The captain has a hyrophone and that's when we heard the whales sing. Towards the end of our tour, I heard the whale sounds with just my ear and without the hydrophone. Snorkeling was fun and accessible because they had prescription masks available, which is a must if you cannot/do not wear contacts and want actually see the ocean life. We had a plenty of time to float and observe the fish. Lunch was delish and they prepared some tasty gluten free noodles JUST for me. On the way back, one of our daughters helped hoist the sail and we were able to catch the wind of a bit. We also had the good fortune of observing a pod of Hawaiian spinner dolphins on the way to and back from Lana'i. Book this trip! It is SO worth it!!!

When you get on board they have a light breakfast with fruit, croissants and muffins that you can snack on, as well as fruit juice. The ride out, they explain some safety stuff and how the day is going to run. There are 2 floors to the boat with the upstairs being much more open. There were only about 30 people the day we went but I believe they have up to 100, so a more crowded day may have a different experience. Despite being in November, we ended up seeing several whales coming to the surface (apparently they are in abundance come January). They provide snorkel gear and fins, but you are more than welcome to bring your own (we borrow fins only as we brought our own masks). They provide a simple anti fog spray which worked great. They let us snorkel for about 2 hours in the surrounding area asking us to stay within 50 yards of the boat with a buddy. The staff answered all our questions about what fish we were seeing and recommendation for how to see the best fish. There is also a glass bottom that you can climb down a ladder in the boat to see the fish without going in the water. They served lunch while docked so you could eat while you took a break from snorkeling. It was fish tacos with a selection of fish, pork or being burger meat. They had a slaw and quinoa side and some chips. Nothing fancy but o found it delicious after working up an appetite snorkeling. They had cameras for rent (extremely expensive so I'd bring your own), a photographer that took picture you could purchase for a fee ($80 for all the pictures she took of us, again a little pricey), wet suit tops for rent ($10 each) and special snorkel masks if you are near sighted (I believe this had no additional charge). The boat was pretty new, clean and open which was nice. I would 100% go out with this company again.

Their location at Kihei Boat Ramp in South Maui means that you have an extra hour in the water so you can make one more stop compared to the other snorkeling charters who leave from further away and you spend most of the time going and coming vs in the water. 2. Their guides are so good, respectful, fun and full of knowledge about the underwater things you'll be seeing. 3. Their raft holds 12 people (I think) so it's much more intimate. This was worth every penny. You'll never forget when you first drop into the warm Maui waters and the incredible underwater sights you'll see. Make sure to book well in advance.

The slide was fun and grandson had a blast. Saw some turtles on the way back as the captain stopped so we could all check out. Only thing I thought probably shouldn't do is charge $10 for a wet suit top. It's not the amount but if they fell they need to charge, raise adult price up $5 bucks to cover since seems would be better to include as part of the total cost. I would highly recommend since we have done snorkel trips on other boats and this is was by far the best.

We booked the snorkeling trip to Molokini Crater and Turtle Town. Upon arrival we were greeted by the staff who were the epitome of service with a smile. The amazing photographer-videographer, Marley worked overtime to capture all of the fun. The whole crew were constantly checking on the guests. The highlight of the trip was the second half when we stopped at Turtle Town, where we got to swim and actually see turtles. Our captain was so friendly, my husband and I had the pleasure with chatting with him. Midway through the trip he came over to us and gave us two of the biggest avocados from his tree to take back to our vacation rental. This snorkeling trip was by far my favorite and my highlight of our Maui vacation. Next time we are in town we are booking another excursion with Calypso Charters. Staff 5+++/5 Experience 5/5

