The zucchini bao was fantastic - so tender and lightly battered and fried to just add a hint of crunch. The cilantro relish topping was a fun & refreshing contrast to the umami in the sauce. We also tried the beef tobanyaki which was also new on the appetizer menu. Highly reccomend and I will be getting it again! Tender pieces of filet meat sautéed with mushrooms and onions in a wafu sauce. Also ordered our usual mandatory appetizer: the spring rolls (duh) One loud table which was slightly annoying, but other than that ambiance was pretty on par with a typical Friday night at a nicer restaurant. A little birdie told me they're rolling out a new cocktail menu which I am VERY excited for. Had something to celebrate so decided to do it at Roy's. I haven't been back to the original Roy's for 8 years it's good to see some of the workers still there. I found an old school coupon for the famous chocolate soufflé- whose price has increased to $17!!!! Crazy! We ordered the sunset prix fix $55 and the regular prix fix $79 just to try a variety of foods and to get the famous chocolate soufflé. The total for two was about $170 including tip. Of the 2 prix fix the $55 wasn't bad actually for the 3 course- I would upgrade to soufflé for an additional $8 more. The $79 prix fix was unique steal fondue but you only get 3 slices of the steak- the $55 had 7oz, but a portion of it was fatty. Will most likely go back for the $55 and perhaps the happy hour menu on another day. I was looking forward to Friday night musician but they also weren't there.... read more

When our daughter and her family moved to Hawaii over 17 years ago, we made it our annual tradition to visit Roy's Hawaii Kai for a special treat. We had always enjoyed the breathtaking view, the delicious food and the outstanding attention to detail with every aspect of our dining experience there. Unfortunately, this year (January 11), we had a very different experience. I had made reservations for the seven of us several weeks prior, however, upon our arrival we were seated at a corner table, surrounded on three sides by the kitchen counter, the back wall and a side post. Prior to being seated, our host asked us if this was acceptable, I immediately said, "No." We expected a table that we could all comfortably sit around in an easily accessible spot (as we had always had previously). The only option offered was to go downstairs and sit outside where we were told it was expected to rain. For the sake of salvaging our celebration, I acquiesced and we sat at the table offered. Since the servers could not walk behind four of us, plates, drinks, etc. were continually passed to those of us "trapped." While the food was excellent as always, the experience was far from it. I apologized to the family and assured them that we would not be coming back. As the months have passed since this disappointing experience, I have wrestled with whether to share this experience, fearing it would be a wasted effort. I decided to be hopeful that this message would not fall on deaf ears, but be accepted as valuable customer feedback. read more

We appreciate the handwritten card, every staff member who came to wish us a happy anniversary, the complimentary pannacotta, and a gift certificate to use for a return visit! I also noticed at the table next to us, a party hat was placed prior to arrival of the little birthday girl! The expansive wraparound windows afforded us sunset ocean views and a game of guess-the-cloud-shape. Food is delicious and beautifully plated. We started with house edamame and HK crab cakes. We had a wonderful dinner at Roy's in Hawaii Kai. It was to celebrate my birthday and retirement. The servers Cal and Tehana were so accommodating and helpful, and really made our dinner memorable. The view from Roy's in Hawaii Kai overlooks a bay and has a perfect vantage point for a beautiful sunset. There's ample dining space on two floors and a cool koi pond in the lobby. For dinner we ordered a Japan Hamachi Crudo to start and a fish trio, seared butterfish and a Keiki grilled chicken for a main courses. We completed the meal with a chocolate soufflé and they provided two different Panna cotta desserts to celebrate my birthday and retirement! If that wasn't enough, the kitchen prepared a chocolate chip ice cream sandwich for my daughter! It was an amazing meal with a spectacular view and the best service one could ask for. This was the most memorable meal for our trip to Oahu. I would certainly recommend Roy's in Hawaii Kai over the one located in Waikiki. BTW, they all have different menus