Our service was great and the food was good. My fiancé and I ordered the calamari, scallops, a few rolls, and sashimi. The scallops with seaweed salad was recommended by our waiter and hands down the best thing we ate that night. The scallops were perfectly cooked with the right amount of umami flavor. The seaweed salad was fresh and balanced the butteriness of the scallops. The rolls were as expected, nothing spectacular but still good and at a great price point. Another colleague dinner adventure here to share. The happy hour pineapple cold sake was quite good. Everyone got sushi save one person who got sake Mac n cheese and gyoza. I got the spicy salmon roll and another roll that was supposed extra spicy with jalapeños. The salmon roll was fine. The extra spicy roll was meh. The jalapeños had heat of a bell pepper. Food is good enough. Service was extremely questionable...especially the hostess. We called ahead to ask how long the wait would be for a group of 7 and the she told us that there was no wait. We arrived around 7:40pm when more than 80% of tables were empty yet the hostess refused to sit us until all 7 of us were there. We decided to sit at the bar while waiting for the rest of our group. They discouraged us from ordering an appetizer at the bar while waiting for our friends, and we basically had to beg to order something. Our appetizer was out by 7:52pm, when the majority of the restaurant was still empty and they would not sit us. At 8:06pm, the hostess came up to me and said "it's going to get busy" and that our party had to get there within 15 min or else she would not sit us together. At that point the majority of our group had actually arrived and again, the majority of the restaurant was STILL empty yet she was threatening to not let us sit together. The rest of our friends finally arrived at 8:22pm, and BY NO SURPRISE the restaurant was still empty and therefore the hostess was 'gracious' enough to actually seat us. Food was fine, the servers were also fine, and the bartender (Oscar) did a great job keeping us entertained while we were waiting at the bar for 40min trying to get someone to seat us at an empty restaurant. I understand that there are rules to abide i.e. not allowing a group to sit unless the entire party is there. But do not brag about how busy your restaurant is when that was clearly a lie, and do not tell us you're not going to seat us together when your restaurant is empty. Had high hopes for this place. Should have known better when I see dim sum on the menu in a "Japanese" restaurant, and I was the only Asian person dining there. I tried to play it safe by ordering the shrimp tempura, crunchy shrimp sushi roll and the spicey cucumber salad. I asked the server if it was spicey and he said it wasn't very spicey. I thought how bad can you mess up cucumber salad, well, I took a couple of bites and left the rest. I am so used to having namasu dressing (vinegar) in my cucumber salad, not a garlic flavored shoyu dressing. I even told my server that I didn't like it. I guess they don't care because it remained on my bill. I put my credit card on the bill and it sat there for over 10 minutes and I had to flag down one of the staff to take my money so I could get out of there. My bartender was a gem, a true delight. Polite, conversant, but not invasive. Didn't grab her name, but purple hair and exposed tats. I got the spicy cucumber salad - YUM, but super spicy. I also got the Sweet Miso roll which had jalapeños, torched salmon, shrimp tempura and asparagus. I loved that this roll was not overly spicy, yet had complexity to it. PSA for women: While dining with my daughter, a man approached us, complimented our outfits, then proceeded to sit down uninvited. Feeling uncomfortable, I inquired if he worked there, to which he claimed he did. Despite this, I still felt uneasy with him at our table. I asked him to order soup for us, assuming he was a staff member, but he revealed he was actually a part owner. He and the waiter returned. The waiter asked 3 soups? I said no just two. The man sat down again without invitation, and when questioned, he suggested he ordered the soup to join us.
