Weeks ahead of time I booked a reservation for valentines weekend (not the holiday itself, but the day before). Checked menu online, lots of vegan options- good to do. 3 days before our reservation got a call saying all they were serving was a 3 course menu that had no vegan options. Frankly, the menu sounded scant and terrible even for omnivores. When asked if they could accommodate us dietarily the woman was very rude and said they would check with the kitchen and call back. Still waiting for that call weeks later. I was left scrambling for a valentines reservation a few days out. Their bait and switch and poor customer service are unacceptable (especially for a place with a Michelin star) and we won't be trying again. Plenty of businesses are happy to have business during the pandemic and we will spend our money at those places. read more

Dinner was underwhelming in both food and service--certainly not on par with any other restaurant I've visited with a Michelin star designation. Service: Flat, disengaged, absent-minded. Our waiter's service was perfunctory, and sloppy. Plates and finished drink glasses were not cleared or refreshed in a timely manner, silverware was missing for serving, food from courses were forgotten, wrong items were brought out. When the wine was poured it was drip drip dripped all over the table and the other food items. So sloppy and without care. At no time were we made to feel 'taken care of' as a table. We could have ordered from an iPad and had people bring out the food and it would have been the same level service, if that makes sense. The manager was actually very nice, so maybe this apathetic hospitality is not systemic-- maybe just our assigned waitperson exuded this sort of "i d c" vibe. Food: Just so regular. Whipped feta was one of the only unanimously delicious items we ordered, but the flat seasoned pita bread it was served with was cold, limp and almost soggy in the first round. We were all hungry waiting for our forgotten second item, so we ordered some more flat seasoned pita to snack on while waiting for our forgotten item to arrive. The second round of this pita flatbread was crisp almost to the point of being fried (honestly, much tastier.) Just an example of the inconsistency of this place. By the time we got around to truly ordering, we went straight to the mains -- the Halibut was such a disappointment. Unseasoned and flavorless, even though it did have a pleasing crispy side. Chicken-- same thing. Lovely crispy skin, but the item was overcooked and dry in some parts, and dangerously red/pink in other bits. Flavor was just fine and the mushrooms it came with tasted like they came from a can-- I'm not accusing them of using canned mushrooms, but it had that weird chewy metallic taste. Cauliflower main dish tasted like... cauliflower. LOL. Did not taste like it was transformed into anything noteworthy. Crispy potatoes w creme fraiche were actually also very tasty, doused in smoky seasonings (not everyone's cuppa)... but the creme fraiche to potato ratio was stingy-- it needed more creme fraiche. Desserts were also just fine. Not bad, but completely forgettable. Ambiance etc was fine, it did feel very full and busy towards peak dinner service. In fact the only reason we had to write this review is that our group (who rarely agrees on anything) very much bonded over this shared disappointing experience. All in all, I think this place is a 3.5, but I'm rounding up for the ambiance and good service. Reservations - very easy via OpenTable.com. I made reservations for dinner on the same day and had a variety of times to choose from. Service - warmly greeted by the host and asked if we wanted to dine indoors or outdoors (we stayed indoors bc it was a bit chilly). Attentive waitstaff. Food - a bit mixed here. Bread & butter - very good. Nice, creamy butter with a bit of olive oil. Octopus - Amazing! Not normally something I'd order, but we went with the Yelp reviews and, as always, they didn't steer us wrong. Great grilled flavors and tender. Hokkaido Scallops - Cooked well, but didn't have the "wow" factor of the octopus. Can probably find something similar elsewhere. Ribeye for 2 - I expected this to be the crown jewel of the evening, but it was just fine. Again, well-cooked, but for the price point, I expected it to really stand out. Flavors were on the milder side. The toasted sourdough on the side was the highlight of this entree. Overall, go for the ambiance and octopus, but choose different entrees. read more

