I ordered the seafood pesto linguine and all I could taste was salt. I should have sent it back. My son had the lamb chops, which were excellent. I ordered a cocktail that came in a tumbler with one giant square ice cube and less than one third of the tumbler was filled with liquid. Not great presentation or value. No chocolate anywhere on the dessert menu. That's kind of a no-brainer. How do you have a dessert menu with no chocolate?? Service and atmosphere were excellent. read more

Another great experience at dinner. We both had the salmon with hazelnut dusted grapes. Sounds weird but was really good (better than it looks). Service was excellent and we enjoyed a Manhattan and the Chai Old Fashioned (which I liked but had a lot of syrup that some might not like). My wife and I started our 10th anniversary celebration across the street at the 636. After a series of disappointments, we left and headed across the street to the Mahogany. Kai, Keena and Reagan were very welcoming and allowed us to enjoy dessert and cappuccino. They were extremely warm and made special arrangements for us on a busy night. To say that our experience at Mahogany Grille was excellent would be an understatement. Wade, our server, was simply phenomenal. He was quick, attentive, and energetic. He was knowledgeable about the food and drink selections, and there were no lapses in his service. I can't speak to the quality of the mixed drinks, as we primarily enjoyed wine, which was very reasonably priced for the quality. But the star of the show was the food. I've been to many, many fine dining establishments, and it is rare to find a place which absolutely nails every course. Our appetizers, the Mahogany Doughnuts and Adult Candy, were great. The Candy, in particular, is a must-try. It was so good, that we flagged Wade down to order ourselves a second helping. We all ordered different entrees. The Salmon was cooked perfectly, well-seasoned, and the accompanying Latka was unique and delicious. The Ribeye was a perfect medium-rare; the grilled broccolini were also just perfect. The blue cheese cream sauce tied all of the flavors together to create a meal which was simply perfect. The fillet steak "Herbert 2.0" was well-paired with the demi-glace, potatoes, and carrots. The Halibut was delicious, and it was creatively paired with the gnocchi and the kimchi. The duck was flavorful and a delight to eat, with the rice and vegetables complimenting the meat well. By this point we were so thoroughly impressed that we ordered one of each of the dessert selections. Unsurprisingly, every single one was a hit. My favorite was the flourless chocolate torte, which at most other restaurants is usually unimpressive; however, Mahogany Grille far exceeded my expectations, as with everything else. Overall, Mahogany Grille is a must-stop. If you are ever in Durango, do yourself a favor and stop by. read more

Ate here on October 9th 2025. We were seated at a booth in a very beautiful restaurant. My wife's halibut was overcooked, surrounded by gnoki, which took on the flavor of the halibut. Not a good combination. I had the filet minion very tender but the seasoning was definitely off. The steak came with mashed potatoes, about three tablespoons. Hardly enough for $52. Oddly, they now charge a service fee for the staff in the kitchen. I guess the proprietor does not want to pay them. Very European, except they still expect a tip. This restaurant tries too hard while offering mediocre food at not so mediocre. prices. I have to say the service was great and the vanilla brulet was excellent. Better to go to the bar. If ever there was a time for Yelp to have 1/2 stars, this is it. 4.5 STARS The highest compliment I can pay this place is that every dish made sense. Sometimes, the food suffered from slight miscalculations: too much chimichurri and not enough aioli with a beef tartare; a half chicken where the dark meat was a little undercooked. But when a dish is fundamentally correct I'm gonna eat the whole thing. For example, an extremely successful chai-spiced elk tenderloin with chestnut-port puree, cranberry gastrique, and a surprising shaved fennel to clean up between bites. I even ate and enjoyed a bread pudding (laziest dessert), executed and portioned correctly here. Decor is fun in a Disneyland/toned-down Cheesecake Factory way too. read more

