What a joy! From the moment I tasted the canchita I knew I had made the right decision! We started with the avocado salad, which was fresh, crisp and super tasty - iceberg lettuce with sliced tomatoes and radishes and a yummy dressing made this a great starters on our meal. We then tried the soup of the day which was a chickpea and chicken concoction that reminded me of having dinner at my friend's house - home-made deliciousness! We then tried the papas a la huaincaina, which were heavenly cheesy and shared the 'personal' jalea (trust me, it's enough for two!). Jalea was a freshly fried seafood platter with just the right amount of variety and the flavor was fantastic. Excellent place for Peruvian. When we walked in the place was empty, but in minutes half the tables were taken, on a sat afternoon. Parking isn't great here. Both service and food was great. Place is fresh and clean and evidently new. Ordered the tamale and the bistec pobre to split along with a side of beans. It was enough for two. Pricing was ok. Food quality was good. Good food slow service and annoyed that I showed the waitress the Yelp check in for a free dessert it still came on the bill and then the owner told me that it was only Monday to Friday, but no where is that explicit. Came here today for their lunch special, food was good I definitely enjoyed it. The reason this place gets a 2 stars is for their service. Let me start by saying we were the only people seated the place was completely empty. We ordered our food everything was fine then another couple enter and ordered. The other couple got Canchita and their drink in a glass with ice, we had no Canchita and our soda handed to us with a straw. My friends and I had decided to visit this restaurant since the other Peruvian restaurant on the same block had too long of a wait. The food was actually pretty good but the service on the other hand was very sub par. The waitress had missed two dishes from our order and when we had asked about the status of those dishes mid meal, she promised those dishes - only to have us wait another 30-40 minutes... It was very disorganized - our dinner was 2 1/2 hours because of all the waiting around for all our orders to come out. The cherry on top was that they had tacked on a 20% service charge to our bill for a 5 person party - without notice...not happy about that. read more

Coming in from Manhattan, we GPS'ed the route to 2 "similar" restaurants near Maca. Once we arrived there, both were a disaster. We then accidentally found Maca. What a find! Delicious sangrias (red and white) tasty chicken, sides (arroz con frijoles, maduros, sliced avocado) were delicious and arrived quickly. But just as wonderful as the food was the friendly, professional waitstaff. Each dish was fresh and served piping hot. The prices were also very reasonable, and all debit and credit cards are accepted. I don't know how those other restaurants exist in the same neighborhood as Maca. Celebration turned to a rip-off situation. We were a party of 8 who had a reservation, seated with no problem. Service was acceptable, paid the bill with a nice tip and left. After reviewing the bill the next day I see 3 $20= 60 to open a wine botrle charge. This restuarant is bring your own bottle and no where does it say they charge to open the bottles. Not on the menu nor anywhere in the restuarant. Well they are not done yet... they also charged us 3 pitchers of Chicha that we didnt or nor served that equaled $27. I can see one error on the bill but this is six different charges that equal almost $100. Went back to the restuarant and asked to speak to the manager. He was not there so I asked to speak to the person who was in charge. Spoke to a person that I believe was the son of the manager. He stated he was in charge but when I told him about the situation he wasn't able to help me. When I asked him when the manager would return he stated he didn't know in a non-caring way. Very disappointed... I have learned the hard way.. Forgot to add ..was told that we hsd to give up our table for their next reservation. Even though the restaurant was rated a B, we chose it over Pio Pio because my son wanted a more varied menu than Pio Pio offers. Everything looked clean to me but, as see a review below talks about them reusing table items, now I wonder if it should be rated lower than a B! We did have dinner here and we did not get ill though . My son enjoyed his food, Peruvian fried rice with chicken. I had a chicken combo for one (which was not on the menu; they only had it with a whole chicken during dinner time). The rice was okay, the beans were very "soupy," and the chicken was dry. The salad was okay. The main reason I won't go back again is because the waitress spoke not a word of English. Yes, it'a a Peruvian restaurant but it's in Queens, NY and my Spanish is pretty rusty. We had to order by pointing at pictures on the menu. The waitress left the table, seemingly to get us help. I thought that she'd come back with someone who could speak English but she didn't. She was able to communicate the answer in Spanish and did get the order right, but I felt hampered by the lack of communication. For example, I did not want dark meat but I didn't know how to say that and I was served dark meat, rather than the breast which I would have preferred. Sorry, but I think that minimally the workers who interact with customers should be bilingual. read more

