While I applaud Maine for their strong support of local ice cream stands, I thought most of the ice cream was just ok. I preferred the creaminess and richness of Mainely Custard over most of the ice cream stands I had also tried. They do sometimes run out of flavors the later you go, while I was in line 2 flavors went out of stock and their labels got pulled off of the wall, it made me sad. lol

We love Mainely Custard! Such a great local spot for a sweet treat when they're open during the season! (Apr-Oct) Friendly staff with plenty of outdoor seating and SO many different flavors to choose from their rotating menu! A favorite specials flavor for us was the Biscoff Cookie! It was delicious!

Was SO excited to see this on the road. The custard was exactly as described - tasty, smooth and extra creamy. We opted for the chocolate M&M and loved it. Super sweet area to eat and play. Highly recommend!!

When we drove by Mainely Custard on our way into Freeport and we just knew we'd be making a stop here at some point. I'm glad we did. It's a pretty typical ice cream stand complete with plenty of parking, plenty of shaded seating and even a talking moose that has a hankering for some delicious custard. Chat him up for some unexpected fun! Staff were friendly, helpful and engaging. The custard itself was really good and definitely worthy of a stop. One of the highlights IMHO is their many vegan options; nearly as numerable as their dairy options. I'm pretty far from a vegan but I do appreciate when places make efforts to be inclusive. I had the maple flavor in a classic sundae. The consistency and texture were perfection but it was lacking a tiny bit in the flavor department. The toppings in the sundae were quality and they allow substitutions and additions if that's your thing. I thought the prices were reasonable given the modern market, especially given that it's a small family owned business and things are small batch made in-house. Like most retail nowadays a small upsize nets you quite a bit more product for only a small price increase. Get the large, you're worth it and can go walk it off at the outlets :)

We passed this stand and had never seen a custard place! We turned around to try it. It was great! We absolutely loved it. Great service and cute atmosphere

Good stop for a cool sweet treat! Had a split single scoop of vegan butterscotch and non-vegan coffee. Vegan scoop didn't taste vegan at all, and the coffee was really good! Service was so fast and kind! Seating outside was in the shade. There's an animatronic moose which was a little odd... but in a quirky way!

Stopped on by this popular family owned custard spot after the Maine Oyster fest. They have plenty of outdoor seating including stools and picnic benches, as well as a talking moose head asking for a bite of custard. The price is fair with one scoop starting at $6 and a large sundae (3-4 scoops) for $10.50. Custard was fairly smooth, but not as creamy as I would've liked. I got their Katahdin sundae so I could try a variety of flavors, and the cashier was very friendly and happy to switch out walnuts instead of health bar crunch, and removed the caramel sauce. I tried the peppermint stick, caramel chocolate brownie, coffee Oreo and blueberry. Custard tends to run a bit on the sweeter side, but was definitely a nice treat and always down to support a local business. They accept credit cards, and also have an atm onsite as well. Would stop by again!

This is a great stop for some refreshing ice cream. I am not a fan of ice cream but the family is and the prices are manageable. I ordered the Maine blueberry custard in a scoop. The flavors were on point and it was smooth. The cashier was helpful and guided us through the menu. The place appeared clean and welcoming with a talking moose trying to get a taste of the goods!

Looking for vegan ice cream? Good vegan ice cream? Dare I say... REALLY GOOD vegan ice cream? You HAVE to visit Mainely Custard in Freeport!!! The prices are reasonable. The portions are SO GENEROUS. The staff are patient and reassuring. They have LOADS of vegan topping options too like whipped cream, hot fudge, caramel sauce, chocolate chips, cookie dough, peanut butter cookie dough, peanut butter cups, and sprinkles. If you've missed sundaes... you can build an entirely vegan one here! They feature three to four unique vegan ice cream options which change each week - you can expect flavors like coconut, maple, chocolate amaretto, orange, dulce de leche, pistachio, key lime, cake batter, mocha, cookie dough and more. Be sure to check their website and social media to see that week's flavors! If you're not into a scoop of ice cream, you'll also find chocolate, vanilla, and twist soft serve options available every day and ready to be swirled into a cone or cup of your choosing. Want a milkshake? They've got oat milk for no upcharge! Gluten-free? They've got cones and bowls for you! Don't have cash? They take card! It's such a delight to be able to participate in ice cream stand culture again; it's a summertime and Maine tradition, and after shifting to an entirely plant-based diet there's (still; currently) almost no place I can go. So, THANK YOU, Mainely Custard. I'm excited to visit again (and again and again).

