I missed korean food and ran into this spot. I got the combination ox tail soup with noodles & rice and it hit the spot. The side dishes were good to compliment the meat and everything tasted pretty authentic. It's nice to have this neighborhood spot instead of driving to Carrollton for a quick meal.
Excellent Korean food. The grilled ribs are huge and have a great char and marinade. The cold noodles are also really good. The spicy ones aren't too spicy but give enough of a kick to give it some flavor. Plus, they are made of buckwheat so there's a different flavor and texture than the normal cold noodles.
The beef short ribs are delicious! I had them as a suggestion from my wonderful waitress! The price and amount for the lunch menu was perfect. They give you refillable sides of pickled eggplant, kimchi, cucumbers, and bean sprouts. Also comes with white rice. I sat at a table in the corner and it was perfect for me. I'd return and order the hot stone soup when the weather is cooler. Drop an egg in while it's still boiling! Delish! I like that there is no TV to cause distractions. Nice to ease drop on the conversation around you. It's enlightening! People are strange creatures. They are closed on Tuesday! All other days of the week are fair game! I returned a second time and it was just as good! I'm already craving another night to try something new! This is my new favorite place. July 2024
TL;DR - I love this place. Grilled pork ribs are amazing. Small dishes and barley tea are great. -- I've been eating at Maht Gaek a long time, mostly from delivery but also a fair number of take-out and dine-in. Despite all that, I realized today that I've never written a review so here goes my attempt at a totally unbiased review of a place where I'm definitely a regular. This location of Maht Gaek is the original one in Dallas and is in the Ranch 99 plaza in Plano. It's a big restaurant inside and has plenty of seating. It's great for big 6+ parties. In fact, there aren't many small tables and it can get kind of awkward when your party of 3 take up a table meant for 6. Luckily a few tables can be broken up into smaller ones. This place is almost always packed around meal times. They close every day at mid-day for couple hours to rest. I generally come here right when they open either for lunch (11 am) or dinner (5 pm) to avoid the crowds. Korean music plays in the background and the restaurant can get pretty loud during busy hours. Complimentary hot barley tea (with refills) is available upon request. This is great for cold days and tastes way better than water. Today I ordered a seafood soft tofu soup, soy sauce grilled pork rib, and a hot stone bowl bibimbap. One of the reasons I love Maht Gaek are the small dishes. They're very generous for take-out and give endless refills when dining-in. I particularly love the pickled cucumbers and kimchi because they're refreshing and the sour/spicy is a great way to balance the big meat dishes. I don't much care for the bean sprouts, eggplant, fish cake, and side salad but my wife likes them so it works out. The seafood soft tofu soup (soondubu) comes with a raw egg. I only get tofu soup when dining-in because it's a pain to deal with it at home. The soup comes out boiling hot (literally boiling) so crack that egg and drop it in. Then stir it ASAP to make sure it gets cooked because it'll cool the soup down really fast (unless you want uncooked egg in your soup). The soup comes with lots of soft tofu (probably half of it is tofu), and one of each of the following - shrimp with head and shell, oyster, clam meat, baby octopus, squid, and a dash of diced zucchini. It also comes with a one-person serving of white rice. Overall, it's pretty good. It makes for a pretty complete meal for one person with the rice and the refillable small dishes. The hot stone bowl bibimbap was alright. The rice is burnt and crusted against the side of stone bowl and gives it an extra layer of flavor. There are lots of veggies but not much protein (which is beef). The bibimbap on its own isn't very flavorful. For stronger flavor, add more bibimbap sauce and mix in the small dishes. This bibimbap is probably good for sharing between 2-3 people. The grilled pork rib comes in two flavors - soy sauce and original (spicy). We got the soy sauce flavor. It's basically a hot plate piled high with grilled pork ribs. It also comes with a one-person serving of white rice but the dish overall is probably enough for 2 people. The pork was chewy, juicy, flavorful, not too salty, and just a little burnt. All in all, pretty good. I generally use kimchi or cucumbers to balance out the oiliness of the ribs. The meat isn't fall off the bone or anything, but sometimes you just want to grab a rib with your hands and rip it apart, ya know? Anyways, this and the LA Galbi are probably my favorite dishes here. The service can be hit or miss depending on when you come here. The food usually comes out pretty quick. However, the waitstaff can become forgetful when it gets busy so don't be afraid to give them a reminder. Today they forgot my barley tea so I had to ask a second time when my food came out. There are no napkins at the table so be sure to ask for it. You can pay at your table when you're done.
