Two and half stars because they were average. Prices reasonable but food just Meh, not great. The bread was very good. My husband has the osso buco and was very disappointed as there was no large shank and no marrow (isn't the marrow what makes the osso buco?) I ordered a Mediterranean pasta dish with olives, artichokes, tomatoes and spinach. Not bad at all. Salad was good also. We had a large party and the servers were very nice and responsive. read more

I visited the upstairs dining room. The bar is upstairs, but next time I eat here I won't take the climb. The downstairs dining room will do fine. It was busy when I arrived, but I was seated quickly and the service was quick. The ambiance was just right casual with a nice upstairs view of downtown Ashland. I decided to test the basic meatballs and spaghetti. I always rate Italian restaurants by quality of the marinara sauce and whether the noodles are al dente. Not too sweet and not tart. Chunky bits of tomato, but creamy at the same time, generous meaty meatballs. As good or better as I've eaten in NYC or Italy. I just moved to Ashland and I like Macroni's better than its upscale neighbor across Triangle square. I will be eating here frequently. read more

Food's killer. Wine list isn't too extensive, but every pick on it is a winner. I love the mix of local and Italian vintages. The highlight of my last visit though was Holly! Old-fashioned Italian American food with not much flavor. If that's what you want, then OK. Tiny wooden bowls with salads that come out with main dishes. Young college age wait staff that say "awesome" and that type of language. Wine list does not look impressive but it's actually decent. Main thing here is the location and the setting. I ate upstairs and it was quite intimate and pleasant, with both indoor petite booths and outdoor balcony overlooking the main street. Service upstairs was awful. After about 20 minutes of no one taking my order I left and went downstairs because that restaurant was now open. I let them know that I sat upstairs for about 20 minutes with no one coming to take my order. They apologized and did their best to be very accommodating. It was a little uncomfortable because I can hear the staff talking about the situation the whole time I was there and the waitress proceeded to let me know that her boss blamed for her for what happened. First of all this was unfair to hurt the person that gave bad service should have been held accountable for that but either way you don't share that with your customer. This situation aside the real issue is the food and the atmosphere, it just wasn't good. I ordered a caesar salad that had boxed croutons on it and just wasn't anything special with regard to flavor. You could make croutons from scratch. For my dinner I ordered the carbonara with caramelized onion in it. It tasted weird, the caramelized onion gave the sauce an odd sweet taste and really took over the sauce which other than the odd sweet taste had no flavor. I ended up adding a decent amount of salt just to make it taste good. The atmosphere, they may have been going for rustic Italian but frankly it just look beat up and run down. The walls were in a serious need of a coat of paint and the booths had mismatched coverings. Again it may have been an attempt at a rustic decor but it just missed the mark. There seems to be a decent amount of restaurants in Ashland as well as nearby, I wouldn't visit this one again. read more

Friendly and inviting atmosphere with a genuinely nice staff. We had the calamari fritti, the Capellini d'Mediterranean and Fettuccine Carbonara. All of the dishes where hot, fresh, and delicious. We rounded out the dinner with the Lemon Ricotta Cheesecake, which was excellent! The pace of the dinner was a little slow and drink refills were not a priority as we were not drinking alcoholic beverages. I'd recommend this place if you're not on a tight time schedule. Hello everyone ! All of the food we got here was very delicious, and we got to sit on the top of the patio as well, and it was the perfect temperature to eat and we went around 7pm, highly recommended. We got the Calamari as an appetizer and it was great, and the bread and butter was good as well, but don't fill up on bread as the food is good too. My pasta was delicious and the shrimp made it even better. The ceaser salad had the PERFECT amount of Parmesan, dressing, and croutons were baked to be crispy as well. read more

