Never fails. I ride my bike to the island to watch the sun rise on the beach, and hustle my sandy butt over to Martha's for coffee, a chat, and a newspaper read after the fact. Every single time, I leave with a euphoric feeling like I visited some mystical island in my dreams and am sadly mistaken to realize I'm still in New England. *sigh* It's still the best kept secret on PI. I have been going to Plum Island for many years, since I was a young lad, and it's actually only within the last 2 years that I started going to Mad Martha's. What a nice, though much belated discovery! They are perfectly situated off the main road, and you can either sit inside, or they have a few nice picnic tables outside. I had the corned beef hash the two times that I went. It's served with eggs and horseradish on english muffin! Absolutely delicious! They also have a nice Mickey Mouse pancake that kids enjoy a lot! You'll find that early in the morning it's quite busy, but things roll pretty fast so I never had to wait very long. Check it out! Delicious! read more

I do not remotely understand all the 5-star reviews. While we waited to be seated we watched a member of the staff dump a bunch of rain water in the outside coffee station while refilling with coffee. So the level of poor standards was noted before we even sat to eat. Needless to say neither of us had any coffee. The waffle I had was the worst ever. The texture was weird and flavor even stranger. Seemed like it was corn bread almost. It was also burnt in spots and no matter how much syrup I put on it to cover the flavor, I ended up not eating very much of it. My husband's egg sandwich was both under cooked and burnt. Home fries were just so completely burnt that even the spots that didn't look burned tasted burnt. And we're not even sure that the egg was cooked at all. If you're OK with questionable sanitation and poorly cooked food, then this is the place for you. Overall the staff was friendly and we didn't wait that long considering our large party size for such a small place. read more

I had been hearing nothing but great things about Mad Martha's for so long. A visit here was long overdue! Everything was absolutely perfect. This is what a great dining experience is all about! Cute atmosphere, amazingly sweet & friendly staff, and incredibly delicious food. The Corned Beef Hash was cooked to perfection and came with this incredible Horseradish Aioli drizzle over the top. A great pit stop after duck hunting - it's become a tradition. Mad Martha's is small, and has a sort of earthy feel... It seems like the restaurant was once a cottage, which was converted into an eatery, and then decorated/painted by the same folks who exclusively do daycares, kindergartens, and independent book stores - and I mean that in the best way possible. It's eclectic and crunchy without being full San Francisco. The food varies between traditional New England diner fare and certified whole wheat Cambridge hipster chow. The unifying factor seems to be freshness, limited ingredients, and excellent overall quality. If you want a plate of greasy eggs, homefries, hash and bacon with black coffee and OJ, you can have it. If you'd prefer some sort of spicy burrito creation slathered in avocado and hot sauce served with coconut rice, well, they have that sort of thing too. I won't begrudge them the theft of the name (a rather famous ice cream seller on Martha's Vineyard may have staked their flag before you, guys) but if I had one legitimate complaint, it would be the portion sizes, which tend to be a bit smaller than similar breakfast/lunch joints. A totally illegitimate complaint would be the limited seating and parking - what can they do? Overall, worth the visit. read more

My husband and I enjoyed an amazing breakfast this morning and it really was perfection! We both had the specials and wow were they good. The setting is so wonderful and the service is excellent and add to that the most delicious food and it's really just the best breakfast around. I had the Special Bowl (Sausage, veggies, eggs, beans, potatoes, cheese and other goodies) and my husband enjoyed the Muffwich (sausage, egg, cheese sandwich on an amazing grilled large corn muffin with honey and sriracha). Best breakfast in town! This place is SO adorable and cozy, and the waitstaff are pleasant and accommodating. There's free coffee to enjoy while you wait and the breakfast choices are out of the world delicious. It's BYOB! So you can bring a bottle of vodka for bloody Mary's or a bottle of champagne for mimosas. Omelettes, homefries, muffins, and sweet Portuguese bread are delicious and their fruit bowls are so lovely - kiwi, papaya, raspberries, etc - all the goods! Highly recommend. Parking is much easier since the town added 30 min restaurant parking signs outside. I love this place! read more

