Wonderful steak restaurant in the historic Strater Hotel, a Victorian masterpiece. Had the Filet Oscar and the beef tenderloin with an excellent cab. I have enjoyed the Mahogany a few times over the years when we are in town and have always loved it, but last night we were there for Thanksgiving. Again, we have always been pleased with the food and service, but Thanksgiving dinner was unbelievable. Not all restaurants can pull off a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, but the Mahogany Grill pulled off a 5-star experience. The turkey was juicy and tender, the dressing was fresh made and not from a box, the roasted veggie au gratin popped with flavor and the right balance of cheese and fresh soup and salad. The pecan pie was outstanding too; we just ate so much of dinner that we really didn't have room for dessert. read more

I do not often enjoy fancy dining restaurants. I am usually going for someone else's benefit, and tolerating high prices for small portions of uninspiring food. Please bear that in mind when I say: I loved everything about the Mahogany Grille, both times, and will go back there of my own volition when I get back to Durango. We spent two days in Durango. We did not plan to dine twice at the Mahogany, but it's okay that we did. Our first night was our anniversary dinner, and the Mahogany was recommended, so we went. Everything my partner and I had was delicious, well-presented, and timely. The server went an extra mile for us in the realm of attentiveness, and when we left, we had that happy glow you get when you got good value, felt they were glad to have you, and tipped generously because the experience left you in that frame of mind. The next night, we took the narrow gauge to Silverton and back, which takes all day. As we returned to our motel room, there was a note: the natural gas main to town had been breached by some cretin of a contractor, and there was thus no heat or hot water. We could accept a discount or leave without penalty. All right, fine; we like the room cool anyway. But where to dine? Many restaurants cook with gas appliances. A walk around the southern end of town confirmed that most restaurants were closed. No gas, no cooking, no dinner. What to do? As we walked past the Mahogany, commenting to each other on our wonderful experience the night before, we saw that it was...open. We wondered how this could be. While we'd kind of hoped to try something different that night, if there was any place we'd be glad to be stuck with two nights in a row, this was it. They had an abbreviated menu. We asked how this could even be. "We set up the grill out back, figured out which items we could still make, and opened up." Do I need to add that there was not the slightest dropoff in quality and value? Do I need to add that they hadn't raised any prices in spite of the seller's market? I shouldn't. When you think of people who treat restauranting as a performance art, where the show must go on and is a matter of professional and personal pride, I think that's what drives the Mahogany. If you go to Durango and you don't try dinner at the Mahogany at least once, you did it wrong. And if, like us, life hands you no alternative but to return the next night, awwww...you'll eventually get over it. Enjoy! read more

We discovered the Mahogany Grille during our yearly visit to Durango. We have visited four years in a row, and each time, our anticipation and expectations grow to the point where we certainly be disappointed. . .yet we haven't. It remains our favorite restaurant ever. Each visit, we have been treated with utmost hospitality by the staff, and we've had knowledgeable and friendly waiters. The food, however, is the highlight of the evening. The elk tenderloin is one of the best meat dishes I've eaten anywhere in the United States. It's a pricey dish, but worth every penny and always perfectly prepared. Moist, tender, flavorful with a perfectly brazed exterior. On our last visit, my wife ordered a beef dish (I wish I could remember the name) that was arguably even better than the elk. It was extraordinary. The desserts are always exquisite (the Bananas Foster are amazing and a treat to see prepared at your table) The atmosphere is elegant and fun, and of course, the restaurant is attached to one of the great hotels of this part of the country. It makes for a wonderful night out. This restaurant is reserved for special nights out, as it is not cheap (especially with wine, salad and dessert), but we never regret the splurge and plan to return for our beloved visit. Very disappointing. One person at the table of 6 liked their entree, the salad was wilted and had very little other than lettuce, they couldn't seat us until a half hour after our res time (it was NYE otherwise I can't imagine they r usually that busy), they bought us a round of drinks only after we complained of the wait otherwise they acted like it was too bad, the food was described as "inedible", "I only ate any Bc I was starved", "clearly prepared at 5 and served at 930", the $45 pp was supposed to include dessert pp but they only brought us one per couple. I had been here years ago and enjoyed the meal - will not go back especially since Durango is teeming with great restaurants. read more