We meandered into this place for a pre-play meal. Upon arrival, it seems as though about 100 other people had our same idea - we had a 20 minute wait. The place is fairly small, but, well decorated. The hostess was very nice and seemed to be not only sitting people but also helping clear tables - no biggie. The waitress was very nice, timely, professional, etc. The food, though supposedly Italian, seemed more like food trying to be Italian. I had a seafood Caesar which was ok, the salmon was a bit too dry but overall tasty. My daughter had the clam and mussel appetizer for her meal - it was quite good. My other daughter had a salad and the mac n cheese. The mac was pretty grubbin - four cheeses, baked parm on top. But, mac n cheese at an Italian Restaurant?? Yeah, made me think too. One oddity I noticed while perusing the specials, all of them had some sort of lemon-based sauce. Ok, I like lemons and all, but, all 4 of your specials have a lemon undertone? Variety people, we need variety!! Overall, a pretty good choice. Classic Italian! Just the way I like it! Warm bread is served at the table with bread or oil and vinegar. The waitress recommended the carbonara as the best dish on the menu so this is what I ordered. It was splendid. Not weighed down by a richness in flavor I felt like I could eat a decent size portion of my meal and not feel too full. It was a great blend of fresh ingredients cooked light and wonderfully full of flavor. I was glad I had ordered this dish. They did a great job. The spaghetti and meatballs was also a delight. The meatballs are huge. Everything tasted home cooked and really hit the spot. It felt like a good definition of comfort food and perfect on a cold Ashland winter night. Decent food, decent atmosphere, garbage service. It all started when we arrived and there was only 1 table filled. It was a weird time between lunch and dinner. The waiter didn't acknowledge us (a pet peeve of mine). Then he seemed confused as to why were there. After that he took our order and brought us our food pretty quickly. We got the calamari and cheese raviolis. The ravioli was pretty good but the portion was small. The calamari was ok and the serving size was big! No one checked on us the whole time and we had to flag someone down for the check. Remember, there was only one other table with customers. Not sure why the service was so awkward and terrible. Maybe this is the basic Italian restaurant to go to in Ashland now that Pasta Piatti has gone upscale. They have basic dishes like three-cheese ravioli. But I can't really tell from this meal, because I had the Caesar salad with salmon and shrimp. Delicious salad, though. The salmon came in a chunk, and the emphatically grilled shrimp on a skewer, so I had to disassemble them and mix them up with the greens. Great result, though. We had dinner at Macaroni's for the first time 2, weeks ago and sat in the front window seat. The food was delicious..no complaints there..but beware...we absolutely FROZE in the front room. It felt like there was no heat on at all even tho upon asking we were told that there is heat but it is just quite slow to work. Truly, my husband and I were so cold we could barely eat, ruining our "date night." Of course our food got cold almost instantly as well. We left as soon as we had eaten and turned the car heater on full blast.....I am not exaggerating when I say it took us over an hour to feel at all warm again. This experience really soured us on the establishment. If we are going to pay high prices for a dinner out we should not have to feel so utterly miserable while eating. read more

The restaurant was busy and the atmosphere was pleasant. It is located conveniently close to the Oregon Shakespeare Theater, and the service is good because of that (although getting our bill at the end of our meal took a little longer than we had expected). However, the pasta was basically tasteless. Three members of our party ordered three different past dishes, and we all felt the same way. The only person who actually enjoyed the food was the person who ordered eggplant. One member of our party works at an Italian restaurant in another city and said that it is possible to make Italian dishes that actually have flavor. Macaroni's might want to look into how that is accomplished. read more

