This was probably one of the most disappointing brunch experiences. The sandwiches were something that anyone could easily make at home, from the quality of the bread to the content of the sandwich. They were served on a plate, not the tower, they were large rectangular plain sandwiches. Same bread type was used for all four types. Cucumber sandwich was primarily cream cheese, the others were dry, like they were sitting out for a while. I am not sure if the reason for a port experience was the late sitting, the weekday or chef's day off, but definitely was very disappointing, considering the price tag for the whole experience. read more

On Sand Hill Road. One Michelin star. The menu isn't particularly innovative. They're not taking any risks - truly ironic for a restaurant on Sand Hill Road. A very traditional omelette with no esoteric ingredients, yuzu, microgreens, or herbs whatsoever. I was bored as soon as I saw the brunch menu. I got the California omelette and it was just like any other omelette anywhere. It was kind of watery - it needed to be cooked more to make it well done. The menu said that it had kale in it but mine came with spinach, which is fine. It typically has three eggs in it... that's way too many eggs for me. I try to go easy on the animal products and the portion sizes, so I requested a two-egg omelette instead of three. I was hoping that it would have lots of veggies in it but nope - it was mostly eggs and just a few vegetables. A marginal breakfast at best. I far prefer Blue Stone Cafe in Los Altos - lots of veggies, nuts, and quinoa topped with one egg is the way I like my breakfast. You're paying for the location and the great views. The service was good, however the cleanliness left a lot to be desired (stains on the water glass and food stuck on the check). My fourteenth star. Slowly making my way up to my target star goal. It's going to take at least a decade but I'm pacing myself, so that I meet my annual Michelin star goal for 2021. Boyfriend and I came here for our 2nd year anniversary. He was the one who picked this place after I gave him a long list of contenders I compiled from Yelp, and said it was because of the reviews, the portions of the food from the photos we saw on Yelp, and the overall vibe of the place. I booked us a reservation about 3 weeks in advance on OpenTable. When we arrived after about a 40-minute drive, our expectations were met, and also much more than that as well! We were 15 minutes late from our original reservation of 6:15, and on the drive to Madera, I gave them a call, and they quickly modified my reservation to 6:30, no questions asked, no hassle at all! Once we arrived, and gave them my name, they instantly seated us. The waitstaff was incredibly gracious with seating us, offering to take our coats, bringing us our menu, bringing us our water, etc. We were impressed that even on the menu, "Happy Anniversary" was printed for us. What a kind gesture! We started off with a glass of wine for each of us. Boyfriend had Terrebrune Rose, and I had the Poppy Pinot Noir. Everything on the menu looked excellent. For starter, we picked the Squid Ink Tagliatelle, which included Kohlrabi, Dungeness Crab, Trout Roe, and Uni Butter. It looked like the most appetizing item on the menu, as neither of us like foie gras, and I currently can't eat red meat, so sadly, no wagyu for us. The tagliatelle was delicious, and reminded me of kelp noodles. Along with complimentary bread and butter, we also received small little cups of what seemed to be beef broth with cilantro. We experimented with dipping our bread into the broth, and it tasted wonderful with the bread, much preferable over the butter. It reminded us of pho beef broth, especially with the strong cilantro taste. The mains were AMAZING. Liberty Farms Duck Breast and King Salmon were the two that caught our eye, and they were so worth it. The duck came with a leg confit, sun chokes, pearl onions, and elderberry. The salmon came with smoked shoyu sabayon, bonito, wild onion, and turnips. The duck was juicy with crispy skin, and wasn't greasy as all. I will judge a restaurant by the quality of their duck because growing up eating Peking Duck on special occasions with the family, duck quality will be scrutinized. Madera did a very impressive job with the duck, and I savored every bite of it. The salmon was heavenly and buttery! It melted in our mouths, it was incredibly tender, and the skin had a tasty, satisfying crunch to it. The turnips, wild onions, bonito, and the mustard-like sauce that went with it enhanced the flavor and taste perfectly. We saw the couple next to us order desserts, and we knew that we wanted to look at the dessert menu right after our main course. The waitstaff brought it out right away. We chose the Citrus Cheese Cake and the Chocolate Earl Grey. Even the desserts were not to be missed. The Citrus Cheesecake, which also had orange jam, grapefruit jelly, and oro blanco sorbet, are the best-tasting cake pops I've ever had. The Chocolate Earl Grey looked like a work of art. It was absolutely beautiful to look at, especially with the burnt sugar that looked like lace adorning the dessert. It came with blackberry curd, gianduja cremeux, and puffed rice crunch. The rice crunch was my favorite part of the dessert, especially since I could really taste the rich earl grey flavor when I bit into it. We even received a complimentary strawberry and white chocolate cake with a white chocolate oval enscribed with "Happy Anniversary." What a sweet complimentary treat! We were even surprised that after we signed our checks, they brought us two more little square cakes that looked like small cheesecake cubes. Not sure what these were for, since we already received the complimentary anniversary cake, but this was very kind of them to bring us as well. In addition to the food, everything else about Madera was impressive. Our water cups were constantly refilled, which is so appreciated, especially since we both wanted to stay hydrated and sober while drinking wine. Every time