Just moved to the area and stumbled upon magpie. Got the sausage and olive pizza the first time and it was amazing. Then went back and got the antipasto which had fresh baked bread. I ordered the special cheese ravioli in a bacon, red pepper, wine sauce. It was so good! I will be back regularly. read more

I know. Everyone in the area is all excited about Magpie, but it just didn't do it for me, my husband, or my kid. Maybe it's because we've eaten the best pizza when we lived for 14 years in New Haven, few pizzas have compared favorably here in western MA. We're not big fans of sourdough, and the pizza crust of the Margherita pizza was so sour that it made my throat ache. Same goes for my husband. My daughter took two bites and wouldn't eat any more. And this is a kid who loves a good, quality pizza. Service was slightly better than average. We had to ask repeatedly for a glass of water for our daughter, and utensils/napkin were never brought to her even after asking for them. Pizza was not oily, I'm glad to report, but it was also fairly flavorless (we had to salt the pie, and we NEVER do that!) and skimpy on the mozz. The final blow was that the pizza was seriously overcooked, and burnt sourdough is unpalatable. Sorry, I don't think we'll go back again. We'll spend our pizza budget at Hillside Pizza in Deerfield (and also now in Bernardston as of autumn 2011), which does make an excellent pie. read more

I've been three times now since moving to the area last summer. The first time was... mehhh... okay. The place gets super packed on the weekends, so be prepared to wait about an hour if you get there past 6pm or so. All three times I've gone I've had pizza. They have vegan options, which basically means ask for it with no cheese. The first and third time I had a pizza there their crust had no flavor, not even salt. I left still craving pizza as what I had was flavorless. The second time my pizza crust and pizza was VERY scrumptious! Two out of the three times I've ordered arugula to top my pizza. They have forgotten to add it both times! That's hard to miss as it's heaped on top. Also, the third time they forgot to put garlic on as I couldn't taste it at all. The second time it was very strong and that made the flavor awesome. I have to add that the service people are really awesome. They are always super nice, talkative and attentive. So the place gets a star for that alone. So for an $11+ small build your own pizza (no discount for not getting cheese which is expensive), it's just a luxury item for me... and if I'm going luxury then I'm going to go somewhere where the food is consistently good. I love this place! It's fun to sit outside in the summer, meet a friend at the bar or enjoy a family dinner in the dining room. The waitstaff is superb and the atmosphere is upbeat and fun. I tried this place last night and this is what I found: 1. Nice build out. The space is newly done and has a positive atmosphere. This place is a nice addition to the formerly empty Bank Row section of town. 2. Service was mediocre. Our server was marginally friendly and did the minimum to serve our needs. 3. I ordered the Margarita pizza- I was expecting a very good pizza as I did read other yelp reviews before coming here but was not impressed. This pizza was average. Nothing positive that stands out at all. I will give it another try one day and maybe choose a different dish to try. For someone that does not know what good pizza is this may be a place to try but if you are used to delicious pizza you probably will be disappointed. read more