Best breakfast place in the area hands down. Parking is somewhat difficult but I understand if you are there early in the morning you can park along the road in resident parking but not for an extended period of time. Get there before 8am if you don't want to wait in a long line. Kitchen is right there in front of you and visible and food comes quick and hot. Service was great and food is absolutely amazing. Yummmy! Mad Martha's is a tradition now for our family. We went twice last week. One weekday we sat inside for breakfast with 5 of us and then outside on Saturday at "lunch" with 8 of us on the big picnic table. Banana French toast is the best thing on the menu. If you go on the weekend you should expect a long wait so we recommend you go early or late. Mid morning there was more than 20 people waiting outside. Love this place. Great beach vibe. Great staff. There's hardly any parking so plan ahead by walking or biking there to save the hassle of finding parking. read more

I really like this place! As many have said the young ladies that run the cafe are very friendly and welcoming, Seriously they have that outside of Boston Proper thing going on. You're on a island and things are a tad slower, a lot kinder, a lot more friendly. Enjoy it. We went a few times during the week - watch out for those 15th & 30th days of the month though, those old folks will cut you for their regular seats. So what does an old man like me get for breakfast at Mad Martha's? The Old Man Omelet that's what! Filled with ham, onions, mushrooms and jack - awesome with their homemade corned beef hash. If my old bones had rolled out of bed earlier I could have had their breakfast sandwich special with coffee for $5 before 8am, but that life on the beach. I had their chicken teriyaki & rice roll up for lunch one day - very filling and so good. Parking is on the street, not bad off season but I'm not sure about the summer months, in the winter you can take a short stroll on the beach right in front, there's public parking about a quarter mile away on Northern Ave if things are busy. This from their website "our infamous BLOODY MARY BUCKETS have arrived. Bring your own spirits and we will provide the rest" for Sunday brunch, how bad can it be? Just beyond the sand dunes is a tiny, cottage cafe attracting humble playwrights, poets, surfers, IT engineers, clairvoyants, self help authors, young, old, locals, travelers, beach goers, cyclists. This alone deserves 5 stars. I'd return just to bathe my brain in their eclectic companies. If only their Portuguese influenced menu (sweet bread, linguicia) were better than mediocre. I was excited about being offered baked beans for breakfast with crab cakes, but disappointed by their out of the can and bread laden flavors. I'd like to lend them Uncle Morty's culinary skills for 1/2 a day. He could teach them how to offer an affordable breakfast without compromising flavor or quality. Awh! This place is the exact place I'd want to eat at while on vacation at a beach house. Super cute, super friendly and awesome food. We went on Memorial Day at like 9 am. It's a small place, and seating is first come first serve so there was a line outside. After walking in, we found 2 seats at the counter (which I guess no one else wanted) so we were able to sit quick. The next 25 minutes would have left my fiance and I impatient and bored anywhere else. Instead, we had our hot chocolate and got to talk to each other while we watched all the activity in the kitchen. Staff was super nice and regardless of only one waitress on duty for the morning, she was energetic with a huge smile on her face and always got whatever we needed immediately. Our Caramelized Banana French Toast came, with our side of sweet bread and potatoes... oh yeah, it was gone in minutes. We only came up for the day, but I am looking forward to coming back and trying more kick ass food!! read more

