It's a horrible shopping experience. I went to the Macys store and bought a box of perfume in the evening. On my way back, I found a new Macys gift card that I wanted to buy. I asked a cashier downstairs about the minimum to put on the Macys gift card. I collected empty gift card so it made sense to put just the minimum amount and use it up on next purchase. I shopped around and then wanted to pick a new gift card on the shelf near the cashier downstairs and load money upstairs before I leave the store. The parking lot was upstairs. But the cashier insisted on telling me how her manager told her that the minimum was $10 and that the stuff upstairs didn't understand the policy. She walked outside of her desk. I told the cashier exactly four times that I just wanted to go upstairs to buy the card. But she kept telling me this and not responding to what I was saying. I had to end the conversation and pick a new card upstairs. I couldn't take a new gift card on her desk and go upstairs to pay. She was stopping me doing this by keeping saying rubbish. I never have had a bad shopping experience like that. I picked an item in a store but the stuff of the store kept telling me that other stuff of the store didn't understand something. The other cashier upstairs allowed me to put just one dollar on the Macys gift card I wanted to buy at first. But during the processing of the transaction, she received a call from the manager. Then she told me that the minimum of the gift card was $5. I ended the transaction without purchase the gift card after the manager interrupting. The first cashier action was very unprofessional. She was bothering me instead of helping a customer. The manager was also rude to end a dollar transaction. It's Macys and the manager needed to call to instruct a cashier about the gift card minimum? Do the employee training after hour, not by interrupting a transaction under $5. I just paid $80 for perfume using credit card five minutes ago in the store. Macy's does NOT deserve even one star. I have three stories to share, three bad experiences and one of them is dangerous and I am going to leave till the end. The first story: ========== My sister owned a phone number in the past then she transferred it to me on a year ago, she forgot to update her account online. My sister placed an order on May 5th, 2012. I received a call today from macy's that I am expecting "my" order on May 9th!! I was surprised because i didn't place any order, and I did NOT know that my sister placed any order, even we live together. I verified my information with the representative and I told her what's wrong and how come an order was placed under my "name" and I closed my macys card two weeks ago? I am saying under my name because I got a call on my phone. When the rep asked me for the SSN, it didn't match the account number and info, she asked me to stay on hold and she transferred me to another department because there was smthg suspicious. The second rep asked me the same questions to verify my account, she told me that the last 4 digits of my SSN don't match what she has on her account, she asked me about my email address and she said: it doesn't match too. I told her: oh do you think someone is using macys card that my brother in law and me opened at Stanford as joint account then we closed it? She asked me about my brother in law name and I replied.. Then the rep decided that I am representing somebody else!!! And she blocked that account. I told her I didn't say I am (my brother in law's name), when you asked me about my name I gave you my real First and last name, she was very rude accusing me and insisted that I am using somebody's name??? She didn't even allow herself sometimes to investigate or ask questions to understand what the problem is. Moreover, I told her my brother in law is present here right now, would you like to talk to him and verify the information with him and then we can figure out how and who the order was place? We have all macys cards # with us and ready to verify the information... She insisted again I am using somebody's name, then I ended the call, why? Because you are talking to a stupid person, she doesn't want to understand what's the problem, I do believe that we are dealing with credit issues which need a lot of care to prevent fraud., but did that rep bother herself to ask question or even listen to me? Or talk to my brother in law? She didn't want to do that. I believe that her manager may give her a Thank You card because she discovered a prevented a fraud!!!!! A terrible experience around a wonderful occasion. For the holidays I was going to see my niece and her new husband, and wanted to take her a housewarming gift. I decided to clear out her registry, and attempted to purchase the items in store at Hillsdale (San Mateo, CA). As usual, the employees were less than helpful. It took me 10 minutes to find someone to help me, and then they did little more than point me in the direction they thought the items might be in. I couldn't find any of the items, so I ordered everything through the website. One of the items was a frame. The frame was haphazardly thrown into the box with the rest of the items, with no bubble wrap or padding of any kind. Needless to say the item arrived with the glass shattered. I called customer service and asked for a replacement, but because I would not receive the item in time to take with me to the housewarming, I asked that it be sent to the bridal couple at the address listed on their registry. A return label was emailed to me, and I repacked the broken frame and shipped it back to Macy's. Several days later, the frame arrived at my home rather than being shipped to the bridal couple. Extremely angry and frustrated, I called customer service and explained the situation to them. I spoke with Chris who apparently did not feel he could handle the situation, so he transferred me to Melrose in the Bridal Department. Again I explained the situation and asked that another frame be sent to the couple as they live 2 hours from me, and I would not be seeing them anytime soon. Angry at having to waste so much time to rectify the situation, I told her that if she wanted the frame that was mailed to my home, she would have to send someone to pick it up and pack it up, as I was not going to do that. She assured me that that was not necessary, and that she would promptly send out another frame to the address on the registry. She even confirmed the address with me. 10 days later, still no frame. Today, again, I had to call customer service, this time speaking with Cindy. She assured me that it will be delivered before the end of this week. We shall see!!! How much time and effort does a customer have to put into getting a product that they ordered? With such poor customer service, leaving the customer angry and frustrated, it is definitely not worth it to buy anything from Macy's!!! read more

