Grab a bowl and tongs then go get your ingredients you like. Fresh ingredients, sauce bar, plenty of seating. If you're too lazy to do hot pot at home this is a good option! $14.99 lb

We came on a Sunday night, and it was pretty empty with plenty of seats available. You picked your own ingredients and select your broth and they cook it for you. There are 9 different broths to choose from, and a decent selection of ingredients. This place is pretty much a self serve restaurant, you then clean up after yourself.

The selection is great! The staff is friendly and the soup is thick and flavorful. Would definitely recommend!!!

Still great! I just had this bone broth flavored Malatang, and it was a game-changer. The broth was the absolute star of the show. The soup is perfectly balanced between the rich, numbing, savory notes of a classic Malatang base and the tangy, spicy, fragrant kick of Tom Yum. You can tell they use a really high-quality Tom Yum paste because you get that distinct herbal aroma without it being overwhelming. The splash of the lemon slice on top was the perfect finishing touch, cutting through the richness of the broth and making it super refreshing. The ingredients were fresh and hearty. I loaded mine up with ramen noodles, quail eggs, and leafy greens, and they all absorbed that amazing orange broth like a sponge. It was incredibly comforting, especially with the colder weather. If you love spicy, tangy, bold flavors, you HAVE to try this fusion twist. It is the ultimate comfort food. 10/10 will be back for more!

We love this place because it's the cheapest mala tang in San Mateo! I really enjoy their broths but I do wish there was more selection for the beef and meat. Edit: we came all the way here and they refused to honor the labor day discount for some reason. Very disappointing and misleading advertising since it didn't mention San Mateo being excluded for the promotion.

I've had Tang Bar and Zhangliang In the area before and wanted to try Mala Town this time, and was quite disappointed. Service was great and friendly, but my savory dry pot was wet and not very savory/flavorful at all. I frequently get dry pots when I go to similar places and it's never been this way before. The sauce bar saved my meal because I was able to make my own sauce to eat the food with. The usual savory, numbing spicy just wasn't there even with mild unlike other places. Perhaps I needed to make it mild for more flavor, but it doesn't explain how watery the dry pot was overall. May come again if friends decide to come, and I'll get the soup broths next time.

I took out a bowl on a weekday evening. The place was not too busy. You can pick anything in the counter and is charged by the pound. Soup base is free. I went for their top favorite, bone broth. It was delicious. The bread soaked all the soup and was delicious. Rice cake and pumkin were other standout items. Weight adds up quickly.

Missing ingredients entirely, specifically potato, black fungus mushrooms, and some more The ingredients that were there such as pork belly were empty, and only refilled after asking the employees. Spicy broth does not have much flavor. Pork broth is much better and will get that next time

Lively little eatery on 3rd closer to El Camino. Hip hop was blasting and a younger crowd mostly inside enjoying hot pot with their friends. We did have to wait a bit for the back of house to bring out new bowls to put our ingredients in. DIY where u chose from a big selection of vegetables, seafood and meats. You get "weighed" in at the end and tell the counter which soup broth you'd like. Then they bring it out once done.

MALA-YUM. I love their portion sizes for the ingredients (esp the thin slice of spam). The soup variety is nice when I want a change from Tang Bar or Zhang Liang