because the chefs are allowed to develop different menus for the various locations. There are a few items that are standard for all locations. On our last night of our August-September, 2023 Oahu vacation, DJ and I dined at the original Roy's Restaurant, Roy's Hawaii Kai, the first location of Chef Roy Yamaguchi's high-end chain serving Hawaiian fusion fare in a casually modern setting. Via OpenTable, we made reservations for Saturday evening, September 9, at 9:00 PM. Easy peasy. Booking reservations via the online restaurant reservation service was super convenient. After easily finding parking in the lot, we walked through a finely landscaped front yard and, upon entry through the front door, were welcomed by a serene koi pond at the bottom of the stairs that led us up to the main dining room. The comfortable open kitchen dining room provided panoramic views of Maunalua Bay and Diamond Head. We were seated at a white linen clothed table nearby the bar at the top of the staircase. Roy's offers a culinary journey in fine dining with a menu focused on fresh seafood and some steakhouse dishes, blending Hawaiian and Asian flavours in contemporary style of cooking. Below is what we had for dinner: In lieu of a complimentary basket of bread and butter to kick off our meal, we were served a nice bowl of spicy edamame, which I found to be a fitting prelude to the eclectic blend of Hawaiian, Japanese, and Classic French cuisine that we were about to enjoy. Tempura Shimeji Mushroom ($17) - For a starter from the Vegetarian Menu, we shared this delicious appetizer of golden crispy fried mushrooms that were drizzled with spicy aioli. YUM! Mongolian Style Vegetable Stir-Fry with Crispy Tofu ($20) - Also from the Vegetarian Menu, for his main dish, DJ had this plate of fried cubes of tofu mixed with a small medley of veggies. The mixed vegetables were mostly onion slivers, a few slices of green bell pepper and zucchini, shoestring carrots and very little bean sprouts, topped with a small handful of micro greens and a nicely uniformed mound of white rice. Misoyaki Butterfish ($56) - I ordered this signature, world renowned dish for my entrée - a tender and rich fish dish, marinated in miso and served over forbidden black rice and a sweet ginger wasabi butter sauce. The silky, buttery, melt-in-your-mouth black cod was sophisticated and oh, so ono! Roy's Signature Chocolate Soufflé ($14) - We were served this decadent dessert on the house. This chocolate SWEET TREAT was rich in flavour and airy in texture. Service was exceptional. Right from our arrival, we were greeted with warmth and friendly hospitality. As the night went on, it was becoming apparent that I was not feeling well. Our waiter was so caring that he even brought out a few different bottles of fever reducers to offer medication to me. He was very sweet. An unforgettable dining experience we enjoyed at Roy's Hawaii Kai. We went for Father's Day's/Birthday and the service was really good. They are very attentive. My brother and I had the lamb /lobster combo. The lobster was a little salty and I couldn't cut the lamb with the knife. Neither could my brother. His lamb was undercooked cooked and mine was good. The taste was good I just couldn't get over neither being able to cut with the knife. It's a great environment for parties or a romantic dinner. The place can get loud if it's busy but you can manage. I've eaten here before but never had the lamb. Not sure if I would try the lamb again. read more

Always enjoyed coming to this location over the years. Though this particular time had 2 misses that would've made this a 5-star experience. It was mom's birthday, and they had a little birthday hat in the middle of the table to signify this occasion. The server and food runner/busser attending our table were both very polite and efficient. The first mishap was with the tasting menu. The great part is that, not everyone on the table needs to partake in this menu, though 2 out of the 6 people in our party wanted to try it. About 5 minutes after taking our table's order, the server comes back to mention that the chef is not making that tonight, so that they would need to try something else. Perhaps flipping over that menu in the book, or mention of it not being available in pre-shift to communicate down to the rest of the staff, to then advise the customer before ordering would prevent a little bit of disappointment. Nevertheless, the food for the table came out in a timely manner. As the years have gone by, I've noticed that the dishes are all very brown in color. Brown protein, brown