We passed by, saw the sign about the lunch special -- $12.99 every day from 11 to about 3/3:30 -- and paused. Because that's already sounding like a win. While we're standing there debating, a concierge from a nearby building tells us, "It's really good. They make everything fresh to order, so it might take a little longer, but it's worth it." And you already know -- fresh to order? Say less. So we went in. I got the sweet and sour chicken with rice, and my mom got General Tso's chicken over rice. I actually like how they set it up -- you choose your rice, you can add a soup (we both did miso), and they even include a free can of soda with the lunch special. But of course, we didn't do soda. I got the strawberry tea latte, which was phenomenal, and my mom stuck to her brown sugar bubble milk, which was just as good as she hoped. The menu is extensive. The Pardner does not like this place as much as Xi'an Famous Foods -- but I do…read more What I love: - The roti-like flatbread (bai ji mo; 白吉馍) used in the rou jia mo ("Chinese burgers") are as well laminated as the finest croissants this city has to offer. We sometimes touch our delivery orders up in the air fryer / toaster oven and the revived layers are excellent -- but they are even more magnificent when eaten fresh off the griddle and freshly filled. - Rou jia mo are generously filled with moist, well seasoned protein, whether it's beef, lamb, pork, or chicken. The lamb and pork registered as slightly spicy by our standards. The chicken included slices of green and red pepper (I'd guess jalapeno) with seeds left in that could really spice you out if you took a lucky / unlucky bite. I don't remember the beef registering as spicy at all. But our spice receptors are mostly dead so please double check if you're very sensitive to heat. - The spicy chili oil at the more famous Xi'an Famous Foods is almost certainly spiked with MSG and generously poured over just about every dish on the menu. (This might explain why the Pardner is so obsessed with XFF.) You don't see all the spicy chili oil in the food at Bites of Xi'an and I don't feel the overwhelming thirst after eating here that I do after eating food that is spiked with MSG. I consider this a huge plus since I don't feel bad about feeding this food to the progeny. - The hand ripped noodle dishes are made with care: wide, well textured (even by delivery) and believably hand ripped. I think the Pardner orders his with cumin lamb or "meat sauce" -- but proteins (probably the same preps that are used elsewhere on the menu) for all options are moist, well seasoned, well prepared generally. There's a touch of mala heat, but mostly, the spice derives from regular chili and registers as moderate to us, especially in comparison to XFF's version. - Water basin mutton is a pleasantly light dish, perfect for cool spring weather. I love the generous serving of clear, non-oily, slightly funky mutton-y broth; thin slices of tender daikon and tofu; generous slices of tender, moist, lean mutton; and pleasantly restrained amount of glass / mung bean noodles. It's wonderfully comforting and safe for those with wheat allergies and intolerance, possibly safe for those with celiac's disease. What I love less: - It's hard to find fault with any food item on this focused menu, really, but if I had to find a lesser favorite, the dumplings we've tried -- fried and boiled -- have all been made with thickish skins and extremely velveted, slightly mushy, filling. Truth be told, the fambly isn't very discriminating when it comes to dumplings and finds these doable, but I don't think BOX's dumplings will be winning any awards. Final note: Of course there's a deterioration in texture in transit, so you will want to revive delivery bai ji mo / rou ji mo in a toaster / air fryer if you can. But best case scenario: Eat in!
