Oh boy was this place freakin' great! Ambience: This place was small but mighty. Super-clean all the way down to the toilet. Very nicely decorated with a great outdoor patio. Wait Staff: I wish I took the name of our waitress because she was awesome, funny and knowledgeable about the menu. All waiters/waitresses were great. Drinks: Unfortunately I didn't get any drinks because we kept seeing the brightly colored drinks and flights being served around us and I was jealous, they all looked awesome. Food: This is where it gets good because the food was A+++mazing. We started off with just the salsa, chips and for a nice surprise, some warm beans. The salsa brought a tear to my eye because it was soooo good. Luckily, my son doesn't eat salsa so I drank it all down. The chips were perfectly fresh and crispy. Guac: So, our waitress brought us some off the menu guac, and, WTF, why are they hiding this recipe from the rest of the world. I literally got into a fist fight with my son because he was trying to take it from me (not really) but I didn't want to share. The presentation was so cute too. Plantains + chips + guac = heavan Fajitas: I ordered fajitas and all boxes were checked, quantity, quality, and taste. I ordered the chicken and it was juicy and thick and perfectly seasoned. Steak tacos: My kid ordered the steak tacos and we brokered a deal to trade some steak for chicken and this was the best deal made since the New Deal (American history). Steak was chunky and juicy and fresh! The only problem with this place is that it is very far from my house as I was in the 'hood for my kids basketball tournament. I've been coming into this place for about eight years and has been different managers managing this place. The food has been OK on enough but the last time I got there we was eating on the patio and we saw infestation of rats everywhere so close they really almost get in our seats. . The manager apologize but . I guess it's more than that. Need to be taken care of as soon as possible before the health department find out enclose down the place so I would recommend it if you go eat there don't eat outside. when it's just dark the rats get into the back patio. For the person in charge is like a normal you don't really seems like he cares for tha problem.. I spent almost $200 and do you have that experience it now a good sign of a good business. read more

I remember coming here once before and loving it, so I always planned to come back. I used to live too far away, but now that I'm closer, I decided to give it another try. Unfortunately, what a disappointment. For $28, I got only five shrimp with almost no flavor, plus a tiny side of rice and beans. The portion honestly looked like something off the kids' menu. Not only was it bland, but it also wasn't satisfying at all. The one positive was the service--it was friendly and attentive. Sadly, the food just didn't live up to my previous experience. For the price, it's simply not worth it. Save your money and eat somewhere else. read more

I met mu family members here for lunch because it was half way between us, and completely saddened that Miguel's had moved off of the 15. It was ONLY our party of 3 and another table of a gentleman with a young kid. When I arrived, the guys were already enjoying some chips & salsa, and beans. One of them had a soda, the other had ordered one of the specialty margaritas. I sat down, several minutes later, I ordered a margarita while I looked over the menu. The waiter seemed to be rushed to take our food order.... So, we ordered without me asking my "normal questions" that I would normally do when dining at a new "Mexican" restaurant. I am Latina, and I am allergic to raw onions and I don't like cilantro forward dishes (cumin is fine). One of my favorite dishes growing up is chile verde, so I went with it. It was literally chunks of pork and cilantro sauce, with a bit of heat. It was disgusting..... but, our waiter never came back to check on us to ask how our meals were, didn't offer to refill the chips & salsa (which was pretty much gone before I even arrived), didn't refill our water, soda.... Nada. He finally showed up to drop the check off, after we motioned him at the bar. My plate was pretty much untouched, other than a few bites of the rice and I ate a tortilla because I was starving because he didn't come back to check on our table. After seeing my plate, pretty much untouched, do you think he asked if there was something else he could serve me? - NOPE. Did he offer to remove it from the bill? - NOPE. Do you think he apologized for ignoring us the entire time we were there? - HELL NO!! I paid nearly $100 for a margarita, a couple chips and a tortilla. At least the guys found their food decent enough to eat. We will never return, because the service doesn't match the prices charged. Some people shouldn't work in a service industry, if they don't care to provide decent service. I was beyond disappointed - how would you feel if you just paid $100 for lunch for 3 people, only 2 cocktails.... And still had to stop somewhere else afterwards to eat some edible food? read more

Went to Maiz Cocina for lunch and it was amazing. We ordered so much food, we wanted a taste of everything. We tried the queso, jalapeño cream soup, and the pork belly bites for appetizers. We had the chile relleno and enchiladas de mole for our main dishes. I ordered a watermelon basil for a drink. Clearly we ordered so much that we took leftovers home but every dish hit the spot. My boyfriend and I came out here for dinner one night. He lives in the area and couldn't believe we've never been here before. Food and service is outstanding. The chips and salsa and bean dip were served as soon as we were seated and was even refilled for us without even asking. We ordered the margarita flight, a really unique offering. My favorite was the tamarind one. Definitely more boozy than I was expecting which was a nice surprise. We started with the deconstructed pork belly tacos which were nice and crispy and had great flavor. My boyfriend enjoyed the lobster enchiladas. I don't know many restaurants that offer lobster enchiladas so this was a must try! That did not disappoint. We also ordered their carnitas plate. It was good as well but still think the two other dishes we ordered were my favorite. When we saw butter cake on the dessert menu, we wouldn't help ourselves. It was amazing! Safe to say we definitely ordered too much food for the two of us but enjoyed taking a doggy bag home for meals the next couple days. read more

