Tandoori sampler was priced at 20 bucks and we just got 2-3 small chicken tandoori pieces , 2 shrimp pieces, 2 small sheik kabab and 2-3 chicken tikka. Damn damn small portion for the price... and no mint chutney was served with tandoori... 1. DISHWARE!!!!! They serve you on Corele plates!! WTF?!?!?!?! The kind my husband and I bought from Walmart while in college. They were cheap and annoyingly light-weight. We were there on Friday March 11th for lunch and ordered from menu. The food quality is very poor. For example the chickpeas in Chana Masala were crunchy, Taste was not very good. Tandoori chicken had no taste. Food portion is small. Food is over priced. They charge you for every thing even for chutney for pakoras. If you are hungry for a good Indian dinner I suggest find another Indian restaurant. You can buy better tasting frozen Indian food at Costco. One of my favorite restaurants in all of Milwaukee, and hands down my most frequented (it's dangerous that it is literally one block away from my apartment!!!) oh I could rant and rave about Maharajas. Such genuine hospitality, and the owner is always greeting you at the door and making you feel like a special guest in his home. One time the owner treated me to a free drink at the bar while I was waiting for my take out because he felt bad I had to work on Thanksgiving! It was a much needed treat :-) Their buffets are AMAZING! Especially if you are not well-versed on Indian food, it's fun to try a little bit of everything and figure out what you like! Their lunch buffet Monday-Friday is only $9, what a deal!!! Their brunch buffet on the weekends is pricier but includes more selections as well as complimentary drinks (mimosas and bloody Mary's, YESSSSS!) I'm in!!! My personal favorites are the chicken tikka masala and the curry (served with basmati rice, which is TO DIE FOR), and chicken biryani. I always get the naan bread on the side with the three chutneys to spread on. Each entree you can ask for mild, medium, or hot!! So this will please the hot heads out there, myself included. After lots of beer at the brewery tour, we came up with the random idea of getting naan to soak it all up. Yelp guided us to Maharaja and we were so impressed with all the food we ordered! I have always loved this place and frequently got take out at least three times a month when I lived on the Eastside. I currently live farther away but was in town and looking forward to to Maharaja for take out. I ordered my usual Chicken Tika Masala with garlic naan and was really disappointed . The masala almost seemed like it was previous frozen and heated up for my order...almost like a watered down sauce and spongy watery chicken. Th sauce wasn't creamy at all. Maharaja seems to be the most "popular" Indian on Yelp, and they proudly display about 10 years of Shepherd Express awards, so my expectations were high. Interior: typical Indian restaurant. Lots of sequined Moghul prints and red. Expect Corelle plates. Hygiene: hmm...I really hate the whole glass over tablecloth thing. It means those tablecloths are washed about as often as hotel bedspeads, which is to say never. Water glasses were definitely smudgy. Service: quick and pleasant. Our server was pretty new, but he was fast and on top of refills. ***Bonus - hot towels at the end of dinner. Nice touch!*** Apps: papadums were not great, tasted a tad soggy like they were sitting for a while. However, chutneys, samosas and pakoras were all above average in freshness and taste. Naan: garlic, of course. It was "meh" - could have been chewier. Entrees: Hubby got the tandoori sampler and had high praise for the shrimp and chicken which he said was very juicy. I ordered chicken vindaloo, spicy. The taste was really good and they actually made it spicy - a real plus! Portions were HUGE. Decided to try this spot with my niece after enjoying the buffet they offer on Sunday. My niece is vegetarian and they had plenty of options of course being an Indian restaurant. I loved that they give you the option to gauge how spicy your dish can be! I'm very much so into spicy aromatic curries. Will deff be back. One of the better Indian places. I have only every tried the buffet which has a large array of options that are all tasty. My favorite was the warm coconut soup with cream, coconut and pistachio. Pick one appetizer (from 3 choices), three entrees (from 6 choices), one dessert (from 2 choices) includes rice and naan. Food was delicious. Finally! A restaurant that is delicious in Milwaukee! I guess the good places are the hole-in-the-walls. :) First of all, the service was super fast. Almost as quick as fast food! If it's good...it's good! My favorite of the two entrees. Chicken Sharikorma: They use dark meat chicken. THANK GOODNESS! I'm sick