Madera is sublime, in an understated kind of way. Tucked into what at first glance appears a run of the mill business park on top of a hill next to a busy freeway, when its petals are peeled Madera holds all manner of treasure. I've been for supper; yesterday I visited for lunch. And yesterday, by all measure, was a five star day that for all intents and purposes began at lunch, began here. The menu was filled with a modest variety of what all appeared to be carefully prepared entrees, sandwiches, soups and salads. I ate lightly because it was hot. I had a meatball sammy. It was ridiculously delicious. I'm not going to give you the rundown on what's offered because that's not how I was drawn. Suffice it to say the setting and the fare make it worth the trip. 5 stars and worth the drive if you're within 50 miles. And, to celebrate five stars times 200, this. Thanks to all of you that keep my company in this strange little space that is Yelp. I've learned a ton about stuff I didn't know mattered, eaten at places I didn't know existed, made new friends that I hope will remain close for a long time to come. Madera is the elegant restaurant in the Rosewood Sand Hill Hotel. And I've got to say, it matches the luxury that you expect from the rest of the hotel. It has a wonderful view of the valley, especially if you can catch the sunset with dinner. On the opposite side you can also catch a cool view into the kitchen. The food was to (Michelin star) perfection, and the wine was amazing (they have a huge selection). Had a breakfast meeting here on a weekend morning. Upon entry, was greeted and seated quickly. Hostess asked my surname and servers used it throughout breakfast. Nice! Serene views of the area from our table. Server brought good quality coffee and freshly squeezed orange juice. I had the Smoke Salmon Eggs Benedict w/Spinach and found it Very Good. I'm with Stephanie S. below. It's a love/hate relationship with Madera Lounge. It's kinda like that well meaning but obnoxious friend that everyone has. You like them well enough but sometimes things get so over the top and ridiculous you have to roll your eyes and walk away. Small doses are key. That being said, Rosewood itself is a lovely hotel and the patio lounge is beautiful. It can be a really nice place to relax if you come at the right time. The food is also very good, particularly the salumi plate and the sliders. Cocktails are well made and they have an excellent wine list. I particularly love that they have Roederer L'Ermitage by the glass. Spendy but worth it. People watching is amusing but the few conversations I've had here (with members of both sexes) have been shallow and full of posturing. Kind of an older version of Santana Row... only with real money. Heh. As others have said, Thursdays are crazy. And pretty slimy, IMO. Experience it once and then avoid... read more