Gathered with friends for dinner at Maht Gaek Sunday night in Plano, Texas. The place was quite busy with many patrons. It was decorated nicely with a standard Asian type theme. Our server was pleasant and friendly. The food was pretty good. I enjoyed all the dishes. The seafood pancake was filled a variety of shrimp or prawns, fish, and green onions. The pancake is made with potato starch. It is a batter filled with goodness and then fried. The pancake was a tad thick so kind of not fully cooked on the inside. We had the beef short ribs. Those were very tasty, tender, and flavorful. Next entree we ate was Bim bam bop. It has Korean beef, fried egg, carrots, purple cabbage, and cucumbers with rice on the bottom. The dish is cooked in a hot stone bowl so the rice will have a hard and crunchy bottom layer which provides a unique texture. All of our dishes were different and tasted delicious. The parking was easy access since the restaurant is located in a strip mall. The prices are reasonable and our experience was great! If ever in the Dallas or Plano area, I will return to this lovely restaurant.
Had a craving for Korean food on a recent trip to Dallas so I checked Yelp and found Maht Gaek in Plano. It's located in the Ranch 99 supermarket shopping center. We arrived just before the noon lunch rich and got seated right away. They were busy throughout lunch and a constant line of customers waiting for a table. The service is fast and efficient and the food comes out fast. Only downfall is the tables are small and the four top we sat at could not hold all the dishes we ordered. BBQ pork ribs 5 stars their signature dish. Meaty grilled pork stacked on a hot plate. Oxbone soup 4.5 stars great bone broth could have had more toppings and noodles. Sautéed calamari 5 stars large portion spicy sweet. Grilled mackerel 3 stars good portions a bit dry Banchans we're good especially the eggplant Service was good. Plenty of parking.
Great place to satisfy your Korean food cravings. They have all the common dishes on their menu - tofu soup, bibimbap, bbq ribs, and even the oxtail soup. You can't go wrong with any selections. My friend got the spicy oxtail soup and I got the spicy squid entree. At many restaurants, the spicy squid can be a bit too spicy. However, the spicy squid here is just right - it is more sweet & tangy with a hint of spiciness. The portion size was large - I had some leftovers to take home for a second meal. We also love the banchans they serve here - which you can ask to refill. They gave us kimchi, spicy daikons, fish cake (amazing!), bean sprouts, and I think the last one is eggplants? (I didn't pay too much attention but it was delicious). It's conveniently located in the same plaza as 99 Ranch, Daiso, and 85 Degree C Bakery. Perfect place to stop by before or after your errands.
We were greeted immediately when we walked in and there was no wait. The servers are very attentive, and the service was quick. We ordered the popular recommended dishes, the pork ribs and the pork bone soup. Both dishes were good. I was really surprised by the taste of the pork ribs... very savory. The soup was good, but wish there was a bit more spice to it. Overall, this is a great family dining place where you can share multiple dishes with friends and family.
Food 5/5: Amazing and with big portions! I have gotten their Army Stew, BBQ Beef Short Ribs/Galbi, and their Soondooboo. All were really delicious! All their food also comes with a bowl of steamed rice which is soft and hot and korean side dishes (fish cakes, kimchi, seasoned eggplant, seasoned bean sprouts, and pickled cucumber). Army Stew comes with kimchi, thin pork belly, spam, sausage, and ramen. They bring a small stove to heat it on so you can eat it piping hot! It is very flavorful and a bit spicy, perfect for cold weather. The soup gives off a...nostalgic feeling? Very homey and comfortable lol. You can add cheese and another ramen pack for $2 each. The BBQ short ribs come from the kitchen and are really good! You can taste the grill char and they are so juicy. Soondooboo was also really good and came with 1 shrimp and 1 egg to come with! Spicy and the tofu inside was soft. Service: 5/5 Staff are really attentive and kind! Ambiance: 4/5 It's usually crowded around dinner time but the place itself is tidy and cozy. The place is kept clean and they play some gentle kpop music in the background.