WOOOW blown away by this place!! We came pretty late, 30 mins to closing, so we made sure we were out by 10. Presentation is gorgeous, but we hardly even got through half our plates because they were so filling. Dishes are super unique and priced very reasonably. We also ordered a margarita and butter cake, both also delicious. Service was great. Everyone was so attentive, quick, and friendly! Really appreciated that. We sat outside but both the inside and outside seem very comfortable. There seems to really be something for everyone. read more

This is a local Mexican restaurant that is convenient and gets great recommendations so we decided to try it. On our first visit, we sat at the bar. The bartender took our drink order, and we received chips and salsa, which were very good. However, the bartender seemed a bit distracted, forgot about us, even though it wasn't a busy night. We decided to give it another chance since so many people seem to enjoy this place. We visited again, and we ordered a few drinks, received chips and salsa, then placed our food order. We waited for a bit and ordered a few more drinks. Unfortunately, after waiting about an hour, we never received our meal or any update on its status. We eventually decided to close out our bill. At that point, we noticed we had been charged for the meal we never received, as well as drinks that were not served. When we brought this to the bartender's attention, they raised their voice and told us we were wrong, which caught us by surprise. I understand that things can get busy, but a lack of communication and being spoken to disrespectfully is unacceptable. A simple check-in or update would have made a big difference. Based on this experience, we're unlikely to return. We really wanted this to work, but maybe you had to be regular customer to get better service?! We tried, but this place is a solid No for us. read more

My friend had an enchilada and a chili Riano and she loved those the problem with this place is the service not very friendly at all and we waited for a super long time to get our check. I ordered the octopus and a steak burrito via Grubhub around 2pm on Cinco de Mayo. It took a bit longer than predicted but it was worth the wait. The octopus was tender and delicious with a heat that built up slowly. The bed of greens was a little over dressed but delicious. The burrito was very good. It sat for a bit while I ate the octopus so it got a little soggy. It had a lot of steak much to my surprise. The presentation of both dishes was exceptional. In my experience, Corona doesn't have many restaurants that produce high quality food and deliver. I'm glad to have discovered Maiz Cocina. I'll be back. read more

Great little spot for brunch! It's in a strip mall off the 91 at Green River, and it delivers. We had Sunday brunch and all tastes good. Chilaquiles was massive (come hungry). Out party also had avocado toast and the breakfast burrito. All items ordered were as expected, delicious. The sever was attentive, and the music was upbeat. They have a small footprint in the immediate restaurant, but an enclosed patio that adds seats to the mix. They do have a small outdoor area in front, but it probably only gets use when busy. I would think dogs can join the outdoor fun. So glad we came by, and we will return. read more

One of the best Mexican spots that I've been to! They serve up complimentary freshest tortilla chips I've ever had. Came warm and freshly made with salsa and refried beans. These are some of the other items I got to try out. Ceviche - Interesting and a bit different. Not too sour and was a first to see cucumbers not diced up. It was good but I wasn't crazy about it either. (4/5) Rack of Lamb - A MUST GET. This was BOMB. I know its $34 but they cook it with some mole sauce and it was tender and flavorful. Also came with some potato patty mixture that was delicious as well. (5/5) Fajitas De La Casa (Steak) - The pan it came with wasn't "sizzling" but it was warm. The meat was tender and cooked medium/well done. Came with corn tortillas which was fresh and tasty. I enjoyed this dish and would get it again. (4.5/5) The service was quite fast and very friendly, we enjoyed our stay here. It's a beautiful restaurant with the freshest food and great service. They even came out and sang to my friend for her birthday as well as gave us a free birthday cake slice. Would totally recommend this spot. I always judge a mexican restaurant by their salsa and chips. The Salsa tastes fresh and homemade, the chips are also crispy and usually eaten quickly. I got the flight of margaritas, they come in 4 flavors. I actually had 2 flights before I ordered food. The guacamole is really fresh and real actual avocados. Most places will give you some paste that looks like guac but is actually water and powder. The Chipotle adobo sauce that comes with the guac is simple but electrifying. The Tacos de ongo are a must. The NY steak paired with the mushrooms are really hearty and i was only able to finish one taco, glad to take the rest home for an encore. I look forward to coming back, the service was excellent, the owner even made his was to check up on us. I felt like I knew the people here. Went here for lunch because my sister had been wanting to try it for a while…read more Parking is a little weird because it's shared with a 7/11 convenience store and some spots are specifically reserved for 7/11. Still, I was able to find a spot quickly. Walking in, there's a sign that says "Wait to be seated", but when the waitress came out, she said we could sit wherever we wanted. We chose a booth by the window. I don't know how old this restaurant is, but I could tell that the booth we chose was really popular because the leather seats were so worn down that they had to patch some of the holes up. As soon as we were seated, we were immediately given menus, water, chips, and salsa. The salsa was really spicy, though, so as much as we love chips and salsa and would normally have finished it all off before our actual meal came, we could only eat half of it. Across from us was a big family of Latinos which for me was a good sign. After all, if they're Latino themselves, they could easily just make the same food at home, but if the food here was good enough for them to come here instead, then the food had to be decent. Since I'm vegetarian, I had to ask for them to not put meat in my enchilada, so the waitress just made it a cheese one. If you're vegetarian like me, there's not really much on the menu for us, but at least they're accommodating enough to leave the meat out if you ask. If you're vegan, you're really out of luck since it seems everything will have at least melted cheese on top. All of the food came out quickly and at the same time, which is appreciated since not all restaurants do that. In addition, the portions were big enough for us to eat most of it there, then be full enough to want to take the rest of it home, which makes up for the cost since it is a little expensive. Again, I don't know how old the restaurant is, but you could tell it's been aged through the years, like the paint is peeling off or splattered with what looked like salsa. Definitely a hole in the wall kind of place. On the other hand, if it's been around long enough to go through that kind of wear and tear, it's a testament to the loyalty of its customers. Plus, they do try to make it look nice with balloons, flowers, and flags. And they try to clean up the tables as soon as people are done eating. I just finished eating my leftovers and it tasted as good as it did when I ate it at the restaurant. So the food is good, the sizes, especially for the cost, are decent. Just know that the place is a little worn down, but the employees try their best to smile, be friendly, and quick to attend to your needs.

