Friends stopped by while we were in Charleston. Seemed like your typical sports bar with pub grub - the type of place where you can't really tell if it's a chain or trying to be one. The Good: * There was a $2 IPA special on a Saturday night - that was awesome!! * Service was great for a big group - there was a spill and the cleanup was prompt. The Bad: * Empty for a big place during dinner time on a Saturday night. Something about the atmosphere was just lacking. Sort of like the decorations came from a "pub/sports bar" package. * The food. We were really disappointed by just about everything we ordered that wasn't alcohol. All of us had either run the Charleston half marathon or a 5K that morning, so we were in the mood for unhealthy pub grub. The nachos were mediocre at best - they didn't have nearly enough cheese or toppings, so we ended up eating half a plate of plain tortilla chips. And the fried mac n cheese balls were hot and greasy without any flavor. I never leave reviews, but I felt like this was necessary for the sake of other women who will go here in the future. I was at mac's with two girlfriends, and for the majority of the time we were there, another customer was watching us. I mean, constantly watching us. He even followed us to the bathroom. He would occasionally try to talk to us and we would ignore him. We eventually left because he was freaking us out. A couple hours later, I got several calls and messages from him on Facebook. The only possible way I think he could've gotten my name is from a bartender. I do not know this for sure, but I truly have no idea how he could've gotten it otherwise. We were visiting here on New Years Eve and had a COMPLETE blast. It was your average, bar-bar with normal drinks and a fun crowd. We popped a bottle of champagne, drank too much, kissed at midnight, and wandered off to our hotel after midnight. Their Irish nachos are amazing!! Unfortunately I was sharing them with 5 other people, next time I will for sure be ordering just nachos for myself. I also tried their Chicago style Italian beef sandwich with a side of Mac and cheese. Overall it was average, the Mac and cheese was noodles with melted cheese on it, nothing special. This place had a weak sound system that sounded awful. The Raspberry Martini was terrible and served in a water glass. I don't know what the recipe was and the waitstaff couldn't tell me..."some kind of raspberry flavored stuff." The dogfish beer was Ok. I think this is a college drunk place and not really interested in any type of quality. Guess if your goal is tap beer, this is the place for you. It was very disappointing. My sister and I came for a girls weekend and wanting to see the playoff game with the Cubs, thought, what better place to watch it. Well, we had asked several times for staff to put the game on. They were rude about it. Said they had no screens available. They were showing everything else, But the Cubs game (they only had it in one tiny screen by the front and the view was obstructed). The bar tender told me she didn't know. After a while (4th inning) some other Cub fans asked and she grabbed a remote and put it on for them. I have never, ever seen such rude servers. We stopped here after supper and before a carriage ride. I was a great place to try some new drinks and chill for a minute in between activities. I got the cherrie limeade and the red bull slushy thing. I really liked the cherrie limeade! Irish nachos, a pitcher of beer and your favorite basketball game on any flat screen you want. It's pretty great, for lunch or at 1am. If you're not counting calories (or looking for a great way to cheat your diet), get the Irish Nachos which are fresh potato chips smothered in everything you would ever want in nachos. They use real ground beef (not the taco kind) and chicken. Absolutely delicious. This is a great bar for sports, and hanging out as they have great booths, couches and games. My only complaint is leaving the front door open when it's pretty much freezing outside. We had to leave 10 minutes before our game ended because it was so cold after sitting there 2 hours in the afternoon :( They also make us feel at home since apparently it's an IU alum who owns the bar (my alma mater), and supports all the Chicago-area/midwest teams. read more

I thought I would give it a try since me and my girlfriend were hungry and there weren't too many places open at the time. The place was like a typical sports bar. While visiting Charleston over the weekend, my girlfriends decided to stop by for a bite to eat. Definitely glad we did! One of my friends is a huge Chicago Bears fan, which was our main reason for choosing Macs. The bar definitely had an Irish feel, with Bears memorabilia all over. Tap handles hung from the ceiling, and there is an awesome Grand Marnier tree by the front door. The bartenders were quick & courteous. We attempted to wash down our hangovers with Stone IPAs & Holy City Mud Pluff Porter while waiting on our food. We choice to split appetizers, so tht we would have variety. We started with the fried Mac & cheese bites. Crispy on the outside, stuffed with super gooey Gouda. Absolutely delicous! We also enjoyed the Irish Nachos, Pepperjack Stuffed Pretzels & Sweet Potato tots. The tots were out of this world- served with a honey like butter, these are better than dessert! I've been here a few times, and I like it less and less every time. The high point is obviously the insane number of TVs. From almost any vantage point in the bar, you're looking at at least two HDTVs, and it's usually more like five. That said, every time I come here now, the service gets worse and worse. The place was way understaffed. It's got a huge bar and a lot of tables, and they probably had 3 to 4 bartenders on and 2 waitresses for the whole place. We found a table, and the only time we saw a waitress in 30 minutes is when she came to clean the table. We ended up just taking a spot on the couches and ordering anything we needed from the bar. The drinks were OK, and the food was average. It has all the trappings of an Irish place: the beers, the obligatory shepherd's pie on the menu, the decorations. That said, aside from that, it's basically downtown Charleston's very own Applebee's. I mean, it's not trying to be fancy, but it's not even as Irish as Tommy Condon's. This place could use some more staff like no one's business. I told a bartender about broken rocks glass on the floor, and it was still there when we left 45 minutes later. It actually had a newly broken beer bottle on top of it by the time we left. The place definitely has potential, but right now it's not really a good spot. read more

