Amazing flavorful cocktails and bites! The drinks are unique profiles and tastiness - covered by a beautifully crafted menu. The food was also on point. Tapas are meant to be shared. The eggplant dip and the broccolini with salsa verde mole sauce were my faves. The cáptese toast is refreshing, but I would have preferred some more crunch. Reservation is highly recommended. We did a walk-in as a party of 4 on a Thursday evening and we were told to use the standing area. One of the hostesses said she will seat us once the seated space frees up but she lied because as the clock ticks to the right, there were spots open in the bar and the tables and they said they are reserved and cannot sit us. This bar was top 50 bars in the world for five years, and I can see why. The cocktails all have super unique recipes, that focus on particular ingredients from southeast Asia. This is one of the most unique cocktail bars I've been. I loved both of the drinks we got! The drinks were very well balanced, and probably not really strong, since I didn't really get any buzz from it. 1. Pandan - coconut oil washed vodka + jasmine infused dry vermouth + pandan. This was such an unique drink! The pandan taste is subtle, and if you like pandan, I would totally recommend getting this! I thoroughly enjoyed this drink 2. We attributed this to the visiting bar and the regular bartenders not working at their usual capacity, but it was still quite a bit. We tried the black sesame drink, the truffle drink, and cacao nib drink. The first was a bit reminiscent of DCP's Japanese cold noodle, with a cucumber/sesame oil mix. The last drink was a bit like a Manhattan/Old fashioned, more spirit forward. The truffle drink didn't really taste like truffles either. I was here a while ago before the Village Halloween Parade I believe while waiting for someone. As they are normally quite crowded, I was surprised I got a seat at the bar. The bartender was very friendly. She gave good recommendations and answered questions from me or the various others there and had a good chat with just about everyone. Place is a bit loud for a fancy cocktail bar but it is on this excellent food block. I'm unsure if the nearby Analogue or other cocktail bars are less loud. Anyway, as per the name, they do cocktails named and infused with spices. I went there during happy hour which has a few drinks only available then as well as some cheap snacks. I started with their happy hour special which was the Pandan Milk Punch. If I recall correctly from her description, it had two types of rum, clarified milk, and black tea. It was very tasty and as per it being a type of milk punch quite sweet. The pandan added a nice color as well as the unique floral flavor usually associated with it. Quite strong and delicious and I would recommend it especially as far as cheaper cocktails go. I got some food while drinking from the happy hour special which was the Spicy Salmon Belly Tartare with nori, salmon roe, and chives plated on crispy rice paper. This was alright. Salmon was clearly fresh but there wasn't that much of it. Creative presentation but definitely a fancy bar dish (more style than substance.) As my prior drink was very good, I decided to get another cocktail. After looking through and getting recommendations, I got the Curry Leaves with curry leaves-infused sherry , matcha infused dry curaçao, pistachio orgeat, and rectified miso apricot juice. I haven't had a good matcha infused drink in a while since Angel Share closed and the other ingredients had my name on it as well. This as per the ingredients had strong tropical flavors as well as some subtle bitterness from the matcha. I love the taste of curry leaves and this indeed had some subtle flavoring from there. I came here around 11 pm on a Thursday night and there were a good amount of people! A lot of people were on dates so it was nice to people watch. The bar has dim lighting and I loved the ambiance. Bar Cham, a bar based in Seoul, was doing a guest shift at Mace, so I made a reservation to come in that day. The Bar Cham drinks were to die for. The ones I tried were very refreshing. The Soloman's Seal Root was slightly sweet, and the foam on top was perfect. The Naeng-ee was more herbal and slightly bitter but still very good. At the end of their shift, Bar Cham staff came around to the tables to give postcards. After this amazing experience, I'm hoping to go to their actual bar one day in Seoul. The drinks at Mace itself were all based on spices/herbs around the globe. They were very creative and the ingredients represented that. I tried a version of the pandan that was off menu and the chervil on Mace's menu. The pandan tasted too artificial for me to enjoy. However, the chervil was great. The names of their drinks are ingredients or spices that are incorporated in the cocktails. One cool fact that I found was that this bar is owned by one of the owners of Cocktail Kingdom. My first drink was the pandan ($18.50) which had a slushie texture. It was sweet from the pandan and delicious. My second drink was the chaat masala ($17.50) which was strong like a Manhattan but fruity. They used seasonal fruits in their infusion which added to the freshness. My third drink was the mace ($17.50) which was big on beet flavors and easy to drink. The beet juice was the main flavor and I don't think I've ever had a cocktail with beets before. The service and the bartenders were great. The drinks were unique and different from all other menus I've seen. The drinks lived up to the hype. The atmosphere was very cool with nice lighting and a cool design above the bar with various spices. The drinks were delicious and all involved an associated spice. I thoroughly enjoyed my pandan and later the cocoa nibs, both were whiskey based drinks. The vanilla was very tasty and reminded me of a milkshake. This is an excellent cocktail bar. The descriptions of the cocktails make you say "Yes, I'll have that." Almost like a reflex. :) My cocktail was made with fig leaf infused tequila, tomato water, miso, and some other unique items. Spectacular. Other drinks included an old fashioned smoked with frankincense (yes, smelled like church a little LOL). Very nice cocktails and happy hour prices as well. We tried some of their happy hour foods too. Oysters, calamari and pickled veg. All were great. I came here with a friend on Christmas Eve after dinner in the area. I've been here once before a year ago and had a decent experience. It wasn't particularly busy when we came for drinks. However the service was not attentive at all. Not sure if it was the lack of staff since it being a holiday eve, but it took a very long time to be able to grab a server who would take our drink order. The wait for the drinks themselves was even longer to a point we questioned if our order was ever put in. Maybe like 15-20 minutes later did our drink order come in. I've heard that this place is a really nice date spot, but I came here with two other friends and the ambiance was amazing. My friends and I were surprised and grateful to snag a day-of reservation--it's nice to see that despite its awards, it's not impossible to get a table. Our reservation was for outside seating, but it was raining, so the hosts graciously seated us indoors. The ambiance of the bar was nice but nothing too special -- lots of plants, dim but romantic lighting. Where Mace stands out is its cocktail menu. First of all, the pictures and descriptions on the menu look and read like art. The illustrations of the main ingredients were beautiful, and I appreciated that the menu highlighted each drink's general flavor profile (eg, "fruity and spicy," "nutty and tropical"), as sometimes it can be hard to imagine that from just reading a list of exotic ingredients. My friends and I ordered the Mace, the Ube, and the Dill -- and they were all delicious!! Seriously, no duds here. I took a chance on the Dill, and I was nervous about its description as "green and spicy," but it really blew me away. It was fresh, sweet, creamy, and indeed had a zing from scorpion pepper tincture, but rather than overwhelming spice, it was more of a warm burn after your initial mouthful. Such a unique cocktail! I am looking forward to coming back to Mace to try some of their other drinks.