Mainely Custard is a vegan friendly frozen custard take-out window with more vegan options than many local custard and ice cream places: several flavors of vegan custard, vegan sundae sauces, and vegan whipped cream. That's the *very* good news. They are also open 7 days/week in the summer. Service was prompt and polite. The not so great news was that I could not detect any pistachio flavor at all in my (full dairy) frozen custard. The custard was creamy and the hot fudge in the sundae was decent, however, the lack of pistachio flavor was disappointing. There is a picnic area with plenty of picnic tables and they've done a nice job stringing lights above. They're open until 9, I'm sure it's charming in the early evening. The downside of the location is that it's adjacent to I-295 and there was a lot of noise from passing traffic on our weekend afternoon visit in August. The traffic noise was louder than the 50's music (Elvis, Chuck Berry) playing over the sound system. The person I was with ordered a vegan banana boat and loved it. Vegan blueberry and eggnog custard with strawberry, pineapple, and hot fudge sauces. This was the highlight of our visit. If you are looking for a vegan sundae place, Mainely Custard might be worth a try.

Maine Blueberry on top with Apple Pie in the cone.

Great ice cream choices. I had Apple Pie and Maine Blueberry ice cream scoops in a waffle cone (good size waffle cone as well-some places have cones that can't support the ultimate goal). Very pleasant roadside store as I went on a cool late summer night (September 5th) and the line was impressive for a cooler night out. The two gents working the counter were as pleasant as the store itself. Price was fine for the quality of the product and experience. Thank you.

    Vanilla soft serve custard

Driving up US-1 to eat lobster rolls and other seafood in Maine's small towns, we stumbled upon Mainely Custard and decided to make a dessert stop. My husband and I shared a vanilla soft serve, and it was rich and delicious. It was some of the best soft-serve we've had, as you could tell it was made with real ingredients, nothing fake or artificial, or heavy sweeteners. We didn't order any toppings, but if you're into topping, sundaes, or milkshakes, they serve those too. The stand doesn't have a ton of flavors, but you'll find packaged pints in the cooler, and I noticed a few hard scoop flavors that I didn't see on the menu. Vegans and dairy-intolerant folks can also find tons of options. Mainely Custard accepts both cash or card now and has a large outdoor seating area with picnic tables. It's definitely worth a stop between lobster rolls!

This is definitely NOT custard, just good old ice cream. Go to "Ted Drews" in St. Louis where custard originated. It is heavenly.

While I have Ben & Jerry's in my freezer all the time, I find this location has very limited hours most of the year, and is incredibly expensive. You're better off going down the road to Shaw's to buy a pint for much cheaper. Still, it looks great in the mall and you never can walk away from the incredible smell as you walk by. They have plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors, which is nice. Parking isn't a problem, although downtown Freeport gets busy during the summer. The ice cream itself is as good as any Ben & Jerry's. I've never had issues with wrong orders. It just comes down to the Freeport premium pricing, which I can't blame them for, especially since they're probably trying to take advantage of the seasonal crowd. If you're considering coming outside of summer, check their hours because they close early.

Quality chowder but not comparable to a true Maine chowder Chowder is sometimes prepared with bacon or a salt pork base. The chowder served had actual bacon, not stated on the menu description. Very disappointed as it added to much sodium.I will be sure to pack my pocketbook and give it another chance.
