Loved the ambiance. I ordered the green curry, and I ate it all trying to decide if I liked it or not. It was different because they make their curry instead of just stirring in green curry paste like I do. My husband got the special, fried noodles with wagyu. We came here on a whim just to have their mango sticky rice pudding and boy we were not disappointed. It was luscious, creamy and fresh! The amalgamation of flavors and texture is sublime. The staff are super nice and helpful. Good atmosphere. Unfortunately the taste of certain items are just off. 1. candied bacon adds nothing to papaya salad. 2. There is something off with the pho broth. 3. Green tea salad typically involves pickled tea leaves - I just don't taste the "green tea" component. 4. Vietnamese coffee is not Arabica bean but a robusta drip coffee. This restaurant is the polar opposite of those Garland SE Asia spots where there is no decor and service but the pho broth is banging. I walked in and was greeted promptly. The hostess took my order right away, and the food got to me promptly. They even included a complimentary side of their very popular sticky rice. The portion size is just right for the price to make it a good value. I ordered the Pad Thai medium and it was the exactly and perfectly medium spice. The dish was made with fresh ingredients and was hot when I received it. It had a good flavor. If it had a little more savory (maybe peanut sauce) it would be even better. The cilantro was a nice addition to the pad Thai I think I haven't seen before. The dining room was full today, but they still managed to give me stellar service, and the manager even stopped by the say hello while I was waiting for my food. This place went downhill fast. I left a five star review a year ago. But they have delivered the wrong order twice in the last month. I ignored it the first time, but this time, I called to address it. The person that answered would not identify herself. I found out the manager was Delvin (or something similar). She told me that it was probably not their fault, and they did their job. But she refused to give her name. They refused to deliver me the correct order or refund my money. Unbelievable. Really solid dine here. Annika (sp?) was very friendly, helpful, and informative. The main draw was the beautiful patio, which we were intent on enjoying since it was such a beautiful night. That said, I didn't love the food. The shishito peppers had a nice tempura battering on them, but it was hard to use the dipping sauce they came with because the peppers are long, the bowl is shallow, and the sauce is not quite viscous enough to stay on the peppers well. Also, many of the peppers were exceptionally spicy. We order shishitos at every restaurant we visit whenever they are available and are used to maybe 10-20% having a high spice level, but my wife could not eat these at all. My vegetarian green curry with tofu wasn't bad at all and neither was my wife's noodle dish, but on both of them we remarked separately that it seemed like they were a bit too conservative with the flavors. We still liked the food, but it wasn't as good as I'd have expected to complement such strong service and ambiance. But, it was still good enough not to detract from the overall quality of the experience. I would go again, especially to try the iced coffee they brew there. Someday! read more

The beer here is wonderful. The food is good, but can be hit or miss. They serve everything mild and you have to specifically ask for chilis if you want it hotter. I've tried the pad Thai, and most of the curries. The green papaya salad has a lot going on with green beans and bacon but the flavor of the dressing is so delicious. The servers and bartenders have been very friendly each time I've gone. All in all, just be very specific about how you want your food and you will have a good time in a cute setting. read more

A friend has been wanting me to try this place since summer, and we finally went in for her birthday dinner. Food was excellent, cocktails were great but my Hendricks and tonic, wish it was better. Their signature cocktails were great however. I was a happy camper tasting all these wonderfully flavored food. Love the complimentary sticky rice that comes in a banana leaf with sauce on the side. Good stuff and it was a perfect portion so I didn't have to order a huge bulk of rice that I wasn't going to eat. It went perfectly with my chicken on a stick that came with red and peanut sauce. I also really loved the spicy edamame - seasoned with just the right amount of zest. I have ordered this at other places where they just dump hot sauce on it so I appreciate that they did not do that. I'll be back for the edamame for sure. I wanted so much to like the food, but it was just not good. The curry crab dip was just a mistake to order. The shrimp chips alone were tastier than with the crab dip on them. My daughter had the cod. The cod portion was very small and she couldn't have the rice so she was very disappointed, and the meal left her hungry. My mother had the tacos and she did enjoy those. The fresh rolls were also disappointing-the equivalent summer rolls are better tasting just about anywhere else. I had the pad Thai-it was just okay. My family and I's go to spot. We used to drive down to west village to eat here, but this location is much more roomier so we go here now. I always get the pad thai with chicken and shrimp and it has literally never disappointed me. More Absolute musts are the Vietnamese meatballs and any of their rices. Delicious. This food also stores pretty well so if their portions are too big for you the staff will happily pack it up for you. The best part of Malai is that it can be a casual brunch or a nice little outing.