Its been 2 days since my taste buds were assaulted and I can still taste it. I didnt even want to write this review cause I would have to relive such a horrendous event. Went there with some friends to celebrate a birthday. The best thing there was the bread and butter. We had gotten the elk with a chestnut puree which was so offensive it made the whole meal unpalatable. When I informed the Manager Jessie O about how utterly disgusting it tasted I told him to go back and taste it himself. He offered me a free desert. I was appalled because who wants to eat desert when you haven't even had an entree???? The elk meat could of been quite tasty but every bite was smeared with chestnut puree that tasted like the ass end of a pig who had rolled thru a landfill. I left over half of the meal as I stated before it was completely unpalatable. My friend took a bite and had to excuse herself to the ladies room to vomit. When I went to check on my friend I ran into Jessie O in the hall and asked him if he had gone and tried the chestnut puree and he said oh no!! What kind of manager wouldn't go and try something that someone made a vehemently distasteful claim about and was one of the highlighted entrees on their menu. Then he charged us 58 dollars for an entree that tasted worse than dog food that had been regurgitated. The rest of the food also left much to be desired. I wouldnt take my worst enemy to this place. As a matter of fact we would of been better off going to Denny's. I mean please do yourself a favor and steer clear of this place. As for some advice for the Mahongany Grille get rid of Jessie O and get a manager who is gonna actually do the job as they should which means tasting the food if someone complains about it. read more

The food here is really good. Management has worked hard to hire an excellent team in the kitchen plus efficient, knowledgeable, and friendly waitstaff. The decor is kitschy old-world western, which folks either enjoy or not. Definitely a throw-back vibe of an old Colorado mining town. We will definitely be repeat customers. read more

I am in Durango this week checking on the progress of the mountain home. I decided to stay in the downtown area this week. I have been Daytona dozens of times but this is the first time I ate at Mahogany Grill. I had the Steak & Lobster and even managed a fruit crisp desert before I was stuffed. I will be full for days and every bite was delicious. When my mountain home is completed in 2024 I will make a habit of eating here. The restaurant is full of old world charm and happy faces. For me this is a dinner place for family, friends and that special date you hope to impress. My waitress Kate is charming and wealth of knowledge about the area. She has lived and worked in Durango for 20 years. If the stars align you can sit by the window and have Kate as your waitress while you enjoy the last few hours of sun light. read more

This is a nice fancy sit down restaurant located in the heart of Durango. The building has been well maintained and makes you feel like you are stepping back in time. The service is ok and don't eat here if you are in a hurry because the food takes a little bit. The menu is limited and the food is ok. We spent an over night here after taking the scenic train trip from Silverton. The 1880s venue was charming and nostalgic. The salmon was absolutely outstanding. The seasonal salad unfortunately had way too much dressing and was somewhat disappointing. I found the scalloped potatoes not worthy of being on the same plate as the salmon. The service was outstanding. Our male waiter was friendly, prompt and responsive. We celebrated my birthday and they offered a free dessert which I chose their chocolate torte which came garnished with fresh blueberries and a large strawberry. Since we were staying at the Strater Hotel, and this was accessible without going outside in the cold, and we had a $3 credit, we had breakfast here after our first night. Riley was an excellent waitress - attentive to all our needs, knowledgeable about the menu, and very personable. The dining area is beautifully decorated. We especially liked all the mahogany. Our food was delicious. We had one serving of French toast with fruit (me), chocolate chip pancakes (I sneaked a few bites from my 10 year old niece & it was so good), a short stack of pancakes (2 buttermilk pancakes for husband that he could not finish), bacon, egg & cheese bagel (nephew), and Posole (older niece). My only complaint was the $3 charge for the fruit. Riley said she'd charge me $1.50 - the fruit cup price. It was not worth $3 - only about 6 blueberries & a strawberry sliced up. The atmosphere was lovely. The location was perfect. The food was good. The service was excellent. It was just too pricey for a return visit. read more

