My nail specialist (very pretty lady from Hungary) was super sweet, highly meticulous and skilled. * Mai salon has 2 pedicure chairs and 4 manicure stations. It's by appointment only, space is small and on the 2nd floor so if you go with a friend it's nice to have the privacy- felt like we had the whole nail spa to ourselves. Cons: * The salon is in an old and grundy building- so don't expect anything luxurious, modern, or high-end. Mai's appliances, tools, and furniture are also outdated. * Their shellac selection isn't consistent. While my polish came on thick and smooth, the burgundy polish my friend chose was horrible! It didn't match the color swatch she chose, came on super thin and patchy, and after only 4 days it started chipping! Just don't even bother. I purchased 2 shellac mani's via a deal. 1st mistake! The 1st time I used this deal the manicurist was late I had to wait 20 min for her + additional time for her to get settled in. The manicure wasn't amazing it was sub par and I vowed knowing that I purchased 2 mani's to not return just on my dissatisfaction with the whole salon and manicure process and cleanliness. Well desperate times call for desperate measures. Stuck without an appt on a Tuesday luckily for me they had availability. Here's to second chances! Right ? I came here to use a Groupon for a mani/pedi. My appointment was at 3pm on a summer Wednesday. Overall, I think it's a charming place, I would recommend it mostly because of the two ladies who worked on me. About my experience: The color selection isn't amazing and a lot of what they have looks old and a little crusty, so if you have a favorite color at home, bring it with you. They have Essie and OPI, but again, the selection isn't abundant. The massage chair was modern and functioned better than most salons. They weren't busy, so I was very glad to have both ladies work on me at the same time. It was a time saver, and I snuck out from work at lunch, so it was much appreciated. Diana (I hope this is her name) and Narcy were my technicians. Narcy engaged me in a very nice conversation during my visit (something you don't find at most nail salons). They were both darling and really made my experience pleasant. The work was fine for the price I paid with the groupon. I am a runner since 1985 (& have been getting mani/pedi's equally as long), & don't have the greatest feet but this was one of the worse mani/pedi's I've ever has! Nancy was 17 minutes late & I was about to leave & should have when she walked in. She did a RUSHED and sloppy, careless job because she had another appointment after me. I have a family, hence why I purchased the Groupon to begin with. A discount in price shouldn't mean a discount in services. The polish was old and lumpy as reflected on my toes. Please note that this is a small salon and on a Saturday there was only one tech so make sure to make an appointment. Made appointment for gel mani (remove old gel, apply new gel) for 10am, called 10:08am to say was running late, told to come on as was only doing manicure. Arrived 10:15am. Nail tech was doing another client. While waiting decided to get neck trim on my Afro as barber was free. Afterwards waited to see if still possible to do gel mani, then told to pick out color. Nail tech was bit cool, said she had to make a call. Waited with no news then decided would leave. While putting on coat nail tech comes and says she will do my mani (10:45an). Told her thought she couldn't take me anymore. Once seated, and nail gel (shellac actually) picked, she began removing old gel. She warmed up as we went along and by the end we'd shared stories on parenting, marriage and divorce. She's called Narci, barber is Rafic. As I shared I'd visited Rafic's homeland of Lebanon, and hairdresser's homeland, the Mauritius Islands, and has spoken with her in French, by the end we were taking selfies and photos. Everyone was nice. The gel job was good, neck trim good. The prices fair, neck trim $10, gel removal and new gel nails $40. The salon is a bit tattered, a bit shabby. I would maybe come back if visiting NYC and staying at a nearby hotel (as was the case). I feel if owner invested in upgrading salon the staff could get a lot more business. read more

I called to make my first appointment, and the women who answered the phone immediately was rude. I got over it and then asked if I can do any add ons (Groupon's are so discounted I try to see what else salons offer that I can purchase to show that I am a good customer). I wanted to get my eyebrows threaded and maybe a Gel mani instead--thats when she started getting loud with me and saying that I can't add anything on, in which I immediately replied that I will no longer be looking at them for their services and that I will be getting my money back. Best gel/shellac manicure EVER!! Not a single chip in over 2 weeks. I came here originally from a Groupon for a gel/shellac manicure, and it is by far the best I have ever had. Monica is an amazing technician and her gel manicures do not chip one little bit in over 2 weeks. I told her I don't want the surface of my nails buffed as they then tend to break when I go without gel, she listened, was very gentile and my nails are now longer and stronger than ever. Hello Yelpers, I bought a groupon yesterday for Mai Salon, I was able to make an appointment the same day. I got there at 5 p.m. and Joana was able to help me out. She was WONDERFUL! I have a lot of hair, it is fine and it is curly (although I straighten it most of the time). Joana was able to layer my hair according to my curls, so far every place I have been to NYC cuts my hair as if it was straight hair. She was able to do the proper technique and not only that, she gave me the best blow out in 17 minutes. I was on the chair at 5:00 p.m. and was out of the chair by 5:27 p.m. I am definitely coming back to Joana. I purchased a Groupon for a mani/pedi. The ladies here were friendly and sweet, but everything else about this place was awful. The utensils they use (nail file, etc.) are USED and not clean. I asked if I could have a new file (they are the disposable kind), and she told me they didn't have others - meaning they literally use the same disposable nail file on everybody, which is a recipe for infection. The polish selection was minimal, and all the polish is old and clumping. My pedicure was not thorough, and when I got home, I realized that my feet were not smooth at all and in fact looked and felt exactly the same as when I entered the salon. The polish was applied unevenly so some spots were darker than others, and although I had the same color applied to both my hands and feet, the color on my toes looks about twice as dark as on my fingers. I only wish I had inspected everything more closely while I was still at the salon. I would recommend getting your mani/pedi elsewhere. read more