Magpie has delicious pizza!!! The crust is incredible: light and chewy, and the pizza is made with the freshest ingredients, culled from local vendors/farms. We shared the Margarita Pizza with our friends, Marian and Michael. It was served with fresh tomatoes, basil, and ricotta cheese: creamy, juicy but not soggy, and heavenly! Not the least bit of grease! We also had the grilled fennel, pine nut, goat cheese, green olives, arugula, lemon zest pizza, which was just incredible. The flavors mingled together to create the perfect melange in our mouths! I'm from California, and it's hard to find creative pizza that's not greasy, and has vegetarian options. Magpie offers such a treat! I would also highly recommend the honey butter bread for an app: it was truly incredible: more honey than butter, all local honey (you could really taste the layers of flavor in the honey), and, the same chewy bread in the pizza. You might think this is redundant after ordering pizza, but, it's not. You'll want it -- for an app or a dessert. It's just fabulous. They also have a special pizza (right now) with marscapone cream, blueberries, and honey, which also sounds like dessert! As for dessert, we tried the Fudge Bottom Pie, and were truly disappointed: in no way was it fudgy. It was filled with a light cream and had a crust of lime-graham cracker (it seemed) and chocolate, but it did not live up to its title. Oh, well. The service is excellent: attentive, responsive, & caring. Pizzas are small, priced around $9-13, and serve two people. It's beautiful inside: lots of brick and glass, light and bright. You might ask, after all my raves, why the 4 rather than 5 stars. This, my friend, is because of the incredible noise inside. It was unbearably loud. Louder than it's sister restaurant, Hope & Olive. We couldn't hear each other talk. Or think. But, we could still eat that delicious & healthy -- yes, healthy! pizza. The addition of Magpie is a delight in a town that's just beginning to wake up again. It will definitely become a local hang out and a social gathering place. Okay, so you're asking yourself... 5 stars? Really? To a pizza place in Western MA? From someone who is a transplant from NYC? Yes. And I really mean it. When we first moved to Greenfield, we tried a pizza place across the street from us. Blerg. It was basically a Pizza Hut pizza. I was informed by a local that this style of pizza is typical of the area and I despaired of ever having a good slice again. And then, I discovered that Hope and Olive offered a daily pizza special, and it was good! A nice, thin crust with fresh toppings. Lo and behold, my dreams came true when the chefs at Hope and Olive opened a full-on pizza joint BENEATH MY APARTMENT. I kid you not. The place is beautiful. I hereby forgive everyone downstairs for all the noise and racket that has invaded our apartment since we moved in (my poor newborn-- she has yet to know a moment of peace and quiet!). The pizza is amazing and awesome. We actually got to taste the pizza when they were doing test runs of the oven (the giant wood-burning oven! gorgeous!) but to have the real deal with all the toppings was exciting! We got the sausage and broccoli rabe. If you know the Hope and Olive (and the Wagon Wheel, for that matter), it won't surprise you to learn that their ingredients are locally sourced, and the sausage on this pizza was house-made. Delicious. We started off with an appetizer of Nana's meatballs. You must order this, especially if you have a kiddo in tow. My two year old snarfed it down without hesitation. We ended with dessert. Of course. There are two desserts on the menu-- tiramisu and fudge-bottom pie. First, the pie-- incredibly good and satisfying. Order it. Second, the tiramisu. Also good but strangely lacking the taste of liquor... (I discovered, in a google search, that the original recipe had no liquor in it because it was intended for kids, so maybe this is a super-authentic recipe!) So, in closing, Magpie makes me miss New York City just a little bit less. If that's not a ringing endorsement, I don't know what is, really! read more

My boyfriend was born and raised in Greenfield and he assures me that these restaurateurs (they own Hope and Olive as well) are a revelation. Dining in Greenfield used to be a real challenge for us but now it is another reason to look forward to our visits to Western MA. From my perspective the quality of Magpie pizza rivals the likes of Boston-area Upper Crust, Arlington-based Za, and Cambridge 1. Prices for the pizza are good, prices for the apps and drinks are great! Even though their specialty pies looked fantastic, we chose two "Create Your Own" pies: (1) meatball with roasted red pepper and (2) carmelized onion, mushroom, and chicken. Both were outstanding! We all had a tough time picking our favorite! The crust is crispy without being burnt, the sauce sweet and delicious, and just the right amount of cheese. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and time at Magpie (our host and server were excellent, by the way!!) and are already looking forward to our next visit home - which will undoubtedly include a meal a Magpie!! read more

The wait is long, but the food is really tasty. And, there is so much food, you get to enjoy the leftovers again on the next day. We stopped by on a Sunday night -- spurred on by other Yelp reviews. Most people order pizza, I think, because there are mainly pizzas being served at other tables. But, let me tell you what you should do. Order Nana's meatball appetizer and the salad of your choice. It will be two meals. Nana's meatballs are amazingly tasty. They are not just a little meat and a lot of filling. It seems to be good quality meat with just the right amount of flavoring. I added a chop-chop salad and had enough food for days. My wife and mother-in-law also came. My mother-in-law ordered this amazing lasagna with real slices of high quality beef. This wasn't the cheap ground stuff. It was actual slices cooked properly in a great lasagna. My wife also had a great pasta dish. As for service, I noticed that the table next to ours had a pizza that seemed a little "well done." They called over the server to complain. She immediately apologized and ordered a replacement. But, she also offered to let them keep the current pizza (or a slice or two) so that they could snack while they waited. I think that they then removed the pizza from their bill. They made it right. So, you can come for the pizza. But, let me tell you, it is worth trying other items. read more

