Well-deserved and long overdue review. I'm in my late 30s and this is my first set of dental implants. I was referred to Dr. Malek for 2 implants in the upper front, very visible, area of my jaw. I have never had implants so I didn't know what to expect, nor the right questions to ask. First off, Dr. Malek's office is absolutely beautiful, just like her! I'm not 100% sure but I believe it's an "all women" staff. I love that!! I do wish the invoicing was a bit more clear. I, personally, like to know how much my debt will be before accepting it. Unfortunately, that's how all dental offices work, I just did not ask the right questions at the right time. That's a me problem! I was given Fentanyl as the local anesthetic. The surgery went well, I healed fast (3-4 months), no complications. Dr. Malek personally followed up with me the very next day after surgery. She even established open communication via text message. After the first week, I thought one of my implant's placement was incorrect but Dr. Malek reassured me that it was the swelling that made it appear as such and once it heals, it will be even. She was right, it healed beautifully!! I couldn't ask for a better dental implant experience. Dr. Malek is an amazing Periodontics but here's the reason I absolutely LOVE Dr. Malek as a person... after she released me from her care back to my general dentist to place the abutment and crown, my former dentist broke one of the abutments in my implant. Traumatized! I walked out of his office with a missing front tooth and no remedy. I didn't know what to do so I contacted Dr. Malek in tears. Just to mention, this was 2 days prior my international vacation. My anxiety was through the roof. On her day off, she called me back just as shocked as I was. She followed up with me multiple times for about 2-3 weeks. In my heart, I felt that she actually cared about my health and the turnout of this unfortunate incident. After successfully completing her part in my dental journey, she had no obligation to provide empathy and care about me but she did! Although things took a horrible turn in my treatment, Dr. Malek was always there for me and it was great to get a second opinion after being failed by my general dentist. Good health/dental care is difficult to find in AZ, especially in the West Valley. I'm so glad my former dentist referred me to Dr. Malek. She's one in a million and great at what she does. I went to Dr. Malek for a new patient exam and was told I did not have a recession and nothing was wrong with me. (May 2024). However, I was not pleased with a specific tooth of mine, being that my roots were starting to show. About two weeks after my new patient exam, I messaged Dr. Malek's front office. I expressed my concern with my tooth and they asked me to text them a photo of it. Dr. Malek agreed we should do a gum graft. (June 2024) From that point of agreeing to a gum graft procedure, I went straight to booking my surgery date with the front office. I was not given a pre-op appointment or any consultation regarding my gum graft procedure. I feel foolish proceeding without the doctor scheduling a pre-op appointment with me. I trusted the process, but I regret it. My gum graft procedure was scheduled (July 2024). I do appreciate Dr. Malek texting me 1 day post op. Unfortunately, things started taking a turn around my 2 week post-op. During my appointment, she stated it "wasn't the results" she wanted. I had contacted Dr. Malek numerous times regarding concerns with bleeding/swelling, gum graft itself. Dr. Malek told me "she doesn't have a crystal ball" and can't give me an exact answer as to if my graft will cover my roots. I appreciate honesty, but the demeanor made me feel uncomfortable speaking to her. I felt some questions were dodged or I was being belittled. Fast forward to my six weeks post-op appointment - She looked at my site and said "this is the best we're going to get." She said it was successful with thickening of the gum, but not successful with covering my tooth. I was also hesitant to proceed with the procedure because I was currently on a prescription medication during that time. I did ask Dr. Malek about my medication prior to surgery and she said "it should be okay". My 6 week post op and the days that followed, were all over the place. When I asked why it didn't work out (coverage), I was told various answers - my gums are inflamed, but per my new patient exam, nothing was wrong. Then, I was told it might be hormone issues. Next, I was told it might be my DNA/genetics and it isn't anything serious or wrong with me, but it's something that's just there (inflammation), etc. A couple days later, I spoke with Dr. Malek. I appreciated her communicating with me, but I didn't appreciate feeling spoken down upon. I felt she didn't take (some) accountability for things, but rather tried to point fingers at me. "I didn't know you had this or were on this medication". I would have appreciated it if Dr. Malek would have taken a different approach with her tone and demeanor. It came off too harsh and talking herself up, rather than being there for her patient and taking some accountability. I respect that she is always available to converse with her patients and willing to listen. I respect that she was able to refund me half of what I paid for, which was better than nothing. She gave me suggestions on other alternatives, but all didn't seem effective for my current situation. I'm unsure if she realized what she said or how she said it, but it came across harsh. Things don't always work out, but I do believe in mutual respect. read more

I have been seeing Dr Malek for more than 10 years and would recommend her for my children and even grandchildren in the future. She is extremely professional, performing needed work of the highest quality, and works WITH you to make informed decisions about your care! I found Dr Malek more than 10 years ago while seeking a second/third opinion. The first two dentists recommended that I have multiple teeth removed and replaced with implants, starting with $20K upfront and attending "hygiene" classes. (In my defense, it had been 2 years since prior cleaning as I completed doctoral dissertation.). What these first two were telling me just didn't seem to ring true. I booked an appointment with Dr Malek and was surprised and greatly relieved. She recommended a deep cleaning and then to go from there. In short, Dr.Malek involves the patient as a partner i their own care, providing current information and costs for treatment upfront. In my decade working with her and her staff of excellent hygienists, I have always come away from the office with a feeling that they truly care. My husband also uses Dr. Malek's services and his experiences and perceptions are nearly identical to mine. We hope that she remains in practice for many years to come. Thank you very much! I am impressed with the honesty and the lack of an oversell on procedures!! I had multiple opinions prior, some with concern and another with a "you are going to lose your teeth" if you don't spend thousands of dollars right now!!" I do have a couple obvious issues with my gums. However, my gums do not bleed, they are not swollen and they are a healthy pink color. I did not accept that I was about to lose my teeth, but I was a bit concerned. I did not accept that I needed a deep cleaning as suggested by another at the price tag of $800!! I consulted with Dr. Malek and she was extremely honest!! She explained that yes, where I can see with my naked eye excessive gum recession, I need a graft, in fact in two different places. The rest of my gums were deemed healthy and I was told that I do NOT need deep cleaning. She did indicate that I need the work done, but she didn't try to scare me into thinking it has to be tomorrow, or even next month. She showed me WHY she thought my gums were in good shape in comparison to why I needed help in the other two areas. She told me that most definitely I need work done and not to wait for years because then she would not be able to fix it. The "sooner the better" and I agree!! I am pleased to feel like I have FINALLY found someone who is not only honest, but very ethical!!! I am not looking forward to having the work done, but I know I will will get it done by Dr. Malek!! read more