rice, brown sauce. There's a pop of color here and there but I personally would like my food to be a little more colorful in presentation. Dessert course came around and our table ordered pretty much 1 of each on the menu. Know that the hot items on the dessert menu take about 30 minutes, so you may want to order that when your dinner entree course is dropped on the table. The same 2 people who had ordered the tasting menu in the beginning, then decided to order the Halo-Halo because they wanted something cold and refreshing. To their disappointment, the server brought the items, mentioned that they ran out of ube ice cream and proceeded to drop the check at the same time so its like there was no opportunity to rebuttal or complain. Again, a little bit of communication beforehand would've set the expectations up a little better. All in all, a great location, with great views of the sunset. This experience just needed a little bit of fine-tuning to be a 5-star. read more

Very small, intimate gathering of family & close friends. Everything tasted so good. My favorite has to be the crabcake in the appetizer sampler. So flavorful inside and crispy outside. We had an excellent anniversary dinner at the original Roy's in Hawaii Kai! It's been a little while since we came out to this Roys, the location in Waikiki is actually closer to us, but I just hate dealing with a parking situation in Waikiki. Dinner reservations were made for four (the kids tagged along). We had to wait a few minutes after we checked in, but we enjoyed looking at the Koi at the bottom of the stairs. The host then took us upstairs to our table. Our server was Brandon who was excellent and very knowledgeable. We ordered the crabcake appetizer to start out, tasty but slightly under seasoned. Both my husband and I ordered the butterfish with the forbidden black rice, my daughter ordered the blackened Ahi and my son ordered from the kids menu the teriyaki chicken. The food was well prepared, the butterfish was excellent, moist and very tasty. I always enjoy the black forbidden rice, which you actually cannot get at the Waikiki location. The blackened ahi is also an excellent choice as well. Lightly seared, sashimi style inside with a butter sauce. The kids entrée was teriyaki chicken with rice, celery, stick, and carrot stick with a square cheese quesadilla to start. For dessert, we ordered the chocolate lava cake x2 which does take 30 minutes to prepare so it needs to be ordered in advance. We got a Matcha Panna cotta complementary for our anniversary. My hubby made reservations for our anniversary dinner here on 7/7. We arrived promptly at 6:30 and were seated right away on the second floor. The view was spectacular, especially at sunset. On one side of the room is the open kitchen. On the other side are views of the ocean. Things didn't start out smoothly. He ordered a Local Kine Mule $17 (vodka, mango syrup, ginger beer, lime juice, mint), but they brought him a Lychee Sake-Tini instead. We notified our waiter and he brought us the correct drink. They started us off with complimentary seasoned soy beans. We ordered the Dim Sum Style Canoe for Two $42 (Szechuan pork ribs, chicken spring rolls, seared shrimp sticks, tempura spicy ahi maki). For our entrees we got the Crispy New Zealand Tai Snapper $55 (crown noodle yakisoba, tomato sambal) and Yama's Mama's Beef Meatloaf $37 (tempura onion rings, dashi mushroom gravy). For dessert we got the Banana Sweet Bread Pudding "Panipopo" $15 (haupia sauce, caramel). It takes half an hour to make the Panipopo, so put in the order ahead of time. They also gave us a free anniversary dessert, strawberry flan. Dessert was the best part of dinner. Both desserts were exceptional. The meatloaf was good and the tai snapper was ok. The fish was firm and flaky, a little dry. The sauce was a little vinegary for my liking. Service was on par for fine dining. They kept the water glasses full and the floor manager stopped by a few times to see how everything was going. They gave us an anniversary card and a $25 gift card to use the next time we're there. Although it's not right by the ocean, you can still see the water on the other side of the road. Miso butterfish can't be beat. It's their signature dish of the restaurant. It's cooked to perfection. Definitely worth it to get the larger portion because you'll be wanting more if you get the smaller size. The Mac nut crusted fish was equally delectable! The Slow Braised Honey Mustard Grilled Beef Short Ribs were soft, and I liked the flavor of the honey mustard sauce on