This was probably the worst manicure/ pedicure I've ever gotten. The person doing my nails was extremely fast and quite sloppy. I'm fairly confident I could have done a better job myself. I found this place dirty and very outdated. After my manicure was completed, I was letting them dry when I noticed another staff person with their feet up where all of their hair tools were located- extremely unsanitary and other staff just sitting on their phones not acknowledging phone calls or anyone walking in. I used a Groupon for a haircut. I wanted a trim to get off the dead ends of my current hairstyle which is long layers, angled in the front. I asked for an inch off but 2-3 inches were taken off, especially on the top layers. The layers are very blunt and uneven with random short pieces that don't blend in. The two sides of my hair don't match either and its super noticeable when I wear my hair straight. I feel like she really hacked into my hair. Overall, its a very unskilled, clumsy cut and the blow out was not great either, but it definitely hid all the mistakes so I didn't noticed how bad it was until I styled my hair at home. Mai Salon was absolutely a godsend to me. I had recently come back to the States from a vacation and I was anxious to get my roots touched up and hair styled. They were able to fit me in same day which really made my day. Mercy gave me a wonderful mani-pedi while the dye was in my hair. I've been looking for years for a salon that offered both services. I'm short on time, like most people, and I was thrilled to get both done. Nariman is a lovely and gracious stylist. She listened to what I was looking for and gave me several different options that were suitable for my hair. Nariman was adept at assessing and fixing my unevenly colored hair. I was badly in need of a cut, conditioning, and root touch up. She showed me how my color needed to be carried out to my ends and actually ended up doing a color correction while leaving most of my highlights intact. She did an amazing job on my hair and I love the cut too as she gave me flattering layers around my face and in the back. Nariman also gave me a deep conditioning treatment. After all her care, my hair is now super shiny, bouncy and resilient. She gave me some good suggestions on how to style my hair in this brutal summer humidity. I am so thrilled with my new look and won't hesitate to see her again. Nariman and Mercy had me feeling like a princess at their salon. I felt pampered and well-taken care of for a few hours. My days of not writing reviews has to come to an end after this particular experience. I had made an appointment at Mai salon for a haircut and root touch up on a Tuesday. (I had an event on a Friday). They called the Saturday before and cancelled my appointment because...the stylist had an "emergency". Ok....we rescheduled for Friday (the day of my event). A few hours before my appointment, the stylist calls and says she "has an emergency" AGAIN???? I asked for the manager's number. Called the manager (of course he didn't answer), and mentioned that I was very disappointed and would be giving a bad review. Wouldn't you know..walla....the hairstylist called me and all of a sudden her "emergency" is gone? She said she would keep my appointment. Well...no....no thank you. She then said if I left a bad review that "God was going to get me". (I'll take my chances. That's not how God "works".) Then the manager called me back and said she really did have an emergency and that her husband was in the hospital. Hmnnn....When the stylist called me the first time, the reason for her "emergency" was that she "overbooked her clients". (They should have spoken to each other to get their stories straight before making the phone calls.) I wouldn't trust this place. If this is the way they run their business, I'd be skeptical of their other skills. read more

Honestly not impressed.. -The lady that gave me a gel manicure seems to be the one that runs the salon. Her gel (OPI) application is HORRIBLE. Some of the gel wrinkled and instead of fixing it, she put the top coat over it, hoping it would smooth out-but it didn't. -Also, FYI, If you buy a Groupon your are only allowed to use the OPI not the CND Shellac, apparently she charges more for CND Shellac in general (I figured that out as a customer was going back and forth with her about pricing and Groupon coupons). -I used a Groupon and she seems to be a little confused on how Groupon works (asking me how much I paid, etc.). -I also had to ask her to put a paper towel down in the UV light machine because some girl just finished getting a gel pedicure and I told the lady I am not putting my hands in that and she remarked "the girl just got a pedicure her feet are clean"-REALLY?! idk maybe I am a big germophobe. I came here with a Groupon deal for a basic mani pedi and had a wonderful experience. My appointment was at 3 pm on a Wednesday, and I was the only customer at the salon. Both the technician and the other woman working went out of their way to make sure I was comfortable, including asking my preference about the air conditioning. Definitely the best mani pedi I've ever had; the technician used nice warm towels, an amazing smelling scrub, and the tool she used to buff my heels was so soft and way less uncomfortable than what I've experienced at other places. Do not get your nails done here! I should have read yelp reviews before getting my Groupon. The nail salon area shares the same space as the hair salon so you're just breathing in fumes the whole time. One of my nails has a weird hair stuck in it, another has bubbles trapped, and another is uneven. I moved to NYC about a month ago and was so stressed out about finding a new hair salon. I put it off until the gray was so bad I was starting to look a little like Barbara Bush. I found a Groupon for Mai Salon and bought it for a haircut, color, glaze and style. When I called to make the appt they could not have been more accommodating. At first they didnt have the appt I wanted, which was fine so I made it for a different day. They told me they would try to get me in earlier and the next day they called and let me know there was an appt available. When I got there I met Maria, who was friendly, easygoing, and so helpful in picking out a color for my hair. She listened to everything I said, cut my hair exactly as I wanted and was friendly and cheerful the whole time. I had bought two shellac manicure deals. I used one in May. The manicure was done fine, but the shellac manicure which usually stays for atleast 15 days start coming off from edge of nails right after a week. I have got shellac so many times at different salons and this was my first experience where it didnt stay for 15 days. Further, I called up for some question to this salon and they were so rude to answer me. The lady there refused to tell me her name when I told her that I will write review about your customer service. I have never had this horrible customer service.
