I think Mace continues to deserve the accolades that it gets. The setting is very nice + service was professional. I expected more creativity in the aesthetic of the bar + service, but it is pretty much just nice and fancy. However, the cocktails are stupendous. I got the Black Pepper cocktail (with sugarcane alcohol + nutmeg bitters; so cool!!) and, while it looked different than what I had expected, it was absolutely fantastic! Nice and sweet, but not too overwhelming. The other cocktails ordered at the table (the Vanilla & the Saffron were average (with the saffron being quite bitter wine pretty much)), but I was so pleased with mine. Classy and clean bar! Pricey but delicious and unique cocktails. I threw a surprise birthday celebration for my husband and everyone had a good time. I came back again and brought my friend from out of town. She also enjoyed the drinks and vibes. They have a large selection of creative cocktails. If you're a fan of egg drinks, get the sumac! It's so foamy and silky like a latte/ alcoholic egg-nog. There's also their version of the Miami Vice called "Wasabi + Cilantro". It sounds gross but it's so refreshing and tropical with just a hint of wasabi and cilantro. The panda cocktail was also very aromatic and a good contender. I was surprised that I wasn't a fan of the Mace cocktail. I thought it would be their star drink since it's the name of the bar. It was too sweet like cough syrup and it didn't taste very special. This is my 2nd time coming here, I liked the music/vibes and the concept of the menu. The drinks on the other hand are pricey (which I'm okay with because the concept is cool) but there's not a lot of alcohol in the drinks both the times I've went. It's just for the presentation honestly. Snacks aren't bad just on the salty side and smaller portions. I believe the tips started at 22% which for the service I received with my group of 4 was a regular experience. The most disappointing part of the experience was the temperature inside the restaurant. It was a hot NYC day (85°) and the inside of this place was gross! It was extremely hot, the doors were open too. The temperature was set at 50° but the thermostat was 80° inside! How can someone enjoy themselves with drinks in an expensive restaurant with a group while it's steaming hot? Place looks beautiful and was full of people on a Thursday night. None standing tho, it's a sit down kinda place even if for a few drinks. A date night place. Drink menu looked really enticing and interesting. However, out of 3 we ordered, 1 was returned, 1 was straight up cold borsch - beet juice with some alcohol in it and last one was just mediocre. A lot of fancy words on the menu, but the end product is meh. Now, maybe we just ordered wrong, but frankly if you a #93 of 100 best bars, #9 of 10 best cocktail menus or whatever etc etc you should have put more honest thought and feedback into end product. read more

Guys I know I JUST reviewed this place but I have been 3 times in the last month and can officially deem this as my favorite cocktail bar in NYC (and I love that it's tucked away in Alphabet City, far from the throngs of tourists.) Just went with a 2 gfs so between the 3 of us we tried about 80% of the newly released spring cocktail menu. Yanni (spellcheck?...sorry girl!) was our bartender and she was so friendly, knowledgeable but more importantly gave the best recommendations based on our desribed palates. We were all so impressed by how her choice for each of us were pretty spot on and even more impressed when we still liked each other's cocktails that we wouldn't normally order for ourselves. The cocktails were THAT good. My faves were the Basil Seeds (creamy mango drink with basil seeds that feel like chia) and Juniper Berries which is called a milk punch but is not creamy in any sense...well hard to explain, just ask the bartender and they'll explain the process. The Lemongrass was a chilled drink topped with hot fresh cream...so good. Oh and get that truffle popcorn to munch on in between drinks. Splendid spot! Went here a few nights ago with a friend of mine, and we both love cocktails so that's why we decided on Mace - something new and their menu looked amazing. We walk in and sit at the bar, the place is scattered with couples, it's a nice date spot for sure. I got the Thai Chili cocktail, and it was fantastic. I really want to like it here, but was appalled by the bartender. I want to comment on the drinks (which were okay) or the ambiance (dark, seemed like a date spot). But I don't think any of that matters. While we were waiting for drinks, we saw the skinny bartender with a mustache call one of the Hispanic guests a series of racial slurs under his breath after they tried to order. I don't think he thought we heard him. It was so clear this person hated their job and complained the entire night. He totally ruined our night as he was loud and obnoxious. I am a huge supporter of NYC restaurants and bars and understand the current struggle of personnel. All of that can be handled with a nice service. HOWEVER. Had one of the worst service experiences yesterday. Wait for drinks for over 45 minutes. Instead of apology we pretty much were told by server deal with it, we have one bartender. Hostess had the worst attitude and about 10 times throughout a night approached our party to either say we are on her way, or complain about the number of people we were. The space where we were standing was half empty and she said building is almost at capacity. She intentionally bumped several times into our guests to indicate they were blocking the way. All of this could have been handled very different and it is unacceptable even if you are stressed and understaffed. The 2nd host really tried his best to make things work and this was the only reason people still managed to have a good time. read more

