I went to grab some lunch at Madea's today. I had been once years ago but was in the mood today for some soul food and decided to try it out again. I'm 6 months pregnant and my baby was kicking me as soon as I walked in and smelled all the food. I was greeted by several employees upon entry and was served very quickly. I got the chicken tetrazzini, Mac and cheese, green beans, and broccoli rice casserole. Everything was steaming hot when they served it to me. I also got a carrot cake and German chocolate cake to go. All of my food was delicious and fresh tasting but the carrot cake was by far my favorite thing. It reminded me of my childhood. It tasted so similar to the Pepperidge farm style carrot cake that's been discontinued for years. I have had enough food for leftovers for dinner. This is the best soul food I have ever eaten in my life. I once had a friend who made greens as good as the ones here and I've searched for that taste again relentlessly. Here, I found it. The hot water cornbread tastes like heaven. Peach cobbler? Life changing. I've never had fried pork chops that taste like that and idk what they put in the macaroni and cheese but I can't even make it taste that good and that's one of my favorite things to cook. The chef is so beyond friendly and helpful. Everyone is kind, the service is impeccable. Prices may seem high but there's enough food on one of those plates to feed you three dang times. My husband and I have purchased there for many years and they gave enough food to eat two meals which was a good thing since the food is so pricey. Just recently they've started putting all the sides into little 1/2 cup containers. I guess they're saving money that way but the prices remain the same. One thing I hate is a stingy restaurant especially when you're paying $20 or more for a meal. The oxtails are a whooping $30! You can easily spend $100 dollars for 4 meals. Another thing I've noticed is they're not seasoning the food very well at all. You won't notice pepper on the cabbage or greens or the ox tails. We all know that the seasoning is what makes the food soul food. We're trying another new restaurant located on Altamesa. Her food is highly seasoned and it's good!!! What was delivered was greens, mac and cheese, and two orders of corn. The macaroni wasn't' the best, and to make it worst the corn was unseasoned (both servings). There is a food line, cafeteria style, whatever you want to call it... I can tell you that almost everything on it is good. I say almost because I don't eat pork chops and they are the line. But the rice, yams, beans, potatoes, etc..... are all delicious AND hot and fresh! There is seating and depending on what time you get there, you could be out of luck! The food and drinks are all good. The service is really good considering some food is cooked to order. The service is great as well. I love the lady at the front of the line. She can fix your plate, get your made to order food going at the same time, write down the proper name and never miss a beat!!! The entire team is nice and respectful... Oh my goodness. We found this place on google maps and mingled we did. Madea's will not disappoint you. One plate is enough food to feed 2-3 people. Portion size is huge. When we walked in everyone was nice with light background music playing. Atmosphere is excellent. Everyone was very helpful while taking our order. My wife got the oxtail plate with 3 side and I had the fried catfish with 3 sides. I think it was way too much food for one person to eat. I also ordered a pecan pie slice and peach cobbler. Cobbler came out warm and delicious. Pecan pie was most and awesome. If you have tried this place you really should. We will come back here every time we're in this part of Texas. read more

On Memorial Day weekend, the babe and I decided to roll down to Dallas and visit his family. My brother in law, a master on the grill, lured us down to Dallas for some good ole BBQ. The traffic was great, the weather was amazing and while he warmed up the grill, we decided to indulge in some food that didn't take four to five hours to baste and smoke to finish. I was in the mood for some Jamaican food and he was in the mood for some Soul food, so we Yelped the closest eateries and Madea's was our Number 1 choice. We ordered ahead since the restaurant was about to close and the family wanted to add in their orders. We decided on an order of oxtails, chicken fried steak, smothered pork chops and I ordered an order of chicken and dumplings. All orders were served with 2 side orders and we had various options from macaroni and cheese, broccoli and cheese, yams, gravy and collard greens. The restaurant was about 15 minutes away from his brother's home and the food was prepared when we arrived. We were greeted warmly by the staff and I was provided a refund as my chicken and dumplings were not on the menu that day. The restaurant was full of hungry diners and I realized that while the restaurant was within minutes of closing, those diners were not leaving anytime soon. The atmosphere was jovial, the smells invigorating and the food portions a decent size. Madea's earned my four star rating because the food was great, but being a thoroughbred Southern gal myself from Charleston, SC, the food didn't reach all my expectations. I'll say it was great, but my Granny's macaroni and cheese and smothered pork chops haven't been beat and still receives my 5 Stars. I have been a customer for years, but I'm concerned after my last few visits. My primary concerns are slow service, even with call-in orders, inconsistency in the taste of the food and lack of process/service improvement. SLOW SERVICE On Jan. 28, 2023, I placed my order over the phone and paid for it. I arrived when I was told it would be ready. However, I got there and still had to wait an hour before I got my food. The cashier did not apologize, but fortunately one of the servers did and he gave me a free slice of cake for my trouble. This visit was troubling because there were many senior citizens who had to go through the same thing I experienced today. DO BETTER MADEA'S. Value our time and treat your customers with respect. After God, we are the reason why you are thriving, don't forget that. INCONSISTENT WITH TASTE OF FOOD I always buy extra orders of the hot water cornbread because it use to be good. Not today. It was thick, mealy and not edible. Not sure if you changed the recipe for the collard greens or if we just got a bad batch, but they were peppery and we could not eat them. The mashed potatoes were lumpy and the smothered pork chops were tough. LACK OF CONTINUOUS PROCESS/SERVICE IMPROVEMENT Considering a large portion of your business is take out, it would be in your best interest to create a streamlined process to get take out orders in and out in a timely fashion. Especially since customers have to pay for the orders over the phone. Also, include signage for takeout orders otherwise new visitors will not know they can go to the front of the line to get their orders. Instead they will wait in the long line. I hope management/owners at Madea's will read this review. I want to continue to support the business because I know what you can be. However, I will not continue to patronize any establishment that does not value and respect me, my time or my money. Giving you three stars because I know what you use to be. For being an out of towner, I'd say this soul food spot is located in an unusual area in the middle of nowhere. There is a good size parking lot along the east side of the building and it was nearly full when I arrived. Entrees range from 9.25 (veggie plate) to 20.50 (oxtails). Most entrees are around 12-13 though, and that comes with 3 sides and a roll or cornbread. Easily enough food to fill most people, or a small group. The famous banana pudding is only available on sundays. I visited on a Friday during an off time, but there was still a line nearly to the door. Most everyone gets their food to go, but they do have a good size dining room. CFS - solid, thick, deep fried, lots of crunchy, tasty bits of breading, white gravy was room temp (3.5) Mac n cheese - cheese sauce was thin, sprinkled with black pepper, tasted similar to boxed, slightly better, no cheese on top (3) Cabbage - hot, excellent, made with diced red peppers not bacon (4) Collard greens - cooked to death, burnt taste, has shreds of beef mixed in (1.5) Cornbread - more like a corn fritter, irregular shaped, not sweet (3) German chocolate cake - homemade, delicious, moist (4) I liked how they try to get a head start on preparing your fried items (CFS, CFC, Fried catfish), so you dont have that long to wait, by the time you reach the register. Customer service was friendly as well as other customers I interacted with on the serving line and dining room. I left satisfied, full, and very comforted like somebody just cuddled me in their arms warmly while I work my way on eating the tray full of food. They close early on the day I came to visit(Sunday) and it's the first day they are back from their winter break. The line moved somewhat quickly and most of the orders are Togo. My smothered pork chop is to die for and the side I've chosen are very good! The portions are huge (good for 2 maybe 3 people). Less than $15 could make up for two decent size meal.