Okay so, I purchased a couple things and used my Macy's card so I kind of forgot to ask for some change for a $1 because I needed quarters to pay for the meter parking in downtown San Mateo. Anyway, I walked up to the handbag counter and asked an associate for change for $1 in quarters. The associate said we can't open register unless you buy something. I'm thinking to my head, as a previous Macy's employee, it's not that hard to open the register and give me change if she really wanted to. She also included that it is for security reason that they could not give me the change. What security? You think my dollar bill is fake?!?!? So I told her that in case you don't know how to open your register, you need to press this and this and this. She blushed like crazy and gave me the dirty look! Just an FYI, I am not asking you to give me change for $100 bill. That, I understand. You asked me to use your Macy's card when I bought something so I did. But I can't get change unless I buy something with cash? Are you crazy? We are talking about $1 dollar here. I will NEVER go back to this Macys! Recently, I shopped in 4 different departments over 2 hours. Clothes are mislabeled and a mess. Every staff member I asked for help either didn't know, or lazily pointed and said, "Over there." or "Do I have to scan ALL of them??" Bad customer service! I felt so descriminated when my girlfriend and I went to buy some dress pants for me (I wear men clothes and yes we are both lesbian). To start off, we were picking out some pants when a representative(mario, older male) approached us asking if we needed help with anything. I told him what I was looking for and looked at me up and down and asked if the pants were for me surprised. Once he helped me find some pants he guided me to the fitting room(which were on the "men's" side). I tried on a few pairs of pants with the help of my girlfriend. In the stall next to us was a woman and a male trying in clothes too. Mario later on approached my gf and told her she couldn't be there, nor me because we were both females in a "male's" fitting room! Let me get this straight, first you GUIDE me in there and then you tell me WE CAN'T be there because we are women?! Hillsdale Macy's gives a bad name to this company. Mostly very unfriendly salespeople, hard to find when you need them. The coupons which comes trough the e-mail never work at Hillsdale Macy's. Went there yesterday to return a piece of jewelry I bought a while ago. Every time I go to Macy's, I am reminded again why I do not like shopping there. There were sals all over the mall but not enough cashiers, so there was a line everywhere. After wasting some 15 minutes just to return the jewelry, I looked around and there was really not much good quality stuff that was worth buying. I did notice a new collection of Jessica Simpson's beach wear near the swimsuit/biniki section downstairs. Although I am not a fan of JS, I found some of her clothing line interesting and sexy. The prices are high though considering this is the teenage section and everything is cheap down here. read more

This Macy's is abominable. It's difficult to find anyone to help you with anything, even paying. Heaven forbid you have a return! Recently, I had a very bad customer experience with Macys that I won't go into. In response, I wrote a long letter to the store manager explaining my dissatisfaction. More than a month later, I have never heard a word back from her. When I inquired to learn the manager's name, the ladies at the "customer service" desk did not even know it--they had to call someone else. Certain areas of the store--e.g. the restroom area and elevator--look like they have not been repaired, upgraded, or given any other attention in 20 years. This mall is busy, and you'd think if this Macys gave proper attention to how its store looks and to customer service, they'd do quite well. As it is, I avoid it like the plague. read more

