I've only gotten takeout from here but it's always been a wonderful experience! They're fast and the food is always good - plus their prices won't break the bank! They have a few tables inside if you'd like to order at the kiosk and then eat inside. Growing up, I had a lot of Muslim friends and over the last 20 years. I've tried pretty much every entry in the Middle Eastern category in the area. Maiwand has top tier meat, really well seasoned and marinated. Much better than some of the other places around here. But it really sticks out with my mom is the green sauce. That green sauce is so good you could put it on a flip-flop. There are times when DoorDash offers significant discounts to Maiwands competitors and I still choose them just because no one else has perfected the green sauce like they have. The restaurant was pretty clean, had a good amount if space, and the staff were nice. The prices were very reasonable and you get a generous portion. I ordered the lamb kabob which came with naan, salad, and fragrant "brown" rice- flavored with what I assume is clove, cinnamon and raisins. The gourmand flavors really compliment the savoriness of the meat which was nicely seasoned and tender. Also the side of pumpkin was delicious and interesting because it has a garlic sauce that balances out the sweetness in the dish. Overall, I will definitely revisit. read more

The sampler platters come with only 2 pieces of tough lamb 2, pieces of dry chicken, a thimble full of spinach, and 2 tiny pieces of beef over a sliver of onions and 2 scoops of rice. The veggie platter had only a small handful of chick peas falafel and unseasoned plain white rice. I tried the salmon kabob, which was excellent- The bread was not as fresh or soft as I remember it from the past. The salmon, rice, and chickpeas were great. They were missing my salad and spinach sides though and had instead given me the wrong sides (rice and bread) so I called in to get it rectified. Before the food, I must compliment the two WONDERFUL people who took care of my wife and me. Sorry, I did not catch their names. One young woman was behind the register and the other our waitress. My wife and I saw this place by accident while driving to the nearby Ross store. Since I am Gluten sensitive, I know that most kabob foods are safe for me ... but I always ask. The two young women both truly understood "gluten free" and guided me accordingly. Since we wanted a quick lunch and not heavy meals, my wife and I split a Chicken Kabob plate. With 6 large chunks of perfectly prepared chicken, a small salad and a giant helping of very special rice (see below), there was plenty of food for both of us. The chicken was perfectly seasoned and cooked. If you are not familiar, it is NOT "HOT" spicy. just delicious. We have a wonderful Moby Dick's in Olney (about 2.5 miles from my home). We enjoy their food all the time. It is claimed to be "Persian." Maiwand claims to be Afghan. To me, the food is very similar in name. BUT, while both are delicious, there are differences. Maiwand's rice appears semi-fried and mixed with a generous helping of raisins and maybe shredded tomato (to be honest, I'm not positive - but whatever it is it blended into the overall flavor of the rice beautifully). Chatting with the two young women, we were happy to learn that there is also a Maiwand Kabob restaurant closer to us in Clarksville MD. We WILL be searching for it soon! They do a Sabzi dish that I want to try, as well as a curry and Jalfarazi daily specials that sound awesome. Overall, a wonderful lunch served with care by two wonderful people. At $16 for one, it is a bit expensive, but for two = very reasonable. I must note that eating out has become outrageously expensive everywhere! Finally, this chain advertises that their food is "Halal," the Muslim equivalent of "Kosher." This is important to many people! read more

Maiwand Kabob is a MD classic. They have multiple locations (I believe this is the original), and while they can vary a bit in quality it's only from really great to amazing. I thought I had posted this review a few months ago. First visit to Maiwand Kabob every though a buddy of mine eats there a few times a week and always raves about it. I have seen a few locations about town but it always seemed located in the vicinity of some other restaurant I planned to visit (e.g. Rangoli) so I never bothered. This location is in the same shopping plaza as the Safeway and is diagonally across from Safeway so plenty of parking. I placed a to-go order for the Chicken Shawarma and Naan. it came served with a side of fries. Pretty great portions and nice, friendly staff. I sat in the restaurant while I waited for the food and a family came in for lunch. They were greeted warmly and since the restaurant doesn't have a large seating area, it suddenly felt like I as in someone's kitchen. People were laughing and seemed to be teasing the guy behind the counter. Couldn't quite make out what was being said but the scene was pretty cute. When I have chicken shawarma abroad, there is much more of a citrus flavor and I love that. This didn't have that flavor but was still well seasoned and yummy. I've been on a bit of a kabob kick lately, and was searching for something for lunch in this immediate area of Columbia / Ellicot City (I think its technically Columbia here). I stopped in this plaza to grab something quick at the grocery store, when I spotted Maiwand. Its tucked in on the far side of the plaza, near some former banks and other outer-lots, and its pretty easy to miss, but I'm glad I found it. The restaurant has a good sized menu posted on the left when you come in, as well as some items behind the counter -- I didn't see the full menu until after I'd ordered, oops! Be sure to check it out, they've got some good specials. I ordered lamb kabobs, which came with naan, rice, and a salad. The kabob was simply roasted lamb with onions, and I admit, I could have done for a little more kabob. It was really good, which may have had something to do with why I wanted more! The meat was cooked to perfection, and the onions were well done without being burnt (beyond the normal little bit of char you'll get from the grill). I really enjoyed the bread, too. Overall, a very good experience, and I'll definitely be trying them again. read more

The one drawback is that naan doesn't normally come with a meal, like some other places. You have to order it if you want it. The appetizers are always filling. You can order a bunch of appetizers and sides and be full. This particular location is small with limited seating. Staff were decent, felt like they were not as friendly (didnt get the normal greeting or goodbyes) but they were not rude. I got the chicken seekh (which is a spiced minced chicken kebab) and samosas which are dishes I have had before elsewhere. The front guy told me the Samosas were going to come out first then the main dish bc it takes at least 15 mins to prepare - then 20ish min later they both came out at the same time. Bummer. The samosas were good, they were very crunchy (which is different than the breaded ones I've had before). The Chicken Seekh and rice were alittle bland, not as flavorful like the other places I've tried. I came here with my mom the other day and ordered the kofta and chicken kabob. To start the restaurant looks beautiful, I wish I snapped some pictures. The meat in both kabobs was good but not great (a little tough, 3/5). I LOVED the rice though. It was sweet and contained cinnamon, carrots, and raisons (5/5). I used to get takeout from here very often but suddenly stopped because it was far from my work. A few days ago, I was craving chicken jalfarazi which is one of their weekly specials and I went out of my way to get it and I'm sad to say but I was disappointed. The portions are a lot smaller than they were before, even for the sides. The naan that they give was so hard and tough that I couldn't tear it. The chicken still tasted just as delicious as I remember it. I'm going to go there again to try the other items on the menu to see if they've changed or remained the same. The employees are still friendly and the service is fast. I'm definitely gonna go back to try the other dishes but I'm still a little bit disappointed about the naan and portion sizes. read more

Every time I come up to Columbia, I try to eat here. I absolutely love their Vegetable Platter - it comes with their Chickpea Curry, Spinach, Green Pea & Potato Curry, Babaganoush and Pumpkin; I believe it comes with rice and naan as well. It's a great variety of flavors and textures, all cooked and seasoned well. I can't speak to any of their other dishes as I have yet to try anything else - highly recommend! read more
