Very soggy, and the ingredients were off...the meat on their spicy pizza was not of good quality. And their pizza with olives was just a horrible composition. Something was off altogether with my pizza and I was very sad. I kept a smile on my face but I was really not happy and my girlfriend did not like the pizza either. Thin pizza with chewy doughy crust - ugh delicious! We ordered two pies to go for a picnic at Astoria Park - broccoli rabe (white sauce) and the anchovy capers (red sauce). The former was a bit bland in comparison to the latter which was salty/fishy/umami but balanced each other out well. Happy to find this gem in our neighborhood since, sadly, there just isn't a ton of black-owned restaurants in Astoria or LIC. Friendly staff and amazing pizza - what else do you need to convince you to go? During these economically hard times, I definitely suggest calling in your order instead of using an ordering platform. Let's begin with the thuddingly obvious: there's no shortage of excellent pizza in NYC. The only thing that's changed about this fact over the years is the variety, with the classic NY slice now sharing space with other regional varients. Macoletta specializes in what is perhaps the first instance of this stylistic divergence: the Neapolitan pie. True to its name, this style of pizza comes straight from the old country, and its translation here is at its best a reliable combination of traditional ingredients and modern cooking. The modern aspect is hard to ignore, presenting itself here as a mammoth steel contraption of an oven that the entire restaurant revolves around. It's worth taking a seat at the bar just to witness the device in action, rotating various disks adorned with toppings as they rise up into the heavenly glow of the oven's heat. You can practically hear a choir of angels when a perfectly cooked pizza descends back into view. While the toppings on these pizzas can vary in quality, the crust is always impeccable. Delightfully airy and chewy with crunchiness exactly where it needs to be, it's a shame that the kitchen is still working out the kinks on some of their more creative options. We'll start with the good ones: go for the Diablo pizza if you're not a vegetarian. The spicy nduja really elevates this dish and is consistently excellent. You won't go wrong with classic Margherita or Bianka (spelled with a "k" here, possibly a nod to the neighborhood's greek background), which are good, flavorful versions of these standard pizzas. While the kitchen should be praised for their willingness to experiment, this is where things begin to go awry. An otherwise sumptuous pizza topped with broccoli rabe and sausage is overwhelmed by cold dollops of ricotta. Eggplant w/straciatella should be an obvious combination, but the version offered here can't seem to shake a tinny aftertaste that permeates throughout an otherwise solid dish. A small selection of well-assembled salads help lighten up the otherwise rich fare, but even they are sometimes let down by the inconsistent quality of their ingredients (looking at you Caprese). While seasonality can be an issue, the kitchen should still do its best to ensure consistency when placing these items on the menu, and sad bland tomatoes are always tough to take. However, a friendly staff and reliable baseline of quality means I won't knock off more than one star. My wife and I love having this place as a local option and hope to see them continue to grow as time goes on. Definitely worth a visit. read more

Even though the place is very nice and pizza is decent, we had a terrible experience. We arrived around 9,30 pm and no one greeted us , they simply told us to take a table outside . We waited more than 10 min for the water and no one clean the dirty table . The waitress could barely understand English and she had zero knowledge of the menu . Finally we ordered but we never get any bread silverware or plates , we had to ask for it when we got our appetizer (25 min of wait ), she brought the bread when we were done with our appetizer . Then the pizzas arrived at the table the runner told us the server made a mistake and ordered a large Diablo instead of the individual one but to avoid to wait more time we could keep the large one . She never came to check on us . when finally she decided to came outside we ask for the check. We pay and we left very unhappy and we made a double check to our bill and we noticed she charged us for her mistake , we had to came back to fix the "mistake" and she didn't even apologize! Solid 4.5 stars. They have a variety of pizzas - from white pizzas and classics to pizzas with goat cheese and make your own. All are quite tasty and a regular is enough for two people to share if they have an app. For those who want to eat outdoors, their outdoor area is well built and sizable with picnic tables and a few high tops. It's primarily where my friends and I have dined, particularly during COVID. Service has always been good as has the food and drinks (though we haven't eaten off the pizza menu yet as those are so good!). A great neighborhood restaurant. read more

