The 4th of July Fireworks Sail included my favorite things: -Unlimited alcohol -Unobstructed view of spectacular fireworks over the Waikiki skyline -A sick ass playlist (John Mellencamp, anyone?) -Watching a fellow female passenger reach inside her man's shorts to grope his ass and likely his scrotum too It was well worth the $75 per person cost. There's a reason why this place has gotten so many 5 stars. For 1.5 hour you get the following: -Cheapest rates for sailing (we did the tradewind sail for $18 when you mention yelp) -Nicest guys on board. They play good music, make small talk with you (if you'd like) and don't make cheesy touristy jokes or anything. It's nothing but a laid back sail -Cheap drinks (cash only though; min. $15 if you use a card) There's basically two options for sailing: daytime & sunset sailing (which I think might cost a little more). The boat has a bathroom on deck too for you fellow Yelpers who have a small bladder. The boat is pretty good size so you don't feel crowded. Overall, this is the choice to go with. I know everyone gave this thing 5 stars, but I just couldn't. I went out on it just because it got such high ratings, and usually go out on the Na Hoku II, but it was out for repairs, so I thought I would try another boat. We went towards the end of August 2010. I'm a 25 yr old male. Pros: 1. Nice crew. We had 2 guys, real nice guys, very helpful. 2. Clean boat! Seems new, and safe! 3. Fun to get out on the water, see Waikiki from the water. 4. Good price at $18/person for 3pm cruise 5. Seemed like a lot of families, not a bunch of wild people getting drunk (maybe this happens on the sunset cruise?) Cons: 1. No restroom really to speak of, supposedly some 'portable' one, but nothing like the Na Hoku II , where you can drop down into an actual restroom with a toilet, men and women's. Don't drink too much on this cruise, or you'll be in bad shape. You would think they would want people to drink a lot, they would provide a restroom. 2. Mai Tai was 3 dollars. Mai tai on tap. It almost just tasted like orange juice with a very SLIGHT amount of alcohol. The Na Hoku II has FREE complimentary unlimited drinks! And they are bulk made, but the mai tai tasted better than this one. 3. No 'covered' area for when the water starts flying. When we got out in the rough ocean, the water starts flying over the bow of the boat and soaking everyone. There is really no where to hide to stay dry!! We got pretty wet! It gets rough far out there! Luckily the splashing doesn't last tooo long. But on the Na Hoku II there is a covered canopy area where you can stay dry if desired. It was a fine cruise, we went on the 3pm cruise, and paid 18/person. For the price, it wasn't bad but I feel the Na Hoku II is better, and unlimited drinks. We decided to do this moonlight sail at the last minute. Call before 5 pm though, otherwise no one answers the phone. Or you have to find the girl on the beach in front of the Sheraton (the meeting place) and see if there are any tickets available. Luckily, there were still tickets available, which was great, and she just remembered my name and told me to meet her before the sail with the money. Easy. There was only 2 staff on board the boat: the captain and the first mate guy (forgot his name) who were both really cool and chill and just added to the easy going relaxing vibe. This was not a booze cruise by any means. I mean, you could've drank a lot, but most of the people on board were were relaxing and enjoying the night. The evening was perfect. Full moon over waikiki and diamond head, not too warm, not too breezy, really calm waters, and fireworks from the waikiki beach. Absolutely perfect. I definitely recommend! read more

My second time on Maita'i Catamaran and it was awesome as always! I've always done the Firework cruise on Friday night and even though you can see a lot of sights. The city lights, fireworks and ENDLESS mai tai's are totally worth it! The crew is so friendly and make the experience super fun. I have been a repeat customer and usually have a great experience on the catamaran, but recently I bought a groupon for my friends as Christmas gift where I had a disastrous experience. I called 4 days ahead of our trip to make a reservation - at which time they recorded my name and groupon code. When I showed up for the cruise, I found out our reservation had been written down for 11am, instead of our requested time at 1pm (everyone in my group can vouch that I asked for the 1pm reservation). We waited to see if there were any more empty seats, but the boat was at full capacity. We were given no consolation for THEIR MISTAKE. The whole day had been sold out, and we were told to show up at the next sail time and we might get on the boat, but no guarantee. An apology was not offered. There was no refunds or special offers. It felt a whole lot like we were the ones being blamed for their own mistake. I was shocked to learn the next day that they still recorded my groupon code as redeemed! WTF?? Needless to say, I will not be back. It was a huge disappointment for everyone involved - and I still can't believe how horrible we were treated. read more

