It was the final evening of our vacation and our friends suggested music and drinks after an early dinner. He has been a fan of Johnny Valentine and said he was playing at the Mai Tai Bar in the Royal Hawaiian. The Bar is located in the back patio area that faces the beach. Arriving at 6:30pm, there was a line to be seated and when we were seated, we were at a nice table facing the beach, but we were on the opposite side where the stage Johnny was performing. Also, we were next to the bar and it was quite noisy. After ordering our drinks, which I got the Royal Sunset Ale, we spotted a table near the stage and asked our waitress if we could move there. She checked and said we could move there. It was a nice center table about 20ft from the stage and we could hear Johnny perform without the bar noise. Johnny is Hawaii's premier entertainer, who is Bruno Mars' uncle, is known for his vocal range and guitar skills. He performed Hawaiian songs and had a hula dancer on stage with him and he covered popular songs. He also came by our table during an intermission and graciously took pictures with us. This place was incredible! We did not like the Monkey Pod Mai Tais at all, but this place wow! We came twice while we were here, just so we could say we had them all. My favorite was the "White Washed" it has a banana/coconut foam and a hint of nutmeg, I had it both times. What a great lunch today at the Mai Tai Bar in Waikiki. Nick was our amazing server assisted by Shelton and Tumo. The entertainment was fantastic and the food simply amazing. The Royal Mai Tai and Margarita was also perfectly made. We had the south shore shrimp appetizer which was so tasty with taro chips. We make it a point to come here for a drink on every trip to Waikiki. This trip we stayed at the hotel and made a stop at the Mai Tai bar every day. All of the staff are so welcoming and friendly - we were lucky enough to have the same couple of serves across all of our visits. The seating area is casual and relaxing. The drinks are always delicious! I think sitting at the bar just after the sunset rush was my favorite. The bartenders were all great fun, the playlist was a great mix of local artists and pop music. When we did, it was close to closing and I believe the kitchen had closed. That wasn't an issue, as we were walking from dinner, purely on own unique "hit up all the mai tai spots" bar crawl. The bar was lively - appeared to be a blend of locals and a few visitors. We decided to sit as close as possible to the beach. The lights gave it a sultry, pink vibe. Our server was great - we didn't talk too much to him outside of ordering (very strong) mai tais and grabbing the check. They weren't the best ones on our adventure, but a close second. Super boozy, so I def was feeling good after 2. They probably were the most pricey of our entire adventure ($20ish per cocktail) but they taste like a heavy pour. However, one afternoon despite not being very busy it took more than 30 minutes for me to get an order of truffle fries. I suspect the server took a break and forgot about me. Drinks are good. The bar food is so-so. The seared ahi salad was excellent, although it seemed like they put the dressing in the bottom of the bowl and then ahi, cabbage, and arugula on top instead of putting the dressing in a ramekin on the side or pouring it over the salad. The cheese board was expensive but not much of a selection. Two different bries and a cheddar. I thought the chicken fingers were mediocre. So. I've been going to this place for years. Recently they decided to change their award winning Mai Tai recipe. Maybe they think their tourist clientele wouldn't notice or care if they did. I come to the Mai tai bar. Such a cool, funky, vibe, pink umbrellas, right up against the beach. I retired from drinking a long time ago, so I asked the bartender if he could do a virgin mai Tai. "SURE, BRUDDAH... NO PROBLEM." They bring the drink to my table, and it was amazing. It looked just like a "real" Mai tai, and it tasted fantastic. . I didn't miss the booze at all. It tasted like, Hawaii! I'm sitting there, at the edge of the beach, enjoying my drink with a big smile on my face, thinking, "this is the way to end a vacation." it was so good, I ordered a second one. They came out to 11 bucks apiece, They would've been 20 if I would've had the booze in it. But you know something? It was reasonable! Your Yelper asked for "the most touristy drink" and was (unsurprisingly) rewarded with a Mai Tai. Likewise for Mrs. Yelper. Delicious. I've made them at home but let's just say the environment adds a lot to the enjoyment. Second drink for me was Blue Hawaii (vodka, rum, vodka, rum, vodka, rum, and a little blue curacao, pineapple, lemon juice). Oy. For Mrs. Yelper I got a Pina Colada because it's so beachy. I think we got appetizers but don't recall. The location, service, quality of drinks, and just knowing we were in the shadow of Diamond Head was all we needed. Live music was... keeping some of the crowd happy. We were sadly seated by the entrance on the farthest end from the beach, but at least it was nice to be outside at all. The only reason I've docked a star is because we came back on the last day of our trip and were outright ignored standing at the kiosk waiting to be seated.