Everything was cooked to perfection and the rice was a nice touch. Again, both similar to aloha stacks. We got the mango smoothie and the iced Hawaiian coffee. The mango smoothie tasted very fresh and not too sugary. The coffee was pretty basic but had a nice touch of cream on top There is indooor and outdoor seating and you order at the counter (nice and helpful people) and they bring it to your table. It gets busy so go early!!

I've since removed the other restaurant from my list of places to go. Congrats to them for being so popular, but when people are forced to wait for an hour by default, it's an automatic turn off and they're losing customers. Anyway, while waiting in line at Scramblers we had time to look at the menu which is a big sign hanging over the counter. When we first walked in, though, the sign was still far away, so I also brought the menu up on my phone. I was glad there was a vegetarian Garden Crepe option and the cashier was accommodating when I asked for even more ingredients to be removed. It was packed inside, so when we were asked we told her we'd prefer to sit outside. Outside, there are small wooden signs with numbers on them and you go to the one you're assigned to. We were sat next to a tree which was appreciated because we got some shade. There's also a table with condiments if you want to grab a bottle of ketchup or anything else you might want. At the time I remembered thinking what a nice day it was to be sitting outside, but later learned the air quality was actually bad that day since there was a fire we didn't know about. Also, summers in general have bad air quality because the heat traps the pollution. Then again, even if we chose to sit inside, the door was open for people to line up, so we couldn't have escaped the bad air either way. Also, Scramblers is on the corner of a busy intersection and I saw one car cutoff another car at the turn and the other driver honk and yell at the other driver, so not exactly the most peaceful place to sit down and eat. Anyway, the food tasted good and I ate everything in one sitting. After being to this plaza a few times now, I've learned that it's best to take whatever parking spot you can get even if it's far from the place you're going to. Scramblers is especially difficult to get to, so it was a bit of a walk to and from our car. I've said it before in other reviews, but I curse whoever planned the layout of this plaza, like what were they thinking? Still, there are enough places for us to want to try out to keep coming back.

Over the years I've tried most of the things on the menu. On Tuesday they have a taco special that includes 3 tacos and on Thursday they have an amazing taquito special. There were some guys who appeared to be hardworking blue collar workers of some type who were quiet and just enjoying their lunch. There were also some women who looked like white collar office workers and they were super loud and rude. There were also some older people who came in for take out. Overall, it was a bit noisy. The shredded chicken taco was a pretty standard hard taco. The shell was crispy after a long drive home on top but of course soggy on the bottom. The chicken was good quality and decent flavor. The taquitos were just ok. The ones made elsewhere, especially at most places in San Diego, are much better. Some places in the San Gabriel valley also make these a different style but better. However, the guac & sour cream at El Torero to go with the taquitos are far superior to San Gabriel and comparable to San Diego. If you want tacos, burritos, and other such type food and don't want the Americanized stuff, this is a good place to try if in the area. Not in this area often, but if there, would go to El Torero again.

Also, I read a couple of reviews that complained that not all menu items were available. Our waiter explained that when they sometimes run out of things, it's because they are a small restaurant. To start our meal, we ordered the Bresaola which was outstanding. For our main course we ordered the Lobster Ravioli and the Chicken Marsala. The Lobster Ravioli was served with a cream sauce and a lot of flavor. The Chicken Marsala was without a doubt the best I've ever tasted and was served a vegetable medley. Service was attentive but also a little slow at times. Some of the slowness may have been caused by the kitchen being very busy. The restaurant is noisy and busy. If possible make a reservation or you may have to wait for a table.

We had to Google several items ourselves to figure out what they were before ordering, since the server was nowhere to be found a majority of the time; which made the experience less enjoyable. The food itself was good and authentic, but the service and overall dining experience left a lot to be desired. Likely will not return.