of places that use chicken breast that's DRY...gross...I guess it's healthier with white meat, but if you're gonna eat chicken with a creamy sauce like this dish...it's pointless to eat less calories/fat. I really enjoy the food here! The first time I went was for dinner and the food was incredible. We got naan, paneer, saag, and daal and it was all perfectly spiced and tasted as good as my grandmother's food. We came to this restaurant because my dad remembered it from ten years ago when we drove through Madison once and he remembered the owner had another restaurant in Milwaukee. The owner is very kind and made a special type of naan bread for my family because he made it once in Madison years ago. However, when I went for the lunch buffet on a Friday the food was not AS delicious as it was for dinner (non-buffet, family style). So if you are going to go I recommend going for a family style meal or the sunday buffet (which is a little bit more expensive than the weekly buffet but has better choices of food). read more

We went on a Saturday night. Called for reservations 20 minutes ahead and got seated after a 5 minute wait. We parked at a meter across the street and later found out that there's sufficient private parking down the block. No big deal. I ordered wine and the Dosa as my meal and my husband ordered the lamb vindaloo with extra rice, which is his favorite dish in the whole world but we so often have to repeatedly request the extra rice. Here, they brought it out right away along with our food. We also had garlic naan. My dosa was a very large plate, totally enough for a meal, along with chutneys. I also ordered the Chana salad, which was a minimalist plate of lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, oil, lemon juice and garbanzo beans. Totally hit the spot. The atmosphere was spartan but very nice. Hubsy and I went because we were craving Indian. The Location: metered parking available. The inside: cozy! We were the first customers there because we were starving. Mood lighting and good number of tables. The service: fun. He kidded around with us a bunch and made us feel welcome. He also offered us Naan which was lucky because we almost forgot! The food: AMAZING. I haven't had high quality Indian food in a really long time. This was sorely needed. I ordered Malai Kofta which were fried cheese dumplings in a cream sauce. Absolutely wonderful. The food is great, but the staff is even better. I have food allergies and called the restaurant the day before to ask about their menu. I spoke to the owner who said they usually use vegetable oil (which contains an allergen) but that they would be happy to make my items with olive oil instead. When I arrived at the restaurant and received my order, the owner told me she oversaw the cooking herself to ensure everything was correct. She even made me my own pot of rice without my asking. Got the lunch tiffins for takeout for lunch with my mom on the last day of her visit. For $9, it's a fair amount of food. My mom enjoyed her Chana Masala and Dal Makhani, which they kindly made/informed us was vegan as requested. I ordered chicken tikka masala and the saag paneer. The tikka masala was fine, a bit bland, some of the chicken had an odd texture. My problem was with the saag paneer. The spinach was over cooked to the point of being inedible. We ordered towards the end of lunch service so I suppose it could have been cooking/heated up for a few hours at that point. Once spinach is cooked too long it becomes bitter, and I found pieces of char I wasn't able to eat in it. Disappointed, as I've been excited to come back to Maharaja for a while, been coming here for years, and everytime I get to eat Indian food I consider it a special occasion. The service, as always, was friendly. I'd love to come back for the buffet but at $20 (says $18 on the website), while remembering when it was $13/$14 for better food not too long ago, I'm not sure if I can convince myself to do it. read more

I wasn't very impressed with my experience here. Which is unfortunate, since I live a couple of blocks away. To be fair, I got the buffet, so perhaps a dish made to order would be better. I might be willing to give that a try for takeout. Service was not timely and I didn't feel comfortable in the space the way I like to, so I wouldn't eat in again. Incredible food, very nice people. Quick pick up time. This food is best fresh so I don't like waiting around for a delivery service. Food is usually ready for pick up within 10-15 minutes even when they quote me 20 minutes. Never had anything bad from this restaurant. I recommend the garlic naan( made fresh so best eaten 10 min within being made), mango chicken chutney( comes with very good rice), mango ice cream and kheer.