top, but the meat was a bit on the dry side. Yama's Mama's Beef Meatloaf & Surf was a bit gamey for me, and sadly, the shrimp didn't have good seasoning. I liked Roy's Signature Chocolate Soufflé because it was crunchy on the outside but soft inside, and the chocolate was melting from the center! I was very disappointed with their Halo Halo. On the menu, it says it comes with "Ube Ice Cream, Key Lime Panna Cotta, and Leche Flan", but our Halo Halo came with Vanilla Ice Cream without informing us. We ordered it because it was supposed to have Ube Ice Cream, which is a very important ingredient in Halo Halo, but they didn't even tell us it would be replaced with Vanilla Ice Cream that night. This was very unacceptable. The Halo Halo was not traditional style, and the base was strawberry shaved ice. The only thing I liked was the leche flan. We wanted to see the sunset, but all the curtains stayed closed until after the sun had already gone down. I asked if they could open them so we could enjoy the sunset, but they told me they only open the curtains after sunset. Since Roy's Hawaii Kai is famous for its beautiful ocean view, I did not understand why we could not enjoy the sunset. Roy's was ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! I was very excited to try this restaurant and my expectations were exceeded. The restaurant is clean and well decorated with a simplistic design. We sat on the 2nd floor and I personally really enjoyed the open kitchen layout, as I was able to see the chefs prepping and plating meals. I was particularly excited for the 3 course meal that they offer. The amount of food that they give seems small but it is pretty filling. We first tried the shrimp and short rib as our first course. The short rib was tender and flavorful with the shrimp being light and refreshing. Next we tried the macadamia nut crusted fish with beef (I can't remember the name of the beef in particular) as our second dish. I wasn't a huge fan of the beef because it was pretty fatty, but that is a personal preference as the flavor was still tasty. The fish itself was the star of the dish and was extremely unique! The fish itself was tender and flavorful and the macadamia nut crust added extra flavor and crispiness. The dessert course was a matcha crème brûlée and our waiter was kind enough to bring us their chocolate soufflés as well to try since he mentioned that was one of their most popular desserts. The matcha crème brûlée was light and creamy, but the chocolate soufflé was rich and fluffy, making it obvious as to why it is their most popular dessert. Made reservation on Opentable. We were seated upstairs where the best views are (or would be if it wasn't already dark). We arrived after dark so no sunset for us. Ambiance nice. They quickly brought water and edamame to the table. The savory edamame was seasoned and a perfect pairing to our sweet drink. I started with Roy's Signature Hawaiian Martini which had vanilla vodka, coconut rum infused with pineapples. Absolutely delicious- highly recommend! Not as seeet as you might think. For appetizers, we ordered the chicken spring rolls and the crispy zucchini. Both were overly generous portions. We should have only ordered one! The spring rolls were hearty and came 6 mini to an order. They sat on a sweet sauce that complimented the hearty filling. Not dry at all!!! We both liked the crispy zucchini better. It came four to an order but one each would have been better. We were already getting full. For our main we each got the fish trio. We also asked about substitutions for the white rice and got the seasoned black rice instead. The butter fish melted in my mouth and was absolutely perfect!! I ate it all! The macadamia nut encrusted fish was a swordfish that night and a little dry. But it was served with a lovely rich lobster sauce. The blackened ahi was equally fresh and delicious. Although completely full by now, We splurged for two desserts. She got the bread pudding which we thought was the best bread pudding either of us ever had. The ice cream the Carmel sauce the banana bread base- what a combo! I got the cold halo halo dessert and it was completely opposite and very refreshing. It had so much to it that there was a different flavor with every bite- it was a party in your mouth! The manager stopped over to check in on us. He explained the menu in Waikiki is different. We enjoyed Easter Brunch at Roy's this Sunday morning. It was a breath of fresh air to have such an attentive staff. From the check in to walking past the bar to taking our orders and clearing our