If you're in this part of Astoria (were you at Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden, too?), I would recommend getting their brick oven pizza! As it was going to rain, after grabbing a drink at Bohemian Hall, my friends and I strolled into Macoletta. The beautiful brick oven pizza is hard to miss! We ordered a bottle of wine (Sauvignon Blanc) and it was fine, nothing spectacular. Then for starters, we asked if they had a meat and cheese board, but alas they only offered one or the other. The waitress insisted we get both, but since we only wanted a mixed board and it wasn't possible, we went with the most recommended app: the burrata salad. And well, you can't really mess up a burrata salad, so it was great! Then we ordered the Crudo pizza (san marzano tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, arugula, grated parmigiano reggiano, prosciutto di parma) -- this was EXCELLENT! I mean, I'm always down for a prosciutto and arugula pizza, and even my Italian friend said that the prosciutto was of good quality (dragging an Italian friend to an Italian restaurant is almost impossible -- IYKYK!), so that was big. There were four of us, so we ordered the larger pie and we each got two slices each, though not as filling as we hoped. So we ordered a pasta, the rigatoni bolognese (homemade rigatoni, beef and veal slowly cooked in a classic bolognese sauce), and while good, wasn't really a lot. (Get the theme here?) For dessert, we were stuck between choosing the lava cake or the tiramisu, and when we asked the waitress, she again insisted we get both and was disappointed when we just went with one: the lava cake. Which was also just ok. So the ambiance was nice and cute, but combined with the pricey food and the pressure we were getting to order either two of the meat and cheese boards or desserts, we were a little put off. Buuuuut if I find myself near Bohemian, I could go for some brick oven pizza -- though I'll just stick with that. A friend and I were looking for a place with outdoor seating and decided to visit this place so I could try out the pizzas that I've seen in the photos. I ordered the "meat lovers" pizza despite me being a bit surprised by the descdescriptioniption that it only included 2 different types of meat (pepperoni and sausage). I decided to give it a try anyway. Well, good to say that I thought it was really good. The crust was slightly charred (which I like) - and maybe... just maybe I personally like it well-done a little more, but still it was very nice. No complaints at all. Now.... to be honest, they did ask if I wanted any red pepper flakes or garlic to which I said yes to the pepper flakes.. and to this day I am still waiting for the flakes. HAHAHA - no worries, it was just as well since it was more than fine without it. The pizza you see in the pic is for the large size pizza which is fit for 2-3 people I think. The outdoor seating is made up of benches outsides in a pretty enclosed area. The service was nice. The bathroom, though, is pretty dimly lit, though. It was a very good experience! read more

Dinner was delicious, but the pizza making class was delicious, fun AND educational. We had a dedicated waitress/host along with the owner (chef Walid). It was wonderful!!! We ordered Bianca and Mushrooms. Out of those two I really liked Bianca's flavor and pine nuts added that extra oomph. Mushrooms was ok, but not memorable. Lovely outdoor seating. I'm gluten and dairy free and am always apprehensive of pizza places but Macoletta surprised me with delicious GF pizza crust! It was flavorful, had the crust bubbles and didn't taste anything like the cardboard I usually get. The pizza I got was cheese-less so didn't try their vegan cheese but would def go back for another try! Only reason 4/5 stars is because waitress was kind of hard to pin down. Bellissimo, this is a great Pizzeria well worth the travel from New Jersey for the perfect pizza. The restaurant was busy but we were greeted by friendly staff, and seated. Placed the order and as I looked around and noticed the restaurant was very clean with nice decor.....and the pizza arrived in minutes very fast very efficient very personal, extremely tasty. We decided to try the desserts too, Mini Canolis & the Nutella Pizza. Definitely try this place out, you'll get to see your pizza prepared and cooked in the fancy oven it flys. Great addition in Astoria! This place is right next to Bohemian Beer Garden. The resto looks trendy and big so good for groups/birthdays. I like the bar area where you can see how they make the pizza. We ordered Bianca (White). It was fresh and tasty. We also got to try their dessert like poori with Nuttela. They cut it in half and add nuttela inside with powdered sugar. Yum! Overall satisfied. One thing to note as of this evening, they don't serve alcohol yet. read more

My favorite pizza place in Astoria! I have not had a pizza here I didn't like (and I've had 8 of them). I've come twice during COVID-19 for outdoor dining. The pandemic is definitely messing up some supplies and they've been out of a few ingredients both times I came, but what they do have is on point! My favorite pizza is either the sweet and spicy diablo, or the vegetarian Cara. Or actually maybe it's the prosciutto and burrata pizza. I can't decide, like I said, they're all delicious! The pizzas in my pictures are all the "small" size, which is shareable if you split an appetizer or could be a whole meal for 1. The first time I came, I brought three friends and we split 3 pizzas between the four of us and it was the perfect amount for me. Service here is very friendly and the umbrellas that they have set up for outdoor dining are very strong and sturdy! Macoletta is one of the best pizza joints in Astoria. Your experience could be a 4 or 5 depending on your preference for pizza. If you're into Neopolitan pizzas, then this is the place for you! I recommend the Diablo, a 5-star Neopolitan experience for me. The Diablo is a sweet and spicy pizza, packing large amounts of flava! In general, this joint has some of the best ingredients I've seen at a pizza shop. Their selection of meats and cheeses are of high quality! They don't go heavy on the sauce, but there is just enough, plus it is quite tasty. Also, this establishment is consistent - a critical factor if you're living in the neighborhood. They make every pizza fresh, just for you :) 5-star ratings for pizza are hard to come by in the five boroughs of NYC (plus LI and Connecticut). I cannot claim this is the best pizza, with so many amazing spots in the city, plus my ultimate bias for classic NYC slices being a factor. What I can say is that outside of NY, this place would be a 5, and in NY they hang with the best. Macoletta is delicious and definitely worth the trip! read more

The one star as for the food. Service is beyond horrendous. The staff messed up the drink order, did not place our food order, and went out of their way to be inattentive. The menu pricing for the build your own pizza option is exceptionally duplicitous. We were encouraged to employ the 'build your own' option for our dinner as a way to avoid our allergens by our server. Nowhere on the menu does it indicate the build your own option pizzas come with a base price of $12-$14 before adding your toppings, which cost at minimum $2 per topping and max out at $6 per topping. My 12" pizza with prosciutto, capers, arugula and cherry tomatoes came out to $24!!! The same pizza on the regular menu with cheese cost $18. How does that make sense? And how does the menu not indicate a baseline price for the pizza when you build your own? When I complained to the staff about this, I was met with a blasé attitude, and no apology. Deliberate deception and bad business practices. Avoid at all costs. We will not be back. read more