we went to the restroom, the waiters would also fold our napkins for us and place it back onto the table. When I first returned to my table from the restroom (which is right outside the entrance of the restaurant and to the right), the kind hostesses at the front desk showered me with compliments on my dress, which was very flattering. It was also a very cold evening, as it had been raining and hailing on and off all day. But inside, the restaurant was very warm, complete with a beautiful fireplace, which we thankfully sat close to. For a total of $170.74 on the bill (not including tip, we tipped them 20% for the fantastic service and experience), this really was worth every penny! I made an online reservation to meet friends for lunch. So I take my car and arrived at Madera restaurant at the Rosewood Hotel Menlo Park and the valet instructs me to park my car in a parking space right in front of the restaurant, which I was thankful for his help. A friend arrived and was also instructed to park his car next to me. After lunch. As we were leaving from the restaurant. Saying our goodbyes. We decided to take advantage of the opportunity that these two beautiful cars were parked together. So we decided to take pictures. A minute into taking pictures another valet named John approached us very rudely without saying hello, no introduction and visibly upset said "Stop taking pictures immediately and shut your car doors!" Confused because we were still parked in the space provided and yes the doors were opened but since the doors swing up in the open position it was out of the way of any oncoming traffic. We informed him that we were the owners and it is ok to take pictures of our own cars. His response was "I'm only relaying the message from management."We then went to the front desk and talked to the manager of the Rosewood Hotel and she said "You need approval from the sales department before taking pictures on hotel property." I see a bunch of photos here on Yelp and other sites from customers visiting the Rosewood Hotel, eating at Madera restaurant, photos of exotic cars in the parking lot, etc. Did they all get approval from the sales department before taking pictures? The overall experience that my date and I had was nothing short from what you would expect from a Michelin starred restaurant. The ambiance was elegant, the staff was prompt, professional, and kind, and the food was outstanding. We had the flat iron steak, which was perfectly cooked to a medium rare and was served with perfectly cooked fries and the best tasting arugula we've ever had. The greens did not appear to have any sort of dressing, but literally complimented the steak perfectly. It was a symphony. As we entered, the place was empty, we were taken along the hall to a dark corner in the dining room. We asked if we could sit outside, or a brighter place by the windows? Torn between giving Madera three stars or four stars. Come here expecting to drop some $$$. It's a beautiful restaurant, located in the Rosewood Hotel, with spectacular views. Versatile spot that's great for client dinners, family get-togethers, date nights, and brunches. There's a spacious inside area as well as patio area. Recommend sitting outside if the weather is nice but not too hot, as it can get overly hot in the summer months. There's also a bar right next to the restaurant that apparently gets packed on weekend nights. Recently came here for brunch on Saturday (NOTE: brunch menu only served on Sunday), but this is also a gorgeous spot to enjoy dinner during sunset. For brunch, we shared the following: Chilled sweet corn soup - presentation was impeccable. The mixture of jalapeno jam and cilantro was served on the bottom of the bowl. The actual soup was brought out separately, and poured into the bowl once brought out to the table. Super creamy, with a complex mixture of flavors. Great summer dish. Baby kale caesar salad - served with real anchovies that were pretty meaty, along with croutons and shaved parmesan. Subbed the caesar dressing for a vinaigrette, and enjoyed the lighter appetizer before moving on to our heavier mains. Burger - served with a super thick patty, the burger was hearty and delicious. It was piled high with white cheddar, bacon, lettuce, and tomatoes. French fries that came on the side were very mediocre and not that crispy. They serve Sir Kensington's condiments here. Whole roasted trout - this dish bumped this place up to four stars for me. Definitely pricey at $48, but it can easily feed 2 (or probably more if you eat less). It's cooked in brown butter with sherry, green onions, and fennel. SO GOOD. Highly recommend if you like fish. The fish was light but the dish was decadent and extremely flavorful and had an amazing salty-sweet juxtaposition. Trout tasted so fresh. The middle of the fish was layered with a pesto that added additional flavor and texture to the overall dish. Fennel and green onions added the perfect crunch to each bite. Madera is a beautiful, elegant restaurant inside the Rosewood Hotel on Sand Hill Road. We had a really nice meal there with a friend and definitely enjoyed ourselves. The grilled octopus appetizer was definitely the highlight of the evening - probably the best octopus I've ever had. So tender and delicious! My friend and I both had the Sonoma rabbit, a really delicate, homey dish with house made pasta. My husband had the scallops, and while he said those were perfectly cooked, he didn't like the accompaniments, too fancy without any taste. The wine list is massive and a bit intimidating - the sommelier came over but frankly wasn't really that helpful in narrowing down the list. We pretty much picked what we liked - an Italian Brunello - once we got to that he helped choose but I would have appreciated some other suggestions. This is a Michelin-starred chef, so we had expectations of absolute perfection, thus four out of five stars. But we did have a great time and the place is warm and inviting without being too snotty, so it is worth a visit for a nice evening out. read more