Barefoot boarding...be prepared for wet feet, sunshine, wind, splashes and a good time! We bought this sail on a Groupon and were so glad we did. Just meet up with the sailboat where loading begins on the beach between the Hale Kulani and the Sheraton Hotels on Waikiki Beach ( think closer to the Hilton Hawaiian Village side of Waikiki). After a quick safety talk we set out for a leisurely sail lasting 90 minutes. On our sail last Wednesday we saw sea turtles and tons of flying fish. I was thinking that it would be so much fun for those fish to fly into the boat...think "Life of Pi"!!! read more

I have now been on several sunset catamaran cruises on various islands and this has been my favorite experience. You can read the other reviews for the info. about location etc.....let me just tell you about the Mai Tai's....they are GOOD. Good enough that this lady became da-da-da-drunk after about 5. (They are little). Not drunk enough that I couldn't walk yet (that came later- but hey! It was New Years Eve people!)......but drunk enough that I was pretty giggly. The downside was that my group was the youngest set there. And may I just say- maybe a BOOZE CRUISE is not the best choice for you if you are a middle-aged stiff lip. There are other options. A booze cruise is just that- people drink. So don't shoot people a dirty look for having a chill time. Especially those of us you are military because HEY- we deserve a night off after working our butts off for you.....just sayin' Anyhow- DON'T dress up tourists. This is not a dinner cruise. You look ridiculous in that party dress...but really don't wear something that can't get a drink spill on it because even the sober people were sloshing around their cup when we hit wind. The staff is super chill, very nice people who kept the night relaxed. (This obviously was not cool for the few old people on the cruise who obviously thought these fools were pirates or some thing). My friend asked me if I wanted to go on a catamaran friend since she had a LivingSocial deal. I said why not since I am always up for an adventure. We did a daytime sail and it was 1.5 hours long. The catamaran is located on the beach just west oh the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel. The weather was perfect and the views of Waikiki and Diamond Head were beautiful. The crew was super friendly and the music was pretty good. We even got to see dolphins swimming alongside the catamaran. If you planning on checking it out my recommendation is to wear clothing that you don't mind getting wet and maybe a light jacket it was a little windy on our way back to the beach. If you plan on buying some drinks bring a little cash. If I had some friends visiting in town I would recommended this for a nice outing. read more

I didn't want a "booze cruise" because I no longer am a drinker. It was suggested that we go at 11 AM or 1 PM. We took 1PM and it worked out great. A few people were drinking, but nobody was out of control. The two-man crew did a great job of running the boat in a safe manner. So far, this is my favorite catamaran on Oahu. I have tried a few others but this one seems to be the best. Very clean, large and the drinks are not too watered down. The music is always good. They have several types of cruises and you can get discount coupons if you look at the "This Week" magazine. It is best to make reservations. You can usually get them the same day. During the trip, we did both the Tradewinds at 1PM and the Mahina Moonlight Sail! Both trips supplied us with gorgeous views and delicious drinks! The staff and crew were incredibly friendly and really heightened the experience. The view of the fireworks on the Mahina sail were absolutely superb and the afternoon views of the Tradewinds were some of the best of my trip! I went on the Maita'i for the New Year's Eve boat cruise. It was really expensive for an hour and a half... I wouldn't do it again. You did get really close to the fireworks and all but it would have been the same from shore. It didn't do it for me, although I'm not sure what I would suggest to make it better either... Had an amazing time of this! It is down a little beach access literally in between Halekulani and the Sheraton. You will come up to a small booth area and you will check in at the beach area where there will be a white beach chair. I suggest arriving at least 15 minutes before to check in. It is important to have cash for the drink. They beer, wine, champagne and of course Mai Tai's. The prices range from 3 to 5 dollars. The Trade Winds Sail is probably the best value option ($28 as of 7/1/14). We were able to get a groupon for 50% off 2 people, which made this above and beyond worth it! Sodas/bud/bud light are $3. Mai tais (yes, you can taste the alcohol), Heineken, wine & champagne are $5. Good deals. If you haven't been on a catamaran, be prepared for a windy & bumpy ride as the boat sails fast over the waves. So I wouldn't recommend it if you even get a little motion sickness. This is the reason why I probably wouldn't do the Sunset Mai Tai sail, which gives you unlimited drinks for $39, because 1) I would eventually spill my drink on the other passengers and 2) Three or more drinks = restroom use and I couldn't imagine using their restroom with how much the catamaran moves! The pick up location is convenient - right in front of the Sheraton Waikiki. The team that sails the catamaran is great as well. Very friendly! We also got to see flying fish, sea turtles. This is the perfect way to either start or end your trip to Waikiki! read more