Food: the squid and pork belly bulgogi was $37.99 but it has too much veggies and not enough meat or squid for the price they charged. The soy sauce pork ribs was $25.99. A bit chewy meat but taste good and not spicy. It was kid's friendly dish. It took 20 minutes for the restaurant to bring out the soy sauce pork ribs. Service: ordered 2 sprites. The waitress charged us for the sprites but they totally forgot to bring it out. Another waitress was very rude when she brought out the refill for banchan dishes. She just laid the dishes on the corner of the table (nowhere near us) and walked away. Ambiance: the restaurant was very small and very poor ventilation. read more
No, no, and no. Cramped restaurant in a Chinese strip mall with no Koreans in sight at front of house nor customers. Have no idea where these 5 star reviews are coming from esp when you see the lineup you'd think this place must be really good. I'm Chinese, my wife Korean and I've eaten a ton of Korean food (and the best restaurant I've been to in the US are LA and Houston of all places). When my son says, "Dad, this isn't very good". I knew we were in trouble. He had the bibimbap that seemed just flat and he said it tasted like peanut sauce gojujang. The pork ribs over rated. It's strips of sliced pork chop with rib, boiled first, and then thrown on a grill with Kalbi sauce. The bibimnaeungmyun, over priced and just blah. Too watery. My wife did say however the pork bone soup broth was quite good (and she's an accomplished home cook). The pajeun is nothing like I've ever seen. Crumbles like powder when you pick it up. Prices too high and if this were Carrollton they'd never be able to stay in business. Food not good, but servers very nice though grossly understaffed. 2-3 servers to run the floor. Amazing place! We got here for a Sunday dinner, ordered seafood pancakes and bbq pork ribs (soy sauce, not the spicy one). Both portions were huge and came with number of side dishes. Everything was delicious. But specifically I want to call out ribs - they were amazing! I saw different hotspots and soups on the menu but didn't have a chance to try. Definitely worth a visit just for the ribs, we will come back again. Even our picky kids loved it! All the servers were really nice. One thing to be aware of, you need to join the waitlist in person and may get into a situation where the line is huge. read more
I visited this restaurant at the recommendation of many many close friends and, unfortunately, my experience left much to be desired. The kimchi lacked flavor, tasting surprisingly bland. The temperature inside was uncomfortably hot, making it difficult to enjoy the meal which was almost mostly hot food. I will give them the fact that their food presentation is pretty excellent. The taste of the food itself was really nothing too special either. Shout out to the servers as well as they were very attentive given how crowded the restaurant was at the time. read more

I still can recall the beef and rice cake item we ordered for $42 but it was huge and it was absolutely amazing! Pork ribs also out of this world. Top 2 items, my family enjoyed the spicy squid. I'm not a big fan of Korean soups, I prefer Pho and bun bo hue. But try my recommendations it's out of this world good. read more

Came in for Sunday dinner, there was a little bit of a 5-10 min wait but wasn't bad at all. The cups made it feel so authentic and I love how we got our own water pitcher. First time trying the soups ever. The ox combination was good. Needed salt for sure. Very beefy flavor! Would be great if you need to sober up lol. The downfall was that there really wasn't much flavor and the meat was still a little tough. The pork ribs is what they're known for and I regret getting them. Wasn't much of a fan. It was good, well seasoned but nothing spectacular. The pork bone soup, DAMN THAT WAS GOOD. Meat WAS SOFT AND WAS FALLING OFF THE BONE. Easy to eat with chopsticks. Im coming back for this soup and I'm bringing people with me! So flavorful and delicious, please get this soup if you come. I'm def coming back again! read more
We always shop at Ranch 99 and my wife wanted Korean food. We ordered the pork ribs which were delicious and then pork belly bulgogi which was great. We got our bon chon and you can order many. Service was great. I would definitely go here again. read more
My family has been consistently coming here for years and we love it! I think this is one of the better Korean places in the area. The side dishes are delicious and the service is so speedy! It's a little pricey but you won't be disappointed with whatever you order. I recommend the seafood pancake, the army stew, and the galbi. read more