Humm.. Well having been a long time resident of Greenfield, MA I was not thrilled with yet ANOTHER pizza place in our community. These are my observations: 1. Terrible parking (shares with several other surrounding businesses). 2. Very very loud in the eatery. So loud I had to remove my hearing aids! 3. Service was an insult to the experience. I have received better service at several surrounding businesses. Service SOOO SLOW!!! 4. Deserts were comparable to McDonald's as far as "need to try". 5. The sourdough crust was not inbalance, far too tart and sour. 6. The pizza had no flavor, besides the salt and pepper we had to add. So, being a well experienced food connoisseur and having lived in Western, MA my whole life, I want to recommend everyone to save their money, do not waste it on very poor service, below par pizza and noise so consistent, you may have a headache before the waiter/waitress respond to your 4th request for a glass of water. Should have a higher rating since they are owned by the five star Hope & Olive folks but Magpie slips in a few areas. We ordered the roasted vegetables in truffle oil and salt and the veggies came out very undercooked and hard. Had to send them back. The bacon and cauliflower pasta special was bland and boring, chintzy on the bacon and devoid of herbal seasoning. My wife's cod cakes were generous and very tasty, albeit a bit too salty. Updated 01/24/2013: So I've been back again, several times in fact. I've amended my original review. Originally I noted that they were slow in delivery of food, that problem has been resolved. Otherwise pretty much the same as before. They make tasty pizza with high-quality ingredients. I gladly will go back again for more. I am reluctant to write a review after only one really good experience (I don't hesitate if I have only one really bad experience, because that usually leaves such an impression that I often won't seek another.) But I am Yelping Greenfield today and we happened in here last night, after Hope and Olives was too crowded and we were too hungry to wait for a table there. And we were just at the People's Pint recently, too. Despite a really lovely server giving (gasp!) congenial service, I was a little cautious after we ordered a mixed olive appetizer and were served a ramekin of mixed marinated olives (no oil) that one can buy in a large chain grocery store olive bar. They were pitted and too salty, sans bread or crackers. The white wine sangria with fresh citrus and a splash of soda was my own bad. I must have had a cerebral infarct at the very moment I ordered that, having just ordered mixed olives. But, hey, 30 years ago I thought eating a Quaalude might be a good thing. Salvation came accompanied with pepperoni and mushroom (and an appropriate glass of delicious Italian red perfection.) The pizza was fabulous! And, in addition to nuclear radiation toxicity, planet earth is awash in great pizza. So to get all hot and bothered over a pepperoni and mushroom pizza is a real testament to Magpie. A friend and I happened upon Magpie by chance last night, while waiting for an event to start at ArtBlock. We were hungry and just wanted a bite to eat. What a surprise! I was skeptical, because I'm Italian and as picky as one can be when it comes to brick oven pizza. But Magpie's pizza was excellent. Nice crust. Fresh ingredients. I don't like pizza. I just find it dull. Magpie was opened in my town recently and as the wife of a pizza connoisseur, I tagged along as he went out to eat. He loved the pizza, they use a woodburning oven that reaches very high temp and does something to the crust that he couldn't stop murmuring happily about. He ordered the plain cheese pizza but added pepperoni. They have a special pepperoni and mushroom pie offered but he designed this. The pepperoni was the best I've ever had, and I'm a meat eater. It was peppery and light and rumored to be from a VT smokehouse. Not excited to order pizza I looked at the menu after ordering a bourbon/ginger ale from a nice server. The ginger ale is from the tap and also tapped are a selection of other sodas from a local soda maker, Harmony Springs, located in Ludlow. There was a specials board and from that I ordered a plate of local tomatoes, drizzled with olive oil, salt and vinegar. From the menu I ordered the hot caesar salad. The romaine lettuce is put in the hot oven for 10 or so seconds and mixed with the house caesar dressing, croutons and cheese. Deliciously smoky. I also ordered the meat-filled lasagna which was hearty enough to share. There are beef shortribs in that lasagna and after gobbling as much as I could fit, I had that after-thanksgiving dinner feeling one might get when they are lucky enough to have a family which cooks well. The place is lovely. High ceilings and a dark long bar which was recycled from a bar in Northampton. The cocktails aren't as amazingly mixed up as at their sister restaurant, Hope and Olive, but you can still satisfy your libation. read more

