Without a doubt the single best calamari I have had maybe ever. It was so good I had it two days in a row. They were so crisp and the batter allowed for the taste to come through. We walked in with our two dogs, without a reservation, and the host was very warm and accommodating. Anna was our server, and very sweet and attentive. The food arrived promptly and the salmon poke was delicious. So was my pasta that was delicious and piping hot. We celebrated a birthday and when Matthew brought our crème brûlée, he sang Happy Birthday, which was very sweet. This is a beautiful restaurant overlooking a gorgeous patio with fire pits. One of my favorite places in the valley. I used to always get the filet mignon which was very tender, flavorful, and reasonably priced for the valley but recently they switched to a wagyu filet mignon. I was excited to try it but it was very chewy and not even close to as tender or flavorful as the filet mignon I've had there for years. Super disappointed with the change. VEGAN EATERS HERE (two of five)......Dinner last night, 12.29.21, early seating, party of five, two of us were vegan. No waiting for our table. A NOTE UPFRONT, glad to notice the owner takes time to responds to most reviews, positive and negative. As someone who knows the restaurant business well, it's a challenging time in a challenging business. I'm glad he cares, I know I do. Comments are meant to be constructive. Keeping it real, service was slow and awkward, having to ask for utensils after plates were brought; the next course would arrive without the previous plates having been cleared, some were even left from beginning to end. Table was messy to the point that companions made comments about it. Server though perfectly pleasant wasn't particularly conversant about ingredients as there were some allergy and preference questions. In all there were three in service of our table at different times and no coordination between them. It was very distracting. Clearly a solvable problem but last night was when we were having dinner there. Food was ok, plant based and omnivorous. Plates looked quite nice though food tended towards overdone and with the vegan dishes, indistinct flavors and mushy textures. Salads in particular were flavorless to the point that salt was being passed to all six of us repeatedly. ** The soba noodle salad was most peculiar as the very name suggests that the noodles were the main ingredient, not the case. They were overcooked, had nothing of the earthy taste of buckwheat and the dressing had no flavor at all.** It was surprising. The greens were fresh. Others had salads with shrimp which were overcooked and tough, again the dressing was flavorless. ** Brussels sprouts were so overcooked you didn't have to chew (?) and too sweet. The flavor was ok, just way too much of it. Fish dish was ordered rare and was not, extra side vegetables were forgotten. Burger bun was not eaten as it was dry, not toasted or warmed, steak was ok. In the vegan bowls, the kabocha squash which is normally toothsome was mushy in both orders, the quinoa soggy and dish was very salty. Peculiar since many other dishes were under salted. No textural counterpoint and disappointing. Ordered several (4) desserts which were better. All in, each of us was disappointed and not sure a return visit will happen soon. Sad to say this as the space is particularly pleasant as is the whole hotel. I don't think any of this is intentional, actually that is probably the issue, the intention just isn't high enough. Happy Hour in the bar was NOT good. We had a party of 4 in for happy hour and it wasn't very busy on a Tuesday night. Apparently the servers don't realize happy hour is for the guests, not the employees. Service was horrible as our group had to wait 25 minutes to order 4 glasses of wine and 3 appetizers. Mind you we had to walk up to the bar multiple times to ask for service as the servers were all bunched up behind the bar. The only reason for 2 stars is that the apps were tasty and the wine, once we got some was tasty, but for 2 apps and 4 glasses of wine, we paid $84. Did I mention the service was crap! Reservations are a must here. There is street parking nearby. The restaurant itself has a cozy feel to it. The staff is extremely friendly, attentive, and accommodating. I can honestly say everything we ordered was beyond delicious. My favorite dish of all had to be the short rib. Melt in your mouth, tender, and savory piece of meat served over a bed of herbed potatoes and an arugula salad dressed with the drippings collected from the short ribs, this dish had my taste buds in heaven. I definitely recommend saving room for dessert as you won't want to miss out on their decedent and rich flourless chocolate cake topped with a sweet raspberry ice cream. read more

Came here for happy hour and was friendly welcomed by Walter who was happy to make his personal recommendations. The happy hour menu was satisfying. I started off with the specialty cocktail lavender gin fizz, and my husband got the blood orange IPA. They provide complimentary corn nuts that is addicting! We ordered the calamari and the cheese plate and they were perfect. The calamari is lightly breaded and flash fried. It was not greasy at all. It was light and scrumptious. There's breaded onions and thin lemon spices that accompanied it. The cheese plate comes with one meat and one cheese. The meat was prosciutto which was delish. It comes with mustard and olives. The cheese was good, nothing extraordinary. The ambience is loungey and contemporary and inviting. Excellent and attentive service. We will be back and love to stay in this hotel! read more

