorrectly -- he said that this was probably done by the factory. (No one noticed this since 2006??) - All 3 unit's piping is too small for the length of the run. - All 3 units have the wrong communication wire which should be P. rated twisted and stranded wire for the length of the runs. - And my personal favorite - - All 3 unit's (including the new one) thermostats were in the wrong location!! Other than that, MP was doing a great job!!! I have countless emails and work orders noting numerous refrigerant changes, communication errors, thermostat and sensor issues, etc., all of which relate directly to the above notations." It's no one's fault but my own for staying so long w/MP but I recommend to anyone using MP Energy to service their heating/cooling units to allow no more than a single return service call -- go elsewhere or call someone that knows how to properly install and repair Carrier units. Everything is good now but be beware of your first issue if MP is serving your home -- the owner, Marlon P. refused to visit my home nor meet with me to help resolve a single issue a single time - not even once after 8 years of hell. read more