Mace is a cocktail bar that routinely comes up on Best Of lists, though not as frequently as Death and Co and the like. Maybe the Avenue C location has prevented word getting out, but Mace is worth coming out of the way for. The drinks are all $14-16 and are each named after an herb. They have ingredients like Aperol, aquavit, beet juice, orange acid, young Thai coconut cordial, and mace mist. Just kidding, that's the ingredients for one drink. Reading the descriptions can make you feel a little lost in the woods. But that doesn't matter, because you should just get the Ghost Chili. Oh, you're scared of spicy stuff? It's not that spicy. You don't know what aquavit is? Well, it's basically gin made with caraway instead of juniper. Anyway, who cares what's in it? It's basically liquid gold. So creamy and nuanced, with a perfectly balanced note of heat. If you'll permit a digression: I was reading Bianca Bosker's excellent Cork Dork, and she asked a sommelier what made him decide he liked a particular wine. His very simple answer was that he finds that one sip naturally leads to another. (For me, this applies to most things I drink, because I am incorrigible.) The Ghost Chili is the perfect example of that: you take a sip, go through the full emotional spectrum, and return back to ground zero. And then you immediately take another sip. The other drinks I tried were good, but not amazing. The Moringa Leaves, with cachaca and pandan syrup, didn't taste creamy like the sunflower milk suggested; it was watered down by the mountain of ice. The Cinnamon 2.0 was intriguing with its pearled barley at the bottom, but was missing a special something. The Tamarind was my second favorite, though I wasn't expecting it to be blue-- and again with the ice. The Ghost Chili simply blows them all away. Service is good. Ambiance is nice and typical to the East Village-- low lights, exposed brick, intimate space. Decorations, naturally, include spice jars. It wasn't too crowded when we came in around 7:30 pm on a Friday, though it was starting to fill up an hour later. I've walked past here around 10 before and it looked busy but civilized. Take a leap of faith! And, in case I wasn't clear, get the Ghost Chili. read more

Came here with a group of 4 people to try their christmas cocktails- VERY FESTIVE INSIDE! There was a mini wait on a thurs night (20-30min). The place is very small with limited seating. I got the snowball old fashioned- reminded me of a fancy fireball. Drinks are on the pricier side- ~15 each - not including tax/tip. When I heard about the Miracle on 9th Street Pop up bar for the inventive Christmas cocktails, my friends and I were set to get our holiday cheer on. The holiday decor is spot on with festive lights throughout the space and wrapped presents on the ceiling. They played holiday songs and crowd sang along to Mariah Carey's "All I want for Christmas is you" and multi-colored disco lights twinkling for visual effect. The best part is, it wasn't too crowded like other holiday themed bars. We manage to snag some seats at the bar, which by pure luck because the wait time for a table was 30 minutes. I ordered the Mezcal cocktail (Santa Pants), which I wasn't really a fan of. Luckily my friend was not a fan of her SantaRex drink, so we traded drinks and I was so glad we did. I enjoyed the SantaRex cocktail much more and she did as well because she is a Mezcal fan. The SantaRex had cider and cinnamon flavors, mixed with whiskey and sherry. It wasn't sweet at all, a well balanced drink. I had a taste of the Jingle Balls Nog, nicely done and tasty. Our only complaint was the drinks had a lot of ice in them. For the price tag of $16, the liquor shouldn't have been skimped. My advice is to say "easy on the ice". read more

The vibes were pretty cozy when I arrived at Mace. I met up with some coworker friends. We enjoy a good bar with good food. We sat down in the first dining area two rows away from the bar. It was a booth on the wall. Each table had a half pained light HR bulb that gave us just enough light to see the menu. My coworker ordered the raw oysters and steak, they seemed to enjoy it. The broccolini was so tasty with the green sauce. Whenever there is octopus on the menu I just have to get it. I ordered the charred octopus and boy was I disappointed. It tasted like someone dropped a bottle of salt on the octopus. I ordered another one, which tasted better but came out cold. So disappointing. After a while the waitress had an attitude with us because she messed up a drink order and was upset that she needed to do it over. I think she started to ignore us after a while. I found the drinks here to be strong and quite unique. They give you what the drink is overall based on: corn husk, mace, white truffle and celery root are the few we tried; while there is a description of flavor profile and origin among other things. The mace was absolutely delicious and one of my favorite cocktails I've had in a long time- great texture (some thickness) with a strong beet flavor. I thought the white truffle was a miss - didn't see or taste any truffle. I really didn't enjoy the celery root - but the staff was kind enough to make me another drink. Staff was fast, attentive, and good. I thought the only downside was (personal preference) the overall music noise. Maybe I'm just getting too old for cocktail bars in the East Village, but it was very loud and hard to hear... Maybe at 10 it makes sense but I was there at like 7pm on a Friday night... I've been meaning to leave this review for a while now and finally am getting to it. I stopped in here about a month ago while I was visiting NYC and I can't tell you enough how amazing my experience was. We sat down at the bar and were greeted super promptly. Our bartender Dan was super friendly and was immediately making jokes with us. You could tell he was loving his day as him and his fellow bartenders were high fiving and laughing almost every chance they could get. They all really made us feel like we were part of the crew as we all chatted off and on. We ordered 2 drinks off the menu that were absolutely fabulous. Maybe the best we had in the city that trip, the flavours were absolutely superb and we loved them so much. I would highly recommend anyone who loves drinks, food, and good people to go here. Wow, what a fun bar. This was recommended to me by a friend who works and dines in the area often. Their drinks are creative and whimsical while the vibe of the bar itself maintains a casual but classy place. I appreciate the cocktail menu. It provides information like how the drink is prepared, what flavor profiles you can expect and what type of glass it will be in. I find this extremely helpful when I'm about to shell out $16 for a cocktail. The service was very good. I felt all of my questions were answered and I was well attended to.