Exec Summary: Don't waste your time and money here until management gets it figured out. Try one of many other fine dining options in Durango. Mama Silvia's, where we dined the night before this, was excellent. Detail: I truly wish I could give Mahogany Grille a more favorable review. It has such potential. Unfortunately, it did not live-up. Though we had a reservation and were seated on time, we waited 50 minutes for drinks to arrive - and only after asking about them 45 min in. Then only part of the drink order was served. Another reminder. Then, finally, the full drink order about 15 minutes later. We got some bread after about 55 minutes of waiting. But, again, only after asking about it. After about an hour and 15 minutes, salads came - but half of them were not prepared as ordered. We decided to cut our losses and asked for the check. A person I presume was the manager offered to comp half of the meal cost if we stayed, so we did. Our food was finally served after about an hour and a half but had clearly been in the window too long. We were so hungry after waiting this long, we ate it anyway. Our servers were well intentioned and kind, but caught in a bad situation. They tried to make-up for the poor performance by offering us the remainder of a previously opened bottle of wine. It was nice wine, and a nice gesture, but we sent it back. Other tables with other servers clearly struggled, too. In the end, we did not get the half off, though our server did comp drinks and a few of the lower cost meals. We decided to just take the loss and get out. Management, take note. This is on you. You are not managing this endeavor well, and if that continues, the establishment will fail as this meal did. Patrons, if you're in Durango for fine dining, take a pass on Mahogany Grille until management gets it figured out. You could try Mama Sylvia's, where we ate the night before. Food - absolutely outstanding. We had the Adult Candy and Corn Fritters for apps. My wife had the 12 oz Ribeye and I had the Elk Tenderloin. Everything was superb except...... Timing - within a few minutes of being seated we had menus and water. My glass of wine came fairly soon after however my wife waited nearly 15 minutes for her margarita. We ordered the apps immediately and had them in front of us in an acceptable amount of time. Our entrees? A completely separate story. After being seated for 70 minutes, I finally asked why they hadn't been delivered and the server said she'd check on it. She then returned and said it should be about "6 more minutes" (or about the time it takes to cook my elk tenderloin to medium rare (right?). Service - while we're waiting for our entrees, we observe other tables around us receiving bread baskets and heard another server tell their table about Specials for the evening. What? None of that happened for us. On top of the fact that it's part of the server's job to understand the fact their table hasn't yet received their entrees. We recently did a Colorado road trip to visit the National Parks. We stayed in Durango & on for our anniversary we decided to eat somewhere extra nice. We chose this place based on the reviews. It exceeded our expectations! It is now on our top 10 list & I highly recommend it. First of all, the ambiance is beautiful! It's inside the Strater Hotel with lots of Victorian furniture, stained glass, & elegant atmosphere. The service was impeccable. Our waiter's recommendations were spot on. We ordered the "adult candy", cheese filled dates wrapped in bacon with honey drizzle. My husband ordered the elk tenderloin & I got the Chilean rainbow trout. Both were delicious! read more

My father and I stumbled upon the Mahogany Grille two years ago on a trip to Colorado. We were so impressed that we returned for breakfast the next morning and again for dinner this past September. Many small town restaurants fail in their attempt to approximate "big city" cuisine, but Mahogany Grille is a rare exception; the food here could compete nationally. Located in the historic Strater Hotel, the restaurant is aptly named, with a gorgeous 19th century Victorian dining area populated with tables made from mahogany. The atmosphere alone is worth the visit. An appetizer of chilled Maine lobster over Bibb lettuce was simple and delicious and a tremendous value for only $20. My father's wedge salad won points with crisp iceberg, fresh tomatoes, red onions, generous chunks of Stilton, homemade blue cheese dressing, and bacon strips still sizzling from the pan. My entree featured a spice-rubbed Ahi tuna steak served over a medley of crisp bok choy, edamame, broccoli, bell pepper, and soba noodles dressed with a sweet soy-based sauce. It was a dish of complementary flavors and textures that would be the envy of many Asian restaurants. I was impressed to learn that the chef sources many ingredients locally, including a whole lamb that he breaks down from nose to tail and serves in a variety of creative ways. On a night I visited, braised lamb shoulder was accompanied by root vegetables and herbaceous potato croquettes. The texture of the lamb evoked comparisons to pot roast and was so delicious and comforting that I considered asking for a second helping. The next time you pass through Durango, consider enjoying a meal at the Mahogany Grille. If I lived in Durango, I would probably dine there for breakfast and dinner every day of the week. Random trivia: Like most historic hotels, the Strater is allegedly haunted. I would love to conduct an instrumental trans-communication (ITC) session on my next visit. More random trivia: The Strater is featured briefly in "National Lampoon's Vacation." Pay close attention to the scene wherein Clark Griswold haggles with the front desk clerk regarding his lost travelers checks. I liked the old building vibe about the place, food was good enough, but mainly I chose the grille and this street window to spend some time checking the action across the street. But I'll get to that soon enough. This is a steak house for blue hairs, for the most part. Oh sure there were young couples looking like this was not just a light evening meal, but they'd really rather be somewhere else. So yes there was a live musician, or so he seemed anyway, and frankly I forget what I ate but it wasn't steak. Waitress was a recent transplant from Maine I believe, left old boyfriend, etc etc etc. Open to the new but maybe not likely to find it in this cowtown. Anyway, what was really on my plate aside from whatever it was I ate, this night as well as in the rest of this entire trip to Utah that would occupy the next 12 days, was to confirm if one of the really good backstreet trance mediums I've seen from time to time in sedona, az has relocated here as was rumored. I won't go into a discussion of this aspect of my personal interests except to say Vred Horvath is gifted in both materialisations and kinetic audio messaging. After dinner, the door to the psychic upstairs still seemed open across the street so I went up, only to meet a nice Greco-Romanii palmist named Patricia. She was kind enough but not really capable of connecting to anything outside the room. I asked to examine one of the cards from her tarot; it was from an interesting antique deck i'd never seen before from eastern europe. I left her $30 which was 10 more than she asked. True to breed, she declined having her picture taken...good for her. I continued to look for Vred this next week. If you're in town and have dinner at the Mahogany drop in on Patricia after about 9 pm if for no other reason than to see for yourself that no matter what you may have heard, it's not true these people eat their kids. read more