plates, every single staff member was attentive, cheerful, sincere, and happy to serve us. The food was outstanding. We started with the Crispy Zucchini on toasted bao bun with house XO sauce. The light and airy tempura batter on the zucchini was salted delicately to bring out the zucchini and the XO sauce complimented nicely. I had the crab cake eggs benedict and my husband enjoyed the amazingly tender 48 hour sous vide short rib steak. We all laughed when the waiter obligatorily brought a steak knife to the table. My daughter and I went to Roy's in Hawai'i Kai on a whim, which is rare for us since we hardly ever make the drive to that side of the island. We had actually planned to eat somewhere else, but when we arrived it felt more like a daytime spot and not the kind of place we wanted for an evening meal. I suddenly remembered how much I used to love the chocolate souffle from Roy's, and I realized I hadn't been there in over twenty years. That alone was enough to convince us to head over. We called ahead to see if there was seating at the bar since we assumed a table was unlikely, but they did have room and we were perfectly happy being at the bar anyway. Our bartender and server, Matthew, was exceptional. He gave thoughtful recommendations, especially with the wine. We ordered a bottle of Pinot Grigio and started with sushi. The dragon roll and the hamachi carpaccio were both incredible. The flavors were clean, fresh, and beautifully balanced. We also had the butterfish paired with forbidden black rice, which was amazing. The zucchini appetizer was another standout, so simple but so good. We had edamame and a tempura dish as well, and everything was consistently delicious. For dessert, we ordered the chocolate souffle that I remembered so well, and Matthew brought out a dessert wine that paired with it perfectly. The souffle was like heaven. It's hard to describe just how good it was. Rich, warm, and comforting in a way that brought back memories. Something worth noting is that this Roy's in Hawai'i Kai is the original and the only one still independently owned. From what we were told, the other Roy's locations are no longer owned by Roy himself, so if you want the true, classic experience, this is the place. It felt good to support local, to support the staff who clearly care about what they do, and to enjoy a place that still honors its roots. Everyone we encountered was kind, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. The overall experience was wonderful, and I would absolutely recommend making the drive out to Hawai'i Kai. Especially around the holidays, when everything feels expensive anyway, I honestly didn't feel like our meal was any pricier than other places in town. If we hadn't ordered a bottle of wine, it would have been very reasonable considering how much food we tried and how much we enjoyed every single dish. It was my first time coming to Roy's Hawaii Kai. I have been to the Royals in San Diego and it is very different yet similar. I still love the chocolate raspberry soufflé, which is one of my favorite but this time I got the honey mustard, short rib, the vegetables were perfectly cooked The crunch was still there. I hate when I bite into a vegetable and it's all mushy, but this is not the case. Everything was perfectly cooked. If you would like to try a restaurant other than steakhouse that are popular, I would suggest Roys Hawaii they specialize in different dishes for you to try. read more

The beef was tender but I asked for sauce since there was very little on the plate and it was a bit dry but kind of expected when there are many orders of the same kind. Service was ok. 11/12/25 Honolulu, HI We had a great dinner at Roy's Hawaii Kai and really enjoyed the experience overall. The ambience is warm and upscale without being stuffy, and the service throughout the evening was attentive and very friendly. Because the restaurant split our bill, the printed prices were half of what we actually paid--so the real prices were double what appears on the receipt. Here's what we ordered with the accurate pricing: * Black Ahi Appetizer - $33.00 (excellent starter) * Martinis (Tanqueray) - $15.00 each * Hendrick's Martini - $15.00 * Avissi Prosecco - $13.00 * Poke - $29.00 * Farm House Salad - $27.00 * Filet Mignon - $68.00 (perfectly cooked--one of the highlights of the night) * Meatloaf & Shrimp - $59.00 (the meatloaf was outstanding; the shrimp were just okay) * Short Ribs - $62.00 * Side: 4-Piece Shrimp - $16.00 * Soufflé - $17.00 The food overall was very good. The meatloaf surprised us in the