We ate every last drop of the honey butter by soaking it up with our pizza crust. Our pizza (potato with added prosciutto) and salad (orange and goat cheese), ordered off the menu, were good, but not as stupendous (flavorful) as the specials. Like Hope and Olive, this is a great addition to Greenfield with a wonderful menu and deliciously fresh foods; however... the waiter was so rude. He insulted me in front of my entire party, when the fact was he wasn't doing his job. I was so embarrassed! The pizza was great. It was creative and yummy. Completely worth the 45 minute wait for takeout. The host was awful. I picked up two pizzas and an app while carrying an infant in a car seat and tending to my 5 year old. The host said my order was ready and he would get it as soon as he did some math. He not only did some math but went to the kitchen twice, dropped a check at a table, and cleared another table before going to get my order. We started out with the baked pear/ricotta drizzled with honey appetizer and it was gorgeous! I had an amazing margherita pizza that was cooked perfectly and lacked nothing. I have tried hard to like this place. The first time I went for dinner on a Friday night. My husband and I ordered a pizza that came out burnt and tasted faintly like - nothing. We also got an appetizer of bacon and pear that was just not appealing to eat - even my husband hated it and he usually likes new foods. Our waitress also hardly visited our table, probably because it was busy, but some water would have been nice. We hated it. Then at my sister-in-laws urging, I went and tried it again. My mother and I went on a Thursday night, I believe, and had the Arugula Goat cheese pizza. IT WAS AWFUL! I have never felt so ripped off! It was litterally cooked dough with a flavorless dry salad of olives and arugula on top! There was no seasoning, no oil, nothing! We actually had to lift off the mound of arugula in search of the tiny numbered pieces of goat cheese that were so spare you couldnt even taste them. I felt like they were trying to conserve money by not actually putting any toppings besides salad greens on their pizza. Dough and Arugula is cheap. Their pizza is not. I felt incredibly ripped off. When we asked our waitress about the olives we didn't know came with it, she was rude and very quick with us. I will NOT be trying this place again! I ordered take out the other night with my boyfriend. We just moved to the area and aren't huge fans of the Greek style local pizza we've tried so far so we decided to give Magpie a try. The staff was friendly, the sauce was excellent, the cheese tasted fresh. The crust was crispy around the edges, slightly burned, and soggy in the middle. I also ordered a Caesar salad which was average tasting, but wasn't worth the $9 price. Bread is not included with purchases. Overall our experience was too expensive for what we got, and we probably won't be returning frequently. read more

Some dialogue from one of my favorite movies, "Breaking Away," about the Catholic sacrament of confession has always stuck with me: "Have you ever gone to confession?" one young man asks his friend. "Twice" the other guy replies. "Did it make you feel better?" asks the first guy. "Once" says his friend. Well, that's pretty much my experience at Magpie. I've been there twice and I had a great meal there once. My most recent visit was with a group of friends and family on a warm spring Saturday evening. The small dining room was packed and we did not have a reservation. Ever optimistic, though, we put our names in with the person at the door who told us a table would be ready for us in about 25 minutes. We knew perfectly well this was about as likely as a good Republican healthcare plan, so it was no surprise that more than an hour passed before we got inside. But it was such a nice day that the wait in a small seating area overlooking the street was not entirely unpleasant. Servers popped outside occasionally to check on us and were happy to bring us drinks from the bar. The atmosphere inside could charitably be described as "lively." Pandemonium might be a better description. It's one of those places where you have to shout to carry on a conversation above the din, which of course only adds to the noise. Accompanying the uproar in the dining room, like the percussion section of an orchestra, loud crashes of plates and glassware being dropped (or thrown?) resounded frequently from the partially open kitchen in the rear. But what about the food? It was okay, but not as good as I remembered from my first visit. The restaurant boasts of its woodfired pizzas, so that's what I had -- a fairly conventional order of a pie with red sauce and mozzarella topped with sausage and mushrooms. The pies are just big enough for two to share, although if you're really hungry, a whole pie to yourself would not be too much. The sauce and cheese were generously applied and the toppings were of good quality, but the crust -- thin, dry, cracker-like -- was not to my taste. I prefer something a little thicker, a little breadier, a little chewier -- i.e., New York style, which these pizzas are not. And it was served lukewarm so that the cheese was no longer gooey and stringy but had begun to congeal. Too bad. I also ordered a Caesar salad on the side, which turned out to be torn leaves of romaine lettuce tossed with a creamy ranch-like dressing and little crouton cubes that might have come out of a bag from Stop and Shop. Not bad, but lacking anchovies, not really a Caesar salad either. Other entrees ordered by our table included linguini and meatballs, ricotta mac and cheese, steak and shrimp, and something called a fazzioletti crepe. The meatballs were large, underseasoned, and had the texture of a well-done hamburger. The mac and cheese suffered from the same congealed fate as my pizza -- it should have been hotter. The steak and shrimp was a perfectly acceptable dish, like something you might have been served at a Connecticut country club in the 1950s. I did not sample the crepe, but it came with a side of Swiss chard as did several of the other entrees, which everyone said was "tough." Now, how a cooked leafy-green vegetable can be rendered tough is a mystery to me, but there you are. The service was fine, with one exception: All our orders came out at approximately the same time but one (the crepe). When we inquired as to its whereabouts we were told that it had been dropped (passive voice -- mistakes were made) on the way from the kitchen. Thus one of us had to sit there glumly watching everyone else eat while her order was "re-fired." I gave her a slice of my pizza to tide her over. read more

Not your typical pizza joint. You can tell the love that is made with each pizza and the freshness of the ingredients. I come here often with many different people and everyone loves it. You can pick from your "typical" pizza or pizzas they have put together for you; or you can build your own. I have tried many different pizza combos, including a sunny side up egg to branch out. I have paired it with a hibiscus margarita which was the perfect combo of sweet and salty. The staff is always nice and accommodating and I've had no bad experiences. read more
