Tried Macayo's for the first time; ordered pickup. When we went to pickup at the indicated pick up time, it was not ready, so we waited about 10 minutes. No big deal. The hostess/waitress that was helping us was not friendly, in fact, she never greeted us , and wasn't happy that she had to look for our pick up order. The food itself was not bad. We ordered the red chicken taquito entrée, the shredded chicken relleno, and the Baja burro. My husband loved the Baja burro cream cheese sauce. The relleno was stuffed to the brim with shredded chicken, but it lacked a little in flavor. The taquitos were OK. A bit dry, but had good flavor. I think they could have used a bit more sauce. We were given a complementary bag of chips and salsa which was quite good. I look forward to returning and trying other various items on the menu. read more

It's been a long time since our last visit to Macayo's, and this was our first time at this location. We grabbed seats at the bar, and Riley took great care of us from start to finish. Our food came out quickly, fresh, and exactly as ordered. This location looked brand new and was very clean. The highlight for me was the $5 frozen margarita--it was the perfect way to cool off and paired great with our meal. I do have a little constructive feedback....I wish the carne asada cheese crisp had a bit more carne asada on it (see photo). The flavor was there, but a little more meat would have made it even better. Overall, great service, tasty food, and a fun visit. We'll definitely be back sooner than we waited this time! read more

Macayo's have been a long time staple in the Phoenix Valley. I have been to their restaurants since the 70's. As time has gone by, and they have grown. I personally believe that their quality of food has gone down. I currently live in Queen Creek, and they recently opened up a new location nearby. I was able to visit this location recently and was impressed. Now I'm not saying it's as good it was back in the days. But it has improved since my last visit over ten years ago. The Queen Creek location is not that big, it's pretty opened up and leans towards a sports bar atmosphere. The workers were very nice, and the food was very good. I had the stew green chili burrito. Always enjoy dinner at Macayo's! Love their chips and salsa with a cold margarita! Our favorite to order is the Baja Burrito with either chicken or shredded beef. Oftentimes hubby will order one and I'll order the other and we will split it. We still only eat half and have plenty for dinner the next day. Brought MIL here and she tried the Baja sauce and enjoyed it too. Macayo's also has great beans and rice. We came on a Thursday night and it was unusually busy but it also looked like they were short an employee or two. The young gentleman bussing the tables worked his butt off all night and did a great job. Also the girls behind the stand handled the long line of people waiting with patience and were very courteous. The restaurant is very loud though which made it hard to talk at our table. We went for lunch-- we both got lunch specials which were ok...nothing to write home about--mediocre at best. Then we decided to get a fried ice cream for dessert. What a disappointment! $6.99 for a SMALL scoop of if Ice-cream with chocolate, caramel and honey and not sure what else. Definitely NOT worth it and I would not recommend it. We decided on a whim to dine here for lunch and was not disappointed. For a Friday afternoon on Black Friday, it wasn't too crowded and we were seated right away. I always love free chips and salsa and it was tasty. The sauce had a slight kick. Their lunch specials were awesome and I got the Mexican Pizza which includes a soft drink for $10. My husband got the enchilada and taco combo with an iced tea for $12. Such a cheap lunch! They also do kids eat free all day every Wednesday. The restaurant is colorfully decorated although I did catch an unpleasant smell of an old rag. Despite that, it was probably bad luck and I'd come eat here again. read more

This place deserves zero stars. We came in with a party of five and requested a high-top table. There was already a clean, empty high-top available when we arrived, but the hostess didn't take down our information until we asked her to. We were concerned about being pushed to the back of the waitlist as more people lined up behind us. After waiting about 20 minutes, we asked if we could be seated at the same high-top that had been sitting empty since we walked in. We were finally seated, but we quickly found out why it had remained available. Our server, Carlota, provided the worst service I've ever experienced. When she first came to our table, instead of greeting us, she simply said, "What do you want?" Everyone can have a bad day, but while we were waiting nearly 30 minutes for our drinks, she spent most of that time chatting with the bartender and appeared to be in a great mood. We felt like an inconvenience rather than welcomed guests. When our food arrived, it was disappointing. It was hot on the outside but cold once you took a bite, as if it had been sitting under a heat lamp for quite some time. Even the enchiladas were dry. Toward the end of our meal, we were discussing whether to order dessert. Before we had a chance to decide, Carlota came to the table and said, "So, are we done yet, or do you want something else?" Her tone was rude and made us lose any interest in staying longer. While we waited to pay our bill, she was again standing and talking with the bartender ,this time without one of her sandals on, which only added to the unprofessional atmosphere. We heard how good this place is, so we thought we'd give it a try. We went when it wasn't busy, but it was happy hour as well. We got a seat right away. The place is clean and very cute. We got our drinks right away. I got the happy hour margarita and it was mostly lime juice. I barely tasted any tequila. I know it depends on the person who makes it. We got our appetizer pretty fast. We got the famous cheese crisps and it was pretty good. Cheesy and crispy. Myself and my family loved it. Our food was very good as well. Everything was delicious. You get good amount of food, that we took leftovers home. Our waiter was amazing, so sweet and kept our table clear and drinks full. The only drawback was the uncomfortable chairs and chipped paint on the wall just above the table took away from the ambiance of the restaurant. As a real local, I was excited to see a Macayo's open so close to home. My family and I visited during the initial opening--understandably busy--and found the food to be just average. We gave it another try this past week, but unfortunately, it felt plain and uninspired. I'm not a fan of the tall glasses used for margaritas (personal preference--it gives me Mill Ave flashbacks). Overall, the food and preparation feel low quality or poorly executed. The kids' mac and cheese was dry, and the fajitas tasted like they came from a Costco kit. This is a prime location with so much potential. Sure, the place might survive on snowbirds or the bar crowd, but imagine the success if people came here for genuinely great food! We'll try again in a couple months. For now we'll stick with Nandos. read more