Madera is a good 3-4 star place, I put it 3 instead of 4 because there were some issues that I don't think an establishment of this caliber should have. My mum took me here for brunch after picking me up from the airport. We ordered the benedict and the persimmon salad. Both dishes were packed with flavor but small portioned. Places that are this fancy usually have this size portion so that was fine. The persimmon salad was bright and colorful, which just made me enjoy with my eyes before my tongue. What makes a benedict is the sauce and this one did not disappoint. The issues I had with this place was not the food but with the server and plate, I received. It's not a deal-breaker but the plate had some food particles on it. Our server did a great job but spoke very softly that we could not understand them too well. I think the server's knowledge of the menu and wine was great but they could have just said anything softly and I would have just said 'ahhh' or 'thanks' to be polite. Great decor and a wonderful patio view. Might go back someday but there are a lot of great options around and I'm not trying to eat with a dirty plate. read more

After 23 visits over nine years, I was shocked to see that I have yet review Madera. Among Michelin starred restaurants in the Bay Area, Madera may not be at the very top, but they provide a consistently delightful culinary experience for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Their dishes rarely disappoint and often transcend. They aren't as refined as other Michelin-starred restaurants, but their dishes are often stronger in flavor, saucier and more delightful. Their staple trick seems to accompanying many of their dishes with dollops of dense and delicious sauces and relying a little more on sweetness in their savory dishes. The end result are dishes that pack a lot of different flavors on each plate and an ever rotating menu that rewards each return visit. The restaurant is a sight to behold with great views of the foothills and Interstate 280. While it probably has the fanciest parking lot in silicon valley (with many obscure fancy cars) with so many VC firms near by, it has a certain-type of casual and airy feel (fancy resort casual, not TGIF casual). The grounds are beautiful, the staff is great and it's definitely the best high-end lunch destination south of San Francisco. read more

If I could give them 6 stars I would. This past Tuesday my wife and I had dinner at Madera for a big milestone birthday for the wife. It was an important night and they went out of their way to make it special. Service and hospitality - to start off, I accidentally booked the Tuesday prior and so when we showed up we didn't have a table. When the hostess realized what we were celebrating and the mistake I had made she was not only kind enough to get us a nice table overlooking the pool but also made sure to refund the cancellation fee I had paid (which I wasn't even aware of). The manager Oliver was kind, professional and also went out of his way to make us feel like we were family celebrating a special night. Our server had a couple hiccups but again, was incredibly professional and the staff was all around fantastic. Ambiance - we sat outside but the restaurant and bar area have a nice feel and decor. We had a drink after dinner at the bar and the drinks are great. Only knock is the bar area can get pretty crowded but that's just a byproduct of it being a popular spot. Food & Drink - food was fantastic. Highlights were the deviled eggs which we paired with a glass of Rose. The watermelon and tomato salad was great as well and the lamb chops were easily the best dish of the night. Had the crispy potatoes as well which were OK but nothing to write home about. Can't remember the cocktail we had but it was a martini type drink with a lemon peel in it. Was yummy and STRONG. One and done if you're a light drinker. This is my second time here and the food is definitely more memorable this time than my last visit. Everything is well made. I don't care for the asparagus salad but the whole fish and salmon tartare are definitely my favorite. In fact, I've never seen a while fish on the dining table outside of Asian restaurants, so this is definitely different. The dessert is very good. The menu does changes all the time though, so what's on today might not be the same a month later. The waiter we got is very funny and super nice! The restaurant manager comes by at least three times checking to see how we are doing. I think it's a bit too much but the service is definitely top notch. read more