4/4/26 FYI. My daughter dinner. Huge bowl $37

I wanted udon from next door, but my daughter wanted this. As usual, I lost. I love and try to spoil my daughter when I can. Quality/Quantity - Newest coolest trend; I see this type of restaurant popping up everywhere. Self service restaurant. You walk the cafeteria style tables and pick what you want for your meal/soup. Sold by weight $14.99lb. So off we go. I did not even complain when my daughter was picking all that inexpensive food, lol. I went almost straight to the seafood and meats!! After filling your bowl, you go to the register to weigh and pay. Pick your soup and spice level. Get a table and they bring you your food after cooking it. I got the lowest weight as I am the lightest eater (but heaviest drinker, lol). We went to Chingu, a Korean Tapas Bar (restaurant) prior to coming here. See other Yelp reviews. No surprise, but my daughter got the heaviest bowl, lol. Sorry, I did not think of taking pictures before... We took our left overs home and added more ingredients to have a second serving. :) Ambiance - Small location. Plenty of employees. Always cleaning and refilling the foods, keeping everything fresh. Open 7 days a week from 11:30am to 9:30pm. Very limited metered street parking that is free on weekends. Service - Good. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. I got a broth refill, thank you!! I was told that they do not usually do that. Price - I felt expensive. $85 for 3 bowls of soup?!?! Plus tip. $14.99/lb. Owner Comment - Please update your "From the Business" information as it still has $9.99/lb. Congrats on your success since 2025. As long as my daughter wants to come, so will I.

Malatown Express is one of those easy go-to spots when you just want something quick and comforting. The malatang is the main thing here--build-your-own style, pick your stuff, pick your spice level, and you're good. Broth actually has flavor, not watered down. Place is pretty chill. Solid if you're in the area and craving something hot and customizable. Our experience was going well until my son saw a tiny bug in his soup. Hence, the 4-star.

This place is sooo gooddd bro 100% recommended fr. They have the best quality of fresh food and best employees. People are so nice here and supportive his name Evan

Wide selection of items to choose from. They have taste testers of each of the soup bases! I got tom yum soup and it was great! The sauce bar is frequently filled and has a variety of options.

Both times I've come I hadn't had to wait very long and our second time was with a large group including kids. Our server was great in helping us preorder before we could get seated and we only waited 15 minutes. We all ordered the same things: half of us ordered the original aburasoba and the other half ordered the homura aburasoba and the food came out quickly. They kindly gave us little bowls for the kiddos and forks and all the kids loved the noodles and the adults shared a large pitcher of beer. All in all, best aburasoba and one of my favorite spots in San Mateo!

The seating inside is pretty tight so your table is basically an inch from the next one, almost like a communal dining experience. Nikumori Aburasoba ($18.50): Spicy pork, pork slices, green onion, and ajitama. The spicy ground pork was delicious and they were generous with the thin pork slices, though those weren't as good as the ground pork. The ajitama was perfectly jammy. The aburasoba flavors were okay but less flavorful than mazesoba, which I now know I prefer. Wagyu Roast Beef Aburasoba ($25.50) + Chashu ($1.75) + Spicy Minced Pork ($3.95) + Ajitama ($2.50): Wagyu roast beef, crispy onions, green onions, butter onion sauce, yogurt sauce, and raw egg yolk. The chashu was average but the wagyu roast beef was thin and incredibly tender. The yogurt sauce and raw egg yolk made this one pretty creamy which I actually liked more than the Nikumori. Ume ($1.50): Did not like this at all. Hard pass.

Noodles were chewier than most beef noodle soups I've had and the beef pieces were very tender and soft. The soup wasn't too spicy by itself and had alot of depth and flavor. -Pro-tip: There is a little self-serve station near the kitchen where you can get add'l condiments like cilantro, green onion, chili, and pickled daikon. SCORE. Add in the cilantro/green onion for a flavor explosion. -Ordered one of the combo noodles + 2 sides. For my sides, I got a blanched bok choy and a fried gyoza. The bok choy was needed to help cut the spiciness of the soup and to add veggies b/c without it, you'd just be having carbs, beef, and soup. Gyoza was a win too. Service: FAST and friendly, just how I like my non-fine dining restaurant experiences. You scan a QR code at the table and then choose an english/chinese option. If you have questions, you can ask the staff, but there isn't a TON of options to choose from, so make it easy on yourself and order a noodle soup. Ambiance: Ample seating at 1:30pm on a Sunday. Didn't have to wait, which was a big plus as all the other restaurants in San Mateo over near 3rd/4th and B street were packed. Overall: Highly recommend and would come again.
