I came here yesterday (Friday) to meet up with my friend and we're both so glad we discovered this spot! I've been to Baci next door several times and never realized this restaurant was where it was! There is a free smallish parking lot in front as the lot is shared with the other stores in the strip mall that it's located in. I arrived around 12:45pm and was lucky enough to find ONE spot remaining. When I left around 2:45pm, there were a lot more available spots. Upon entering, I just sat where my friend was sitting. It looks like you can pick anywhere to sit and eventually someone will come over to take your order. All the wait staff were very nice and patient with us, as I was indecisive with what I wanted to order; everything looked so good! To order, there was a QR code on the table that you can scan and then browse the menu on your phone. A bit random but I really appreciated the bag hooks that were on the side of the table! I ended up ordering a Grilled Shrimp Quesadilla and my friend ordered a Regular Margarita and a Carne Asada Burrito. We were both very happy with our choices! Flavorful and fresh, my quesadilla was the perfect size and my friends burrito was pretty filling that she had to pack the rest to go. This taqueria located in a strip mall was a good find. Inside was a moderate space. You get the menu by scanning the QR code on the table, not my favorite way of accessing a menu. I got the fish taco and lengua taco (tongue). The fish taco was typical but not bad. The lengua was tender and fatty, a truly underrated cut of meat. My daughter got the birria flautas. Stopped here for lunch with my boyfriend and didn't leave disappointed. My boyfriend ordered a burrito bowl with chicken - good sized portion with delicious, fresh ingredients. I ordered a cochinita pibil taco & an al pastor taco. Both were well-prepared. Meat was juicy & flavorful. The sever gave us some of their homemade hot sauces, both of which paired well with the food. I love that we discovered this Mexican place - its in a random strip mall in a corner area of Old country road, but it's worth stopping to check out. It's just nice to have somewhere nicer than a Chipotle or Moe's for once, with service and reasonable prices. As you can see from my past reviews I have been here twice before in 2023 and 2024 for lunch at the bar. I returned here again solo at the bar for lunch. I enjoyed my regular margarita with salt for $14.51. I also enjoyed my burrito Birria with braised beef with a small side salad and consomme for $19. I used my credit card so I was charged an additional 4% credit card surcharge. My credit card total bill was $36.40 excluding gratuity. The 4% cash discount total bill was $34.94. This is definitely a hidden gem in LI at a small shopping area. I nearly almost passed it but follow the directions on maps, waze will definitely get you lost. Food was pretty damn good. I ordered the Birra, fish and al pastor tacos. Very flavorful and fresh. The churros were good too. Service: They do have drinks but if you ask for a drink not from the drink menu, they side eye you and tell you they can't make it. With a full stocked bar, I would think you can make any drink. I came here for lunch with a coworker based off of his recommendation. It was definitely a great lunch spot! The drinks were absolutely amazing with a natural juices inside of my Mojito. We came in as soon as they opened for lunch and they were already on top of our needs. The food came out quickly and it was absolutely delicious. I got the lengua tacos and carne asada burrito. I get lengua whenever I get tacos and this place has the best lengua tacos I've had so far. Soft, light, but very flavorful. The tortilla is also light which I liked as it puts more flavor emphasis on the lengua. The burrito was great- the rice was soft and the vegetables elevated the flavor of the burrito. The meat was tender throughout each bite. The food was so good we got birria tacos after and they were excellent. Soft, meaty and a burst of flavor. Good balance of the cheese and meat. I originally rated this place four star last visit but this taco experience was a buzz kill. My daughter and I-drove from Plainview to get some Baja fish tacos which we enjoyed last time . You know when you leave a place and still think about it randomly? That's this place for me! Me and my cousins all left speechless because everything we ate was just too good! There is limited seating but the staff makes you feel at home. We started off with the guava, mango, and tamarind margaritas which were a hit! 4.5 You can taste, smell, and see the care and quality. This has got to be a hidden gem in a small shopping center near the corner of Old Country Road and Merrick Avenue. From the outside, it's nothing special. It doesn't have a sign that stands out too much, and since it's north-facing, the signage is in the shadow. Once you step inside, though, the colors are vibrant and welcoming. Even the light fixtures have