WOW. S.O. took me here for brunch this past Monday (MLK) since we hardly spend anytime during the weekday... and again I thank him for that! Upon walking in... I noticed that we were the youngest out of the other patrons... to me... that could be 1. because it's pricey and or 2. it's pricey but not good and only older adults are willing to pay for the food. We ordered the following: - Tombo Tuna Tartare: considering the S.O. and I don't eat raw fish... this was our "first" experience together. It was actually good (considering it was our first) ... but it tasted fresh and it was quite a portion that he and I both surrendered during our tasting mission. - Delicata Squash Tempura, Ginger Ponzu Sauce: this was actually really, really, really good! It tasted light and fresh... the ginger ponzu sauce definitely complimented the squash ... gave it more taste. - Clam Chowder, Root vegetables, Poached Oysters, Puff Pastry Croutons: probably will be the most fancy and expensive clam chowder that I'll ever get and order... BUT it was good... real clams (with shells) and the puff pastry croutons....It wasn't heavy nor too creamy...delicious! I do wished that they gave more of the croutons! - Beignets, Blackberry Honey, House Made Plum Preserve: OMG... this was perfect with my soy mocha! The beignets were light and fluffy... not oily ... just the right amount of seasoning and dipped in honey... oh my! I wasn't quite a fan of the plum... and this is just me being a chocoholic... but come on... gotta put some melted chocolate in there for dipping... pretty please!? I tried eating as much as I could but my stomach was telling me to stop. Marinated decently with cilantro and soy, but I still got a few tendons. - Heirloom tomato salad: fresh and tasty tomatoes with creamy bufala mozzarella and a light balsamic. Highly recommended! - Grilled shrimp: added this to my salad...but some of it wasn't cooked all the way through, then I also saw the brown poop line on some... and some of them tasted a little bleach - Dessert #1: costa rica - tamarine gelato, chocolate cake with a peanut brittle-like bottom. Liked the textures, wasn't a fan of the sour gelato though :( chocolate cake was a bit too dry for me - Dessert #2: royal pavlova - sponge cake with tapioca (so I thought, but in retrospect perhaps it was stewed mulberries) - nonetheless, this was the saving grace of the entire meal!! I was introduced to Madera last week and it was amazing to say the least. This review is strictly for the cocktail area where they serve light bites as well. Madera is located inside a boutique hotel. Walking in, you can see the beautiful views of the Santa Cruz mountains. It's a great place to spend the evening watching the sunset and sipping on cocktails. The first drink I ordered was the Prepaid Tuition Plan which was fruity drink, and for my second drink I ordered the Tangerine Reef, which was also fruity but not as tasty as the first drink. I would recommend both. For food, we got the Korean Fried Chicken, and two orders of the Fontaine Flatbread. The chicken in the Korean Fried Chicken was a bit dry but the sauce made it better. Him: Ambience is great for a romantic dinner, or a business dinner. Being in the VC lane, it has more of a business crowd. For wine, I took the Bordeaux blend, one of the best I've had. It was intense, but palatable. Octopus for starter was pretty good. I got the Halibut for main dish, and it's executed pretty well. Overall, 4 stars for food and service and 4.5 stars for ambience. I'm biased a bit on positive, because she was looking ravishing in her Zara dress, but that's part of the experience. We hit the bar next door, and I'd give it 3.5 stars. Drink was decent, but mostly business crowd. Interesting conversations overheard. We were a little tipsy and all over each other, to the chagrin of some single men failing to score even on infamous cougar Thursdays at Sandhill (Sorry dudes). Her: Definitely get the risotto, the only place I've had better is berreta in SF. The staff was super nice and sweet from the hostess that took us to the table to the waiter and random server who took some time to take couple photos of us when we asked. Extensive wine list, I had a Pinot noir called Poppy and it was delish..had a whiskey sour at the next door bar later as well - no complaints there. The fireplace near the tables added a cozy touch to the overall classy ambience of the place. This would not be a restaurant I would want to bring rowdy kids to. Overall a great experience. We went there for my Jinny's 40th. Cute decor/ambiance. Due to the poor air quality I tooted to sit inside. We started with gnocchi (get this it was my fave dish here) octopus and beef tartare. They also start you with bread and butter (wish the bread was warmed up:( For our mains we had: steak, duck, scallops. Everything was decent but the portion sizes were a lot smaller than we had hoped. We drove down from our foggy SF neighborhood for a warm and sunny friendship date. Weather was perfection. We were seated on the back patio overlooking the property and it was like being away at a fancy resort. The food was delicious. I had the eggs/salmon/asparagus while my friend had a delicious salad and grain bowl. A shared cheesecake with sweet strawberries was the perfect finish. The highlight of all of this was our server Kevin, who enhanced the entire experience with his warm and professional manner. Kevin was prompt, courteous, and had a wicked sense of humor. What an utter disappointment! This was our third (and last) visit to Madera. The first two times were flawless, showcasing why they earned a Michelin star. Madera is now a typical restaurant you would find inside Embassy Suites, complete with patrons in shorts and flip flops, children shrieking, dogs barking. Michelin dining is an experience which begins upon check in (2/5). Upon being seated we waited at least 5 minutes before being acknowledged and offered water or a menu. We were not presented with the wine list until we asked and then were told "yes, we do have a wine list but it's only by the bottle"; strange response as we were a table of 3. Service was haphazard and inconsistent. Dishes were plopped on our table with no explanation of the dish and obvious care the chefs put into the creations. Bottle of wine should have been decanted; wine glasses left empty. Infrequent checks by our server. What absolutely made my head explode was when a couple with their big dog were seated at the table right next to us. No thought was put into asking us if we would mind, and before you come at me - this was definitely NOT a service dog. Services dogs do not jump on tables or people. Total lack of respect. Overall service deserves 1 star. If a restaurant is understaffed, they should only accept the number of reservations that can be handled without diluting the experience. My husband and I have dined at many Michelin starred restaurants and as such, we have certain expectations. Madera sadly fell short in service and ambiance. I give credit to the chefs as the food deserves 5 stars, however there are too many wonderful restaurants in the Bay Area to visit Madera. read more

What a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT! Went here for brunch a few weeks ago with my husband to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Service was absolutely terrible! Our server completely forgot about us. He forgot part of our order, didn't bother to check in on us, and my husband's cocktail took close to 30mins to come out. The food is overpriced and not worth it all. My husband ordered a fried chicken sandwich and it was by far the saddest sandwich I have ever seen in my life. It was literally a whole chicken breast, dumped in a fryer, and slapped on a dry bun that fell apart the moment it was picked up. The only upside was the manager. He was extremely apologetic and tried his best to make up for our disappointing dining experience, but the damage was done and we have no intention of revisiting this place. read more

Madera - Sad sandwich - all bread! Where's the rest of it?? - New American Near Me - Menlo Park, California