This was my first visit to Mad & Vin. I was visiting Solvang with my two little kids, ages 3 and 4. I had made reservations a few days before and I am glad I did! The atmosphere was so cozy and cute. The staff were all amazing and attentive. They all worked together and were so friendly too! The kids and I had had a busy day of sightseeing and they were pretty tired so it was such an awesome bonus to be seated at a table inside that was a cozy bench on one side and comfortable chairs in the other. They made themselves right at home! I ordered the brussel sprouts appetizer, tomato bisque with fried cheese curds and a beer. The kids shared a grilled cheese and fries. I've been to the bar at Mad and Vin a handful of times, but always really enjoy it! It's such a fun spot to meet up with friends and in an excellent part of Solvang, right off the main street, Mission Drive. It's usually easy to get a table and they have a great selection of cocktails. Most recently, I tried the Gimlet and my husband tried the Skal. Both were SO good! The presentation was beautiful. There is a menu in the cocktail lounge area if you're looking for food too. I've always found the staff to be so friendly and welcoming. read more

The restaurant is located inside a quaint hotel. Since I travel a lot we normally don't dine in hotel restaurants, however Mad and Vin is definitely an exception. The dining room area was spacious and very comfy yet had an upscale and casual vibe. If you have the opportunity to sit In Alejandra's section you will not be disappointed. Her service was impeccable and all of her recommendations were on point. The service team was attentive and very courteous. The food here is great! My Favorite part was the olives and nuts. I couldn't get enough of the nuts and differently recommend them. The cheese crudes reminded me of mozzarella sticks and turned out to be a good appetizer (but it's a bit pricey for what it is). Situated inside of the Landsby Hotel, they have a wonderful patio for outdoor dining during Covid. Warmers, covered areas, and a fire pit that makes it very comfortable. Even on the 40 degree night I visited. You enter through the front of the hotel which can be a bit confusing when you see past the hotel to the patio in the back and can easily think you're meant to go there. Once in the hotel, there is a small stand with hostess waiting to seat tables. Walking through the indoor dining area was very nice and I hope to return when there are no longer restrictions on indoor dining. Started with the cheese plate and Pear Drop martini. Both were great. Followed with the short rib. It was smothered in a melted burrata and I can't tell you how amazing this was. I would visit again and again just for the short rib. The other entree ordered was the Ribeye. It was cooked per request so no complaints there but I have to say that with all of the amazing steak restaurants in our area, I really expected more. It wasn't a bad steak but it wasn't a great steak. 3.5 out of 5 on that. Finished with a pumpkin bread pudding, again, very good. I would suggest sharing this one. In addition to to the great food, service was excellent. Will definitely be returning. So happy to have this place close to home. read more

After driving through LA traffic and being in the car for about 4ish hours, we were ready to eat and of course, drink! The waitress was very informative on what to try and the food here is really good! She also brought out lightly toasted pita covered in sesames and red pepper hummus for the table. Here's the dish: * Brussels sprouts to start - caramelized to a nice texture and candied to a perfect sweetness. I was astonished that I was eating a vegetable. * Greens plate - because you can't ever have enough veggies with your meal. Came with asparagus, avocado, green beans, broccoli * Market fish - sea bass tonight and it was the best dish. Highly recommend! The creamy farro that it came with was to die for. * Short rib (special) - fall of the bone tender. Full of flavor and cooked perfectly. We ordered a couple bottles of wine! The food was nice and hot and stayed hot even though we were sitting outside. Perfectly cooked and incredible flavors! Modern bistro in a swanky, posh inn (The Landsby). Hopping bar next door, almost too hopping. The welcome was not great, kinda rude, I'm busy, I'll llook up when I want to. The restaurant is nice but not as nice as the lobby at the inn. The menu is not terribly broad so check it before you come in. I'd say this is high-end bar food meets good American restaurant food. For example, they have fried macaroni and cheese balls as an appetizer (which were good). The pork belly started was lightly fried which was kind of odd, but it tasted good, especially as finger food in little nuggets. The ceviche was very good. The mains were all excellent: short-rib, king salmon, and I had what I believe was the best Cioppino I have ever eaten. The bread pudding was amazing almost despite the marshmallow topping. So highly recommend, but just make sure you know what you're signing up for as I found the whole scene somewhat unusual and surprising, a bit of LA dropped in Solvang. read more

Great service, great decor. The tables are nicely spaced and it was never crowded. I think there are a few tables for outside seating if you want. The high Yelp rating for this restaurant is accurate and not just high because of the limited options in the area (which I've found to be true for a lot of places out here). The pork tomahawk was a thick cut, and done well, juicy, not over cooked inside with a nice sear outside. The sides were basic but the stone fruit chutney on top was perfect. Not too sweet, good texture and not mushy, it complimented the pork well. It was a group fav out of everything we ordered. The flatiron was cooked well too. The creamy mushroom bucatini was delicious. The cioppino was full of flavor and seafood. The fried calamari had a light batter and I loved the bits of fried lemon slices and peppers and onions. It added interesting variety to a dish that's usually one note. The castelvetranos olives were very good, not too briney, buttery, and fruity. The restaurant is inside a hotel, nicely decorated over all, calm and relaxing, modern but still warm. The bathrooms were also great and they used a lovely air freshener :) read more