We took a 90-minute cruise with Maita'i Catamaran yesterday. I recommend the Sunday morning 11:00 AM sailing. We only had 24 passengers onboard, so there was plenty of room for everyone. The price we paid was amazing. We got an insanely good two for one deal through LivingSocial, which made the cruise a great bargain ($23 for the two of us). Otherwise, the Tradewinds Cruise is usually $28/person. If you aren't staying in Waikiki, I recommend parking at the Royal Hawaiian garage. If you buy something and get your parking validated, the first hour is free and parking is $1.00/hour for up to three hours. We got snacks at the ABC store and saved money on parking fees, compared to what we'd have paid parking at the Sheraton Waikiki. The catamaran is on the beach, west of the Sheraton. You can't miss it since its name is on the hull and the green sails are distinctive, even when lowered. We checked in with a lady who had a list of reserved passengers. A photographer took a picture of us that was available for $10 after the cruise. March is prime season for whale spotting, and we were excited to see several whales. We would rather have spent time watching them, rather than cruising out until noon and returning to shore by 12:30 PM, but the Tradewinds Cruise isn't billed as a whale watching excursion. Our fellow passengers were a mixture of Americans and Japanese. Everyone was friendly and seemed to have a good time. We were the only kama'aina on board, but we didn't get peppered with questions about where we were visiting from by the crew (a pleasant change). Drinks were reasonable priced ($3.00 for a maita'i in a plastic cup/12 ounce cans of beer and $2.00 for bottled water). Be sure to wear a swimsuit, for you'll get splashed with spray (or drenched) from time to time. We were glad we brought our beach towels. I do wish I'd put my hair in a braid, for the wind whipped it into knots during the voyage. Sunglasses were a must, too, along with sunscreen, unless you like to sizzle like bacon. Overall, this was a fun excursion. It is really best for tourists. I hate the concrete jungle of Waikiki and would rate this cruise higher if it operated out of other parts of the island, from time to time. read more

This trip rocked! First of all, in HI they can not call a trip a booze cruise but on the 5pm cruise you get to drink all you can on the trip. It is roughly $35 to $40 bucks depending on how you buy the trip. We bought the trip over the phone. If we had used the hotel,Sheraton Waikiki it would have been $5 bucks cheaper. About 40 people on the boat, captain and the only female crew lifeguard, bartender and boat crew. Very friendly people. Great selection of music played and about a 1 1/2 hour trip on Waikiki beach. Sunset fantastic!!! The boat took off right from our beachfront of Sheraton Waikiki. I would do this again and again! A must when you are in HI. read more

This is about the service before the sail. My group ended up not wanted to go on our sunset trip. We received an email saying if you call ahead at least 24 hours ahead of time your cancelation if free. We called and no-one answered, we left a message with our name and phone number. The next day we called and they said that they had not received a voicemail. So we were not able to go but still had to pay the full amount. Very very poor customer serves. I came back here to do the booze cruise since I had a friend who was moving away, and I guess this is one of the last things she wanted to do in Hawaii before moving back to the mainland? Anyway, like the non-boozey version of the cruise (see my first review), it's 90 minutes long, plenty of seating, beautiful views, etc... And then there's the unlimited mai tais for $35 a person. It sounds great at first until you realize that you need to drink at least 5 mai tais to get your money's worth. And if you have a small bladder like me, it's not gonna happen. Yes, there is a small bathroom on board, but they tell you it's for emergencies only. Needless to say, by the time we were back on shore, I was running to the Sheraton bathrooms. read more