Well, her name is Tracy. And even though she doesn't specialize in wedding registry, you wouldn't know it (I think she works in housewares). What she does specialize is in Customer service. This amazing woman made me feel like I was the most important person and was genuinely happy to hear I was getting married. She helped me figure out what I needed and what should go on the registry (I'm a bit shy about things like this and feel a bit weird about picking out things that other people are going to buy me). Tracy made me feel like I deserved to have a great registry with some amazing items on it!! Here comes the best part...so while Tracy was entering everything into the system and finalizing the registry, she asked if I wanted to link a gift card to the registry also...I said sure! So I handed her my Macy's card (I was purchasing a few things too that I found on ultimate clearance and I think the card is needed to link everything up too). So, I handed over my card...and low and behold, my card expired?!?! A new policy about if it's been over a year since use...they take it out of the system. No worries...Tracy had it all under control. She made a few phone calls and had to use two computers to make it all happen!!! She's amazing, sweet, smart, kind and caring woman!!! She deserves, at least an award!! I'm sure she has many already, but, I would like to nominate her for an employee of the year!!!!! read more

I actually contacted Macy's Customer Service by phone yesterday after filling out their survey online 4+ times for about 2 months. I was told I needed to fill out the survey. I told the customer service rep I already did and had never been contacted. Then I was directly connected to a manager named Chris for the Hillsdale Macy's. I am not sure what Chris's position is, whether he is the manager of the jewelry counter or the floor. But I explained the situation below to him, told him I wanted Macy's to refund the $35 dollar resizing fee and pay the $10 dollar fee I paid to have the prong fixed. He apologized for the run around and told me that he would be at Macy's until 6:00 pm and he would refund the money to me and pay for the prong fixing. I asked where I would meet him, and he told me to walk upto any jewelry counter and ask for him. I arrived a little after 6:00 pm and walked up to a jewelry counter and the woman said someone else would have to help me. Ugh, not again. Why always someone else? A gentleman walked over to me asked if I needed help and then tried to look for Chris. He asked another jewelry counter rep and another. Then called. Chris wasn't picking up. He got another number and finally was able to connect with Chris. Chris came down and had Cathy refund me the money. Cathy also apologized for the trouble. As I was showing him all the paperwork, he saw that we had contact information for the jeweler that was recommended by Cathy when we could not get the ring fixed directly by Macy's. I told him that that jeweler could not be found at this address and another jewelry counter rep got defensive and said she just contacted him the other day. Ay, yai, yai! I told her we went there and none of his neighbors even knew of him. She replied "He sees people by appointment only." Well, the phone number Cathy gave us didn't work and it would have been great to know that. Anyways, I think she had an issue with the fact I was following up, so she wanted to prove me wrong. Guess what, the address was wrong! In the end I was refunded the money and Macy's paid the price I paid to have the prong fixed. If Macy's was excellent in customer service, which they are not, Chris would have also offered me a Macy's gift card or something else. However, since Macy's is not customer service oriented and didn't care that I went through all that trouble, he didn't. Hence the two stars. read more