Is this a play on Corte Madera? Because this restaurant might as well be in Marin. Beautiful location to unwind after a day of work on Sand Hill Road! The patio creates a great space for either an intimate conversation or group seating. I came in on a Friday afternoon for some wine to decompress from the week. I sat in the bar's patio because it was a wonderfully sunny day. My server, Alec, was extremely attentive and knowledgeable about the wine. First of all, their wine list is exquisite. But it is long, which made me feel rather intimidated. My waiter was very patient with me and helped guide me. The service grew a little more scarce after several 'techie' groups rolled in, but I was far content with wine and cheese board. The cheese board came with five cheeses, some honey whipped creme fraiche (or honey chantilly?) and almonds. Overall very happy with the wine and covered patio, which are equipped with heat lamps for the winter. The seats are comfortable and the service is great. read more

Spent a wonderful Valentine's staycation here. Dinner was amazing, surrounded by older couples, we envisioned ourselves 25 years into the future dining here with pinkies in the air! Grilled Octopus, Truffle Risotto and the rest of the meal were on point! We also had a great bottle of Napa Cab that was fairly priced given the venue. Kudos to the friendly staff. the outdoor seating is perfect! Breathtaking view with clouds. The waitress are awesome too. They are very willing to help you take photos. I love this place, and I don't get it why its yelp review is not so high. Their food is so fresh and tasty!!! I reserved for the spot on the same day, and this went far beyond my expectations. I would also say the chef here is very creative and have high aesthetic standards. Their courses are new American style with very creative ingredients, and the dessert I have is black sesame plums. You can tell how creative they are by the dish names! read more

Who would say no to delicious food in front of a beautiful view? Some day we would just love to hang in the lounge to wait for sunset to have dinner there. Definitely high end food placement with great service. The photos I posted here said all. There is something special about their butter. check out my photo of the bread and butter! Absolutely and completely disappointed in every way possible. For context, I am an avid visitor of the top restaurants in the SF Bay area, as well as in Wine Country. I have what I consider to be very reasonable expectations, and am an easy customer to please. My latest visit (of many) to Madera will likely be my last. To begin, we were asked if we preferred sparkling or still water. We both indicated that we would prefer sparkling, and were somewhat surprised when still water was delivered to the table. This was only the beginning of the nightmare to come. A staff member at The Rosewood Hotel recommended the scallop crudo, so we went with that. What arrived tasted like freshly cut grass, and after the smallest nibble, we pushed it aside. After finally locating our waiter (after asking the guy who brought the bread AND the manager), I ordered the king salmon and my table-mate (who incidentally is a server in a fine-dining establishment) ordered the NY strip. My fish was so dry that I took one bite and pushed it aside, and her steak was so peppery that neither of us could eat it. There were full peppercorns on the steak, shockingly. It was taking a long time to flag down our waiter again, so we settled for the manager, and asked for a re-fire of both dishes, with the exclusion of the obnoxious peppercorns and for a fish that wasn't so dry. He promised to bring the dishes rapidly. Instead of our food, our waiter brought THE BILL only, and the manager was no longer anywhere to be found. Thinking that our food was surely coming, we paid the bill and sat and waited. Unfortunately, we were wrong. When we finally left, the manager chased us out into The Rosewood and offered to buy us a drink for the confusion. I told him that I would have preferred our dinner instead, and for no reason I can discern, he simply shrugged and went back into the restaurant. We made our way to the bar for a cocktail before leaving, and we were presenting with a $150 bar tab for drinks we never ordered. Completely dumbfounded at this point, I paid the additional bill, and left -- shellshocked. Inquiries to the restaurant after the meal, including back-channeling through staff, failed to uncover the reason for this large of a screw-up. read more

