Maki Plus is an OG spot here in Oxnard. I happily remember getting out of high school (CIHS) and walking to Maki after practice for a good and affordable meal. Now 15 years later I still go and now take my family. It's a super small restaurant but their food is packed with so much flavor! The owners are wonderful people and my kids always enjoy coming here. Only one thing that bothered me was the person who took care of us from start to finish was NOT friendly at all. We called in an order based on their online menu, but the order we received wasn't fully what was ordered. In addition, they charged different prices from what they advertised online (one of the rolls was double than what was advertised). We called them after the order got back to our office to discuss the few items that were wrong and the incorrect charging and they hung up on us. We spent almost $150 so I would think the courtesy of at least talking to us about the wrong items and incorrect charging wasn't too much to ask but they thought differently. I came here and purchased a spicy tuna roll & California roll. I was served a spicy tuna roll with SPOILED spicy tuna. The smell and taste of spoiled fish is something I do not wish you experience. That's unfortunately not all sadly. The service here is not great, the old lady working there treats you like you are inconveniencing her. The restaurant is not cleaned after promptly as the tables are covered with dirty dishes and utensils. It takes a long while for your order to be done. They are also stingy with utensils, sauces, and napkins. You have to ask for them, and when you do the lady there again looks highly irritated with you. The California roll only had a paper thin smear of avocado on it. I am so disappointed and I hope I don't get sick from this place. Surprisingly good Japanese food in a humble strip center on the agricultural outskirts of Oxnard. We stopped in here for a quick bento lunch on the way to the Seabee museum, and we are glad we did :) The restaurant was clean and busy, always good signs at a sushi bar. We ordered 3 bento boxes, a chicken teriyaki bowl, and two sushi rolls. The spicy tuna roll here was the best I had in California - very close to the way I make mine at home. The teriyaki chicken bowl came out hot and fresh with a pleasant sauce covering the chicken, on fluffy SEASONED sushi rice. So many lazy Japanese places don't rinse or season the rice for their donburi bowls, which should always be done. It's a pet peeve of mine. This place did both, which means they know what they are doing with the rice - a foundational food in Japan. The bentos have a good variety of freshly made Japanese favorites: miso soup, shrimp and vegetable tempura (depending on the order), 4 pc California roll, and salad. I got the sashimi and sushi combo bento, which had thick delicious pieces of yellowtail, ahi tuna, and salmon over spiralized daikon. The sashimi was perfect, and is THE proof that the food here is very good. There is no hiding any flaws in sashimi - it's either great or awful. This sashimi was great, and for that we give this jewel of a place 5 excellent sushi and sashimi stars Eat here if you live in or pass through Oxnard. You'll be glad you did. read more

This Japanese restaurant is owned by a Korean pastor and his wife from what I remember my parents told me. They have a great lunch menu consisting of bento boxes for ~$7.99, a tofu bowl for ~$4.50 and a California handroll for ~$3.50, which my co-workers and I ordered. The food came out quick during a busy lunch hour and everything tasted good. Only thing the restaurant needs a bit improvement is listening to the customer's needs because my co-worker Griselda had mentioned to the chef to not add onions to her tofu bowl if it came with any (she's highly allergic to onions) and when she got her bowl, she found one sliver of it throughout her meal. I know it's only one piece but it worried me that would if there were more pieces in her meal and she could have gotten hives in reaction to the one piece. Jussayin. I have came here many times for dinner than lunch and I would say my dinner experience here is 24163 times better than my first lunch experience today and 836247 times better sushi here than the sushi served at City Buffet across the street where they used actual canned tuna in their sushi :) read more

A solid 4 stars. Delicious and inexpensive! I've been here a handful of times and each experience has been very good! My last experience was April 16th, 30 minutes before closing. I was in a sushi mood and didn't want to drive far and this place is 5 minutes away. I ordered a Teriyaki Chicken bento box (which comes with 2 big scoops of rice, LOTS of teriyaki chicken, four pieces of Cali roll, salad, 2 fried pot stickers and a tempura shrimp) all for $6.95 and a Crunch Roll. My eyes were much bigger than my stomach because when I got the food I was astounded by the amount of containers I received. The guy who took my order gave me extra Cali rolls since they were closing soon, which I appreciated. He gave me extra condiments for everything. I'm sure you could have guessed, but I did NOT eat all my food. In fact when I put all my left overs together, it looked like one intact meal. DEFINITELY coming again! read more