I spent FIVE HOURS trying to get a fraudulent charge on my Macy's account reversed with ultimately speaking in person to the manager at Hillsdale Macy's. She tried to greet me with a big smile but ultimately was BEYOND rude. I went to Macys Hilldale Mall because it was closed to my house I went to men department to purchase a shirt for my husband . I went to ask Fragrance department because I saw 2 sales associates there .They enjoy with chatting so much. I asked them if they can ring up because I had only a shirt. A sale old man told me to go cloth department I asked them did they separate from Macys how come he can't ring up. Then he decided to ring up with bad mood then I apologize to bother him. Wow I can't believe that it was terrible service. I gave him a sale how come I must apologize to him. Sale manager should check on sales floor often they should ask commission department help non-commission department too when they had long line. My intention was to purchase two items at the Estée Lauder counter. They had 3 ladies working the counter and One register working. The lady that helped me was either stressed out or almost off work. She gave me one of the two items I needed. The second item was not in stock. She then handed me to her partner who was working with another customer and on a register. I was probably handed over so she can make another sale. Looks like they were low on stock because the person ahead of me had to place an order. Too. Since the wait was taking too long I left. i believe theres 4 stories to this macys. bottom floor is men and kids. no phone service so if you get lost you cant call anyone. not the biggest selection. its not like the macys in nyc or sf. first floor is make up watches jewelry teen girls. upstairs has women clothes. upstairs has bedding and services like wrapping paper. its close and convenient and theres plenty of sales going on all the time. just gotta know exclusions which is pretty much everything. shoes are limited. prefer nordstrom for that. or macys in sf. if you know exactly what you want and they have it, then it cool. doesnt get too crowded. no lacoste and ralph lauren is very limited. izod is always a good find here. plentiful stockage of perfumes and colognes. a smaller macys but easy to navigate around. read more

Macy's has never been my preferred department store. This location is good. Love the handbag/jewelry/accessories department. The men's department here is pretty good as well. They also have a home department at a location down the street. Associates here are friendly and help you figure out how to maximize coupons. This store just feels very cluttered and disorganized in certain departments. The lines here can get long and move slowly. The Serramonte location has more inventory and lines move faster there. read more

Went here with a friend the weekend before Thanksgiving and found that they had a lot of sale deals going on. We ended up getting a coat, a cami, and a pair of denim jean. The first lady who rung us out in the women's clothing register did not use any of my coupons within my Macy's card. Having shopped at Macy's many times before, I was a bit surprised that I had absolutely "no discounts within my card" per the cashier lady. Ignoring that, we went downstairs to the shoes department to look for a pair a boots for my friend. After an entire day's search everywhere else, alas, we found one that was her size and her style. When we took the boots over the the cash register and used my Macy's card again, the employee "Sejal" pulled up a list of coupons within my card and asked me which one I'd like to use. Aha, I KNEW IT. So I asked her if I those coupons would work on my previous purchase from the Women's clothing department and she said, "yes." Kind enough Sejal and her trainer (Jayshree) returned my previous purchase and re-checked us out under the discounts/coupon deals, which allowed me to save an additional $10ish. These 2 employees in the Shoe Department really went out of their way to provide good customer service. A+ ladies. read more

I attempted to return an article of clothing -- nine month girl pajamas. I had the receipt and the barcode on the the pajamas. I am a busy mom of two kids and I thought I'd do this "quick" return errand. It ended up being the most humuliating experience due to the "manage" Chris Penter and the sales associate. They were treating me like I was a criminal because I had paid $13.44 for the article, and they said that the code indicated that the item did not match the receipt and they would only give me $7.00. I had remembered that I purchased it in the men's department while we bought my husband a business suit, and the scanner was not accepting the article, so they scanned an identical item. The manager was not open to listening to this, just getting angry and stating that the tag did not match up with the receipt. During this experience, a line was forming and the sales associate was talking about me to the waiting costumers, saying, "I can't help you yet. This lady did not bring her receipt." I have never felt so humuliated and angry. I am sending letters to higher management and I recommend that you do the same if you've expernienced this kind of humuliation in an economical time when stores' reputations are key. read more

Honestly the only reason I come here is because of the coupons and the fact it is so close to my house. Otherwise, there is no reason to shop here. It's not like they have any exclusives I can't get somewhere else. Speaking of their coupons, I find it highly annoying how they have a long list of exclusions on the back. If they list what's actually included, it'd probably be a shorter list. There is zero customer service, even when you're actually paying for your items (in other words, giving them your hard earned money). And if you have a return, forget it. I bought a pearl necklace during the friends and family sale. I tried to wear the necklace the next day and while I was putting it on, the pearl necklace snaps - like in the middle of the strand. So, after work I go back to return the item. I had to ask three different sales associates before I could find someone to help me. Unacceptable. Makes me never want to shop there again. Unfortunately, I received a pretty substantial gift card for Christmas so I'll have to go back and get something. Maybe I'll visit the Macy's in San Francisco... read more
