A long time staple of restaurant culture in the Short North, Mac's has been going strong for decades. With a more recently updated interior, including windows that open in the front to allow summer breezes, what has not changed over the years is the exceptional quality of authentic pub food, and the friendliness of the staff. As times have changed, a few more healthy dining menu options have been added to the traditional lineup of burgers, pub food, and Scottish dishes. Take out food is of course available as as well as ample seating for dining on site. Parking can sometimes be a challenge in the Short North, but for an opportunity to have a meal at this great restaurant it's very much worth the extra effort. There is a fully stocked bar with a wide variety of single malt scotch & spirits at various price points inclusive, and many varieties of beer and ale on tap. We popped in on Saturday, not realizing there was an OSU game that day which was a major mistake on our part. Parking was a nightmare, traffic was bumper to bumper, but we were vested at this point. Mac's is situated in a strip mall area near the Convention Center with an adorable facade where on nice days they can roll up the windows for open air seating in the front of the restaurant. They actually had the windows open on Saturday, so we chose to sit further inside since it was a little chilly that day. When we sat down (you choose your own seat here) it was really noisy and crowded. They had one waiter for the entire restaurant, a very nice young man who stopped by the minute we sat down to tell us his name and that he would be right with us. After 10 minutes he came by and took our drinks order (two Cokes) and we ordered pretzel bites as an appetizer. He did not take our entire order though, and said he would be right back with our drinks. 15 minutes later he was back with two waters; we told him we ordered Cokes and off he went again, returning in 10 minutes with Cokes. Our pretzel bites came out from a guy who looked like the manager, but we still had not placed our main order. We finished the pretzel bites (they were good) and decided that 40 minutes of waiting to place our order was a tad lengthy, so 5 minutes later when he finally made it over we asked for the check. He was very apologetic and ran off to get our check. 10 minutes later, he's back with the bill but drops it off and runs to another table. We waited and waited, planning to pay with our credit card, but after yet another 10 minutes and no sign of him, we left cash and got out of there. We may try these guys again on a non-game day, but I'm not totally convinced the service would be any better regardless. After 20 minutes or so of us arriving, the restaurant had cleared out quite a bit but it didn't help us get any closer to placing our order. Great selection of elevated pub food, including triple layer grilled cheese, scotch eggs, sauerkraut balls, Guinness stew, and bangers and mash. I they have a fabulous beer menu with some wine and cocktail options. I just got off the road so I had a refreshing low-calorie kettle one botanical cucumber and mint with lemonade for nine dollars. Not bad. Definitely the kind of spot you would want to come to you with your Homies. I'm here alone on the St. Patrick's Day, but it's perfect. Mac's was the first stop on my "figure out which bar is the vibe right now" walk with a friend. I felt like Mac's had a really family-friendly and casual feel to it. No loud, crazy music or TV (or people). If you're looking to hang out with some friends, eat, have a drink, this is probably a good spot for that. I did not eat any of the food, but the pretzels with cheese enticed me. If they had said it was beer cheese sauce, I would have 'bitten' (see what I did there). We got CBUS Collins which we enjoyed! We came here for a friend's birthday on a Friday night and they had a couple tables open. It's a seat yourself situation. There's only a few tables in the back that are available for parties bigger than 4 people. They seemed as if they were short staffed so the waitress didn't come around as often. Drinks and food came out pretty quick. I got a Moscow mule and it was alright. I also ordered a Philly cheese steak with their house fries. The fries were good, but too thin so they weren't as soft. Mac's Proper Pub has been on my radar for a few years because my best friend took me there to try the sauerkraut balls, and I've been going back to have them ever since then. Recently I discovered that they have a great happy hour which includes half off apps and specialty cocktails, so off I went to have a dinner of apps. My order included scotch eggs, fried brie, spinach and artichoke dip, chicken fingers, and of course the sauerkraut balls. The scotch eggs were tasty-- served cut in half with a dipping sauce, and they were better than any scotch eggs I've had in the past. Crispy and delicious, especially with the gluttonous cream cheese dip. The fried brie is also very tasty-- served with slices of toast and definitely not as stinky or strange as brie can often be, more palatable because it's fried with a crispy outside. This is a great 'intro fried brie' for those who it may be too strong for normally. The spinach and artichoke dip is yummy and served with interesting sliced curly-esque fries. I loved the fries I just wish there was a bit more dip so I wasn't left with so many extra fries and nothing to dip them in. The chicken fingers were pretty average. Not a whole lot to say about those and probably wouldn't order them again. I also wasn't a fan of the sauce they were served with. The sauerkraut balls did not disappoint as usual-- sauerkraut and sausage all wrapped together and served fried with ranch(?) to dip them in. I'm not crazy about the dipping sauce but the portion is pretty large-- it comes with 6 sauerkraut balls that take at least 2-3 bites to finish. The bar itself is long and slender with an incognito room with a pool table in the back that I just noticed on this trip, despite having been there many times before. I'll definitely be back to blow off some steam with a game of pool during happy hour soon. read more