The evening before my tour, I called to confirm everything. During that call, the representative noticed what appeared to be a duplicate reservation and assured me she would cancel the duplicate booking. She also recommended that I contact GetYourGuide to verify I would not be double charged. GetYourGuide confirmed that my reservation had always been for only one person and that I had only been charged once. Despite this, approximately two hours before my scheduled departure, I received a call informing me that my tour was being canceled because there were not enough passengers. I even offered to purchase a second seat so the tour could proceed, but that offer was declined. What is most frustrating is not simply that the tour was canceled, but that this issue could have been communicated much earlier. If the company knew they were unlikely to meet their minimum passenger requirement, there was no reason to wait until two hours before departure. By that point, I had already arranged transportation, incurred cancellation fees on my ride, and lost the opportunity to book another snorkeling excursion during my vacation. Yes, I was refunded, but a refund is the bare minimum when a company cancels a service for reasons entirely within its control. The last-minute cancellation created unnecessary inconvenience and wasted valuable vacation time. If you're booking with Hawaii Nautical, especially as a solo traveler, be aware that your reservation may be canceled at the last minute if they don't have enough passengers. I would have appreciated more transparency and significantly more notice.

Upon arrival we boarded with everyone else and headed to the top deck. The wind was awful so as you might imagine, it was not enjoyable. I wish they would have cancelled. We didn't cruise, we went to a harbor for shelter from the wind and hooked up to a mooring. The wind was so fierce that our group went below to eat where the staff was preparing the food. The food was okay. Not at all worth the price and don't fall for the lobster up charge of $70... it wasn't worth it. The crew was great. The drinks were readily poured, which was appreciated. With that said, the entire group agreed it wasn't worth the money and we wish they would have canceled due to wind.

Our anticipated experience with the crew, based on glowing reviews, took an unexpected turn. Instead of being greeted with the famed Aloha spirit, we encountered a more authoritarian atmosphere. Throughout the excursion, directives were delivered rather sternly, with little room for deviation. For instance, during the demonstration, we were not gently guided but rather commanded, warned that failure to comply could result in restricted equipment options later. The crew's use of the loud speaker to reprimand passengers was unsettling. I distinctly recall an incident where a woman, wearing her snorkel on the right side for comfort, was publicly chastised for not listening to instruction and to switch it to the left. Similarly, a man was scolded for putting on his flippers on in the boat instead of the water. Even the simple act of a woman grabbing bread due to feeling unwell was met with a stern announcement from the captain, WE WILL DO THE SERVING AROUND HERE. Low Aloha Vibes: Despite the absence of any prior offer of refreshment, my request for a drink was denied, being told it was too late and that the bar would reopen after we where were packed up and under way. Even a simple request for juice to accompany my sandwich was met with a dismissive response. The overall ambiance felt more like a school field trip, with passengers being treated like unruly students. The only beacon of positivity was the photographer, who exuded the Aloha spirit and went the extra mile to engage with us in the water, pointing out rays and eels. Regrettably, no crew members ventured into the water with us at Turtle Town, only the lifeguard on the paddle board, leaving us to discover turtles on our own, with many passengers missing out entirely. To compound matters, the boat's anchored position at Turtle Town was less than ideal, necessitating a strenuous swim against the current to reach the prime location. While I managed due to proficiency in swimming and prior experience, others less familiar with the area missed out and required assistance getting back to the boat, with some needing rescue by the lifeguard. In summary, while the excursion had its highlights, the overall experience fell short of expectations due to the crew's authoritarian approach, lackluster service, and inadequate guidance at key points during the trip. read more

