I really wanted to like this joint as it seems to have an interesting concept (Halal fried chicken) and be a small business. But alas, life does not take requests. The restaurant itself is fairly non-descript and you might not notice it very easily. On my recent visit, I went inside and attempted to order before being directed to order on what was basically an iPad. It was prime lunch hour 12-1 PM and the place was virtually abandoned other than one staff member and presumably someone in the kitchen. I wanted to order a chicken wrap, but the menu kiosk indicated that they were out of stock. This was a bit unclear given the total lack of customers, but I ended up ordering a sandwich, which is more or less the only other item offered other than wings. Another customer also wanted a wrap, and actually left when he asked and was told it was not available. As I mentioned, the restaurant is less than spacious so after ordering you basically have to stand about awkwardly (and for quite a while) for your order to be ready. As for the food, it was average at best. I will say that it smelled appetizing (and my coworkers even said as much) and it seemed well breaded but overall, it wasn't the most flavorful. The fries were average. If they address the food quality, inventory, staffing, and speed of service, it would be strongly beneficial. read more

This place is not ready for prime time. The interior looks half finished and on a Saturday at lunch time, there was only one person working. There is no pick up area so if you order take out you have to wait for the one person to appear. He then only helps one person at a time so you have to continue to wait. My food happened to already be done, sitting behind the counter but it didn't have a label so I had no idea. When I got it, it was completely drenched and soggy bc the plastic bag had been tied shut. The food was pretty good though after I put it in the toaster oven to reheat. The photos in Uber Eats are incorrect, though. If you order tenders or nuggets, the photos include fries which you will not get. The chicken was not bad, but you can get much better at other places... I am taken aback by the quality and standard they deemed food. The service was a tad slow, but that was to be expected as it was lunch time and the front counter employee was very nice and helpful. But the food was terrible and nothing but salt. The fries were soggy, salty, and oily. The chicken tenders were the size and width of my index finger. I was very disappointed as I was looking forward to trying them after weeks of waiting. I'm giving it two stars, as it wasn't completely inedible. But this is not a place i'd come back to. The biggest red flag I wish I read more clearly was the AI photos of the food. If your food is delicious, why fake it? Came here regardless. Ordered the chicken strips and fries combo with a dipping sauce. Order took way longer than I expected to wait. About 25-30 minutes was the wait time. Still was a bit lenient because I was expecting a great piece of chicken and fries combo. Was not worth it at all. I don't remember the dipping sauce that I got, either ranch or some special sauce, but it was awful. It had the texture and look of clear glitter glue and clearly came from a large container. Wasnt even dippable with either the fries or the chicken thus defeating the purpose of a "dipping" sauce. Fries were way too heavy on salt and were so soggy. Tasted almost like a napkin dipped in the Pacific Ocean. Even shaking the fries wasn't enough to remove the copious amount of salt. Was possibly the only edible thing I was able to eat. Chicken seasoning was good I will admit. Very excellent spice levels and great aroma. Was excited to bite in. Once I tasted the chicken, it felt off. It gave a smell of rancidness that sounded alarm bells in my head. I understand it's halal chicken, but it shouldn't smell this off even for me. Took two bites and avoided eating all three of my tenders. Not a pleasant experience at all. Even the recollection of this experience gives me nightmares. I stopped in a little before noon. The restaurant looked partially renovated or not fully set up yet, so I asked the employee if they were open--he said yes. When I tried to order, he told me to use the touchpad instead. No problem. I ordered a chicken tender combo (with sweet chili) with fries and drink (water), and added a side of their "Maa's Sauce" for a dollar. Prices were standard. Issue #1: The chef came out to say their delivery hadn't arrived and the only beverage available was canned Coke. I'm avoiding caffeine, but I accepted it and moved on. Not a huge deal. Issue #2: When my food arrived, none of the sauces I paid for were included. Instead of sweet chili and Maa's sauce, I was given BBQ and honey mustard. When I asked about it, the chef said they couldn't make Maa's sauce because the delivery hadn't come in--information that was never shared before I paid. At this point, I was frustrated. If the employee had just taken my order or told me up front what wasn't available, none of this would have been an issue. I commented that they shouldn't sell items they don't have in stock. What happened next was unacceptable. The chef came out yelling, insisting he had "told me" about the delivery issue (but only after I had paid). He accused me of criticizing him personally when my comment was clearly about the business practice, not him. The interaction escalated to the point where I chose to leave rather than eat while being berated. Food: Chicken was average; fries tasted like basic freezer fries. Store: Looked messy and unprepared. Service: Shockingly unprofessional. Save yourself the trouble and go to Roaming Rooster, Shake Shack, or even Popeyes instead. read more