This entire review is based on my experience back in October 2019 half a year before the pandemic. At the time without a doubt, I do think the food and service was deserving of a star. A lot of it really reminded me of the level that you would expect for a one star restaurant. The execution and sourcing of each dish were all at the standard of a one star restaurant. Some of the dishes I ordered for my starters included American Wagyu Beef Tartare with succulents (yeah, who eats succelents?) and Grilled Octopus the heart of palm. For mains I ordered the Sonoma Rabbit with handmade Pici Pasta or Liberty Farms Duck Breast with Cranberry Beans, Brentwood Corn and Summer Squash. All dishes were very unique not in the flavor combinations but sourcing and use of specific ingredients. Even the desserts were a lot more exciting with things like Brown Butter Cornmeal Cake with Peaches, Bourbon Caramel and Sweet Tea Sorbet, a very delicious play on the American southern traditions of bourbon, peaches, cornmeal and sweet tea. There have been a number of changes since the pandemic including the menu being structured very differently. Instead of having a "Large" and "Social" menu options it was just "Mains". The menu also no longer carries the same energy that it did before the pandemic. Looking at the menu now, I would really hesitate to go to Madera. To me, it no longer has that excitement of what brings me to a Michelin starred establishment. It looks like the boring predictable menu of a restaurant in high end hotel that VCs go for power lunches. None of the menu items really excite me, a lot of it to me reads as just simple, straightforward bistro food that's well executed like the cherries and duck or a steak and then pretty basic sides from a steakhouse to order. Frankly, for that kind of menu and price, I rather go to Selby's/Village Pub. read more

I came here for lunch on a gorgeous summer day, and I was pleasantly surprised with Madera. The outdoor patio provides a nice view of the pool area as well as the Stanford foothills. The service was attentive and our food was promptly served. The burrata and roasted beet salad was good, although I secretly wished that the beets were heirloom tomatoes :) The grilled mahi mahi salad was also tasty--it wasn't overly flavored or salty, so I could still taste the natural fish flavor. I'd also recommend the roasted quail, which was crispy on the outside but still tender on the inside. Although I'm sure the dinner is good at Madera, I'd suggest coming here for lunch. The atmosphere is very relaxing and I felt like I was on a mini vacay, even though I was only 25 mins from home! read more

Poached wild mexican prawns: So fresh, large, and is delicious with their housemade cocktail sauce! Roasted sunchoke soup: served with creme fraiche and chive. They serve it with a bowl with a bit of creme fraiche and chive and then pour the soup in. I suggest mixing the creme fraiche in because I didn't do that and then parts of the soup were very sour due to the creme fraiche... Schmitz Ranch Lamb: served with black truffle. This is served with a small cut of shoulder, sausage, and shank. I personally liked the shoulder the best. The black truffle is not overwhelming and complements the lamb nicely! Sonoma Liberty Duck: I really liked the duck. I'm not sure if it's just because I like duck or if it's because it was prepared well...probably the latter. It was so juicy, the skin was crispy, and it wasn't overly salty! Chocolate Ornament: This is such a nice seasonal dessert. It looks like an ornament, but made of chocolate, and the waiter tells you to break the ornament with your spoon. Once you break the ornament, you can see the whipped peppermint inside of the ornament. The chocolate shell of the ornament is a good slight bitterness to counter the sweetness of the whipped peppermint. I wasn't a huge fan of the peppermint bark inside it though. read more

I wanted to check out Madera because it has one Michelin star so we went here for brunch. My first impression of this place was that it was really classy. It's inside this swanky hotel with some expensive jewelry shops (Hermes!). The Sunday brunch menu was quite small and curated. My usual go to for brunch is eggs plus bacon plus potatoes but they were charging $28 here which I thought was ridiculously overpriced. I opted for the savory French toast instead and shared a chorizo flatbread. The chorizo flatbread was good. I have never seen chorizo chopped up finely so this was a nice change from the usual sausage. There were a lot of peppers and olives on the flatbread so it was a bit on the tangy / sour side. I liked it overall! Very different. The bread on the table was quite good. The focaccia was extremely fluffy. It was like biting into a foam cloud. The butter in an odd pyramid shape went very well with the bread. The savory French toast was interesting. I love caramelized onions and this plate had plenty of it. The pesto went well. There were two poached eggs on top. I'm not a huge fan of poached eggs but thought it was ok. The insides of the French toast bread was incredibly eggy. Overall a good dish but very heavy especially after I ate the flatbread and the bread on the table. Brunch for two (no wine) was about $60 pre tip. read more