Where to start? I've been dining at great places all around the country for over 40 years. That said, there are hits and there are misses. This was a miss. We were greeted nicely, server was gracious. Ordered at her encouragement Blue Corn Tortilla calamari, our first mistake. Breading was soggy, squid rubbery, aioli something was bland and my first reaction was: WTH? Bread with three butters, all tasted like lard. Look, I review yelp anytime I go someplace, soooo could have been a misalignment of the stars. Sent the calamari back after two bites, decided this was just not the dining experience we wanted and asked for the check. Apologies ensued, manager asked about our meal. We thanked her attention and simply said this just wasn't suiting us, service was just fine, and we're happy to pay for the wine and cocktail we ordered. Check received and calamari was on the tab. Told waitress I refused to pay for that tasteless appetizer and check was refigured. Went to Ore House, enjoyed an amazing meal, spent over $180 and it was worth every penny. Hope that helps. Fine dining at its best! Mahogany Grill Chef Frankie Hernandez's Veal Marsala, and Surf and Turf are all spectacular! Combined with our server Tatum's excellent service and you have a perfect meal. Tender veal thinly sliced, perfectly cooked vegetables and creamy risotto accompany the veal. Tenderloin and lobster tail make the perfect combination served with asparagus and delicious mashed potatoes. What a find! read more

Unique atmosphere with interesting decor. We ordered Cannonball wine which was good. For dinner I ordered the peppered steak Herbert which was good. My boyfriend ordered the special which was a steak with some sort of fig sauce. He enjoyed it a lot. For dessert we ordered bananas fosters which was so amazing. They prepare it for you right in front of your table. This was the best part of the night. Service was mediocre- could've been better especially since this is a pricier place. read more

Hotel clerk recommended. Beautiful place and pleasant staff but very disappointing drinks and food with a ticket over $40 per person. The salmon was excellent as was the asparagus that came with it however the rice that came with it had little taste. Our table had selected the place off the crab cake picture on Yelp but they no longer offer it even though it is on their website menu. Had the adult candy dish which was okay for starters. Two had the Tequila shrimp pasta which we left there except the shrimp as the pasta had a super limey taste. Even though we left most of these dishes which were $21 each the waitress never asked if there was an issue with it. We also ordered lasagna which was okay but buried in marinara sauce. We ordered four mixed drinks and two were good but two were left as they tasted off, too much lemon. The other was a fuzzy navel which had vodka instead of peach snops and tasted awful and did not resemble the excellent drink we had the night before at Steamboat. Best thing was the fresh bread served before the meal! Not enough help so were not checked in with on these items while eating, so we left very disappointed to say the least. We were staying at the Strater Hotel for a couple of nights so thought we would eat at the Mahogany Grille for dinner as the restaurant is attached to the hotel. A friend who lives in Durango says she did not know the restaurant as it is usually patronized by tourists and not locals. We should have taken that assessment as a strike against the place but alas, we went anyway. We started with oysters which was surprisingly fresh. I ordered the Porterhouse steak, thinking that if anything, they should be able to cook a steak well. I was wrong. The steak was quite thin, about 1/2 inch thick and the kitchen barely got any grill marks on the meat. The steak was too thin to see how well done it was though it tasted like it was medium rare like I ordered. The menu says the steak came with "Maître d'Hôtel butter and tobacco onions". Well, there was a tiny bit of brown sauce and a small blob of something that looked like onions on the steak, period, nothing else on the plate. Sure sounded like something much more fancy and substantial on the menu. The flavor of the steak was just OK, like a steak I can buy at Costco, but it was certainly not remarkable. For a $43 steak that came with nothing but the "Maître d'Hôtel butter and tobacco onions", it was truly disappointing. read more

Someone tell the hostess what hospitality means. Sorry start to the evening. Funny how the first impression certainly rang true for the night...lackluster and disinterested. Steak carpaccio was served ice cold and presentation was elementary with beef rolled in tight tubes tucked under wilted arugala and DRY brittle parmesan ribbons. Laughable...only not. Out of the Oysters Rockefeller (probably lucky here). Adult Candy was most memorable and highlight of the meal. Entrees of Elk Tenderloin and the special of the evening, Surf and Turf, both barely passable. Elk was tender, demi glaze tasty, but asparagus was old, tough and cold. Garlic mashed potatoes were also cold and bland, seasoned w garlic powder. The "special" was nothing but...chad and steak served just warm, flat, nondescript flavor. VERY disappointing. The Strater culinary team has lost their touch. The experience was at best tired western folly. read more

On July 25, 2019 on our 50th anniversary, my husband and I were having a nice dinner here. I had noticed a young women and her 2 well behaved children sitting near us....after she left the restaurant and as we were finishing our dinner, our waiter informed us that this woman overheard us talking about our anniversary and she paid for our entire bill!! We were blown away by this huge random act of kindness. We didn't get a chance to thank her, but if you are reading this by any chance we want to say thank you so much for your kindness and generosity ~ we were having a wonderful day taking the scenic Durango-Silverton train and you just made our day memorable and PERFECT. This place was amazing. My wife and I made a last minute decision to eat here and the Mahogany Grill surely did not disappoint. We have some excellent restaurants in San Diego but this place rivaled even those. The waiter was a very nice and attentive young man and he seemed genuinely happy to have us there. I had the special table side steak dish that does not appear on the menu often. It was divine. I can't even describe how good it was. My wife had the salmon and we polished off both our plates stopping just before we licked the plates clean. Yum! I even ate the sautéed spinach which I normally can't stand. Truly an exceptional place. We finished off the meal with the Bananas Foster which did not disappoint. My wife is not a huge banana fan but she ate as much as I did. I would recommend this to anyone that is in Durango for a night. read more