Whatever DJ is getting paid, it ain't enough! that man deserves a raise, he was so incredibly kind. The breading on the tenders was almost like chicken katsu which was delicious, i will say the spice levels are low so maybe go a little higher than what you normally would. I was on a work trip in the area and was walking past Maa's Chicken when this kind gentleman, Quentin, offered me and my friend a sample of their chicken. I picked the house sauce to dip. Once I put that crispy good chicken smothered with sauce in my mouth I was in heaven. Boy, was I lifted by the lord above. Unfortunately, my friend and I were headed to a work conference and couldn't indulge at that moment. We said, "We'll be back later, and we'll bring the whole group!" We went about our day, but that chicken never left my mind. We convince our group that Maa's Chicken was the perfect choice for dinner so after the day was over, we headed that way. As soon as we walked in we were engulfed by the smell and aroma of perfection. Something so magical you can't make it up. Quentin was still working and recognized us, making the experience that much more enjoyable. I went to the order kiosk and browsed, picking the Maa's Signature Chicken Combo. As we waited, we conversated with Quentin were he told us about the owner, how he started out in cooking, and other food recommendations. There was also another fellow customer ordering food, and I enjoyed a conversation with him as well, he even took our picture! I will forever be grateful for the night of 10/17/25 when I was standing in the middle of Maa's Chicken conversating with Quentin, laughing with friends, getting my picture taken. You know I'm not a fan of the big city because not many people tend to be friendly. Maa's Chicken changed my world. The people were amazing! I never caught the name of the gentleman in the back cooking for us, but he did a wonderful job as well. He definitely deserves a mention. By far the best fried chicken sandwich in DC it was spicy, it had flavor. Even the French fries felt like they were fresh and cut to order, so the food itself was amazing. When it comes to service. There's no better guy than the guy who served me. I had no parking, so I randomly parked somewhere. The guy came out and said, "Hey man, don't park there. They'll give you like a $2000 ticket because it's DC so just park by the parking lot area, put your hazards on, and I'll come to you." So I did what he said, and then I went in to pick up my food, and he's like, " I'm sorry man, I got busy, but here you go." And I threw in some extra fries for you. At that amount of service, I have yet to see in DC the ambience is great. I'm a fan of hot chicken sandwiches so was excited to see this place open up near my office. Unfortunately, the Maas signature sandwich combo i ordered disappointed across the board. First, the order took about 40 mins from when I ordered to when I got the text saying it was ready - way too long given that this place is set up for takeout. Second, the fries were too salty, though they had a decent texture. Comparable to McDonald's (but saltier). Third, I could forgive the fries, but the sandwich was really subpar. When I get a hot chicken sandwich, I expect a substantial chicken breast that extends out beyond the bun, with quality breading and the inside still juicy and tender, much like the photo on the website depicts. Instead the patty was a dense piece of chicken breast smaller than the bun, covered in small gritty breadcrumbs. It wasn't totally dry, but a far cry from the plump, juicy, bursting-with-flavor chicken I've come to expect from places like this (and at comparable price points). The sauce also was not ad advertised - instead of whatever their special sauce is, it was a thin relatively flavorless buttermilk ranch. The pickles were decent though. read more

There are so many things wrong with this place and the red flags are all there. They were closed for months for health violations like poor lighting, flaking paint in cooking areas, inadequate water pressure, etc. But then their Instagram stated they were re-opening on a specific day. My coworkers and I were excited to try it out but when we went, it was still closed. Then it was nothing for months. No update on social media. No sign outside explaining anything. Just a dark store filled with random construction stuff. When they finally opened, the disappointment cannot be understated. The first red flag is all the AI-generated images for their menu and advertisements. Not only should that be concerning but it's also misleading because the actual style of fried chicken is not like the images. The images make the chicken seem like southern style buttermilk flour crust fried chicken. Maa's is more like burnt panko breaded chicken like an Italian chicken parm. The chicken fingers my coworkers got were super dry and salty. I went a few weeks later and it was a little better but not by much. The fries are clearly an afterthought. Probably a frozen bag they get from somewhere else then just re fry and douse in salt. By the time you start eating, the fries are completely limp. The sandwiches are a fraud too. Again, the menu images make it seem like you'll get a big fat chicken thigh or pounded breast as the patty. Nope. Just two chicken fingers shoved into the sandwich. The bread was decent though. Other issues: No air conditioning so it was super hot inside. The yellow boxes are the cheapest paper material I've ever seen. Unless you open the box right then and there and eat it right away, it will get soggy and crumble in minutes. The shop itself is messy with construction equipment all over the floor and back kitchen area. They dont have any kind of labeling system for the boxes so when they messed up my order amongst a bunch of other orders, they had to open every box to check what was in it. A simple sticker system would make things so much easier. Also, it wasn't fast at all. Waited over 35 minutes for just an order of 3 tenders and a sandwich and there was only two other customers in the store. The staff were clearly disorganized and ill-equipped to handle even a minor rush of orders. The whole place gives "money laundering" vibes. They also had signs saying "give us a 5 star review for a free tender" which is no doubt what's motivating a lot of the 5 star reviews on here. The fact that Washington city paper named this the best fried chicken over places like Honeymoon, Doro, and Roaming Rooster is laughable and probably a result of some kind of bribe for free tenders to the writer. Avoid this place at all costs because there are so many better fried chicken spots in this city. read more