LOVE LOVE LOVED this booze cruise. Had a great time. I really, really enjoyed the sunset cruise. They dock outside of the Sheraton. So here I am at the infinity pool and watching people board this catamaran. I'm like, i'm getting on this b!tch. I think it was $35. All you can drink maitai's (was not that strong, i thought at first) and the breathtaking view. WOW, what a deal. So we sailed until the sun set. They took us south to Diamond Head and headed north. The captain and bartender were excellent. Always kept my cup full. I think i lost count after 3, 4, 5, 6..... those maitais crept up on me cuz i didn't feel tipsy until after I got off the boat. Money well spent for some of the best memories of waikiki. Also, you don't have to sit while on the catamaran. I was the last to board and thought it was going to suck not having a seat, but to tell you the truth, I stood the whole time next to the nets even when seats opened up. i just wish that they would let us lay or sit on the nets. We were the only parents on board and had a six year old with us, and despite the drunken-display before us, we all had a splendid time---so that must mean it was indeed awesome. ~Price was just right for the 1.5 hour ride. ~We each had a couple of sodas and some mai thais (they were unlimited, but do you really want to load up on liquids when the restroom onboard looks more like a vertical cave and doesn't shut completely?) ~Great music, awesome captain and co-captain/bartender ~Obligatory picture was sold to us, but $15 was not bad..it was a very nice picture. TIP: When getting onto the boat, watch the dang waves. If you see one coming towards you and you're wearing a nice little WHITE dress, maybe you should wait until the wave goes away. I bought a Groupon so my boyfriend and I could use it. We went about a couple of days ago. Perfect timing, perfect "sailing day" weather - loved it! We ended up being the only locals there (besides the guys running the ship). Overall, it was an AMAZING experience since the last time I've been in any boat/ship/thing that floats on water was probably the small boat ride Pearl Harbor's USS Arizona Memorial. It was a 5/5 experience, originally, but I'll tell you why as time goes along. A few tips to any of you guys who plan to go on this boat ride: 1) They play Hawaiian music during the ride, which gives it that cruise kind of feeling. Sailing through the ocean waves as you hear the sounds of J Boog, SOJA, and so forth. I found myself jamming to every song on their playlist. 2) There are usually 2-3 people directing the ride. We had a Haole guy who was really chill and a local boy who was shirtless. All the tourists were practically throwing themselves at him (Not sure because they found him attractive, or if they were drunk). 3) Drinks are available but a tad bit pricey for anyone who's low on cash. $3 for a soda? I'll pass. The open bar drinks were about $5, and you can probably imagine how many people were trying to flash those dollar bills JUST to get a maitai. 4) Speaking of the open bar...It's advantageous for those people who think that servers that don't ID are really cool. Actually, when you're on a boat and far from the shore, you might wanna think twice about being drunk and messed up. We were with a group of middle-aged women who couldn't control their alcohol and half the boat was drunk along with them. One guy almost fell over and a lady took over the steering wheel while we were sailing. She obnoxiously told her friend, "Take a picture of me sailing!" and went on for 2-3 minutes thinking that she was actually steering the godforsaken thing. Now it's down to 4/5 stars. 5) They have a gratuity jar. As the driver of the boat stated, "Like how bartenders make their cash off tips, we do have a tip jar for those of you who enjoyed the ride. Feel free to put in any kinds of tips!" The tip jar is in the front of the boat (when you get on, there's a tube with a shaka, hang-loose kind of stickers on it). Here comes the fun part: why my review is 3/5 stars. 6) Before you get on the boat, a guy is lined up on the Sheraton Beach and takes pictures of each family/couple that gets on the boat. While you're on the boat ride, he prints out pictures to sell to you at $15. Now, no one in our group wanted to buy ONE picture for $15. I mean, it's one picture. I'd buy it if it was in wallet size. So everyone starts snapping their own photos and saving it to their smartphones. We did that too until the guy told us: "You're F---ng rude!" and snatched the photo from our hands. I couldn't believe that he was blaming US for taking a copy of their picture when everyone else was doing the same. I can understand that he was mad because it's his intellectual property. But camera guy, if you were really pissed off, don't take it out on us. Well sir, thanks to you, I now deem the Maitai Catamaran 3/5 stars. Perhaps the best part was going off-island for a bit. It was so nice to kick back and relax together for once. Aside from angry photographers, drunk women, and the pricey beverages, it's actually a pretty great boat ride. While the premise of a gorgeous sunset cruise sounds appealing, don't be fooled by this company. They are completely incompetent from the front office management to the boat crew. A word of caution: they use a third party to book many of the cruises called Hawaii Discount. Hawaii Discount has the rights to the domain maitaicatamaran.com while Maitai Catamaran has the rights to maitaicatamaran.net. Both websites look very similar. So you think you are booking via the real deal but instead are booking through the third party, leading to communication issues and ultimately a missed cruise due the main company booking the wrong date. I had many friends on island who did not get to sail whatsoever. Talk about a waste. Simply put, do not trust this company with your precious vacation time or hard-earned money. There are other ways to see an amazing sunset on island without the hassle and embarrassment of dealing with Maitai Catamaran. read more