i highly recommend this joint if you're in the mood for some authentic Korean flavors!! Each dish was as great as the next without a doubt. Licked my oxtail soup bowl clean, that's how enjoyable this meal was to me! i'd go back in a heartbeat. Even the bonchons were on point! This isn't a KBBQ joint where you cook the food in front of you. Albeit, their food is real good and have a lot of traditional Korean dishes you can't find other places! I got me some Cold Buckwheat Noodle and had a great meal as I reminisced on the days I spent in South Korea. I also tried the Grilled Beef Short Rib and it was very flavorful/delicious. Service was decent. I'd definitely come back whenever I need a real authentic Korean food fix! read more
The Best Korean restaurant I ever been in Dallas. They serve the best Kim Chi. Food is very delicious. This location in Plano is always full, so expect to wait for 30 minutes to an hour if you come in during lunch or dinner rush. Service is ok. Some server can be a little aggressive, but I guess its Korean style. read more
This spot is fantastic if you're looking for some authentic Korean ribs. They're located in the same plaza as the 99 Rank Market. There's a limited number of seats if you decide to dine in, but the food is definitely worth it. Order out if you must to get a taste. Korean Ribs: I've tried both the Original and Soy versions of this dish. The Soy is great and has some strong flavors to it, but the Original is what I'd recommend as the flavors/seasoning/marinade are all very well balanced and offer an explosion of joygasmic flavors. There's a solid chew to the meat that still remains fairly tender and is in no way dry. This is what you come to this restaurant for and should always order it. Sullungtang: Ox brisket soup here is good. Not overpowering and is a comfort food type of soup that goes well with the stronger flavors you may get from the ribs. It's a nice counterbalance if you happen to order this and the ribs. Comes with a bowl of rice. Budae Jjigae: The Korean Army Stew is large and easily serves a group of 4 and is heated to a simmer table side with a burner. The large pieces of tofu, instant noodles, and plethora of luncheon meats and hot dogs plus pieces of pork are absolutely delicious. The stew is a bit sweeter than what many others may expect, perhaps they add a sweetener or sugar of sorts to the base. I had no complaints and thoroughly enjoyed this dish and the spice it had wasn't overbearing. This place is definitely a spot to visit for Korean food. The banchan (Sides) that comes with the meals were all good and a great indicator of the potential quality of the restaurant. A solid 5-star recommendation for those seeking a Korean meal. read more

If you do not know, you know now. But you must get the pork ribs here. Atmosphere - 4/5 - Decent sized place. Typical korean restaurant. Staff - 4/5 - Friendly. Typical korean type staff. Food - What I ordered: - Grilled Pork Ribs - 5/5 - This is a must. Make sure to get it spicy (it is not really that spicy). - Kalbi - 5/5 - LA Kalbi. My favorite korean meat on most occasions. But you must get the grilled pork ribs. - Jok Bal - 5/5 - Pork hock. This is really good too. Highly recommend. - Pork Neck Bone Soup - 5/5 - The broth is very flavorful. All in all, I really love this place. The dishes are tender and flavorful. A must try if you never been. read more
You might not notice this korean restaurant along the southern strip near 99 Ranch but you will want to keep coming back once you discover the food here. The flavors are spot on, you can't stop thinking about it. We ordered the bibimbap (trying to be, you know, good during these covid times, lol), beef short ribs, and cold buckwheat noodles (perfect in this Texas heat!) Couldn't wait until we got home and so busted some open while we were sitting in the car. You might find this a little pricey so be ready for that, but the bold flavors are so worth it! read more
One of our favorite Korean restaurants in NTX, we keep coming back to Maht Gaek! Today is Mother's Day and I get to choose the place - so I woke up in the mood for Korean and from there it was an easy decision to come to Maht Gaek. The dining room is very modern and always well attended by staff. It's fun to watch everyone cooking, sharing, and passing banchan around. The Budae Jigae (Korean Army Stew) is DELICIOUS - stuffed full of savory hot dogs, spam slices, bacon pieces, tofu, Kimchi and two blocks of raw Ramen noodles to be simmered over the table burner until the noodles are done. Enough for 3 people to share. Galbi are delicious - tender and beautifully marinated for the spice-averse among us. Service is attentive and professional, the food is always fresh and delicious, and the ambiance here is fun and friendly. 5 Happy Mother's Day meal stars! read more