Great example of a Michelin-starred restaurant in the Bay Area, without the hassle of having to drive, park or ride share in SF! This is easily accessible from highway 280 and in a much less crowded part of the peninsula. It is situated in the Rosewood hotel, which has a bar and library area for small bites and a proper restaurant for nice meals. We celebrated our sister's bday here, knowing that she likes things a bit more proper (a la French cuisine), instead of some of the more new style Californian places. Not only did the staff printed out custom menus for us as souvenirs, she also got a little special something at the end complete with a candle! As for the food, I think it was very good and it incorporated elements of different cuisines while still having the presentation of French food. The flavours and combinations were certainly not revolutionary, but the execution was good. What amazed me more was the desserts - interesting combinations and textures with beautiful presentation, and a lot of different elements in each dish. I would just come back for the desserts alone! We've been to a (somewhat) recent pop up event in the library area that is designed by the chef of Madeira as well. A bit more casual, no need for reservations, with some delicious bar drinks (albeit super expensive!) - it could be a way to experience the chef's food in a more relaxing atmosphere. read more

This comes to mind when I see someone getting promoted who doesn't even know how to log into the company's intranet (secret santa gift: knee pads) or when having a mediocre experience at a so-called Michelin star restaurant...I'm wondering, how in the hell they made the list. Madera is one of them. I guess this shouldn't have come as a big surprise since most hotel restaurants tend to be mediocre but this was seriously a head scratcher. I've read a lot of mixed reviews and have heard that dinner is ordinary and grossly overpriced so I decided to visit Madera for Sunday brunch. Sitting out in the balcony is a must. You're going to be spending $$$$ (brunch for two: $185 after tip) so you might as well enjoy the amazing view. The two pictured looked fine but two of the oysters were shriveled up, and obviously not fresh. I feared getting sick so I didn't touch any of them. The creamy burrata had a great a great milky flavor but wasn't "marinated". The herb salad was merely frisee and it needed acid. Overall, decent but overpriced. Who orders a burger at a fancy restaurant? *Raises hand* Hey, if Amanda Jones can, I can too (remember John Hughes' "Some Kind of Wonderful" in the 80s?)! The Oak Grilled Sand Hill Burger w/ white cheddar, bacon, pickled veggies, bacon ($20): http://bit.ly/2fw2FyZ was one solid burger. The buttered bun could have been toasted more but it held everything together nicely. I wish the burger was warmer and that a better quality tomato was used than an underriped roma. The fries were excessively salty so we couldn't finish them. My friend ordered the Wagyu New York Steak, black truffle scrambled eggs, mushrooms ($35): http://bit.ly/2eiJ5Jf. MEH. I wasn't expecting Japanese A5 Wagyu for the price but this cut barely had any marbling as it was on the tough side. As for the scrambled eggs, I've seen better scrambled eggs at the free continental breakfast at the Holiday Inn Express. They weren't fluffy and looked like they were chopped with the spatula. Black truffle?! Did they mean, black pepper? Don't be fooled by the buzz words on the menu like we were, this was just a subpar plate of steak & eggs. Service was very polite but unbelievably amateur, sloppy, and disorganized for a Michelin star restaurant. It's obvious that management didn't properly train their staff. The guy in the suit (manager?) was just floating around instead of checking in with customers. When waiting for my cocktail, our main server told me that my prickly pear margarita was on its way. I told him, I didn't order that. We went back and forth, and he said, "The bartender already made it, did you just want it?". Ok, booze is booze so I agreed. Ten minutes later, my basil cucumber martini arrived. Just when I was getting ready to whoop it up with tequila. Then, the bus boys tried to take our plates away as we were still eating with food on our plates. Soon after, they started changing our place settings (for our entrées) while I was chewing the frisee like a cow. Unreal. I asked for a bowl of water for TT and they brought him water in a crusty metal bowl with green stuff floating in it. Having to deal with a fly or two comes with the territory with dining al fresco but we were constantly swatting away flies, bugs, and bees. Surely, they can afford to put a candle on each table when you charge $7 for half a grapefruit and $9 for a glass of OJ?! I wouldn't return to Madera for food nor would I recommend it to anyone unless you're coming purely for drinks and/or Sugar Daddy hunting. Food = Amazing Service = Amazing Ambiance = Amazing Just go...run! It is so good. We had a variety of dishes at our table and everything was delicious. I will warn you that our server told us the lamb dish was small. It was not. Ha ha! We all shared the lamb. I can't wait to go back! read more