BEST EXPERIENCE EVER. I had the most amazing time on this ship. Before this, I thought cruising was the most boring and stupid event ever. Now I want to go again. I was planning on staying in the shade on the inside, but I went outside just to see the view. I couldn't seem to get back inside. I prefer going on the front of the boat because when the ship bumps on the waves it feels like you're riding a roller coaster (hyperbole right there). There's a net in the middle of the deck so I went on there and I couldn't get off. It was literally so fun. I laid down and I just fell asleep. There's also a protrusion on each side on the front deck so you can take a photo and watch the view. There are also beanbags on the edge of the nets so you can sit or lay on them. read more

Of all the things that my daughter and I did while we were on the island of Oahu this was definitely one of our favorites. We weren't really sure what to expect but after our experience it's a "must do". They have 4 cruises that go out every day but I feel that the "sunset cocktail cruise" is by far the best option. Advance reservations are required so either call ahead or book something on line. If you've done the cruise before (or even if you haven't) just mention that you're not a rookie and you'll get a $5 discount off a ticket. (There is also a special offer on Yelp if you check-in). The cruise sets sail right from the beachfront at the Waikiki Sheraton. Our group checked in at 4:30pm and the cruise took off around 5pm. You can climb aboard for $39 (drinks included) and it's about a 90 minute cruise. Depending upon what time of year you travel you might even be lucky enough to spot some whales. The two man crew on board was very entertaining. They offered us drinks along the way and although they don't serve any food you can bring whatever snacks you want along with you. Certainly an evening to remember. read more

I first went on the Maitai like five years ago, and it was a blast. I recently went again for my birthday. My friends and I were going to do the Waikiki Rigger, but there was a private cruise the Saturday of our staycation. (As an aside, the Waikiki Rigger lets you buy these shakers that they fill with the yummiest drink concoction. They come around and bring you drinks. All you have to do is put the shaker on top of your head to get it refilled.) Soo I looked for an alternative and figured I would give the Maitai a try again. Well, I am glad we did. It was a nice sunset cruise. The boat design seemed to make it less crowded than the Rigger. On the rigger, we all had to stay on a net instead of a bench. The mai tais were kind of sweet, but they have beer also. The one nice thing about the Rigger was having the crew deliver your drinks to your seats. They didn't do this on this ride, but it was also easier to walk around this boat than the Rigger. I enjoyed it, and I would go again. The kama'aina rate is $34 for the sunset cruise. read more

My husband and I live in Honolulu and we decided to purchase a Groupon for this cruise. We had a blast!! The captain, Ian, was super friendly and the female bartender, Alex, was a bad ass. She made wonderful drinks, fulfilled everyone's drink orders very quickly and she did a lot of laborious work lifting the sail and pulling up the motor.