In trying to break from my normal dietary routine and add Korean BBQ to my list of "tried it liked it" we picked Maht Gaek. The place is very unassuming on the outside but nicely decorated on the inside. We were immediately greeted and seated. The Yelp word was this place is busy, especially on the weekend. Not busy today- but we did watch it fill up with a lot of families as we ate. The food...so my first try at BBQ was premeditated toward the pork ribs. The "original" pork ribs in particular. We split a serving to keep it light and I immediately regretted it because I wanted the whole plate after first bite! We enjoyed having our "first time" Korean bbq ribs! My wife provided some good entertainment as she struggled with her chop sticks but made a quick learning curve for the better near the end of meal. It goes without saying we have a lot to learn in this eating style but plan to give it additional attempts (we had the already cooked pork ribs) and learn to cook our own meal at the table (Tim the indoor griller of meats). I liked seeing a lot of families cooking the family meal. As I mentioned earlier we we warmly greeted and graciously cared for during our entire meal. I really enjoy my visit! I came here from garland on the search for Budae Jiggae Stew. I asked if the Kimchi Stew was the English alternative for the Budae Stew just in case that was the English name for it. The lady didn't seem helpful when explaining, rushing me and asking if she can come back since I don't know what i want. I'm a server and I always attend people and never leave when my table guests are concerned and have questions about the menu. It was also my first time there so of course l had questions, im also not Korean and cannot read a Korean menu. Because I drove to Plano for Budae Jiggae stew, I had to settle with the Budae Hot Pot that was huge and made for two. They did not try to accommodate me for a smaller portion. I even asked if I can order the small lunch sized Kimchi Stew and just add sausage and they couldn't do that for me. It's whatever. For $32.99 the broth was mid. It wasn't anything special. The sausages were way too hard. They added way too much onions. Whenever I asked for Samgjang sauce, I probably pronounced it wrong but the water just chuckled at me. Not coming back. read more

The ribs are definitely the way to go here. Those alone are deserving of 5 stars. However, this review is based on the total experience. The service is great and everyone was very friendly and informative when we had questions about the menu. The food is certainly not bad. I had also ordered the braised pork hock and was not expecting it to be served cold. A quick google search about the dish and I learned that oftentimes it is served like that. It was my first time ordering this and I made a rookie mistake because I did not enjoy it. The bill was rather expensive for what we had ordered. Over $70 for the two entrees and I didn't enjoy mine. I had one of my wife's soy sauce covered ribs which was fantastic though! I would go back just for those. read more
Yo this place is dope and lives up to the hype. I haven't had this type of Korean hot pot before and it was pretty delicious. Per my friend's recommendation we ordered the Army Stew which had a nice mix of ingredients like kimchi, spam, sausage, ramen and more. We also ordered another side of ramen for round two and make use of that good sauce. One of their staples is the pork ribs, which you can tell because every table has an order of it. Nice and smoky flavor with tender meat. In my opinion neither the army stew or the ribs were that spicy, probably a medium depending on your tolerance. Only slight runny nose but no sensation of combustion. So the food is good, but that good good comes at a price. A meal here isn't necessarily cheap but as an occasional thing I would definitely come back to see what else they got on offer. Plus it's a bit different from the other Korean restaurants which is a plus. Would recommend. read more