We booked the Molokini or Coral Garden snorkel afternoon experience. We have been wanting to do the Molokini snorkel for the past 21 years ever since I moved to Hawaii, so we were extremely disappointed, when the captain said that due to the ocean conditions/weather he opted to rather take us to the Coral Garden snorkeling spot, despite it being so obvious that the ocean and stayed as calm/flat all day, till we got back to the harbor. I am wonder if maybe there is a quota system in place, which the operating company had to pay for. I get the impression that Malolo Tours might have only paid to allow them to take only one boat to Molokini a day. This is just my suspicion, since honestly it was an absolutely gorgeous sunny and out in the ocean day. The hotdogs they provided were also very disappointing and the bar was rarely manned, which limited access to the free drinks included in the tour. The bar tender seemed to have many other duties on the boat. The Coral and fish at Coral Garden was very disappointing too. Coming from the Big Island, I enjoyed much better snorkeling spots access off the shore line with no need for a boat tour. The only highlight of the day was, when we unexpectedly encounter whales after the season is over. What I like least is the fact that it seems as if Malolo promotes the Molokini as a destination for both their scheduled boat excursions on any given day, but it might not be possible or be the case. I took my wife on the whale watching adventure! We took several pictures while on the boat! The captain kept calling out at what time the whales were at so that everyone onboard had a chance to see these beautiful animals. The best part was the interaction with two absolutely AMAZING Crew Members. The first was Jeff, a Navy Veteran. Made sure this trip was completely remember able. He spent time showing us as well as others how to spot the animals as well as made us feel like we were the experience, not the whales. A true American hero Jeff is! Then there was Jill, she is a spunky young lady full of energy. She place the microphone in the water so that we were able to hear the whales underwater. That was such sweet music ti our ears. But most if all, those two made sure that I was able to get on and off this boat safely, after having major back surgery in December. They made us feel like we were the most impotent people on this excursion. For that reason alone is enough to recommend this excursion. It was very well priced and was worth every penny we spent, which wasn't much considering all the other options. But again I say, for my wife and I, if it wasn't for Jeff and his compassion and conversation, I didn't believe we would ever of had that much fun. Thanks Jeff. Zero if it were allowed... RUDE RUDE RUDE RUDE RUDE RUDE crew!!! We went on the Molokini snorkel trip the day before on the Mololo boat. It was the opposite of the Magic Merman trip. The Mololo crew were rude and the boat was old and the food and refreshments were bad. NO way would I recommend the Mololo. We were running slightly behind and the Mololo crew told us that they would leave us and we did not have time to put a parking permit on our dashboard and said that we may be towed... we put on the permit and went on the trip with a very bad feeling about the trip. The snorkeling was great but the crew except for Carlos were rude including the captain. WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY- Book a great trip with the Magic Merman!! They are AWESOME!! Molokini was great snorkeling but the 3 trips that the Magic Merman took us to were better spots. We did not enjoy our trip due to rude staff. read more

The crew was great. Safety came first on ground, boat, and in the water. The energy was great and friendly. My family and I appreciated the snorkeling tour! Also lunch was provided grilled hot dogs with a choice of sprite or coke. Adult drinks $3.00 Margarita's or Mai tai's after snokeling and pay at the end of the trip. Nice surprise when existing the boat, you get a big chocolate chip cookie! It surfaced the kid inside There was also a $20.00 tip per couple, but it was worth it! The crew had a in water photographer on-site to take pictures and video of your family group. Prices $75.00 for all access photos and videos. I highly recommend this team! read more

An amazing time snorkeling! Staff was very fun and helpful and they really seemed to enjoy doing what they do. It was nice having a photographer in the water with you to get great shots. Guide took time to look at whales when we spotted them and gave us some great information when a good time came up to talk about it. Highly recommend this for an amazing experience you will talk about for years with great pics to show it. Was my favorite part of my trip and was able to swim with turtles! read more

Best Whale Watch Boat Tour - I wasn't expecting to see any whales since my boat tour was scheduled in April (usually pretty low activity) however Captain was very familiar in locating some whales and we got to see them and it was AMAZING. I chose this particular tour because it was a smaller group size and I did not want to feel crowded or overwhelmed on a boat with strangers. It was the perfect amount of people, and my husband and I ended up chatting with most of the other passengers, having lots in common. Our captain was Caiden, who was extremely kind, informative, and entertaining. We also had crewmates Sienna, Diego, and Jim looking out for us and making sure that we were comfortable and had all of our wants and needs met. I felt completely safe and comfortable the entire trip and I appreciated having a certified lifeguard on boat with us. The snorkeling experience was phenomenal and being pregnant, it made me feel so calm and relaxed. I appreciated learning the history of the two various locations we snorkeled at and the opportunity to see a sea turtle. The ship itself was pristine, and the restrooms were some of the cleanest I have ever experienced on a boat. The breakfast and lunch that they served us was tasty, and the macadamia nut cookies at the end were the perfect sweet treat. I appreciated that they were able to offer me mocktails since I cannot drink at this time, and those were tasty as well. This experience was worth every penny and I would definitely come back and do it again.