We celebrated my husband's birthday here. The staff made it very special for us by printing "Happy Birthday!" on the menu. That was a nice touch! Our wait staff was very helpful and nice to us. He helped us understand things from the menu that we did not understand. The food was prepared very well. My husband loved the octopus, and we both loved the butternut squash risotto. I loved the amuse-bouche sent to us by the chef. After the meal we got the pâte de fruit (fruit candy) with our check, which was amazing! They made it memorable for us by clicking a polaroid picture for us and giving us the menu with the birthday message in a nice envelope. I would recommend it to my friends! read more

Madera has quickly become one of my favorite restaurants in the area - and I'm lucky to live close by! In the past 6 months I've come here 3 times for lunch, dinner, and brunch, and all my experiences were nothing short of stellar. Service is always amazing and food is always of the best quality. They have an open kitchen that's always bustling if you happen to sit indoors. I will say that portions are largest for brunch and you can fill up really easily off your entree. I walked in without a reservation at around 11:30 but they were able to seat me at noon - and it was a seat outside on a beautiful day. Highly recommend snagging outdoor seating for the view! That being said, try to always make a reservation before coming! They fill up fast. I believe brunch is only on Sundays from 11:30-2:30. The time I came for dinner was for my birthday and they gave me a complimentary dessert. So sweet! Their appetizers and entrees always have such character to them and they use the freshest of ingredients. They have a large extensive wine list as well (it looked like a textbook). I don't have a favorite restaurant as of yet but I think Madera is coming close to claiming that title. It's one of those gems that you come back and back again to. Always such a pleasure! The last 2 times we came here have not been so great. What I remembered before was the great service over the mediocre food. The last 2 times the service has been terrible! The food was just OK. Although I still love the fries. The cobb salad was good as well, but the rest of the food was just OK. I can't complain enough the bad service. They totally fit us in right before the rush. The entire restaurant was full when we left at 8pm last night. Service: Excellent, treated us like we were eating at a fancier place, didn't fold napkins, but did rush over to the table to pull out the chair upon return from the potty. Our server was not so knowledgeable about the cuisine, forgivable, seeing as the they are still going through growing pains. Amuse: Not my favorite, a gelatinous carrot mousse, colorful & I loved the shaven veggie roots atop, skipped the rest. Apps are a MUST do: *Pork Belly, not the standard, crispy, mostly skin belly, lots of juicy fatty meat too! The mushrooms were so earthy and really brought out the flavors of the meat. *Mache Spinach, Muscat Grape & Duck Confit Salad, EXCELLENT, fresh fluffy greens & thickly shaven parmesan, plenty of duck also. Yum. Entrees: *Rib Eye w/chanterelles, not enough flavor for me and seemed almost too lean to be a RE. LOVED the thickly cut pan fried potatoes. MMM. *Halibut w/chorizo, clams & potatoes, rustic, perfectly fried & seasoned. Desserts: *Rhubarb cobbler w/creme fraiche ice cream. Hallelujah!!! Stinkin' good, satisfied my need for something refreshing, rich & buttery texture. Love. *American Cheeses, stunk, skip it. Wines: Stay away from the Pinot Noir by the glass, it's Thomas Fogarty. We went here for a Sunday lunch after picking this off the Eater list of Michelin restaurants in Bay Area. Overall, avoid this place because the food is majorly sub-par. The good - The outdoor patio, service, ambience. The bad - food was far below and downright shoddy. I got the scrambled eggs and it was served with tater tots instead of a hash. The eggs had no flavor and were indistinguishable from diner food. Our bill was $100 for 2 people with no alcoholic drinks or appetizers, but we've had much better for less than $20. read more

$9.00 for each type of bread (one was gluten free), $12 for a bottle of still water, $38 for a cobb salad (OK, nothing special). Nickel and diming for the Sand Hill crowd is not my idea of fun lunch. This will be my last visit. read more

Overpriced COLD food. Go somewhere else. The food is so cold it is unreal. And did I mention it's overpriced? Take away their Michelin star! (Sorry didn't know it was already taken away. In that case keep it that way!) read more

The food was above average but yesterday after we got seated no one attended the table for literally almost 20 mins. We complained to two of the managers and they only said they would try their best to find someone to service the table. After that it was another 10 mins... Yesterday's highlight was the dessert we ordered at the end. read more