I thought this place was good but not great. The service was good. I was just not wowed by the menu. For the prices I expect a tiny bit more creativity. The desert choices were not interesting either. But overall if you want a decent meal with a little above average service go here. The building is neat and the decor is very Victorian. I don't have a complaint and I do think it is better than other places on that street. I would like to give 3.5 stars but can't. read more

Good food in a great room. We started with the crispy calamari/zucchini appetizer, with two sauces, which was delicious. One of our kid's had the petit filet, which was barely four bites of food--ultra petit. I had a Caesar salad, which had so much dressing on it that it was soggy, and came with a stale cheese crostini, meant to be croutons but not worth eating. The elk loin came cold and had to be sent back, but had good flavor. The prime rib got a rave review. For dessert, the mini-Avalanche and fruit pie ala mode were praised. The bananas Foster, prepared at the table, failed to flame and impress, but tasted good. Service was fair, with plates left a long time before being bussed. Overall, this place has the framework to be a five star, but needs to step up their game. read more

I'm giving 3 stars though I feel like 2 separate reviews should be giving for this place. My aunt and I stayed at the hotel and had a very good overall experience. Breakfast service was delicious and friendly. I would give a 5 star review if I was only reviewing breakfast. Our most frustrating experience was with dinner. The host was warm and friendly. He answered a lot of questions about the hotel and restaurant's history. You could see how much he enjoyed working there. He was the only person helpful during our dinner. I have to be gluten free and my only option was a plain steak or salad. I understand it's hard to be accommodating to all those with a special diet but there was almost a rudeness and I don't care attitude about it. It seemed very unfriendly. Our service was incredibly bad. No water refills, long wait for anything we ordered. We waited 20 minutes for a slice of dessert. When the waitress finally came back to our table her excuse was it was delivered to the wrong table so someone must've gotten a free dessert. That someone should have been us for the lousy service and long wait. In fact, in writing this and remembering the dismissive treatment we received with everything I'm changing my review to 2 stars. It was really a bad experience considering the prices we paid for this supper. read more

I kept on seeing pictures of the incredible food here and decided to give it a shot. To start out, we had very poor service (considering the unheard of prices we had to pay). My husband ordered a sausage dish they had on special ($25 dollars). His serving was small, and of the 3 different flavors of sausage we weren't fans of any of them. My husband and I are on the Whole 30 and in town on business. Mahogany received great reviews and their menu seemed possible to adjust for whole 30. Our waitress, Hannah, was awesome, we told her we were on a crazy diet and apologized in advance for our order, and she said "Whole 30?" She wasn't in it but had heard of it which helped. She was very friendly and didn't hesitate to adjust or meals. I got the trout with double veggies (no rice or sauce) and my husband got elk steak with double veggies (no sauce). read more

We had the pleasure of stumbling upon this gem in Durango tonight and are so glad we did! The crab cake with mango salsa was delicious and the Kalamata olive aioli that came with the bread made me eat more bread than I should have! My husband had the elk and said it was tender and delicious and I had the Stater salad with chicken and it was super tasty! I am writing a review of our experience Christmas Evening for the Hotels' Christmas Buffet. Firstly, we were seated in the theater in the back of the hotel. I was hoping for a lovely room, full of holiday ambiance and coziness, in this historic hotel. The room was cold and drafty.. my daughter kept her coat on throughout the meal. The lighting was horrible, so bright it was like a cafeteria, or operating room! No ambiance what so ever. The Christmas tree in the corner near us wasn't even lit. Service was very poor. There were five adults and three children ( one a toddler). We waited over 1/2 hour for drinks to be delivered. There was a minimum wine list. The bottle of wine we selected was no longer available at 6:30 pm. The food, with the exception of the salad we made ourselves from baby greens, was very poor. Shrimp was available but had to be pealed with our hands. The prime rib was a very small cut, fatty and colorless. Frozen green beans with fried onion rings, mashed potatoes, ok, the sausage stuffing didn't go with any of the entrees and was a poor quality. Salmon was bland and ham a bit dried out and nothing special. You would expect some extraordinary desserts for Christmas but there were three choices...dry cookies, a sheet cake with white frosting and some kind of pie that I did not try because it did not look appetizing in a tin pan with messy whipped topping, maybe light chocolate pie??? Anyway. It was such a disappointment. Christmas dinner out should be a festive memorable occasion, this was but for all the wrong reasons. I have never walked out of a restaurant and felt I just thoroughly wasted $350. That included a $50. tip which wasn't earned but it was Christmas and she was working. My advice, stay home. read more