It's been three years since I left my first review of Macs and after my first experience with them since COVID, I figured why not give an update. Honestly, a lot here has changed over the past couple of years. For starters, they remodeled the entire place and the old pizza/bar place next door is no longer connected because, well now it's a different business. The update was much appreciated and definitely adds to the curb appeal. I love that they have those big windows at the front and when it's nice out, they'll open them up. I've had many funny conversations with patrons while walking by. Along with the facelift, they updated the menu a bit. And now due to COVID, they have health and safety measurements in place. Prior to COVID and after the remodel, this was my favorite place to play some pool and chill with friends. I spent NYE here once, after the ball dropped friends and I headed here to play some games. It's a great, chill little nook to play in. Overall, the food isn't my favorite but I keep coming back because of the atmosphere, affordable drinks, and pool table. I was the only person in the pub during the lunch hour on a Tuesday. The pub was clean and the server was friendly but shy. I ordered the Scotch Eggs and fish and chips. I didn't realize the fish was a sandwich so I didn't want all of the bread. It was like a fish stick stuck between a hotdog bun. Not what I expected. The taste was ok but I wouldn't order it again. First time here! Don't know how I've ever missed this place in the short north. Found it because was looking for a happy hour that started at 3 and not 4pm and this was the place! I have to say it is inexpensive and great deals for happy hour. I ordered the spinach artichoke dip which looked great but upon eating I discovered that it Was about 85% straight cream cheese. Maybe it was just a bad batch because my companions wings that she ordered with the Sweet chili sauce was "phenomenal" according to her. Overall. Good experience. Staff was attentive and kind. UPDATE: the waitress noticed the cream cheese in spinach artichoke dip and took it off our check! So five stars read more

Ended up here completely by chance for dinner on a Saturday night. After crawling around short north looking for a place to grab dinner without a 40 minute wait, my friend and I stumbled into Macs as a last hope for non fast food dinner. Lucky for us, two tables were leaving at the same time! The atmosphere here is modern and clean. They had plexi glass between the booths for covid safety. Make no mistake, this place was full and more people were rolling in to snag a table but our service was pretty quick and friendly. Mac's is great. I go there all the time with my girlfriend and like to bring friends there too. Mac's stands out in a sea of trendy bars and restaurants crowding high street these days. Go and get yourself some french fries and a sandwich with some beer any day of the week. The food isn't going to win any awards but it is well priced and does taste good overall. The waitstaff is friendly and timely. Sit at the bar and have a nice conversation with the staff if you want to. This is a neighborhood joint, everyone is welcome. I ordered my burger after reading another review suggesting this place served the best burger the writer had ever had. I ordered the burger medium-rare (the waiter agreed that was a good idea), had the sautéed kale, and the Proper Fries. The kale was good and I'd get it again, but for the fact that I'll not go back because the burger was so over-cooked, flavorless, and dry. The bun was good, but the Proper Fries were heat lamp warm and just not worth a fraction of the $8+ I paid for them. Super great experience. The doors were open when all others were closed do to the rain. This was the spot. The "Scotch Eggs" are something to long for; I can clearly see why these are a staple for this joint. Waitress, Emily, was great; she was very accommodating and attentive. I write this review as I'm dining here and having my beer and this red blob what they served as Tomato soup while waiting on my entree (see for yourself ). Let me say, even canned soups are better. I just saw a soup commercial which made me crave for a hearty tomato soup on this cold day. Big craving mistake!! This soup is no better than a can of sweetened tomato puree poured in a bowl, almost ketchup consistency, (what do you think based on the pic?). I hate wasting food and don't wanna send it back, (as it's late-night and only one eating, so afraid it will screw up my remaining order.) That said the bartender is nice & friendly, he recommended beers based on my preference and offered to sample before I ordered it. Thanks to the beer and bar full of empty patrons (it's nearly midnight on a school night), I'll survive!! Only reason I would come back maybe is, they have a decent scotch selection. We love this place! The food is fantastic, the beer is good, and we love the causal (but still nice) feel of the place! Nine times out of ten the service is good too. Our biggest qualm is the cost-- everything from beer to apps to salad are definitely pricey. We would love to make this our regular spot, but can't justify the cost that often. That being said, their happy hour is great! Makes everything reasonably priced; we are far more willing to go more frequently when we can fit happy hour into our schedule. read more

I had to been to Mac's a few times before the remodel and it very much felt like a hole in the wall pub but nothing too special. After going to Mac's this past week, I was really impressed with the renovation, service, atmosphere and overall safety precautions. We stopped at Mac's for Guinness and appetizers. The Guinness was properly poured and the appetizers were perfect pub fare. We ordered the spinach artichoke dip and pretzel bites. The "fries" that came with the dip were thick potato slices and took a typical spinach artichoke dip to the next level. The staff was timely and courteous. I even heard them turn people away because they were at capacity. It was nice to see them taking COVID precautions seriously. The renovation looks great. Mac's is a narrow space but they make the most of it with snug booths and a big open window overlooking the street. The bar area was properly spaced out and had a lot of TVs for watching sports. I recommend Mac's for anyone who wants to watch a game and have a pint in the short north but doesn't want to deal with rowdy crowds or upscale dining. You'll pay a little more for food and drinks because it's the Short North but overall a great pub. read more