I believe Maki Plus is under new management and let me tell you, it has made the biggest difference! Their spicy tuna rolls are delicious, that's always my go to! I hadn't been here in a very long time and my husband suggested it for lunch the other day. I was excited to eat here again! The restaurant is small, but clean and well lit. The staff greeted and seated us right away and as we sat down a party of five came in (large for this size restaurant). We were not handed menus and my husband grabbed two off the counter for us instead. When the woman came to take our drink orders she first went to the party of five, seated after us, and got their orders first. When she came to our table I asked for a Diet Coke and was told they were out. They also had no other diet drinks so I ordered a water. After she left our table my husband reminded me we had sodas in our car in the parking lot so I brought one in. Then the woman came back to our table and happily informed us she had located a Diet Coke for me. It was cold and I accepted it even though I already had opened my own. I ordered a cucumber salad and a shrimp tempura crunch roll. I was surprised when the roll came out with two sauces slathered all over it. I asked about them and was told one was spicy mayo. I can't handle spicy foods so I ordered a second roll without the spicy mayo. The staff (man and woman) defended the roll and checked the menu to confirm the sauce was "pictured" (the pictures are very small and the sauce was not listed in the description of the roll). I said it was my fault and asked them to make me another roll. The second roll came without any sauce so I had to ask for eel sauce, which was promptly provided. The cucumber salad was the strangest and least appealing I've ever had at a Japanese restaurant and I order this salad at pretty much every single Japanese restaurant I eat at. It consisted of a bed of lettuce (very unusual for this kind of salad) and cucumber *sticks* arranged on top. Everything was coated in a dressing that was too spicy for me (also unusual for this salad). It felt as if someone saw that Japanese restaurants serve a "cucumber salad" and came up with their own guess as to what that meant without actually having had a cucumber salad (sunomono) at any other restaurant. Even Lazy Dog (not a Japanese restaurant) makes a more authentic Japanese Cucumber Salad than Maki. Very strange and disappointing. My second roll was delicious and I would definitely order it again. Second roll was 4 stars for sure as was the fact that they didn't charge us for the first roll even though I would have paid (and we tipped heavily to compensate for the uncharged roll). Pretty much everything else was 2-3 stars and if I return here I think I'll stick to my roll (without spicy sauce). PS my husband enjoyed his bento box of teriyaki chicken just fine. I have been at Maki Plus for dine in, take out and "I buy, you fly" meals. Each time, I have NEVER been disappointed. I don't come here often but every time I do it's great. They take their time with making the sushi and plates but it's well worth it. This last visit there only seemed to be two employees there but they were both quick to help our group of four adults. All the food that came out was great and it was a lovely and intimate meal. The gentleman that was working there was also able to make a special roll for my son to take home. He did a fantastic job and I was pleased with the presentation. The taste must have been great also because my son ate it quickly and said he enjoyed it. I should have taken a picture but by the time I remembered it was to late. I love to lurk Yelp and seldom write reviews however I wanted to today. I tried this restaurant back in 2019 and have been enjoying their food ever since. The first time I went to patron the establishment and see what the place was about I remember asking for a menu and a beer to get comfortable. A couple sitting by the door getting ready to leave had asked the waitress for to a doggy bag. As soon as the waitress left to get the bag the couple left in a hurry. I was able to see their car leaving and the young waitress run outside to see them turn a corner. After the waitress came back I learned that the couple had dined and dashed. Yikes. Per my last review one of the staff was horrible and totally ruined my experience but she hasn't worked there in a while so it's only fair I update my review. The owner is so sweet and nice. This place went to sh*t!! I have been going here since 2007, but I haven't been here since 2018ish. I knew they were under new ownership and maybe that's where the freshness of the food got left too. Recently ordered what I usually ordered, udon soup, what used to be some amazing "heart attack" jalapeño stuffed chilies and some rolls. Every time I ordered my family went nuts bc of how delicious and affordable the food was. Sadly, and I write this with great sadness, that the only heart attack I got this last time was the price of the food, the order that was not correctly taken and the food that was just...okay, I'm no connoisseur but I'm sure they used day old shrimp we'll find out if I get the runs tomorrow. I ate here last week. I don't think I will ever be back. A coworker and I decided to come here during our lunch break. BAD DECISION! lt took us 45 mins to get our rolls. We could not even eat them since we had to drive back to work! We put the rolls in the fridge and waited until after work to eat. Such a disappointing meal! The taste was off and the rolls were not fresh at all. We actually threw some of them away since we were starving and had to eat. If not we would've tossed all of them away.The next day we both had stomachaches! I don't know how people eat here with their bad service and horrible rolls. I told them it was warm... they said she just bought them and that it was the coldest beer they had. I asked the girl working there if they can give me a discount. The owner came out and asked, "you don't want it". And I said, "no I'm not going to drink a warm beer". She took it back and didn't even offer to give me half off or anything. Ok, so I really owe this place an updated review. So at the beginning of the year I moved in close this sushi place so I have been here quite often lately. Like I mentioned previously this place got remodeled and got under new ownership. Things definitely changed. I was a bit upset at first but they also recently changed the chef. The rolls have been great lately. They stepped up their game. Sushi doesn't fall apart any more. I love all their rolls. They also have side noodles for $2.99 not ok the menu. I like the crunch roll and the baked salmon roll but they're all great. I enjoy the spicy edamame too. They also have beer. The place is small but clean and the cashier is always nice and friendly. read more

I usually don't yelp but this place kinda impelled me to give it a go. When i first walked in, i thought it was small and cozy. Staff wasn't very friendly. I ordered the teriyaki chicken and it was so dry I couldn't finish my food. But I guess at 6.99 a plate I couldn't expect anything more then something you would get at a fast food drive through place. I would rather just pay a little more and get a better experience and better quality food. My partner ordered the teriyaki beef box and it was like beef jerky. The only good thing about this place was the Miso soup and the vegetables. I will not be coming back. read more