This place sucks, the food was gross. My beans were crusty as if they were left out. Our service was bad, when we first got there and was sat down no one came to help us. We were sitting for at least 15 minutes and it wasn't busy. When we finally got our order the food was just ok. For the price I could microwave my food at home. To get our check it took over 20 minutes. Trying desperately to get her to notice us. The cheese in my enchiladas was weird, it wasn't gooey goodness, it was crumbling and weird. Came here because iv heard people talking about the food being good; we would have been better off going to chipotle. The service was nonexistent. The waitress walked away mid question and ignored us when asking for water or a straw. On top of that we were charged $9 for half a slice of avocado ? Who charges $9 for not even a full slice of avocado?! I ordered it for my 10 month old & we were brought over a brown half slice of avocado then charged $9 for it. Spend your money somewhere else. I will say the manager, did not get her name really made this experience so much better. I can't say enough good things about her. Our waiter on the other hand was very lackluster. No communication on a mess up on our food so we saw other families that came in after us leave before us and they were larger parties. Again, major kudos to the manager and her professionalism. I waited to write this review until I'd visited a few times, since this location is still fairly new (about a year old). The atmosphere is exactly what you'd expect from Macayo's--bright, colorful décor and a stunning mural that really stands out. The food itself is your typical Macayo's fare--when it's made correctly. Unfortunately, out of the five times I've been here, I've only once received exactly what I ordered. I've had things like ordering a shredded beef Baja burro and getting chicken instead, or nachos with carne asada arriving with no meat at all. The service is friendly but very slow and inconsistent. Even when the restaurant isn't busy, everything seems to take much longer than it should--both from the kitchen and the servers. Drink refills are rare, and I've had to track someone down every visit. I'm hopeful they'll work out these issues over time, because it would be great to have a reliable Macayo's nearby. For now, though, we still end up going to the Mesa location, since this one has been disappointing so far. read more

We went here for the first time today. We were excited to get a new Macayo's in Queen Creek. Walked in at 1 on a Tuesday for lunch. Stood at the host stand for 5 minutes. Completely empty restaurant except one table. One server clearing tables, a bartender behind the bar, and a manager. They all walk by us several times without even saying hello. We thought about leaving, but stayed. We ordered an appetizer and each got a lunch special. In the meantime several new tables had come in. The manager said that the bartender/server was the only server on duty. The female server was walking around and clearing tables. She would occasionally come by and get someone salsa or water. The table who was sat right after us left because they weren't being served. Time was dragging. We asked for more chips and salsa. We got more chips and no salsa. We noticed that every time we wanted a soda refill that the bartender/server would have to walk into the kitchen. Evidently there is no soda behind the bar. After a lengthy wait, our entrees came but no appetizer. So he put the order in again. This extended our time. The manager would walk around, but wasn't really doing anything. The other server would clean up but wasn't waiting on any of the 9 or so tables that were sat. One staff member doing two jobs in the middle of a lunch rush when they have new lunch specials seems off. Our server was kind and we felt bad for him as he seemed to be the only one working. This place screams of mismanagement. I think it would be a nightmare during a busy dinner. We would recommend choosing somewhere else. read more

Even when it was time to pay the bill that took at least 20min to get that processed and go. The food is always delicious but I wonder about their health safety practices. It took almost 10 minutes before our waitress took our drink order. She took our refillable mugs by putting her thumb into the cups. If that wasn't bad enough, she then licked her finger after it dipped into the salsa cup. Didn't she get a food handler's card? First time in a Macayo's in Arizona. We used to eat at one on Sahara Ave. in Las Vegas. So my first impression walking in was the ambiance. If you like eating in a warehouse-style place you'll love it. Now it might be better if it were full of people (we were early) but I do not enjoy the echo of the place. My wife loved her pork burrito and I had the grilled chicken tacos. The chicken was great but the pico was flat. No zing. I like my pico with a little "bite" to it, if you get what I mean. They also double-shell them (soft) which, IMO, is too much. The chips and salsa were subpar. The salsa was watery and the chips came out of a bag. Some places serve heated chip that are salted (some make their own) so this part of the meal was a disappointment. Having said all that, the wife says she wants to come back so we will. All-in-all an average experience. read more