The thing you need to understand about Mad Martha's is it constantly changes hands, but each hand stays long enough to make the place their own and to keep a steady rush of new and old customers. (The short history is MM began with someone who *was* named Martha and shared cafe duties with a Pat, then they turned the duties to Brad and Greg, who in turn gave the keys to current general manager Kendall and chef Kyree.) Now that you understand the background, many old standbys from prior owners' menus remain intact, such as caramelized banana french toast (which is delicious) to Portuguese muffins, known more commonly as Bolo Levedos (which are far sweeter than the name implies). But there are also new menu items, such as an egg omelet called the State Street (apple chicken sausage, spinach, artichoke, and feta) and a scrambled egg mix named after a local attorney called Legal Eggs (and to tell you its ingredients would be committing a felony!). Chef Kyree is also willing to concoct new menu items on the fly, if and when customers ask for them. Today, for instance, I asked for Heather's Homies (hash browns with cheese, named after Kendall's vegetarian friend) combined with meatballs. Kyree thought about it for a moment, wondering how it might taste, and cooked it. I've eaten at the Friendly Toast in Portsmouth which other yelpers suggest be emulated, but FT chefs rarely customize dishes to that extent. Check it out. Go for the food, for sure, but also for the service. read more

Wow! My wife and I were looking for a place to have breakfast today and came here based on the yelp reviews. Beautiful picturesque drive from Newburyport to Plum Island and were able to find a spot across the road. Restaurant looks like a normal beach house, so make sure to keep your eyes open. Also, it's off season, so not sure how parking would be in season or on a weekend. We were greeted warmly when we entered and found a nice table for two. Service was great from start to finish. We ordered eggs Benedict and a Cuban omelette both with home fries and sweet toast. Food was fresh and tasty. Portion size was more than enough and cost was not very expensive. If you find yourself in the area make sure to try this hidden gem. read more

This place is better than ever. It may sometimes be hard to get a seat, but the only fault is that their food is so good, so everyone wants to come. The owners, Kendall and Kyree, as well as the rest of their wait staff, are great people, and make you feel very welcome. They always give personalized service, and pay special attention to the kids. Was so ecstatic to receive Mad Martha's gift certificates for Christmas last year, and we had been waiting to use them on a special occasion. We finally went out and had another great breakfast for my wife's birthday. Ended up having Elvis French Toast (French Toast with bacon, peanut butter, and bananas). YUM!! Best. Breakfast Place. I can't even review the food. After reading great reviews we were happy to wait the 30 minutes for a table. Unfortunately, after placing our order and waiting another 30 minutes for scrambled eggs we finally left. My husband's coffee was cold and no one ever can to top it off. We will never go back. This cafe is kind of out of the way on Plum Island, which I suppose is a good thing for the regulars. If it was in town, you could never get a table. This place offers the best breakfast that I have had in this area and probably on my top 5 list of all times. I went on a cloudy Saturday morning, so beach traffic was light out on the Island, so we were able to sit right away. I had one of their signature dishses, with poached eggs, carmelized onions and smoked salmon and it was simply delicious. The service was great. Very upbeat and friendly. We enjoyed our food so much that we ordered takeout the next day and picked it up on our way to the beach. The place is not huge, so I would suggest you go early or practice your patience. Awesome spot for brunch! A man next to our table was celebrating a birthday, when the waitress brought out his omelette (with two burning bday candles), she started to sing happy birthday to him and then we all (everyone in the place) sang to him. Felt like a movie. Down to earth people work here, cute ambiance and excellent food (the small portion size and seasoning of the homefries was the only downfall)! Not bad on the wallet either. We were lucky to get there at 7 sharp when they opened, as the place filled up within minutes. Cute, clean, good service and wonderful food. We had breakfast burritos, an omelet, and the special. Decided to try somewhere new on a gorgeous Sunday for brunch. Very small but quaint restaurant, we had about a 20 minute wait around 11am. We hadn't realized but you can BYOB for those mimosas! We did specials of the day which was open faced English muffin with sausage , spinach, caramelized onions, horseradish aioli and homefries, also had homemade hash and Portuguese French toast with strawberries on the side to split . The sandwich was huge, the horseradish was okay and the hash was awesome. The French toast spectacular, and our eyes were bigger than our bellies! I had breakfast there twice in one week. The first time I had the egg scramble special - carmelized onions, blue cheese, and bacon - really awesome and delicious. It is served with homefires (nothing special here) and this sweet-ish bread. The second time I had the black bean omelet which was pretty bland.