designs in them, which is a really nice touch. Pair that with a friendly server, and the place gets even brighter. Food-wise, we got the carne asada nachos, a chicken burrito, carnitas quesadilla, and some churros. The nachos were awesome. The chips were nice and thick, and there were plenty of toppings in several layers. What I most enjoyed about these nachos was the fact that they didn't have nacho (sometimes artificial) cheese. Instead, they made sure to provide enough Chihuahua cheese. The sauces they provide are also pretty good. Warning - the red one is pretty spicy! The chicken burrito and the carnitas quesadilla were also good. It's a nice touch that they grilled the burrito a bit. I did wish that the quesadilla and burrito had a bit more cheese, though. Be careful when you eat the churros - when they come out, they're really hot. Also, when I bit into one, the filling squirted out and got on my sleeve and the floor. The people seated next to us saw the whole thing, and when we made eye contact, we couldn't help but laugh. If I'm in the mood for Mexican food and in the area, I'll definitely come back here and try more. read more

We've visited Mala Madre Taqueria a couple of times for both dine-in and take-out, and think Mala Madre offers better food than other nearby Mexican restaurants. Dishes we've had include: - Carne Asada Burrito: $15.95 ($17.37 with tax) - Shrimp Burrito - Vegetarian Burrito: $11.95 ($13.01 with tax). Get this. - Vegetarian Taco: $5.45 ($5.93 with tax) - Lengua Taco: $5.95 ($6.47 with tax) The burritos seemed on the small side, but they were packed with ingredients. The Vegetarian Burrito was one of the most delicious burritos I've had, with the fragrant flavors of the portobello mushrooms being especially noticeable. Portobellos hold water, but the moisture from each bite is absorbed by the burrito rice, so the food isn't overly moist. The Carne Asada and shrimp burritos were less flavorful, but green and hot sauces are provided on the side. Other: - The background music was loud, ostensibly to drown-out conversations from other patrons. - Service was good. We saw staff open the door for senior citizens coming into and leaving the establishment. - There is one well-maintained unisex bathroom with ADA grab bars. - We were charged 8.875% (New York City) sales tax instead of 8.625% (Nassau County) sales tax. - The receipt says there is a 3.75% discount for paying with cash, but that amount isn't calculated on the receipt. read more

I want to love Mala Madre. The food quality across multiple items is excellent. Tacos, enchiladas, rice & beans...everything is delicious. Why 3 stars? Because for takeout I've had the same issue multiple times- the tortilla that comes with the tacos falls apart by the time I get home and eat the tacos. Either double the tortilla or thicken the single one. Also of less importance: there's no need for lettuce on top of enchiladas on a takeout order because it melts into a non appetizing lump due to the enchilada heat in the container. I arrived a bit early to only one table occupied and was told to take a seat at the bar. The space is lovely and I'd be happy to dine here. As I waited for my order, 2 more tables came in plus people for the bar. I watched the bartender make margaritas and they looked so good. Now onto the food; the fish taco was A-mazing. One of my favorite places to go for Mexican food in the area. Decent prices, nothing too outrageous. I tend to get the enchiladas which come with rice and beans. (rating 4/5 with the green sauce). I usually ask for some hot sauce on the side as well. I usually dine in. The restaurant is not the largest, but spacing is comfortable and there are usually many seats available. There are also some seats at the bar. The dining area is clean and well-kept. No complaints about the service, very standard. We finally checked this place out, it happened to be on a late afternoon Friday afternoon. When we walked in, we were immediately greeted by Ricardo. He was very polite and professional. They had great music playing, so the ambiance was nice. A mix of couples and families at the various tables. We ordered the guacamole and the queso fundido (with steak) as appetizers. The Guac was a nice size, it also came with plenty of fresh chips, it was excellent. This is a great fresh Mexican spot in the Westbury/Garden City area! We asked for no tomato in the guacamole and it was well made with a healthy amount of cilantro which we really like. The shrimp quesadilla is more well flavored than the average one and has a kind of Cajun spice to it which is really good. It also comes with a green cilantro sauce was really good. For the tacos, I tried the shrimp taco which also came with a good flavorful Cajun sauce. The beef taco was good and fresh with fresh onion, but a bit bland unless you add the green sauce. My husband had the birria taco and the Al pastor taco. He really liked both of them too. We did pick up and parking was easy.