The cost of the trips were worth it because we got four things. 1) Meals, 2) open bar, "ongoing" beverages like passion fruit juice and ginger drink, 3) the boat ride itself and 4) snorkeling, snorkel support and equipment. I was surprised that 130 were on the trip both times yet it did not seem crowded at all. The old school metal slide was extremely popular. I learned on these trips that you can't guess the calmness of the upcoming snorkeling spot. It might be white caps in the middle of the harbor while Coral Garden could be super calm. The staff members were nice, professional and smart. I would go a third time!

Would take this trip over and over again! One concern which is with the affiliated photographer. She made no effort to connect with my family nor did she take any pictures which was extremely disappointing. I'm assuming she decided that we were not worth her time. If I find her yelp, I will leave a poor score and I hope the crew choose someone else whom doesn't exclude people for whatever reason she chose.

Have not edited my videos yet but the number of whale sightings was insane. We saw multiple breaches and tail splashes as we followed a mama, baby and escort (from an appropriate distance for many, many minutes. Both Bailey and Phil were incredibly knowledgable about sailing, whale watching, the island and life in general. Our close friends booked this cruise and invited us and we look forward to our next outing.

Hands down. 10/10 If you are trying to decide between going on a large power catamaran or book Kainani - I will save you time, stress and mental energy. Book Kainani now. It is worth it. I'm the trip planner in our family (read cover-to-cover Maui Revealed and several other guide books on the island). Sailing - it was a relaxing day with nice wind and calm waters. Snorkeling - We saw so many fish (trumpet, convict, ember parrotfish, humuhumunukunukuapu'a) and even honu (sea turtle). It was a special day that I'll always remember. Captain - Ely = smooth and steady. Clear directions and focus on safety protocols. We felt safe the entire afternoon on board .. especially for one member who first time on a sail boat and snorkeling in open ocean water. Crew - Phil = perfect personality for a relaxing day on the water. Snorkeling guide extra ordinaire. Catering - We really enjoyed the poke tuna bowls, macadamia nut cookies, fruit on board. Water and beverages as well. What I didn't expect but enjoyed - We thoroughly enjoyed the journey to and from the sailboat. It felt special - in contrast, a power catamaran was down the shore with 75+ people boarding. Will I book again? Absolutely. (For those reading this far, unrelated Maui travel trip tip: the Hawaiian muffin at Maui Bread Company in Kihei and the pies from Leoda's in olowalu are worth the stop as well!)

With the help of our expert instructor and pro diver, that changed within minutes. He guided them with patience and confidence, and they ended up enjoying every moment. They are already asking when we can go back out into the ocean. We saw a wide range of sea life, including colorful fish, beautiful corals, and a few turtles. We also learned about the history of Hawaii, fun facts about the area, and how to identify different species while we snorkeled. The underwater scavenger hunt was a creative touch that kept the kids excited throughout the tour. Our instructor was professional, knowledgeable, and even captured photos and videos of us underwater, which was a great bonus. Water and healthy snacks were provided after the tour, which we appreciated. If you have small children or if it is your first time snorkeling, I highly recommend this company. If you want a special moment out in the ocean, this is an excellent choice. I have joined other snorkeling groups before, but this was by far the best experience I have had.