best way--rich, flavorful, and truly memorable. The filet mignon was cooked perfectly and worth every penny. The shrimp, both in the entrée and as a side, were decent but not as impressive as the other dishes. Service was excellent from start to finish, and the atmosphere is exactly what you want for a nice night out in Hawaii Kai--comfortable, polished, and relaxing. We'd definitely return. Service was great. They cater very well to KIDS (we had both a toddler and a baby). Beautiful views, nice indoor & outdoor seating, and very quick service. Food was average however, I was let down by a lot of the flavors /: the only thing that left me wanting more of was their Frying Dragon Sushi Roll (this was delicious and great sauces). read more

I rarely get to go out and enjoy a restaurant meal. But I finally had a chance tonight to visit Roy's Hawaii Kai and it was an exceptional experience. I arrived early and it wasn't too busy. The staff was extremely attentive -- from refilling my water to bringing extra sauces and dinner enhancements that I didn't even ask for. Matt was my server for the evening, and he made me feel so welcome from start to finish, ensuring my dinner experience at Roy's was a superb one. And it was. We came here right after our evening Makapuu walk and what a way to end the night. Impromptu dinner with exceptional friendly service. Food was excellent and the ambiance was perfect to wrap up our date. Definitely see myself coming back for a celebration. read more

Roy's is always a great dinner night! Perfect choice for couples date night and also birthday celebrations! Service - love that the restaurant workers all greet you as you enter. Our server was attentive, we were a bit bummed that there was no escargot on the menu for appetizer, but the server gave us an appetizer that was delish- short rib gyoza. Water and ice tea was always topped off immidiately. They also boxed our leftovers and gave us a big bag to carry it home. Atmosphere/Ambiance - they have a cute Christmas tree in the lobby. We dined early which is super nice for a sunset view but it can get bright with the sun even when the shades are down and it was a little hot, once the sun sets they open the shades which allows good lighting for pics! Food- food is always great, we had one dish that wasn't cooked to the right temperature but it was fixed immidiately. The 14 oz smoked rib eye plate is a bit messy, the dish seems to big for the plate, the steak is on top of the risotto so as you're cutting it the risotto is sliding to the edge of the plate, would have preferred it to be set on a bigger plate with the risotto on the side, the plate also has a lot of sauce not sure if it's from the steak or the kale but it got a bit messy with cutting the steak. The kids meals under 12 are amazing here they start them with a cheese quesadillas slices with grapes, celery, carrot, salad , a few choices for entree which include salmon or braised beef, and a cookie ice cream sandwich for dessert $16 the salmon was cooked perfectly! Dessert - chocolate soufflé is always amazing! No more yelp check in offer though but it's still delicious they also had a pumpkin soufflé for the season and pineapple upside down cake. Their complementary cookies and creme panna cotta was delicious too! Parking - there's lots of parking right outside the restaurant, the nearest establishment (used to be scratch kitchen/outback) is empty for now so there's tons of parking available. Wanted to come to this location because it's the original location. The view was incredible even when not seated right at the window. The service was great, the host checked us in promptly and our waiter was very attentive. I even accidentally spilled a glass of water and they were quick to clean it up and fix up our table. We enjoyed everything we ordered. They warned us when we got our main courses that the desserts can take up to 30 minutes so we ordered them early and glad we did. The pineapple upside down cake was super delicious, I just wish there was a bit more pineapple. Between two people we shared two appetizers (sashimi and crab cakes- not pictured but delicious), two entrees and two desserts. We left full but not too full. read more

Surprised that this place is still good. Haven't been here a while and was worried that the food quality would have gone downhill but I forgot how good the original Roy's still is. Super consistent. Started with the crabcakes which were really tasty. The meatloaf is a classic and still way better than other newer places that try to do fancy meatloaf. read more