We were on the way out from Durango and decided to try out this gem. The decor was beautiful! I loved all the details and cleanliness of the place! We sat by the window and watched the shoppers on Main Street. I ordered the oatmeal, it was hot, fresh and delicious. My children ordered the pancakes with eggs and bacon. The pancake was delicious! It was nice and fluffy in the inside and had bits of crisps ends with power sugar (it's making my mouth water was i remember it). We also ordered mimosas which were delicious! The waitstaff was more than accommodating. They were attentive, sweet, and treated us like royalty! The only reason why this review wasn't 5 stars was the French dip meat was a little tough and I wish the side seats by the window had some sort of shield from the door because it was cold every time the door opened. read more

Tried this restaurant on May 29. Slow service. The waiter was apologizing to various tables for different reasons. My choppino was luke warm, way to peppery and had a small amount of fish. I sent it back. They reheated and threw in some over done shrimp. Then they said there was no bread to go with the dish. Was the worst Choppino I ever had. Beet salad was good but only had beets, nuts & feta. The porkchop was good but was missing side vegetables and apple glaze(no sauce). Baked potato was not hot. The restaurant is beautiful and a part of the hotel. We would not eat there again. Seems like there was no manager in charge. I give it one star. read more

Overall: very disappointing. No substitutions allowed with entrees even if you're willing to pay more. Took forever to get our food. Bread and rolls were cold. Potatoes were cool and hard in places. My beet salad was scarce on beets and cheese shavings. We both got the French onion soup and found it salty but flat. Cheese was barely melted. My husband did say the prime rib was perfect. We stayed in the hotel, so it was convenient to eat in-house, but we won't be back to the restaurant. The quality and service didn't match the price. read more

I must say given some of the recent reviews I was a little hesitant to go to the Mahogany Grill; however, we had been given a gift certificate we wanted to use. I had been there twice before. This was my third visit. Some of the low ratings confused me. We had excellent service from start to finish. We were promptly seated by a friendly staff member. Our server, Madi, was wonderful. She was very pleasant, efficient and attentive. I ordered the elk tenderloin and my wife had the steak Herbert. They were both excellent and cooked to perfection. The sides of potatoes and asparagus were a nice pairing. We had crème brûlée for dessert which was excellent. The ambience at the Mahogany Grill is wonderful; Beautiful turn-of-the-century furniture and architecture. All in all, it was a delightful evening with delicious food and great service in a beautiful setting. I would highly recommend spending an evening for dinner at the Mahogany Grill. read more