Absolutely blown away by the quality of the food here! As I was leaving the restaurant, I was already wondering when I could come back. I cannot wait to return to try their larger dishes (bossam, squid pork belly bulgogi) with more people. Grilled pork ribs is the most popular dish, and I highly recommend for the flavor and tenderness. The ox bone soups are wonderfully healing - just don't forget to self-season with salt and pepper, as well as to use the sauce for the meat. Last but not least, I think Maht Gaek also has the best banchan I have had in Dallas. The delicious Korean food here accompanied by hot barley tea on a chilly day really, really hit the spot! read more

I've been looking for a bossam place since getting back from LA and found Maht Gaek! Their bossam is soo fresh and tastes soo clean! Not greasy. The grilled pork ribs are also a MUST and their gamja-tang does not disappoint! read more

Honestly this place was really good to me but I would rather come during lunch since the price is a bit more reasonable since dinner is almost twice the cost. I ended up getting there just in time before the rush and missed the 2 hour wait by like 5 minutes !! I got sat down pretty quickly and got our waters and menus quick. The workers are pretty quick since it's super busy and they need to get people in and out. I got the popular pork ribs in spicy flavor (was not spicy at all just gave it a little more flavor than the soy sauce flavor) and it was really good with the charcoal smokiness and slight burnt edges but I felt that most of my pieces were mostly bone and not enough meat. For only 5 bones with like 3 inches of meat on them for 23 bucks is a bit pricy. I got spicy bimbim and the cold water nyeng myun buckwheat noodles and it was soo good. I would defin come here again for the cold broth nyengmyun noodles for sure. I also really loved the side dishes that came with our food. I usually dont care for side dishes cause most places dont make it too good. This place is one of the few places I found every side dish to be really good. We ate up all the side dishes quickly and asked the server if we could get refills but the server said they ran out. I saw in other reviews about the side dish problem but I'm assuming it was just a white lie they tell the servers to tell the customers cause they need to rush ppl in and out and save on the side dishes for other customers. I really doubt they would just run out completely because at this point they should know how much to make for how busy they are and I came at a time where there is still a couple of hours left in the business opening and if they really ran out, that is going to create a bunch of angry customers and I doubt that's what they want. I did feel that as we were getting closer to our meal being done, a swarm of servers came to our table asking us if we are done, gave us the check and started cleaning everything so quickly before I could even process what just happened. We definitely felt rushed out but I wasn't mad since there was so many people waiting. So definitely this is not the place to come with s group of ppl and chill and eat for a long time. This place is exceptional. Really creative and delicious dishes served in generous portions, perfectly suited for family style eating. My mom has been telling me about how delicious this place is for years, but thanks to COVID, I only just now got around to trying it (via takeout) today. For our group of 4, we ordered the seafood tofu soup, seafood pancake, original pork ribs, and squid and pork belly bulgogi. We definitely could have fed at least 5 people. Everything was super delicious, with my personal favorites being the seafood pancake and the squid and pork belly bulgogi. I loved the texture of the pancake, and the flavor combo in the bulgogi was absolutely incredible and very unique. I also loved how beautifully they presented the dishes despite this being a takeout order! Maht Gaek is very reasonably priced for the portions and quality--can't wait to try dining in one day. read more
Stopped by on Sunday for lunch. There was one table left and the place was packed. Spent about two hours eating so by 2pm it looked sparse. The ribs are excellent. They are slightly sweet and salty with an amazing marinade that captures both flavors. It's a large bone with a sliver of pork that is completely perfect for scissor cutting. I like how they set up your table with small dishes (banchan) and salad with a bottle of water so you can start eating before the food comes. It gives you such a welcoming feeling. Chopsticks and silverware are self-serve at your table. Very consistent with what you receive in Korea. I also tried the oxtail soup and the soft tofu with seafood.
