Long overdue review since the time I visited was when my boyfriend was still living in the IE. But was a great later lunch the time that I visited. You wouldn't expect to find such delicious Southern Indian food in a low key plaza in Colton, CA of all places, so this was a pretty good pull from him. Since we came for a later lunch, we were seated immediately and aside from a couple other customers, I think the other orders were all for to go. It's a small family owned restaurant and has a lot of cultural decor and the portrait of their grandfather. Love that. Food came out quickly and the portion sizes are quite generous. Everything was super flavorful and had complex taste profiles. With some things being a bit sour and spicy, to creamy and tangy, and with the carbs having different textures too, made each bite diverse and delicious. You don't get tired of your meal so quickly and makes the dining experience quite fun too, at least for someone who doesn't eat this cuisine as often. I don't quite remember the names of everything that I got, but I did enjoy everything that was ordered from the stews, curries, sauces, and it all went really well with the huge crispy piece of dosa and the vada pastry. The inside of this place is nicely decorated and lively. I ordered the Chicken Curry Special, which included Chicken Curry, Basmati Rice, Lentil, Garlic Naan, Vegetables, Potato Pakoda, and Salad. The staff were polite and prompt. My food arrived shortly. The food was so good, well done, and flavorful. The spice level was mild to medium, making it easy on the stomach. I enjoyed the food as well as their hospitality very much. They also have a good selection of vegetarian options. It's a filling meal for the price if you go with the Thali option. The owners keep it South Indian and authentic, not compromising their cuisine to serve bland taste buds which I appreciate. We got takeout from this place, the food was just alright. Expensive for how absolutely tiny the portions were. We felt we spent a lot and were still hungry even after ordering two main dishes. Maybe the in restaurant experience is better. The food also tasted bland despite the spiciness level we asked fof, and the meat quality wasn't the best in the tikka masala or the beef vindaloo dish we got. The menu comes with rice, and for special note, the rice portion is massive but not presentable. The chicken korma itself is below my expectation, comparing to the place I used to eat at Riverside. I haven eaten a lot of Indian food in my lifetime and this was by far, the worst. The portions of meat in our dishes was embarassing. I had maybe 6-7 pieces of small pieces of chicken in my chicken biryani and my husband had Beef Vindaloo and had maybe 6 pieces of rough, overcooked meat. Also, the rice they serve with the entrees isn't even basmati rice!! I've never been to an Indian place that doesn't serve basmati rice. Lastly, if you pay by credit card, you have to pay a 4% fee!!! My best friend and I came to this restaurant hoping have some good Indian food and man, were we disappointed. We got saag paneer and samosas. The samosas were decent but the saag - terrible The saag was not even blended into a sauce; it was paneer pieces mixed with welted spinach. That is not saag paneer in any way. Ive never seen that before! I rarely do this but I asked them to remake the dish but they said that is how they make their saag. The staff was kind enough to remove that dish from our recipe but to say the least, we walk out of this restaurant very disappointed and hungry. We will not be coming back for sure. read more

First Impression: Dated, but clean. Appetizers: Eggplant Pakoda and Samosas are okay. Entrees: Lamb Vindaloo & Lamb Curry - too expensive for 5 small bite-sized pieces in a very watery sauce. Hot Black Tea - menu says there is a one-time refill, but the server said "NO" there is NO REFILL for Hot Tea. The MENU is not easy to understand. They have a different meaning of "A La Carte" and "Refills." Servers seem to also struggle communicating or explaining the menu. We are very familiar with Indian and Himalayan dishes. We dine with friends from India for decades in Artesia and OC. Our experience here at Maharajah was disappointing but hopeful they could elevate both service and food qualities. I have been coming here faithfully for about 20 years. I'm saddened to report that the level of attention to details is lacking 1) loud kitchen noises and vacuums seeping into dining area -- solution : close the door to kitchen we come to dine and enjoy our food not hear kitchen arguments, noises, cooks clanging pots and pans and certainly not hear the boisterous commotion of a vacuum. I come hear to leave home not enter one 2) fees to use a credit card : stop nickel and dining ur loyal customers. Restore the use of "free" use of my credit card purchase -- I just bought nearly $75 worth of meals and now faced with another "fee - surcharge" to use my card. YOU the merchant should own that fee-- not ur customers. I will give this some time -- but if I don't see improvements -- you will loose my patronage. read more

This is a great place to satisfy your dosa craving. We've had Mysore Masala Dosa and the Cheese Dosa, together with some Idly and a chicken curry. Everything was tasty, just the cheese in the dosa was almost non-existent, and hubby said he liked my Mysore Masala dosa way better. It isn't the cheapest place for what you get, sadly. But there simply aren't that many places around that serve dosas, which I love. Service was pleasant, responsive, and informative. Can't fault them in anything. Amazing value at lunch and great food! I spent a good amount of time living in Fremont, CA (which I think at this point is at least plurality Indian), so I've been spending quite a lot of time in Southern California hankering for Indian food, in particular South Indian food, in particular thali meals (I really don't think you can beat the diversity of flavors and fullness of a thali meal, especially relative to what it costs in term of price). South Indian food is often definitely harder to find because a lot of the Indian food popularized internationally is from the North (think famous dishes like butter chicken, tandoori chicken, etc.) So it's always a treat to find one! That being said, I came in at lunch and realized that the lunch specials were really cheap and obviously only open at lunch, so I decided to get the veggie lunch special. It was an amazing amount of food that honestly filled me up for lunch so much, I didn't need dinner (and I didn't eat breakfast either) - just the lunch was enough to power me through two hours at the gym. One thing that really sticks out about this restaurant is that it really does taste more "home-cooked" than many restaurants. I think Indian restaurant food is often on the oilier side simply as a convention of how restaurants often work. But the food here definitely isn't, letting the flavors of the natural ingredients speak for them. Lunch special came with the following: 1. A lot of rice. It was fluffy and not soggy, with little veggies interspersed. Honestly, what else can you ask for from rice? 2. Garlic Naan. Crispy, fluffy, not too oily (and as I mentioned, restaurant naan often is a bit too oily). Very good stuff! The waiter asked me if I wanted plain or garlic naan, so I guess you could get yours without garlic if you have bad taste. 3. Little ranch salad thing. Pretty adequate. Honestly probably had a little too much ranch dressing on it, but that works fine because you can actually just eat it with the rice (this is what I did). 4. Bowl of Rasam Soup - I'm pretty sure it was rasam, based on the tamarind flavor of the soup. A very quintessentially South Indian dish, nice and tangy and salty. 5. Aloo Bonda - I'm pretty sure it was an aloo bonda, the South Indian fried potato snack. Big ball of stuffed potato and other nice veggies inside, wrapped around a lentil-based shell. I believe in potato supremacy, which means believing in aloo bonda supremacy. Good stuff! 6. Cauliflower poriyal - I think this was cauliflower poriyal. If not, it was something similar - sauteed cauliflower with spices. Definitely a different, more mild flavor from most of the other dishes, very nice to balance out some of the other dishes. 7. The veggie curry itself. Definitely properly spiced, lots of spices I definitely can't identify, didn't taste too heavy, and the broccoli inside was extremely soft and melted inside my mouth. Great with the naan and the rice. Anyways, I came away feeling extremely full and having really enjoyed a meal with lots of fresh ingredients. In a lot of ways, I think the American palette has increasingly trended towards small portions of extremely oily and sugary food. But the food here is at least relatively healthy, gives you lots of diverse flavors with fresh ingredients, and gives you a lot of food at good value! Extremely highly recommended and I hope to be back soon (hopefully for one of the dinner thalis or Andhra Special)! read more