After making a reservation, It turned out that that was not true. Not a family friendly company! We are yet to come across a company that cannot accommodate after making a false promise. Review of Kayak Olowalu - January 8, 2025 I typically don't…read morewrite reviews, but after my recent experience with Kayak Olowalu, I felt it necessary to share my concerns. I've been a loyal customer since 2012 and have always had positive experiences, but this particular tour was deeply troubling. When I visit Maui and book kayak snorkling excursions, I only book it with this company. Willy's Disrespectful Behavior: The tour began smoothly, but things quickly went awry when my husband started feeling motion sickness. He informed Willy that he wasn't feeling well and decided to return to shore. Willy asked if he was going to tow us back, referring to me and my daughter. My husband said "no..they can stay". After my husband left, Willy began mocking him with exaggerated voices, laughing at his discomfort with one of the guests. This made both my daughter and me feel very uncomfortable. Willy's Unusual Behavior: As the other guests moved on to the next snorkeling location, Willy became increasingly erratic. He threw his anchor into his kayak with unnecessary force and started letting out this loud, uncontrollable, exaggerated laugh. My daughter and I were left alone with Willy, and his behavior started to feel unsafe. Willy took my daughter's paddle away and started towing us without any request from me, and shortly after we started paddling toward the new snorkeling location, he unexpectedly turned the entire group around. He then complained that he had to turn the group around because of the extra effort of towing us. I told him it wasn't necessary to tow us, we can manage ourselves. I noticed we were heading back to the meet-up spot on shore and asked if he was taking us back. He confirmed that he was. At that point, it was clear that he no longer wanted us on his tour, and frankly, we felt unsafe, so I was okay with ending the tour early. Despite my repeated requests to paddle back on our own, Willy insisted on towing us, exaggerating his grunting noises as if the effort was overwhelming. I told him he didn't have to leave the other people and we can find our way back and I pointed at the building on shore to make sure that's where I should go. He claimed it would be impossible for me to paddle both of us back alone and blamed my daughter repeatedly, saying, "WE ARE IN A SITUATION...WE ARE IN A SITUATION!... BECAUSE OF YOUR DAUGHTER. SHE LOST HER PADDLE!" I explained that my daughter hadn't lost her paddle--he had taken it from her--and assured him that we could manage on our own if he simply returned it. Nevertheless, Willy continued towing us, making disturbing noises the entire way back. As we paddled back, I asked for his name. He turned around, smirked, and rudely responded with, "I don't recall," then ignored me when I asked again. His behavior was bizarre, unprofessional, and deeply unsettling. Willy's Lack of Care for Other Guests: When we returned to shore, I asked Willy for his name again in front of my husband, and he reluctantly provided it. I had to ask him 4 times before he told me! I asked why he had treated us so poorly and ended our tour early and he sarcastically said twice, "You should be out there with your man!" It was clear that my husband's early departure had upset him, and he was taking his frustration out on us. Willy was in such a hurry to leave that he quickly unlocked the shed for us to retrieve our belongings and told us to lock it up while walking away. And he left the keys to the shed with us! We locked it and left the key in the lock. He seemed more concerned with getting away from us than ensuring the safety of the remaining guests. From a distance, I saw that he had left the other three guests stranded in the middle of the sea. Voicing Concerns and Seeking Resolution: Recognizing the need to address the situation, I approached a staff member about filing a formal complaint. Tiara, a staff member in a golf cart, overheard and immediately approached with genuine concern. She quickly contacted Kayak Supervisor Tim, who came out to speak with me directly. Despite my frustration, both Tiara and Tim listened attentively and with respect. Tiara went above and beyond to resolve the issue, offering a refund as a fair solution. She explained that it was only right to refund customers who didn't receive the service they had paid for. Her professionalism, thoughtful response, and commitment to customer satisfaction were deeply appreciated. Tiara assured me that the situation would be taken seriously and addressed accordingly. Conclusion: My experience was disappointing and infuriating due to Willy's behavior, which was so absurd it felt like a scene from a movie. I've never been treated like this, and it was frustrating beyond words. I urge the company to take this seriously, as allowing bad behavior to continue will harm their reputation. I've seen another negative review specifically naming Willy, and I hope the company addresses it before it leads to further damage.