Where do I begin ... 1st - They made me pay out-of-pocket for a 2nd initial exam performed. So basically they received double pay for the SAME EXACT EXAM. I was double billed for my initial exam simply because they knew my insurance company would cover the 1st charge. My Ortho Mgmt team reviewed this and even they still couldn't figure out why I was charged twice for the SAME EXAM. 2nd - Their hygienist did my root scaling in the most painful and malicious way possible simply because she lost an argument with me that concerned her doing all four quads at the same time. She argued with me for 5 minutes that she couldn't do it all at once not knowing that the front office had already confirmed with my insurance company that all could be done at once. Once the front office advised her that I was right and I was scheduled to do it all at once, it was all down hill from there. She ripped my mouth apart and permanently damaged nerves at the same time. I cannot chew on the right side of my mouth now. If the pain continues, I will get a lawyer. 3rd - They always made me pay with a credit card on my way out the door and always asked for money towards the next visit to make my appointment for services not even rendered. However I never noticed them making anyone else pay an invoice upfront. They singled me out and their hygienist tortured me. There are plenty of quality Periodontists out here. I was referred to Dr. Malek in 7/18 for an extraction of a failing front tooth and placement of a bone graft and eventually an implant. My first procedure, extraction and bone graft seemed fine until, within hours, the area began to swell and blister such that I couldn't wear my temporary partial denture. When I saw her about my symptoms the next day she was vague about the cause and said I'd have to let it pass on it's own. During the next few months of check-ups while I waited for the implant appointment I indicated that the area felt inflamed. Each time she did a single X-ray and cursory exam and said everything looked fine. Following the implant placement surgery, I immediately began experiencing periods of severe pain and noticeable oozing from the surgical site. When contacted she didn't seem too concerned. During the next 2 months of healing time I visited her no less than 4 times over concerns about the symptoms. Each time they would take a single basic X-ray and do a quick exam and declare it was fine. Even when I showed her a bubble of pus draining into my mouth she dismissed my concerns saying that the drainage was a normal part of the healing process. (?!?) I reluctantly returned for my final scheduled appointment. In spite of the problems I'd been experiencing I hoped that this was my final visit and everything would turn out alright. Sadly, immediately upon examination she declared " Looks like the implant failed. We're going to have to remove it and start over." She appeared annoyed and ignored my remarks about how I tried to tell her something was wrong. When I returned that afternoon to have it removed and a new bone graft placed, the whole procedure was rushed such that I practically had to beg for laughing gas to keep me calm. Even still, I spent the roughly hour long procedure fighting off a panic attack as it was clear that she was angry about having to work on me again. I couldn't wait to get out of there and based on their parting words of "Give us a call in a couple of months... " ( instead of the usual insistent pre-booking for the next appointment), I knew the feeling was mutual. A few weeks later I saw my regular dentist and showed her the damage I'd been left with. She was kind enough to immediately contact dr Malek's office to get my fees back so I could find another Dr. Unfortunately it wasn't that simple. After 4 additional consultations it was determined by ALL that my front gum line was not restorable and one highly respected Dr posited that because of a naturally occurring bone defect he found on the CBCT scan, I likely never should have had an implant placed there at all. He seemed surprised when I told him that Dr Malek had never bothered to do a thorough CBCT scan or even a panoramic X-ray during my six months of treatment. I intentionally waited until now, 2 years later, to post this review because it's has taken me this long to sort out the tissue damage and bone loss from her negligence, not to mention the additional thousands of dollars I had to invest in restoring my smile. No thanks to her. Two notable take aways from this experience: 1) The impressive affiliations on a Dr's resume do not indicate their talent or their ethics. 2) Trust your instincts. If you have a bad feeling about any provider, find someone else. read more

My gums have been receding for years and I have never had a dentist refer me to a periodontist, so I thought that this was something that was only going to get worse. Fortunately, I decided to check on some options. It's been nearly two weeks since Dr. Malek completed my gum graft. Went in for a weekly post check-up last Friday and everything is healing up nicely! I was initially impressed with the consultation because everyone on Dr. Malek's team, including herself, are extremely friendly, happy and professional. Just the kind of team you can put your trust in. The day of the surgery I was even more impressed in how gentle she was and how she talked me through the procedure. I had a high level of anxiety going in, but they made me at ease. Everything was as pain free as possible, just the way I like it. I am a long time patient of Dr Malek. I have several implants due to gum disease that she has done. I have my teeth cleaned every 3 months at Dr Malek's office. I would never seek another periodontist . Her staff is friendly and exceptionally competent. Minimal wait times, if any. Dr Malek is exceptional at explaining procedures and options.