After a long day of walking, looking for good spots to eat in NYC, trying new places and dishes and not being completely satisfied with any, we decided to hit a spot we knew wouldn't disappoint and i am glad we were right. Maca Restaurant is an extremely poor example of what a Peruvian restaurant should be. The quality of the food well below minimum standards. The portions are exceedingly small, and the prices are ridiculous. We ordered a delivery of Lomo saltado and ended up paying $22+ tip, $25 in total. I felt like I have been just robbed and hopeless at the same time. That was the first and last time I called Maca. Now I am trying this new place on Metropolitan Av called Kantu. DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT!!! order the empanadas. I had the beef empanadas and as soon as I saw them I started doubting them. The dough is not authentic, it seems like they deep fried them when in reality you are suppose to bake them. The filing was awful to say the least. The consistency reminded me of a soup, it had potatoes which I've never seen in the traditional empanadas. Moreover, it taste like it was frozen bc some parts were cold after they heat it up (they couldn't even do that right -__-), and it tasted like the meat was going bad. Reviews are everything especially during a time like this. I am a returning customer, I really enjoy the food. I am all about supporting local businesses. But give the business to the workers who appreciate you and care about the quality of their food and service. What makes a place five stars is the service. The quality in this place is horrible. No one speaks English for starters, than they double charge me on my debit card stating it comes up "error". I have to repeat myself five times when I call up. As I had to go in to speak to the owner, he had shown no care in the world. I had to call there credit card company and have a case opened with them. That "error" ended up officially taking out 70 dollars out of my card. Do you think the owner ever apologized or called me when they saw an additional 70 dollars PLUS the cash I had to pay for my food? No. It's not like they were busy, I was the only one in there. They even got my food order wrong, forgetting stuff but ofcourse charged me. Absolutely horrible, they will not be getting any business from me. read more

Really Delish Peruvian Food. I passed by this new spot on my way home from picking up takeout at Pio Pio which is a few doors down. I grabbed the menu and perused it when I got home wanting to kick myself for not going here first! I quickly remedied this by ordering from here a few days later and can happily state that it is my new favorite local restaurant. I ordered the pollo saltado which is my favorite Peruvian dish and it was absolutely delicious! I complimented this with the avocado salad (ensalada de palta) and both portions were so generous I had enough for another meal the next day. If there's a Peruvian restaurant within five miles of mi casa, you better bet your ass I'm gonna be there. Now I know this is a new restaurant so obviously you need to temper your expectations a bit. I got the empanadas and the rotisserie chicken. The rotisserie chicken was good, and I loved the green sauce that it came with. Not the best I've had but definitely one of the better ones. The empanadas came with an even more delicious spicy sauce. I also loved the waitress, I didn't even know her name but she was awesome! This has got to be by far my favorite restaurant in Queens period. Went on Saturday Aug.17, for the first time and from the moment I walked thru their doors I felt welcome. The staff were extremely nice and the the server was super accommodating. I wanted yuca a la huancaina which wasn't on the menu and she assured me the chef can accommodate and boy did he ever. I also ordered choclo con queso and this is the first Peruvian restaurant that actually takes the time to serve it in a lil bowl as oppose to the actual full head of corn. The green picante was yummy. I ordered the macho pobre, I believe that was it, it was similar to picante de mariscos which they don't serve, but they certainly didn't disappoint! They serve alcoholic beverages but I didn't indulge but what I did do a bit of was sing seeing as, and unbeknownst to me, it was karaoke night! The owner (the Mrs.) actually comes to your table and introduces herself to new customers; she was a lovely and warm person and gave me the courage to go up and sing; not once, but twice! Lol.. Overall a must go to spot if in the area and in the mood for great Peruvian food. I have absolutely not one complaint, and for me, that's a rarity! read more