The eggplant parmigiana is by far my favorite! Nina and I had dinner here last night. After the carbo-loaded breakfast we wanted something light before the theatre. I was surprised to discover that I hadn't reviewed Macaroni's, as we have eaten dinners here many times over the years. It's on E. Main Street itself, as opposed to Martino's Lounge, upstairs. They share a kitchen and the menus seem pretty much the same. We wandered in a bit on the late side and they accommodated us wonderfully, from the host who seated us to the waitress who took our order and got us our food so quickly that we were able to make it to the theatre w/ time to spare. We both ordered spinach salads w/ broiled shrimp. We were brought a basket of bread and butter. The salads were delicious, w/ spinach, sun-dried tomatoes and small bits of candied walnuts. The shrimp were on skewers and were not at all dry, although they were a little salty. It's a salad we've had here before, only upstairs on the patio, and we love it. The server made the steak sound really tender and large but it reality it was two slices of steak that lacked flavor and quality. I ordered a pasta dish with prawns but it can with only four prawns and there was literally no sauce. It came with a few cheese crumbles but it wasn't satisfying and it was lack in flavor all together. I had to ask for a side of alferado which wasn't that pleasant either. Went here for my husband's birthday while we were vacationing in Ashland. We were seated right away since we were the only ones in there and they promptly took drink orders and brought us crusty french bread (sooo good). Prices seemed fair. Ambience was nice with candle light. Macaroni and Cheese was AMAZING! My alfredo chicken dish was good, but chicken seemed like it was boiled (yuck). Other than that it was a nice experience. This restaurant is downstairs from Martino's, and they appear to share the same kitchen and menu. Ate dinner here twice. First table was in the front room by a window, very comfy and airy. Second table was in the back room in a booth, very claustrophobic -- low ceiling, snug seating. Service friendly, food OK. Italian food is most always OK, so far as I am concerned. This place is situated adjacent to the OSF theaters, and I am told that the actors adjourn to the bar at Martino's after the evening performances (just in case sniffing around actors appeals to you). read more

Every time I've made a trip to Ashland, I'd see this place and think, "hey, I really should try them". Tonight I finally got a chance to for an anniversary dinner, but was sorely disappointed.Not good. Couldn't even eat my food, unfortunately. Chicken looked as if a dog had chewed on it and they just covered it with sauce and served it. I almost took a point off for the salad. It just wasn't what I like. Barring that, this is easily a 5-star place. Nice waitstaff. I ordered the spaghetti. Because I have an aversion to pork and most seafood, that seemed a safe choice. Normally spaghetti in an Italian joint is going to be fair, but this was excellent! Great flavor. Usually marinara seems to be a stumbling block for Italian places, but this marinara had a bit of body to it. The meatballs were perfectly done and had just the right combination and amount of seasoning. I'm planning to go there again tomorrow. read more

Been in Ashland for 37 years. Never been here since this place has opened as I never heard one positive word from anyone - just another overpriced and mediocre tourist trap. Turns out that all those assessments were correct. The food was worse than mediocre with chicken almost to the point of burnt with no flavor of anything other than an overabundance of thyme while the fettuccine was greasy and pasty. Moreover, as a previous reviewer just said, we also experienced an inattentive and poorly trained wait staff who snickered and gossiped and used foul language as though they were at a "sleepover'. When we did have interaction with the staff, the "polite" small talk was indeed insipid and condescending. I truly cannot fathom the 4-star reviews - particularly from the New Yorker. If you want really fine Italian, try Osterio La Briccola on the plaza or even Vinnies in Medford, where the food, vibe and service is what a diner should rightly expect. read more

I understand that there are two places to eat, one literally just above the other. I'll probably try the lower establishment next time just to compare, but we had no complaints about what we had and the service we received here. Neo-classic Italian restaurant downstairs, trendy Shakespeare-out-the-back-door bar upstairs, Macaronis / Martino's pleases locals and tourists alike. Reasonably priced by Ashland standards (and a-typically inclusive of caesar salad or minestrone with your entree), you can dine here on traditional fare (Chicken Parmesan, Linguini with Calms, Fettuccini Primavera) as well as the unexpected: Oregon Smoked Salmon Ravioli, or Pollo Alla Martino (a char-grilled lemon and sage chicken breast with grilled shrooms - mmmmmm!). We often make a lighter weeknight supper out of an assortment of their antipasti (the Warm Spinach Salad is lovely, as is the Scampi con Lemon) or even just the Crostini Misti - four generous slices of toasted Italian bread each with it's own different broiled topping - with a salad or a cup of soup on the side. Add a glass of Montepulciano and call it a night in the neighborhood of $20, tip included. There's also a nice selection of Pizza's and Calazone to choose from ... and by all means you should at least once indulge in their famous Macaroni and Cheese.