Dined at Mahogany Grill last night and was underwhelmed. First, we were told by the Strater Hotel front desk that we could go over and dine, as there was an opening at 7:00p. We immediately went two doors down and was greeted by the hostess after five minutes or so. We were informed that they were unable to accommodate our party of three due to being booked up with reservations. We left and did some shopping nearby, when our daughter decided to make a reservation she saw available online. I was skeptical, believing the hostess, but we returned and stated our reservation name and time. The hostess stumbled over her words and took us straight to our table. She apologized for the "miscommunication." Our server Kate was the highlight of our dinner. She was attentive and honest in her recommendations. A true delight. We ordered two NY strip steaks, the bone-in ribeye, herbed mashed potatoes, penne pasta, two house salads, and a Caesar salad. All three salads were good, although our daughter complained the Ceasar was a bit too vinegary. The mashed potatoes were delicious; however, the penne was lukewarm and a bit undercooked to be considered al dente. The steaks were mediocre at best. They were cooked appropriately but lacked any flavor whatsoever. The NY strips were served atop a hidden tablespoon of pesto which was unexpected and unappetizing. Ultimately, we consider the Mahogany Grill overrated given the frustration of securing a table, the actual quality of food and their menu prices. Save yourself the hassle and choose somewhere else for your steak dinner. read more

All rounded out with a nice selection of rolls, butter and sour cream. Add to that a Merlot makes it a very enjoyable meal. My server, Rachel, was attentive, professional and nice. Excellent restaurant with exceptional customer service! Stuffed mushroom appetiser was fantastic, the Elk was cooked to perfection and very tender and flavourful! The apple chutney really was a great addition to the pork chops! The side dishes were amazing as well! The bread pudding normally has a pecan topping but my wife has nut allergies so the chef substituted a whiskey caramel sauce that was spectacular! It's definitely a higher priced restaurant but really worth every dollar we spent. Our server was very nice and was very attentive without hovering! We will be back!! read more

This place has the potential to be so much more. Great venue, great decor, good food, nice wine selection. Then why 2 stars you ask? Really really bad service from the moment we entered. 1. No-one at the front desk when we arrived. And despite seeing us waiting, no one came to seat us for 8-9 minutes. 2. After we were seated, no-one came to take our order for another 10 mins. 3. We placed our order for a bottle of wine, appetizers and mains all at the same time. The appetizers arrived in 10 min. The wine followed 15 min later. And the main courses arrived 40 mins later. And not even an apology. The DMV would do better. Note to the Management: this awful standard of service will kill your otherwise great restaurant. Please fix it. read more

Very disappointed. Four of us visited this restaurant after visiting the bar next door and on recommendation. We went for a good wagyu steak. What we were served was certainly not wagyu, and it wasn't really a very good plain steak. Ordered medium rare and it came medium rare, but I had to saw through it with a knife. I've had wagyu steak and I expected to be able to enjoy a very tender flavorful piece of meat. To top it off, the server was too busy talking about fishing with other customers to attend to not only us but another couple sitting a short distance away. read more

Tried this place for breakfast based on Yelp reviews. Parking is a premium around the area...meters everywhere. There is a gravel lot next to Dennys that belong to the restaurant...that's where I parked even thought I wasn't displaying a hotel permit. I got there about 10 mins before the breakfast session was about to end. But I was seated. I stepped outside the norm and tried their Trout breakfast. The waiter didn't inquire about how I wanted my eggs cooked...had to chase him down later. Eggs looked & tasted like they may have been from a mix. Good hash browns! Well, they forgot my toast...second hunting trip. When I got my toast, no butter and only a single slice. They didn't provide and lemon for the fish...it was just OK. If I ever go back, I seriously doubt I'll get the trout for breakfast. read more

Came from San Antonio, Tx and saw awesome reviews on this place so we were excited to try it. We ( party of 3, all Hispanics) were patiently waiting to be seated when a couple (Caucasian) walked in behind us, waiting as well. The waitress ( Caucasian) proceeded to address the couple behind us saying she would be with them in a minute. We were caught off guard but remained silent. She then sat them, gave them menus and served their drinks and still not so much as a glance in our direction. The bus girl finally brought menus to us after we sat ourselves saying the server would be with us soon... this never happened, after about 8mins we finally stood up, asked for a manager and he (Greg) apologized but the damage had been done, my 9yr old did not understand why we received this treatment or the lack there of service. We left and I can not speak on the food as it was a sh*tty experience. This felt like a very racially driven experience. But overall our night was saved when we went to "Fired Up Pizzeria" and had exceptional service and amazing food. read more