This pub is on East Bay St in the middle of all the action. Trivia was going on that Thursday night while I was there from approx 9:00 pm to 10:30 pm. It had a good size crowd without being too packed. The music (between trivia questions) was loud but you could still here people across the table. Never a wait at the bar. No one in my party of 7 ordered food. Beware: Shots vary on the bartender. We ordered 4 rounds of lemon drop shots. Several times we got girlie shooters (vodka and sour mix shot) and others we got straight up vodka shots. The cost was the same. You are carded at the door so don't forget IDs!! read more

I used them for the comfy couches and $2 beer of the month while I was catching the Aggie women win the SEC while on vacation (Whoop!) . I think they have 16 or so TVs on site, and the staff was really awesome about setting up whichever game we wanted to watch. If I'm ever in CHS again and needing to catch a game, this is the place I'm going to. Stumbled upon this pub while walking from the market to the waterfront park on Sunday. We passed it and ended up coming back after looking at a few other restaurant menus. Plus the World Cup game was on. When we returned their was a hostess (we think) sitting at the stand. She said nothing at all to us. So after about 30 seconds we headed inside. Not sure what her purpose was but I am pretty sure she was failing at it! They have self seating. A bartender originally began serving us then a server took over. The bar was full but only a few tables were occupied. I was impressed with their menu considering it is a Pub. There were a lot of healthy choices and options for many items. I ordered a chicken sandwich. All burgers and chicken sandwiches had an option of a regular bun or a wheat bun, cheese choice, could add a wing sauce, and another topping. They also had a variety of options for sides. I prefer wheat buns so I was very happy about that options. I ordered the side salad for my side. It was a nice size. This is a good place to grab a beer and enjoy some average bar food at reasonable prices. We had Alligator bites as an appetizer, which was pretty cool (tasted fine), but it was part of a 'special menu' for the SEWE event that was in town that weekend. The rest of our food was alright. The wraps were decent, but the chicken was low quality. The only bad thing was the house chips. They were burnt and just didn't taste good. Our server was good, but after taking our orders, he was very robotic (not a terrible thing), so his personality dropped. We received our food and drink in a timely fashion, but there was no connection with our server. The thing I enjoyed most about this restaurant was they served the Sweet Potato tots with some type of honey cinnamon butter. It was awesome! BEAR DOWN I'm a huge Chicago Bears fan and live in Charlotte so it was amazingly refreshing to be able to watch the Bears beat the Niners on MNF while surrounded by Bears fans. But because the waitress was so nice, it made it better. The one dish I thought was pretty awesome... Sweet Potato Tator Tots. Yes, tator tots. Nostalgia, with a twist. My wife and I were on our way back from the haunted jail tour. We passed this bar on the way to our parking garage. Looking for somewhere simple to sit down for a meal, Mac's fit the bill as a simple burger sports bar and grill. Maybe we were a little hesitant because it was singer/songwriter night. It is quite loud in there even with the folk acoustic music and I am not really a fan of the typical whining about some girl and what she did to you music which is what was being played. That said, there were sports options on the tv and the music created a collegiate feel. The bar, itself, has a semi Irish theme. With just a few Irish inspired menu items, I wouldn't call it an Irish bar. They do have Guinness on tap though. Always a plus! This is probably one of the only true bars, in downtown Charleston, with a small section of the menu for kids. Otherwise, the menu is filled with burger options and solid sides. We started with an appetizer of 12 mild wings. The mild wings are fairly standard Buffalo wings. They aren't standard bbq wings with a semi sweet sauce. These are true hot wings. If you have a complete aversion to such things, stay away from them or just ask for naked wings. As it were, the wings weren't overly hot. They were just right. They had a decent amount of meat on the bone and were prepared just right. My wife ordered her meal off of the appetizer menu. She got chicken fingers and fries along with a soda. I got a cheeseburger with fries and a Guinness which, of course, one is never enough. My wife enjoyed her chicken fingers. They were standard sports bar fare. The fries were absolutely tasty.My burger was prepped just right and was very good. All in all, the food is what you will find in a sports bar. There were interesting menu items such as sweet potato tots, Irish nachos, and the mac and cheese. Overall, it was a good dining experience. We needed a place to rest our weary feet and get out of the heat. Our waitress was one of the highlights of the experience. She was quick to serve us, and very friendly and warm engaging in conversation and accommodating. The price might have been a little high. But, you don't go to downtown Charleston if you are looking for Mcdonalds. We left with about a $40 bill for both of us before tip. But I must say, most restaurants and bars will cost about the same in Charleston. I recommend Macs for the casual diner. read more

This was great.... Recommended by the bartender at Pavilion Rooftop bar. We said we wanted great beer selection and friendly, casual atmosphere. We got it! And a great appetizer along with it. $3 draft beer (we had a local Coast IPA) and cheap appetizer (southwest chicken egg rolls - delicious.) Our bartender, Angela, was friendly, informative and fun.
